@a name That's the opposite of solid character and plot development. Everything comes out of nowhere and goes away instantly. Zeppeli saing "You're like a son to me" to JoJo makes no sense, Erina and JoJo's relationship makes no sense, every new move that JoJo pulls out of his ass makes no sense. Phantom Blood is a mess.
Actually Giovanni is a male italian name, Giovanna, instead, is a female name... Watching part 5 as an italian is so fun, i love how the bad guys are all named after some kind of food. Araki loves to play with the italian, for examples "Dio" in italian means "God"
That last bit about Jonathan clutching Dio and stopping the violence with acceptance is exactly why Jonathan just barely misses the status of forgettable and if not leapfrogs him into unforgettable legend status. The tragic happy never after he gets is why we never want to see our badass protagonists like Joseph/Jotaro/Josuke lose. It’s a great remedy for the plot armor shonen protagonists are draped with. You just need to justify it. Cheers to you Jonathan!
Ya. Jonathan could have been better characterized throughout his journey to match Dio's but his end was stellar. You get a glimpse of it when he defeats Dio for the second time and he sheds some tears for his brother but it's handled so-so. Going back the Dio's third defeat, when I watched anime I genuinely thought that Dio showing respect for Jonathan was part of his another scheme so reading manga and seeing that he didn't have any mocking internal monologue really made me love their dynamic.
It is so great feeling to DISCOVER deeper themes like this (the ending was so bittersweet). For example, how Araki uses juxtaposition (Jonathan&Dio, Hamon&the mask). I am even making content regarding part 1 in my channel (giving tools to people, so they can DISCOVER deeper layers by themselves). Also test your JoJo fan level ua-cam.com/video/t54G4GeDKtg/v-deo.html
@@crios8307 Phantom Blood is MUCH better in retrospective, because future parts build on it (including tragedy of Dio). Rewatching you notice so many things (ua-cam.com/play/PLAJoeCH-JzLRrQeY_Hx-QW3qDrRLY24eP.html).
I think the JOJO's fanbase is honestly the nicest I've had the pleasure viewing such as not crucifieing people for pointing out flaws In JOJO's where the worst thing about this fanbase is terrible meams
Throughout this ENTIRE VIDEO you didn't mention Robert E O Speedwagon even ONCE, how can you explain a series without talking about the main character? 0/10
7:08 You can also see when Dio chooses not to go for the fork that he does pick up the money and grasp it tightly in his hand, which was his main goal in the exchange. He prioritizes not losing what he's gained over his emotions in the moment, which again goes to show how calculating he is.
"It's when you start to look at it as a small part of a larger whole does it become something truly special" You perfectly described this part for me. I was introduced to Jojo by a friend, but i was almost disappointed with Phantom Blood. It was good, but i've heard so many times how great Jojo was, and i felt like i was missing something. It wasn't as fun as i thought or as original. It was over the top in some points, but it ended there. Thank God i kept watching the series. Now i can respect this part more, since it's the one who started it all, but it can put newcomers of the series down.
Kiuraz It feels like I'm reading my own comment. That's exactly what happened to me. I found Phantom Blood dead boring and struggled through it cause my friend kept telling me how good it was. I cannot express how glad I am that I did.
Same happened to me. I finished Phantom Blood and was just like that's it they're just moving on to a new group of characters? But it's so much more. I've falling in love with it.
I was first introduced to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure from WRYYY, although I didn’t know it at first. The reference that really got me watching was the ‘To Be Continued’ meme. (As a purveyor of memes) I thought to myself, “Hmm, I wonder why this is so popular?” Then I found the source, JJBA. I then thought, “Ooo, I like Anime. I guess I’ll watch this.” Then... The jojokes started.
Well the reason he could was because that stuff was his vampire powers. I'm part 3 jonathon's body fights off dio's vampire's essence, the eye lazers still could be use but when you can just stop time and rip someone throat why even give someone a sliver of a chance with something that can be dodged
"These characters are now perfectly positioned to crash into each other" I think this phrase is the very short summary of what all of JoJo is about: It's not just about great character, it's also how they clash and affect each other, bringing out the best and worst of those around them, and showing just how determined, creative and different humans can be under different circumstances in a very poetic way. As Araki himself said, JoJo is a glorification of humanity.
I think he'll eventually get quite a following if he keeps making these amazing quality videos. The journey to a million plus subscribers always begins with the first.
When I was watching arc 2 of phantom blood, I actually found it really enjoyable because of its unique and crazy moments. I did not find it boring. Part skippers are missing on some amazing moments.
My favorite description of Jojo and itss story is 'it goes from a brotherly rivalry to fighting immortal vampires to fighting with magical ghosts and it feels natural and you don't question it until you sit down to think about it.' and I think that's a big tell to how well the writing is with story development.
People saying they're trying to get into a series make me laugh. It's simple, just watch the show/read the book/play the game. If you like it you like it if you don't you don't. Good luck :)
Kind of silly to call phantom blood “standard” when it’s actually the blueprint for all shounen manga/anime nowadays. It seems standard but that was groundbreaking back in the 1980s. Without PB there would be no dragon ball. Normally I would agree and say being too standard is boring but in this case you have to excuse it because this is literally the progenitor.
@Rated R I think the point is that this wouldn’t have been standard when it was made. We only see it as standard because a lot of stuff since has followed its example.
Jojo's early artwork and style has led to me believing that they are the founders of the bro force, and so I will refer to them only as the Brostars. Bronathan Brostar. Broseph Brostar. Brotaro Kubro. Brosuke Higashikata. Giornbro Gibrovanna. Brolyne Cubroh. Bronny Brostar. Brosuke 2.Bro
Anybody got the heart to tell him Dio wasn't reaching for the fork he was grabbing the money, and the point of that wasn't to show how willing Dio is to go for violence, but more how Dio will suffer and go through hell to get his prize
Ironical how JoJo has seemingly inspired all the other shonen manga to some degree and has its 'DNA in them', and yet it feels the most 'bizarre' out of them when you first pick it up
JoJo is so great. I am even making content regarding part 1 in my channel (giving tools to people, so they can DISCOVER deeper layers by themselves). Also test your JoJo fan level ua-cam.com/video/t54G4GeDKtg/v-deo.html
Which leads me to wonder if david productions, on the eve of making an anime adaptation of the manga, could have abridged that arc in someway without taking too much away from the core plot
I mean they kinda did. Part 1 was adapted into 9 episodes which is INSANE pacing for an anime. It was like averaging 6-7 chapters an episode while the average is generally 2-3 and in cases like One Piece 1 chapter an ep.
I once heard that there are two kinds of people: "I suffered, so others shouldn't have to" and "I suffered, so why shouldn't they?". That's basically the biggest difference between Jonathan and Dio.
thats why i love the SBRverse, its basically reworking what Araki wished he'd do better, he had 20 years of experience after starting to work on SBR, he had a lot of power over what he can do with his work, and he had a month to figure out what to do with each chapter, it was his magnum opus, it was a way for him to truly bring out the potential of his earlier work, he succeeded
No mention of how this is basically Dracula, and how the character archetypes basically come from that/that time? I mean, I think that's why it's also pretty interesting, because of how Classic it feels.
I think it borrowed heavily from Dracula and (possibly) Dickens. If there was no mask and no Hamon, I think Phantom Blood would have played out remarkably like a Dickens story. It has the themes of class divide, exaggerated characters meant more as representatives of a social ill or good than human beings, and growth from childhood to adulthood.
Tbh, that last scene also gave you a glimpse of how much Dio actually respected Johnathan, because you can hear in his voice that he's actually shocked and sad that Johnathan died. Fucking best scene from all of part 1 imo
This is one of the few times that correcting pronunciation is actually relevant, since no one, who does not already know the authors name has a chance of parsing what the hell it is.
I think it's crazy how the first three episodes went from an anime adaption of a Charles Dickens book, to a full-fledged anime battle series. It started out so suspenseful, and the voice acting, soundtrack, and cultural references captured the atmosphere of the general time period so well.
Whenever Jonathan and Dio are together, Phantom Blood is great. They have a really good dynamic going on. But, whenever they are not i'm bored. I'm not having a lot of fun. However, that instantly changed with Battle Tendency, I have fun with it every moment and was my favorite part until I got Vento Aureo.
PREACH!!! Amazing video, Phantom Blood is my least favourite part of JoJo, but I still respect it immensely for all the reasons mentioned in the video. Just for the record though, it's ''Araki'' not ''Ariaki'' ;)
Man I’m glad I watched this today. My recovery sometimes feels like it could end in a bad way. When you become serious about UA-cam, you take a SEVERE hit to intelligence. Becoming a UA-camr means you sacrifice intelligence. It's a shame but it's sadly true.
Actually when Dio reaches for the fork, he isn't reaching for the fork at all, he is reaching for the coins and grabs them showing that he was willing to go through an ordeal to meet his end goal. Or one could take it as him reaching for the fork and deciding that the coins are more important than getting revenge on some random asshole.
I wanna say thank you, not only for encouraging people to watch part 1 of JJBA, but staring why it’s misunderstood, important and so on. I’m currently working on a comic dub project that’s based around a fan written comic story in Phantom Blood, and it’s centered around the idea if “Jonathan was stabbed by the mask”, basically a love letter to the original phantom blood. I’ll say this though, phantom blood is my favorite part and always will be, and it’s a shame people don’t see it the way I do. Hopefully you’ll make more content around part 1 sometime, because you obviously know what makes part 1 a good story.
Just wanna come here and say that you made me start watching JoJo and I just started Stardust crusaders and I'm loving it so far, HUGE thanks and subscribed for the great videos! keep em coming!

Damn you! Your recommendations have been spot on! I never could be bothered with this series or HxH and I watched your videos really as background to clean my room to and to get them out of my recommendations. JoJo's and HxH are now in my all time favorite shounen. I've been an Ippo fan forever, but boxing and manga/anime is a combination that was sure to win me. Then you made a Bleach video articulating my thoughts and observations like I thought nobody in the world could get... I feel like I almost _need_ your list of completed anime... or your top 10.
I think my favorite thing about the relationship between Jonathan and Dio is Dio's reaction to Jonathan actually dying; he's shocked. Like a part of him thought Jonathan COULDN'T die, and he expected them to keep this battle going forever, a la Batman and the Joker. Really thought it added an extra bit of flavor to their relationship, with Jonathan being the only human Dio would ever even come close to admiring.
Upopular opinion: i actually liked every jojo and enjoyed their respective parts, and can see why they are all unique and interesting in their own right.
In case you were wondering, number 1 manga according to that poll is Slam Dunk EDIT: _minor spoiler_ Great lengths to explain Dio's motivation? they spend 3 minutes on him before he kicks a fucking dog
Remember those times when the only thing DIO wanted was the families money?

DIO in Eyes of Heaven: FUCK ALL Y'ALL

Watching part 5 as an italian is so fun, i love how the bad guys are all named after some kind of food.
Araki loves to play with the italian, for examples "Dio" in italian means "God"
The ultimate stand Pokémon master
Daniele Mastronardi AND DIO is also a musician araki adored
No matter how many times I hear “OVERDRIVVVEEUUUHHHH” I’ll never get tired of it
This show catches my attention, I'm not a big fan of anime but I think this could be a different experience...
Edit: Holy shit, that intro is sick!
To be fair Jonathan only got 9 episodes, and he was still having children a century after Dio cut his head.
7:08 You can also see when Dio chooses not to go for the fork that he does pick up the money and grasp it tightly in his hand, which was his main goal in the exchange. He prioritizes not losing what he's gained over his emotions in the moment, which again goes to show how calculating he is.
"It's when you start to look at it as a small part of a larger whole does it become something truly special"
You perfectly described this part for me.

Well the reason he could was because that stuff was his vampire powers. The right choice.

Kind of silly to call phantom blood “standard” when it’s actually the blueprint for all shounen manga/anime nowadays. It seems standard but that was groundbreaking back in the 1980s. Without PB there would be no dragon ball. Normally I would agree and say being too standard is boring but in this case you have to excuse it because this is literally the progenitor.
no you don't have to "excuse" it, it is standard, regardless of what it accomplished
@Rated R
I think the point is that this wouldn’t have been standard when it was made. We only see it as standard because a lot of stuff since has followed its example.
Interesting to think the story that laid the groundwork down for other series to become cliched was adapted so much later
i thought dragon ball was older
Part 1 was, like many other series at the time, a knockoff of Fist of the North Star. Dragon Ball is more of a blueprint of modern series

Phantom Blood's 2nd arc made me drop the show and I forced myself to go back and finish it later. So glad I did.
Same, dropped it for months in Arc 2 and absolutely frothed at the mouth over Battle Tendency.
+Sonsquatch There is an hour and a half long recap, but it actually barely cuts things from the already pretty short run.
Currently watching right now, thinking of skipping the second arc. IT IS SO SLOW IN THIS PART!!

Anyway, great analysis, I love your Chanel.
the main character is even called jonathan for fucks sake
It's Fist of The North Star plus Dracula.

One of the reasons I also love this show is the amount of Glam rock and Heavy Metal references.
Actually when Dio reaches for the fork, he isn't reaching for the fork at all, he is reaching for the coins and grabs them showing that he was willing to go through an ordeal to meet his end goal.
