  • How do you strengthen your legs when you can't stand or really move your leg? We get this question all the time - so let's answer it!
    In this week's video, we'll be guiding you through a steadypace® assisted leg extension - a great exercise to help you strengthen your quads. The best thing about this exercise is that you do not need to be able to control your legs in order to perform it.
    Grab a chair, a towel, or band, turn your fans up, get some cold water and let's strengthen those legs!

    I have severe muscle atrophy and overly sensitive nerves meaning small wrong movements can leave me feeling uncomfortable for a bit, so I was wondering if it is considered ok that the exercise will leave me feeling minor pain / uncomfortable for a day or two as long as it subsides and I am ready to complete the exercise again three to four days later. I have been bedridden for about 9 months trying to overcome the initial phase of recovery.

    I wonder if these work for someone who was bed and wheelchair bound for 11 months and can not stand or walk for more than 2-3 mins before my legs begin to quiver and I’m terrified I’m going to fall. I had a kidney infection that leached out into my hip flexor. I developed a grapefruit size abscess on the hip flexor and was hospitalized for emergency surgery to drain the abscess. I had to stay on IV antibiotics for 48 days! Two days after I was through with the IV antibiotics, and Was allowed to be out of bed for 10 minutes at a time, I went outside, tripped and broke my tibial plateau. It was not displaced so I didn’t have to have surgery but on the healing end it’s worse. I was not able to bear any weight for four months. Then only 30% of the weight for two months, then 60%, etc. I walked with one crutch for a while but still to use a cane if I’m gonna walk more than 50 or 60 feet. I bought some leg weights and some resistance bands. I’ve been doing things that feel like they’re working on myleg muscles that work, my inner thighs, my hamstrings and my calves, but I know so little about how to rebuild the muscles in my legs.

    How long should you keep your leg in this position? How many days to repeat this exercise?

      Only about a minute. Jeff suggests that one should do 2-3 sets twice or thrice in a week

    How exactly is this gonna work with people that can’t stand or move their legs like paraplegics. They have muscle atrophy. The title of the video is misleading…

    Following 7 months of high dose steroids during cancer treatment, my muscles throughout atrophied and I struggle to climb steps or even step on and off a curb or stand up from a chair . I can’t get off the floor but fall frequently. Not sure how to reverse that when I have zero confidence to walk and no muscle strength.

    If I fully exhaust my quad how will I be able to function (go to the restroom, get a drink from the fridge, etc) for the next 24hrs? If i only partially exhaust my quad it hurts like heck for 24hrs and is even less stable than normal. I've fallen many times due to my right knee buckling and i can't afford to have additional falls because my quad is exhausted and can't help compensate for my bad knee.

    • @MSWorkouts
      @MSWorkouts  2 роки тому

      Good question! Full-exhaustion is momentary and will go away once you rest and recover. Try to plan your strength training days around times you do not have to perform tasks or errands. This way you can allow the muscle to fully recover without it affecting your daily life.
      Remember that strength training only needs to be performed 1-3 times per week in order to be effective. Even one session per week will prompt muscle gains!
