One has been amazing with these work. One Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100 are both some of the best anime I have ever seen. How can one man make two series that are this good? Hopefully, he never runs out of inspiration.
his 2nd series is ok, but since he wrote Makai no Ossan essentially to practice writing and visual story-telling, the quality is very inconsistent and shifts pretty often from chapter to chapter. Of course the fruits of that labor was Mob Psycho 100 and the Hero Hunter and beyond arcs of One Punch Man, so it's definitely time well spent.
seriously shame on people who cant appreciate the perfectionism of mobs animation. Best animation ive seen maybe ever, the media switching feels so right
I really love how The Body Improvement Club really cares about Mob. When when he's falling behind and failing his own expectations they're ready to keep him going since they know he's doing his best and wants to be better.
That's so subversive. Whenever I think of athletes, I'm prone to thinking of either one lone idiot or a group of tough-as-nails men ready to assert themselves.
They all have gang hairdos but they are the warmest, most welcoming characters in the series. Mob asks if he can join, they talk about how tough it is and if he thinks he can keep up, looking like they're about to chew him out, but then just... Take him in. Treat him like he'd always been there. Even standing up for him when he gets bullied, which is almost unheard of in Japanese schools. They really are great guys.
Im shocked that people could call the animation in this bad or cheap, watching this as an animation student was such a whirlwind experience, i found myself yelling "THIS ANIMATION IS SO GOOD" at so many moments in this anime.
I love this kind of animation in shows which have a partial focus on comedy. Plus if it helps in faster animation of a second season, I will be even more pleased.
Yeah especially in some scenes like in the final episode when Reigen tells Mob it’s okay to run away and it shows a scene of a bridge between mob and reigen that’s broken with beautifully animated glass/oil animation that’s breathtaking and the ED which is also glass animation that’s so well done and the colourful shots in some scenes and the dynamic camera movement and the intense music especially in the fight scenes where it will make you feel rushed or hyper and makes you wanna watch the whole series, along with the storytelling and The Comedy. Art Style/Animation:10/10 Story:9/10 Characters:8.5/10 Overall:10/10 (Also the dramatic moments with the perfect syncing of emotional or sad music and it’s so effective)
ONE is an unbelievably talented writer, but what made his work even more amazing was his lack of aesthetic artistic skill. I don’t think Mob Psycho 100 would have gone so well if ONE was able to draw incredibly aesthetically.
Kasvini Muniandy Mob Psycho 100 is my favorite anime by far. It has the best and most real moments I’ve ever felt such as “I’ve always known” and When Mob stays with The Claw boss at the end
You should watch it because of the Body Improvement Club. This is one of the few anime that promotes lifting. How many anime out there talk about bodybuilding? No, none of that fight training shonen stuff. I'm talking about pumping iron in the church of iron for the sake of gains. Mad fucking respect for this anime. The Body Improvement Club is hands down one of the best clubs in all of anime.
I love their resolve to improve themselves and the fact that they accept Mob despite him being weak, precisely because they understand he wants to improve himself and they see the potential in him. I also love how Mob goes through with the intense training to the point of collapsing, and they are concerned about his well being.
Good thing is that it gives people a perspective that almost everybody who lifts is very compassionate, which in Mobs case is one of the most realistic renditions. Everybody who lifts wants to help others to achieve those goals.
My favorite part of Mob's training scenes is that each and every time you get a shot of that river scene, Mob always manages to make it a few feet farther than last time before collapsing. It's a really moving but subtle way of showing that Mob is in fact getting gains.
Very true! I get the sense that a lot of people have gotten used to the expression of art having a competitive side due to how the industry has evolved over time. If we really think about it, would there have been any competition or critique among cavepeople making their historic wall art, or would have ancient storytellers telling spoken stories been in a similar position? There may have been (because of how human intelligence naturally comes with analyzing things, even if we don't realize it) or there may not have been (depending on who the consumers of the art were like). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@Scarshadow666 anything can be a competition even if you don't know . I'm talented at art and people used me as a benchmark for skill , always trying to do better than me . But I'm just trying to draw my favorite stuff , and challenge myself . Also the best manga to me one piece has a quirky art style and the writer is just doing what he loves a passion project and everyone that loves it is because of that . I'm sure shows like Naruto and dbz lost it because of their competitive nature . Basically I'm saying your truly appreciated when you do what you love not when you try and be better than everyone else
I like that this video describes what makes Reigen special as being his charisma... but to dissect that a little further, "charisma" in Reigen's sense is understanding people. Reigen can't read minds... he, is not psychic. but he pretends to be. so he has to really pay attention to people in order to figure out what he needs to do for them. you'll notice throughout season 1 that Reigen doesn't leave his clients unhappy. he does use a legitimate set of skills to provide legitimate solutions to legitimate problems. the only con going on here is in regards to his methods. and I'll take this one step further and say that Reigen's special skill is caring about people. Reigen is an advocate for empathy. it's his tool of the trade... the thing that allows him to conduct his business the way he does. and you'd think that just understanding a person and giving them what they want wouldn't require him to care, but he's not actually scamming people. he's not offering a service and then stealing people's money by not providing that service. and when Mob wanders into his office the first time, Reigen cares enough to give him some real solid advice, not for money or anything, but because Mob seems to need it. when he's up against the members of Claw, he speaks to them as people first, not just enemies. he inspires all of the Claw underlings so much in the short time it takes him to locate Mob, that these people don't even care when he's revealed to be not actually their boss. and what Reigen actually says to the members of Claw in that climactic scene speaks to this too. the idea that psychic powers make you better than everyone else only works if you use your psychic powers to make others feel lesser than you. everyone wants to be special, but it's inherently selfish to think that you have the right to stifle that desire in another person just to elevate yourself. squashing everyone around you is a cop out. it completely avoids the difficulties of understanding and caring about who a person is. when Mob learned that Ritsu had psychic powers, they could've fought. Mob could've crushed Ritsu, and then there would be no confusion as to who was the most powerful psychic. but that also would've made Ritsu's envy and fear of Mob's abilities totally valid, and even necessary. Ritsu might go back to living in fear and never trust Mob again if Mob defeated him. but instead, Mob tries to reconcile things. he tries to reassure Ritsu, and to reaffirm their brotherly connection. he tries to convey love for his brother because it's worth it to him to do so. negating Ritsu's fears is actually much more difficult than affirming them... Mob could make Ritsu fear him easily. but it's worth it to Mob to do things the hard way. because Mob's brotherly relationship with Ritsu is worth the work. Mob cares about him. and in return, Ritsu cares about Mob. this is what makes Mob special, not only to Ritsu, but to the viewers of this show. overpowering someone is easy. caring about them is difficult. you won't always know how to care for someone in a way that does any good, and sometimes caring requires you to consider and work for another person's best interest. but caring is also what puts two people on the same team in life. it's what forges the connections that make you strong at heart. when Mob was about to go 100% murderous intent, his connection to Reigen kept him from potentially killing people. Reigen is actually the only one to "defeat" Mob's 100% and he did it by caring enough to understand Mob's emotions and say something that would resonate and deescalate his rising turmoil. Reigen was the only one who was able to figure out how to do that. he could only do that by caring about others. and Mob's gratitude manifested stronger than any power we ever saw him produce by himself before. it was given over to Reigen not only as a sign of trust and respect, but because Mob would literally rather hand over his power to someone else than risk hurting anyone, given the choice. Mob has the power to subjugate people... on any normal day, overpowering a normal person like Reigen would be the easiest thing in the world for Mob, but why on earth would Mob ever do that? the emotional relief of having someone there to help him is much more valuable to Mob than the power he would have if he let his emotions run rampant. empathy is Reigen's ultimate move, and it's the most powerful one there is.
Hey I just want to let you know this legitimately made me cry. It might partially be due to finals stress but man....I just love Mob Psycho so fucking much. I love Mob, I love Reigen, I LOVE this message of kindness and understanding and empathy the show conveys. That you aren't inherently more important than someone else because of your abilities, that it's ok and even crucial to rely on others, that self improvement is the epitome of personal strength. This was absolutely beautifully written, thank you for sharing.
The art in Mob Psycho 100 is beautiful. The simple style gives it real personality. the irregular at magic high school looks unexpressive and bland in comparison. Even in character design.
Irregular was boring not just unexpressive and bland. It had a tournament arc that did nothing for any of the characters and was far too drawn out. I hear people praise its magic system but I wasn't impressed, throwing a bunch of jargon at me while muttering incomprehensible exposition is not a power system.
First day he shows up and they act like he was always there. Treat him as an equal member, let him weigh in his opinion on their decisions, stand up for him against bullies when Japanese school clubs usually have a pretty strict heirarchy and introduction period. They're all just bros wanting to get buff, and they want to help their littlest bro catch up as quickly as possible.
And if you think Season 1 of Mob Psyco was good, just hold on until they get their hands on the future manga material. Holy fuck it's gonna be breathtaking.
One of my most favorite things about Mob Psycho 100 (other than the animation and Mob himself) is that even though Mob's default expression is so stoic, I've *never* had a moment where I've had trouble understanding what emotion(s) he's feeling. Not once have I watched a scene w/ Mob in it and was unable understand him.
Probably an unpopular opinion, but I like Mob the most in MP 100's cast. Reigen is cool and has some hilarious moments, but something about Mob kinda touches me more, his innocence, his will to grow, very charming character.
not unpopular at all. mob is my boy too. he's incredibly compassionate and forgiving -- and somehow manages not to hold grudges against people who have hurt him. we can all learn from him.
Especially compared to the still taken from SAO which features background models of two people literally just standing in the street because they needed to balance the composition and didn't want to change the shot. 14:44
@@zendariun101 I disagree, while they may not guarantee something to be an above all winner they prove that whatever gained the award was well received. Animation is a lot more than art style and this show showed that in it's abstract and beautiful pieces.
@@ooololl i mean, I was basing myself in the game awards because they judge things with mass appeal insteady of good or nah, but i dunno if anime awards are different
As someone who has been watching anime for a while and a huge fan of 90s anime, I will say that I applaud animators that have the guts to venture out of the typical anime style.
I personally think there are 3 anime eras. 80's and all the way to 2004 where animators were drawing everything with an open mind (Golden Boy, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost In the Shell, etc). Old animations may look dated and ugly in still shots, but usually they have stunning animation when push comes to shove. Just like in Mob. 2004-2014 - where animation just looks like ass. Everything was made as a copypaste with very little animation freedom, as if all companies making anime suddenly decided to save money. Still images, same visual styles and so on and so forth. Basically most of shows from that era looks CHEAP. (with some exceptions ofc) 2014-modern - where animation goes back to the roots. Way more original art styles that are not just the ones being taught in schools. More freedom and artistic expression. Sure there are still some pretty stale looking and copy-pasty stuff. But because the Anime media grew so much, more and more money are being invested into it. And let's be real here. More money means more effort. If you are being paid 100 usd to draw a 30 second scene you would make it still image with an opening mouth. Who wants to work hundreds of hours for something that won't even cover the living expenses for the time you are working (in other words actually wasting money when you work)? But if you are being paid 100 000 for that same 30 second scene you can REALLY put effort into it, your life is covered and you can dedicate yourself to the fun of creating. (I speak as an artist myself)
I feel like the "artstyle" issue is an issue that has been present very strongly and for way to long in gaming as well. People assume that anything that is realistic is good and mature while anything cartoony/stylized is automatically either childish, artsy or shovelware. A perfect example of that would be The Legend of Zelda : The Wind Waker, which received major flak for its artstyle (meanwhile it has some of the best and most mature character motivations and one of the most brutal finishing blows of the entire series)
I agree, but most anime is not actually realistic anyway. It just has more line detail in a single frame. Characters still look like plastic or porcelain with jagged hair, massive eyes and tiny mouths. Terrifying aliens IRL. It's not a bad style, but it's very unoriginal at this point.
I agree so much with you on zelda. Ho my god this powerful and deep ganondorf, and the ending. Twillight princess is supposed to be more mature, but it felt like an angsty teenager game to me. I go for majora's mask if I want a really dark and mature zelda.
Replying to an old post woo! This is the perfect example I would put alongside the new "Lion king" and its trailer. It's realistic, and impressive... but the shots have lost any style from the original. In order to make it look more realistic it's lost its soul.
Mob Psycho 100 is like everything you could want from an anime in one delicious package: -Amazing and unique animation -A simple, yet unique take on typical shounen action anime -Great comedy -Great themes that relate to our everyday lives -Intense fights -Emotional moments -Great character development -Great pacing Seriously, if this gets season 2 and beyond, and then concludes, this is definitely gonna be one of my all-time favorite anime.
+LiGht YaGami I agree, but I don't think the emotions necessarily need to be perfectly balanced, like the anime you had mentioned. I think I had dropped Death Note (will pick it up again), because I always felt like I had to feel tense every second, mostly due to the dark aesthetics, but it was literally tiring.
I think it will, there are some really amazing parts later on that blew me away when I read them. I never knew broccoli could be so emotionally impactful.
Another thing I've realized from watching Mob is that the artstyle makes the people look more realistic in the way that people can actually look ugly. Most anime don't have characters that look like ass. No one in Academia, or even Jojo"s ( up to part 3 no clue on the rest) have one single character to memory that are butt ugly like characters are in Mob.The first minute of the first episode is an example. The couple is god awful looking, while Reigen looks kinda decent looking. Though I may be new to the anime community, I still think that after seeing like 10 different shows it's kind of refreshing (?) to get a realistic take on people in a world. Granted the friends that got me into anime won't watch it cause it looks bad, but I guess I'll thank you and Mother's Basement for getting me into this amazingly dumb and emotional show. Sorry for whoever reads this and doesn't understand what I mean and for typing so much. It's something I've thought about this show for a while, and figured maybe it'd add to what Eyepatch is talking about for aesthetics.
It is also nice to show how Mob perceives world,.. those girls whit vegetable like head whit his overshined beloved one in middle. whats best, they make that scene work,...
i know this is a year old, but i was thinking exactly the same thing! i think a lot of shows, whether they realize it or not, at least partially rely on their characters being “pretty”, aesthetically pleasing. it’s a breath of fresh air to see a show like this not care about that at all
I think season 2 surpasses season 1 imo. Some of the character moments in season 2 are so damn poignant. Specially Episode 7 of season 2, where the episode sort of completes Reigen's character arc in such a beautiful and heartfelt way, it made tear up. No anime has done that to me in years! I came for the animation, but stayed for the characters.
The scene where Reigen realizes that Mob knows/knew he didn't have psychic powers and Mob coyly answers his question leaving it still ambiguous was amazing. It so beautifully underlined how Mob had learned from his master.
@Kefka Palazzo which is still amazing, honestly, because the fear is always that a superb first season could lose steam as it goes on. Mp100 just keeps outdoing itself.
Season 2 episode 8 is genuinely one of my top 5 episodes period. If you've watched, you'll know what I'm talking about. Sadly the next episode kinda ruins it all. I don't know if I've ever hated anything quite like I do S2E9
I realize this comment is a year late, but I disagree with your opinion on the Hanazawa arc. I guess the plot beats follow typical Shonen tropes, but only on paper when listed out dispassionately. The character choices that move the plot forward seem very original to me, the reluctance of Hanazawa to actually kill Shigeo, past events that make Shigeo reluctant to use his powers, and the sense of loss the audience feels when he actually goes Super Saiyan... I felt really bad when that happened. This also had a pay-off in the penultimate/last episode, where I was very happy when Reigen interrupted Shigeo's progress to 100% because that would again mean that Shigeo lost his humanity for a bit.
I hadn't really thought that much in depth about Mob going ???%, but yeah, you're absolutely right. Usually one would feel hyped/relieved when characters power up, and, to an extent, I do in response to Mob's explosions as well, but, at the same time, there's a level of despair and sympathy to be felt whenever it happens. Because, in reality, those powerups are actual meltdowns of an emotionally repressed but ultimately very kind kid. And that's really sad.
So glad to see somebody said this!! I think people mistake Mob Psycho for parody when what it's really doing is deconstruction. It's a sincere story that takes a critical eye to the tropes of its genre, in a comedic and emotional way. The Hanazawa Arc is a great example of that. But it's easy for it to FEEL like parody at times, especially in the first season. It does poke fun at tropes! But I think anyone who's expecting a true-gold parody, like One Punch Man, is going to be missing out on half the fun.
Yeah! Honestly I was really surprised EyepatchWolf would say something like that after his praise for hunter x hunter’s most emotional arc (which I 100% agree with, by the way). This scene from mp100 struck me as VERY similar to gon’s quote unquote level-up in the chimera ant arc. And no one in their right mind would call THAT typical shonen!
Good Lord, when you put Mob Psycho side to side with "Irregular at Magic School" it's so brutal. "Irregular" looks much more "candied out", but also looks dead inside.
yeah, I feel that showing the stills side-by-side at first and then transitioning into the actual animated scene does an amazing job of showing the difference in "quality"
While the overall animation and art quality of Irregular may be lower, it has its own flavor that I find enjoyable. It's concept/take on magic is interesting and the calm and humble main character is refreshing.
The fact that the plot twist of Mob knowing Reigen is a fraud from the get go is heart warming, their relationship is beautiful, they're holding to each other to comfort each others weakness.
I always loved how the show looked so muted and detail lacking. It not only makes things look more real, but it shows things through mobs eyes. How he sees everything with his emotions locked away, only for them to eventually spill out into an over the top spectacle represented by colour, light, and other more abstract means. Even though things look plain and lacking in detail (compared to other shows) it's far more dynamic, which makes for a more visually interesting show in the long run.
Alex Castro Demolition D, Goatjesus, Sudo sef, myjapaneseanimes, bestguyever, kenji the engi, the anime hero, animeeveryday, professorOtaku, and sometimes Digibro and bobsamurai
dave smith well shit, seems like you got them all... but no! The only guy I can think of is UnderTheScope, but you've got that base covered a few times over with all those people.
I'd say Joseph Joestar is another character who flies by the seat of his pants and wins through charisma and asspull in a world where he seems to be consistently outclassed by his rivals and enemies.
Dante Crottogini I suppose he is already pretty good with Hamon, but at the beginning when he hasn't met Lisa Lisa yet and he's still an amateur, he's just a complete chump who pulls all sorts of bullshit to win (even after he's got better Hamon he still pulls all sorts of crap lol)
Dante Crottogini That makes sense against normal human beings and even vampires as we saw in his fight against Straits, but the only enemies that mattered in Battle Tendency were the pillarmen. Gods who essentially outclassed him in every sense of the word. He has to fly by the seat of his pants and take every single miniscule opportunity to have a chance against these guys. Look at his fight against Wham to see what I mean.
To this day Mob Psycho 100 has had the most emotionally breaking scene of anything I've watched. After his fight with Teruki he broke down, and the narrator began describing how mob had become a mess inside from all of the pent up emotions he had held in for so long with no outlet for them and that really hit home for me. It's a struggle to not tear up watching that scene no matter how many times I've seen it.
Well, I watched the first few mins. Watched the anime, then read the manga, then came across it again. And I must say, Mob Psycho 100 is as amazing as he said it was. Anime-Onlyers better be prepared.
This show reminded me anime was about having fun. The thrills, the jokes and gags. This was an anime revolving around the characters. I forgot it was not about how many anime shows I mass consumed, but about going on an adventure with characters you love and relate with. Mob psycho 100 reminded me of why I fell in love with anime. The mc is so real and raw, with actual emotional struggles despite being so powerful. Reigen is such a complex character who says some of the most philosophical shit I’ve ever heard and he’s the most righteous fraud period. I can’t explain but this show is beautiful. Thank you ONE. The animation is also what gives it that gritty, fun edge.
@@candy-drops3578 I think u mean OPM lol. I meant manga OPM is better than manga MP100. I haven’t finished Mob yet, I’m still watching S2 of MP100. I’ve read both manga and OPM definitely shits on MP100. In terms of anime, it’s a tie for me tbh. OPM S1 is better than MP100 S1. I’m halfway done with S2 of MP100 and it’s definitely better than OPM S2.
@@pray4angel that's pretty shitty take. If you want to make an actual comparison...compare the OPM webcomic drawn by ONE to MP100 (also drawn by ONE). Murata just adapted it. Whereas MP100 doesn't have a professional artist that adapted it ( it doesn't need it either, that's its charm) ONE is a storyteller not a professional artist. Whereas Murata is a professional artist who was inspired by ONEs storytelling. You're pitting the actual maker of OPM and MOB against a flashy redraw. If it wasn't for ONE the Murata redraw wouldn't even exist 🤦
In season one, I realised I loved how there were different art styles in different situations. Like if he was thinking of something, when he reaches 100%, etc. season 2 had less of it but it was something that I loved and noticed!
Not only did I always give credit to the detail and fluidity of animation, but to the art style, as well. I adore it when a show looks out of the norm, since the norm, is generic. Already seen. Boring. Not to say it can't be well animated, but, chances are, I'd be bored after the first 5 minutes, since I know I've already seen it, pretty much.
I'll gladly take a unique but flawed looking anime over one that embodies all the familiarity of the anime look without trying anything good with it *coughs* SAO, *coughs*
+Stuff Unlike many members of the anime community, I'm fine with familiar art styles, because let's just face it, even the most "unique" anime draw inspiration from something made at some point, or conveniently match something else made at some point. Fate/Stay Night UBW is as anime as it gets, but it takes something familiar and does it in such an amazing way, that it creates its own identity by using the roots of another. SAO, on the other hand, when you look at it...it just looks anime. Doesn't really look very pleasing, or try anything of its own.
Reigan slapping Mob at 5:41 or so... In most shounen shows, that would be the guy slapping sense in the main character, so he can man up, stop holding back, and kill all the bad dudes without remorse. In this series, it is not.
"Your life is your own okay, sometimes you have to run away, you live, to see, another, day, make noooo miistaaake" Lyrics from the English dub cover of the opening of Mob by NateWantsToBattle
mob psycho by far is the greatest anime of this season (not counting jojos bizzare adventure) of course things like yuri on ice or keijo get more popular (obviously not for the plot) but mob is definitely the most well written series and it's a shame it didn't get the love one punch man did (even though it is better then one punch man)
Yuri on Ice is pretty well written and directed, honestly. There's lots of detailed characterization. It's not comparable to Mob since its a slice of life/sports show, but it's quite good for its genre.
a real underrated sports anime is ping pong it has a very strange style that is very unlike any other anime even more different then mob and it's really psychological
@@TheCacophonyOfHumanity the original poster changed the comment but at first it was just listing the things that were great in mob psycho so my reply doesnt make sense anymore
There are seriously so many good characters in this show, Body improvement club is basically giga chads, Tsubome seems to be a Beach but is secretly molding Mob to be a great strong willed person, Hanasawa and Ritsu's change of hearts, Serisawa is hella relatable, many many more.
Omg i love this guy, literally calling out on people who dont appreciate sudden styles of Animation, damn it i hate when that happens but thanks so much for doing so, also giving a in depth explaination of line counts and still motion, its really neat!
Thankyou So much for this, I initially dropped mob after the first 2 episodes, and OHH BOY was I wrong to do so. Also your videos for me are more like 'Why you enjoyed ...' since you explain a series best attributes so well.
I strongly disagree on the synopsis on the Hanazawa and the Claw Arc Mob's transformation in the Hanezawa fight is opposite to the typical power up and transformations in anime where the hero gets super strong it usually becomes a triumph and a new form the hero will use against stronger foes. In shounen the mad emotional hero gets stronger and defeats the enemy. However Mob's transformation truly takes a toll on him emotionally and physically even by beating the enemy it's not a victory but a tragedy to Mob. He's a saiyan doesn't want to go super and on the claw arc where you expect the same thing to happen it totally twists it over keeping the message of the show. Mob is still a great subversion to Shounen troupes.
you do a beautiful job explaining things. All other people who try to do this kind of commentary end up saying "Omg its beautiful!! look at the art look at the music!" but you do so much more, you go in-depth and really sell the show. :)
4:59 - 5:21 is sooo true. One of the only shounen protagonists I know who's as delicate and sensitive as Shigeo is Son Gohan (more specifically kid Gohan during the Android Saga), who also happens to be my favorite Dragon Ball character for that very reason. There are tons of similarities between the two characters (so much that it wouldn't surprise me if ONE took inspiration from Gohan for his main character, since he likes Dragon Ball), the main one probably being that they're both incredibly kind-hearted and pacifist almost to a fault. It's precisely because they're such good kids that the emotional outbursts they experience when being forced to fight against their very nature and principles are so impactful. When I first read the manga and saw the Hostility/Animosity explosion for the first time, I remember being almost immediately reminded of Gohan's first transformation into a SSJ2. I would add a little something though: I don't think classifying Mob as a parody is a very good idea. It does poke fun at many of the old (and newer) trends within shounen manga, but it's more of ONE's gimmick (subverting expectations is like a second nature for this dude) than it is the point of the show/manga: it is, at heart, a classic SoL/action/comedy shounen (with a supernatural twist) through and through.
Your Junji Ito and Berserk videos were the ones that made me subscribe, and seeing you do what is possibly my favorite manga that's come out in recent years, well it just put a big smile on my face.
goddamn. Every time I've watched one of your videos, I have an urge to stop being lazy and get better drawing. You perfectly conveyed every point i have about this show from its characters, animation and editing to how deciding on not to watch it just based on its style is sad and makes you miss one of the best shows this year. I've tried explaining to other friends why they should give Mob Psycho 100 a try and they blow it off, telling me they'd watch it if it looked "well drawn" and had better art. So yeah, thanks for another spectacular video. Can't wait for the next one
10:01 I’m glad you brought this up! EarthBound is the reason I started watching Mob Psycho. I figured since enjoyed a game about a psychic boy so much, I’d give an anime about a psychic boy a chance too. I definitely feel like Mob Psycho’s humor is similar to EarthBound’s. I love both of these series a lot!
agreed. teru choking mob out after picking a fight with him, then being forced to deal with the repercussions? i wish we could see more bullies get absolutely schooled like this. this was fresh AF. also notable: teru isn't doing much damage to him, despite all the pummeling he takes. i love (inasmuch as one can love such a fucked up thing) the scene where teru slams mob through several concrete classroom walls and the most he says is 'Ow.' mob knows how much damage he can do to others and isn't fighting back for this reason.
Your point on Mob Psycho 100 visuals: YASSS!!! This really needs to be emphasized. The dynamics of the MP100 and the richness of scenes are so far beyond the 'board drawings' of many animes out there. The seeming simplicity of any one frame really unties the hands of animators and allow free reign when it comes to scene progression & creative approach to what's normally considered secondary elements. The resulting sheer intensity is well, well worth it.
Its insane how the 2nd season is even better than it already was. This show really is life changing and made me consider my and other's feelings in an approach that I have not seen before. I owe so much to this show at how I am today and to the people around me. One of my favorites for sure, even after rewatching multiple times, I still gain insight from this show.
It's a serialized manga. He would put a lot of effort into it if he's paid. One Punch Man on the other hand is just his pet project. If you ask me, both should be funded by the US.
Jephthah San Pedro that makes sense. and yes, I hope Digi's dreams come true, where anime will be funded Patreon style. MADHOUSE: here is High School of the Dead 2 or a reboot for some show, if we can raise X amount and if X amount of people would like a second season ( I guess they'd run a campaign where people would vote for either one), then WE'LL DO IT. that's where we need to be by at lease 2020.
I love the animation! It’s so fluid and just aesthetically pleasing to me. I get chills whenever Reigen moves to be honest because it’s so expressive and smooth. The exaggerated impacts and movements is gorgeous. The psychedelic effects and colors are also perfect
I'm so happy I found someone who's really an anime fan like me. Really taken an appreciation for the visual artwork of MOB instead of just liking "good looking" anime. Nice videos man, keep it up
Just gonna slide in that its hard for a manga artist to improve when pumping out pages every week. There's not a lot of time to improve sketches and composition. It has a deadline. Naruto is a good example of this as it didn't change much over its 15~ year run but in some of the chapter title art where kishimoto had more time you can see him do some impressive drawings, such as the more realistic portraits of naruto and sasuke towards the end. That One is improving as much as he is with Mob Psycho is very endearing to me. He's putting in as much work as he can for a dude working 3 web comics and a remake of one punch man. It's worthy of appreciating.
The art style put me off in the beginning as well but after seeing news and HYPE about season two and the endless praise the show is getting, I'm like "eh... I watched Rick and Morty, why not try this anime out." And GOD FREAKING DAMN I AM SO HAPPY I DID. I have NEVER seen an anime with this much sakuga in every single episode, I found my mouth hung open in other shock every time and my eyebrows fixed to its highest regions on my head. Like holy fuck. Nothing about this show is cheap, and sure, the character designs look plain but it mirrors the themes well enough and the animation sells the show the best. This is an ANIME, I came to see animation, not slides and blinking. If an anime doesn't present to me what I can't do (I'm not an animator) in After Effects, it's boring as hell.
Naruto: *"Chakra"* One Piece: *"Devil Fruit abilities"* FMA: *"Alchemy"* HxH: *"Nen"* JoJo: *"Stand"* Literally any anime: *"Powers, with it's respective name as given in the show"* Super Eyepatch Wolf: *"Magic"*
Can we also point out how much fun the animators must have had? How much they LOVE the story and characters and how much they respect ONE? Like, this whole show is like a giant love letter to the manga and author
Also holy shit, that quote from your art teacher really hit me. You videos are full of insights that hit so close to home. Drawing with balls not only descibes my own attempts at art from my artist phase long ago, but also explains why I love Taiyo Matsumoto so much.
This summaries all of my thought abt mob psycho perfectly. I genuinely love this anime and there’s so much nostalgia to it. Cant wait for season 3 hehe- anywyas keep up the great work
I love how much you appreciate ONE's art. Studio Bones got it and so did you! People often compliment his storytelling but don't highlight how well he draws emotion, it's always interesting and amusing!
When I was getting into anime, I saw Mob Psycho 100 and immediately fell in love. I loved the visuals and story and it ended up being my first manga I even read and bought, it also stays as one of my favorite anime/manga ever
Tbh I only watched Mob because there's not a lot of anime available in Netflix at that time and I really wanted to watch one that day. So I started to watch Mob BLINDLY, as in I have no idea on what it is about just that it was made by the maker of OPM which I really love, and OH BOY, I finished it in one sitting. At first, the animation took me by surprise and thought about myself how ugly it is but then the exorcism started and I was blown away by how beautiful it truly is.
Anyone who has some remote knowledge about 2d Animation knows that Mob is phenomenal from an artistic and animator viewpoint. The insane amount of drawing techniques etc to the point where it sometimes looks as if it was roughly drawn with a pen only to animate it so smoothly as it is is truly inspiring.
Man, if only I had at least an eighth of this guy's critical thinking and understanding... that aside- what a glorious breakdown... makes me appreciate the show so much more! Thank you for all your efforts, Super Eyepatch Wolf! also: Direction > Art Style
To me, one of the main things which makes Reigen stand out is how he knows who he is and how to be a good person. He teaches Mob to not be a bad person and he himself keeps Mob from exploding in a couple of situations. Plus, he's hilarious lmao
While the art style was kinda weird for me at the start, what made me keep going was that it has some kinda retro vibes. Like old school anime, the colors are not highly saturated (like most anime nowdays), and the designs of the characters are more simple. And seeing that style in a modern anime made it stand out for me from all modern anime.
In most anime, characters tend to stand still and talk.
In mob psycho, if reigen stops moving for 5 seconds he will literally die.
That's why he sweats so much :O he just doesn't stop moving for one second
F
I agree with that statement
Is he a shark?
Even if he's standing still, he's very subtly vibrating.
The show in a nutshell:
Mob: I don't wanna exorcise, I wanna exercise.
oh my god lol
Good one😂
that's so creative
A hahahaha this made my day XD

The Body Improvement Club is the real hero of this show. They're so wholesome and kind.
They're awesome
They make me laugh every time, so self-disciplined and stern, yet so kindhearted at the same time. "Violence is for losers!!!"
Always there to have mob's back 😤
I thought they will be bullying Mob, for real xD
They're the best
ONE is the hero we desperately need but don't deserve.
Of course the fruits of that labor was Mob Psycho 100 and the Hero Hunter and beyond arcs of One Punch Man, so it's definitely time well spent.
it's sad that everyone fails to be better
Classix But that we have anyway
Did you just steal that line from Pellek?

The scenes where the Telepathy club marches through the hallways looking for recruits
Hngg
People can't tell the difference between "animation" and "art style". The last part is what they don't like. Those FOOLS.
Art Style/Animation:10/10
Story:9/10
Characters:8.5/10
Overall:10/10
(Also the dramatic moments with the perfect syncing of emotional or sad music and it’s so effective)
Kinda like with Kill La Kill. Whenever I see someone dissing the animation I eyeroll so hard
ONE is an unbelievably talented writer, but what made his work even more amazing was his lack of aesthetic artistic skill. I don’t think Mob Psycho 100 would have gone so well if ONE was able to draw incredibly aesthetically.

"Body Improvement Club"- When 1 best boy isn't enough.
***** ^THIS^
It's one of the few times I've seen in media where the "jocks" are all just really good guys. And that was nice to see.
My favorite part of Mob's training scenes is that each and every time you get a shot of that river scene, Mob always manages to make it a few feet farther than last time before collapsing. It's a really moving but subtle way of showing that Mob is in fact getting gains.
Art isnt a competition , it is a form expression . Mob style of art captures this well. The true masterpiece of it is how well the writing is
@Bacon Spice Water I got news for you about the ethnicity of Mob’s writer
I kneo this is 3 years ago but yeah i think the art matches the show like i wouldnt mind if it was like very very good art but yeah
Art is an explosion
The way you put it is so beautiful, I'm crying in my heart...
How long did you take to write this
Hey I just want to let you know this legitimately made me cry. It might partially be due to finals stress but man....I just love Mob Psycho so fucking much. I love Mob, I love Reigen, I LOVE this message of kindness and understanding and empathy the show conveys.

My favourite part of the show is how the body improvements club just straight up adopted Shigeo

I like it 🤷🏾♂️
not unpopular at all. mob is my boy too. he's incredibly compassionate and forgiving -- and somehow manages not to hold grudges against people who have hurt him. we can all learn from him.
The Casuals: "This anime's animation is so bad".
Crunchyroll: "Animation Award for 2020".
Especially compared to the still taken from SAO which features background models of two people literally just standing in the street because they needed to balance the composition and didn't want to change the shot. 14:44
Awards are irrelevant

(with some exceptions ofc)
2014-modern - where animation goes back to the roots.
People assume that anything that is realistic is good and mature
while anything cartoony/stylized is automatically either childish, artsy or shovelware.
A perfect example of that would be The Legend of Zelda : The Wind Waker, which received major flak for its artstyle (meanwhile it has some of the best and most mature character motivations and one of the most brutal finishing blows of the entire series)
Have fun with that.
tf2 does it extremely well i mean its such an old game and i still think it is pleasing to look at
I agree, but most anime is not actually realistic anyway.
Mob Psycho 100 is like everything you could want from an anime in one delicious package:
-Amazing and unique animation
-A simple, yet unique take on typical shounen action anime
-Great comedy
-Great themes that relate to our everyday lives
-Intense fights
-Emotional moments
-Great character development
-Great pacing

LiGht YaGami frf
+LiGht YaGami I agree, but I don't think the emotions necessarily need to be perfectly balanced, like the anime you had mentioned.
I think I had dropped Death Note (will pick it up again), because I always felt like I had to feel tense every second, mostly due to the dark aesthetics, but it was literally tiring.
I think it will, there are some really amazing parts later on that blew me away when I read them.
I never knew broccoli could be so emotionally impactful.
How could people say this series looks bad. Its amazing.
They look at the art style and assume the animation quality must be similarly basic. Yet any scene with Reigen will immediately debunk that claim.
It is also nice to show how Mob perceives world,.. those girls whit vegetable like head whit his overshined beloved one in middle. whats best, they make that scene work,...
i know this is a year old, but i was thinking exactly the same thing! i think a lot of shows, whether they realize it or not, at least partially rely on their characters being “pretty”, aesthetically pleasing. it’s a breath of fresh air to see a show like this not care about that at all
I completely disagree with JoJo. There are literally tons of guys and girls in JoJo that are ugly, especially in Part 3
"up to part 3 no clue on the rest" i have some absolutely wonderful news about part 6,, some of em look busted as shit lmao

I don't really see it as "Season 2 surpassing season 1" I more just see it as the ongoing narrative simply getting better as it goes along.
@Kefka Palazzo which is still amazing, honestly, because the fear is always that a superb first season could lose steam as it goes on. Mp100 just keeps outdoing itself.
@@lynxaway Exactly! It's just such a damn great series man.
Agreed
I totally agree, and it was the moment that really sold me on this anime
Good Lord, when you put Mob Psycho side to side with "Irregular at Magic School" it's so brutal. "Irregular" looks much more "candied out", but also looks dead inside.
yeah, I feel that showing the stills side-by-side at first and then transitioning into the actual animated scene does an amazing job of showing the difference in "quality"
Agreed. That was a hugely effective display.
I enjoyed both shows though
demilung Comparatively, it just looks so stiff
While the overall animation and art quality of Irregular may be lower, it has its own flavor that I find enjoyable. It's concept/take on magic is interesting and the calm and humble main character is refreshing.

Super Eyepatch Wolf hey. If you don't mind me asking what anime is at 13:50 the one with the girl and boy are fighting
Kinda late and I could be wrong but I believe that's katanagatari

I'd say Joseph Joestar is another character who flies by the seat of his pants and wins through charisma and asspull in a world where he seems to be consistently outclassed by his rivals and enemies.
NIIIIIIIICE
That was my favorite thing about Battle Tendency and is why Battle Tendency is my favorite part.
he's still a very skilled hamon user. Buggy form One Piece fts that group better imo

Does anyone else only watch the video after finishing the anime?
great video Mr.eyepatch
Ed Keosada Depends
Ed Keosada I watched half of the video, went to watch the anime, and came back right now.
I got about 4 minutes in and decided to check it out since it’s short and a few days later here I am finishing it.
Well, I watched the first few mins. Watched the anime, then read the manga, then came across it again. And I must say, Mob Psycho 100 is as amazing as he said it was. Anime-Onlyers better be prepared.
Episode 5 of Season 2 was great.
The animation is also what gives it that gritty, fun edge.
yeah, no. OPM shits on MP100
@@pray4angel lmao that's a huge cope mp100 is miles better than OMP in nearly every aspect
@@pray4angel I think you're only saying that because of the artstyle 💀
Mob's artstyle is beautiful in its own way.
@@pray4angel that's pretty shitty take.
If you want to make an actual comparison...compare the OPM webcomic drawn by ONE to MP100 (also drawn by ONE).
Murata just adapted it.
Whereas MP100 doesn't have a professional artist that adapted it ( it doesn't need it either, that's its charm)
ONE is a storyteller not a professional artist.
Stuff Well, it's mainstream for a reason. Cuz it's popular.
Doesn't have to be good, just popular
"Your life is your own okay, sometimes you have to run away, you live, to see, another, day, make noooo miistaaake"
Lyrics from the English dub cover of the opening of Mob by NateWantsToBattle
AŁMIGHTY KUSH the opposite
Final episode just dropped out... it truly is a complete masterpiece
No part of it seems flawed, it's just perfect !
mob psycho by far is the greatest anime of this season (not counting jojos bizzare adventure) of course things like yuri on ice or keijo get more popular (obviously not for the plot) but mob is definitely the most well written series and it's a shame it didn't get the love one punch man did (even though it is better then one punch man)
Yuri on Ice is pretty well written and directed, honestly. There's lots of detailed characterization. It's not comparable to Mob since its a slice of life/sports show, but it's quite good for its genre.
Nidhi Manju it feels like another yaoi sports anime like free! which I can't stand
a real underrated sports anime is ping pong it has a very strange style that is very unlike any other anime even more different then mob and it's really psychological
sam anime i mean, Yuri on Ice is no ping pong, but it's definitely better than free. I personally hated free, but found Yuri to be pretty decent.
I can definitely tell it's better then free! but I still don't have any faith on the idea of it turning out good
Mob Psycho made me appreciate animation so much more than I thought I could

Agreed. Ghah, it's such a refreshing read and show!
666melodeath666 may I add the anime is not a parody? Seriously, it's a serious drama with a big amount of comedy.
666melodeath666 Agreed
melodeth, as hard as i found it to read that, i agree.
I completely agree
The mixed media in this show was unbelievable, the finger paint on glass shots were so well done.
you do a beautiful job explaining things.
Mob is truly unique. He's shown as an emotionless character most of the time, yet, he's more human than your typical anime mc.
I love both of these series a lot!
i dont think the teruki fight scene was cliche cuz normally the hero would be fighting back
agreed. teru choking mob out after picking a fight with him, then being forced to deal with the repercussions? i wish we could see more bullies get absolutely schooled like this. this was fresh AF.
also notable: teru isn't doing much damage to him, despite all the pummeling he takes. i love (inasmuch as one can love such a fucked up thing) the scene where teru slams mob through several concrete classroom walls and the most he says is 'Ow.' mob knows how much damage he can do to others and isn't fighting back for this reason.
One of my favorites for sure, even after rewatching multiple times, I still gain insight from this show.
holy shit, One's art got good.
Mob looks way better than OPM ever did
It's a serialized manga.
Who the fuck wants a season 2 of Highschool of the Dead?
It was shameless softcore hentai with a retarded story.
I agree. OPM looks good, but its style feels way too familiar. Mob's style is much more unique and experimental, thus more appealing. At least for me.
+Kieran Owens I had serious issues with it, but I still thought it was decent enough.
I love the animation! It’s so fluid and just aesthetically pleasing to me. I get chills whenever Reigen moves to be honest because it’s so expressive and smooth. The exaggerated impacts and movements is gorgeous. The psychedelic effects and colors are also perfect
I could talk about this anime for hours. unlike majority of shonen as well mob has such a good support system around him. this is truly peak anime.
I'm so happy I found someone who's really an anime fan like me. Really taken an appreciation for the visual artwork of MOB instead of just liking "good looking" anime. Nice videos man, keep it up
His drawings are getting better.
Yeah they totally are.
That is the appeal of the mp100 manga for me. Seeing ONE growing as an artist while Mob is growing as a character.
SantaFire ` he is only working 2 now he finished the one with the old guy
Getting better, perhaps, but reading the manga is still a better experience, with OPM in particular.
Same. I was turned off by looks and thought it looked bad. But I was wrong as I began watching it and I loved it.

Anyone who has some remote knowledge about 2d Animation knows that Mob is phenomenal from an artistic and animator viewpoint. The insane amount of drawing techniques etc to the point where it sometimes looks as if it was roughly drawn with a pen only to animate it so smoothly as it is is truly inspiring.

also: Direction > Art Style
To me, one of the main things which makes Reigen stand out is how he knows who he is and how to be a good person. He teaches Mob to not be a bad person and he himself keeps Mob from exploding in a couple of situations. Plus, he's hilarious lmao
While the art style was kinda weird for me at the start, what made me keep going was that it has some kinda retro vibes.
Like old school anime, the colors are not highly saturated (like most anime nowdays), and the designs of the characters are more simple. And seeing that style in a modern anime made it stand out for me from all modern anime.
The improvement in ONE’s art makes me so proud to be a fan!!
Even comparing Mob to OPM it's such a jump in ability. But he's gotten even better working on the spinoff. It's hard not to be proud!
