Congrats on your planning and changes in life! Ramsey Rocks, we did that 8 years ago, and it is much easier when you have the money to drive it, the snowball rolls fast We also finished a basement on our home and sold it for profit, in a good market, while starting our project. We also sold our home Jan 2020 as Covid started and moved into our 2/3rd finished debt free project house. I only wish we were in "this place" in our lives as young as you guys are, very impressive. Never Stop Learning!
Amen Brother! and thank you! love your story you guys killed it! ^_^ never too late to get your finances in order and free yourself from the shackles everyone just willingly puts on these days in exchange for stuff right now.
Yes there was a lot of ladder climbing. Was one of the biggest time sinks of the project for sure! I hope you get to make your own some day to! It’s been one of the hardest and most rewarding projects I’ve ever tackled.
trying to get my husband on board with this!! He has been in the construction industry for over 30 years!! He already built himself a shop almost like your building that we could even live in until our barndominium is ready!! It has a full kitchen, bathroom, and washer and dryer all hooked up!! I want to sell our 5 bedroom home now that our children are growing up and starting to get out on their own! He just wont go for it!! says materials are just too expensive right now...but I do not think they will be going down either...and if we can get more for our house we might as well while the market is hot... so my question is did you work full time while you were building this!! You have done an incredible job so far!!
hey Karen! that's really cool! Love to hear about people doing what we are doing. It's hard to say I think you both have valid opinions. the market for materials right now and availability of labor is really challenging, though like you say you can also get top dollar to sell your home right now. Either way you go it's definitely a gamble. Between inflation and unsustainable housing prices its really hard to tell where things go from here. So I actually quit my 12 year long career to do this build. It's likely that I'll need to go back at least for a little while after. Here is a video we did about our debt free journey and how we were able to pay cash for our build. ua-cam.com/video/YoAnoQ9W3JY/v-deo.html
Wow that is really kind of you to say! so glad that we are helping somebody out there. If there is anything you guys have questions on or want to see more detail on let us know. keep us updated on your journey we love hearing about what our community is up to ^_^
Beautiful Home! We are planning to do a build it yourself kit as well. A little nervous but excited to see the outcome. Thanks for posting, it definitely gave us inspiration!!!
I am so glad that we could help inspire you guys along the way. It's been kinda stressful for sure and I feel like my life is pretty maxed out a lot but man is it rewarding. Take your time and read the instructions thoroughly and you guys will do great! keep us updated on your build we really love seeing what people are up to :)
Thank you CJ that is really kind of you to say! it looks a lot more impressive when you compress it all down into 15 minutes rather than seeing me huffing and puffing around by myself lol
This is so cool! Not only are you taking care of your family now, but for generations to come too. Think about it, now your grandkids will be able to star in their own Happy Gilmore movie if they ever need to save the house that their grandpa built with his bare hands.
that's the plan. I had to go back to work because it was taking too long and materials were becoming too expensive. Right now were in the middle of finding funding to hire the rest of it out. Lots of fun DIY projects to come after that though.
residential is 1440 sqft and "shop is the same though were putting a couple rooms on the unheated shop side like a utility room, entry way, and office.
i dont know if any parts are only for wind. we didn't do hurricane clips if that's what you're asking. The building was engineered to withstand all my counties requirements for wind and snow loads though.
exactly! i created some wooden brackets with an iron rod between them that suspended a chain hoist right over the cut out. you can find the episode we first tried it out here ua-cam.com/video/UwnFHNoSsLc/v-deo.html :)
It's a bit hard to tell; did you set your trusses into notches on the posts? Also did your kit come with building plans or was this off the cuff/figured out as you went along? Lastly (for now)...how many trusses do you have? Is your truss span across 40' or 72'?
Hi! yes they are all notched into the posts if you take a look at the time code sections each section has episode # from our barndo build series if you want to see visuals. the kit did come with plans and we just posted a full kit review if you are interested in that. We have 12 trusses total 10 of which are nailed together as pairs so 6 bays total. The truss span is 40' ^_^ hope that helps!
@@HartandHome Thank you, it does help alot. I'm about to build a two storey 40x50 barndo, garage/shop below and living quarters upstairs. I have a couple of truss quotes, one provides six trusses and two gables. The second quote provides twenty four trusses and two gables. It's about a $2,000 difference. I'm just like you, I've never built a pole barn, or anything else for that matter. I'm trying to keep it as simple as I can but getting stuck in analysis paralysis.
@@SunfireWoods yeah i cant say I know what to do here. If your not 100% dead sure id pay a professional to make sure your family is sleeping safe and sound when the structure is inevitably tested.
yes, the instructions were pretty good and anything that I had additional questions on they replied to my emails pretty quickly. I do wish they had more pictures of what a successful instillation of some elements looked like though. additionally some of their techniques are more targeted for posts in the ground rather than in wet set brackets but it wasnt too hard for me to adapt or figure out a way that worked better for me.
as i said in many other barn videos... congrats... but please get gutters... your poles in the concrete will thank you 10 years later.. trust me so many people skip gutters but that will kill a barn, itll cause rot, attract termites, and undermine the barn slowely
@@HartandHome youre lucky if you dont have termits.. my barn on my 14 acre property is roughly 50 years old. ITS ABOUT A 80X50 barn. 6 stalls in left.. center has tripple double doors i can fit roughly 6 cars inside. And right is single double door workshop with 4 inch slab for working on cars etc. Have 120-240 power and water thats piped directly from my house to the barn.. So i get pure Ro filtered water which i installed after my well in the basement. Its nice. Got lucky this barn was here. But being 50 years old it has issues. Most of the issues stem from being board and batton barn. And the boards were put too low to the dirt.. so moisture and termites. And the poles.. while above ground or ground level on concrete... when the gutters failed on the barn 15 years ago.. according to the previous owners. It caused termite and severe rot.. to where about 8 of the 6x6 poles are only holding on by 1 inch.. so they need replaced. This coulda veen avoided if the hill billy prior owners simoly replaced the gutters. Gutters for 80ft are like 70$ lol 140 front and back... stupid people man... lack of gutters also caused Severe erosion. My 4 inch workshop slab is undermined about 5 feet in on the back.. I had to pack dirt and concrete slurry under it to keep it from getting worse. Thankfully the slab is fine. And in the rest of the back of the barn i have litteral 1 foot deep holes all over.. i can crawl under the walls to get outside. Thats all from erosion from no gutters. Thankfully thats just dirt so easy fix. Also have a defunct dog kennle. About 60 foot long by 25 wide. And its got oddly a 5 inch slab. And its undermine 50% of the slab and has dropped 2 inchs and cracked (thankfully good cracks) so it has to be raised.. filled back in. And you guessed it.. all because of no gutters
most of our windows are 4x4, one in the master and one in the back wall is 4x6, the one in front of the kitchen sink is 3x6, and the one vertical one we have is 5x3

I love the clav beat thrown in at the end of the first song. that was so unnecessary but added so much to the progression

yeah hopefully that does the trick
Coming along great!

How did you lift the sets of trusses like that? It went so fast I couldn't see. Was it chain hoists?

Which part of your house do you want to be grey? Yes.
I dont think any part. We like all white right now.
