With their online presence being so robust I'm surprised this is the only independent build video I can find using one of their kits (with modifications). I'm toying with the idea of using Hansen but I definitely have reservations. This video helped define some of those reservations! I'm in WA state too. I know of one other company (local - in E. WA) that sells kits or does the whole build. I gotta check into them.
Thanks for putting this video together. Will definitely take your suggestions on additional trims into account when ordering my kit. Seeing your build is really helping my confidence levels going into the same process. Am completely designing mine in CAD first (including interior and mechanicals). Have already done one design review video, and am now working towards a final one (simplified layout) in the next week.
You're welcome! I've messaged Hansen about some of my thoughts so hopefully in the not so distant future we will have some opinions on my suggestions from some pros. Way to use your strengths to plan our your build! I did something similar but in a game engine just because that's what I'm familiar with. you could probably even export that to unity and walk around in it in vr if you have a headset.
Absolutely happy to be able to point people to you guys after the experience I had. Excited to hopefully have more of a conversation with you guys about some of the thoughts I had so I can understand a little more about why you chose the methods you did. as a newbie builder I have a lot of blind spots and my opinion is only worth so much.
How did yall do the permitting? Did yall list it as a stick build? Also are yall doing a slab after the building is up? If so how are yall doing it 1 slab pour, several different phases?
Hi Tonya! Great questions! for my county they told me you can build it out of gum and toothpicks if you can prove it's able to handle the forces specified by the county as the minimum requirements. Hansen provided me with a structurally engineered plan which i submitted to our building department and since our house is one story tall none of our interior is load bearing so I was able to sketch out a floor plan in a 5 doller app i purchased and submit that for the interior approval. yes we are going to pour the slab next i believe as a single pour but we are going to hire that out. i helped my neighbor do his slab in his shop and that made it very clear to me that i wanted to hire that out lol.
Lol that's awesome! I'll check and see what they require. My building department will probably be the same way since it in the middle of nowhere lol. Thank you so much! It's looking great, looking forward to more videos!
Yes that will definitely help. Our ground is full of rocks so it’s hard for us to do those properly . Hardest issue for me was how little post I had to connect them to especially around doorways. Mine was only an issue that way because my posts sit on brackets.
Does placing the poles directly into the ground (instead of the concrete piers as you have done) significantly reduce the ability to finance and insure the completed building? If so this would reduce the resale value as well as the pool of buyers should you ever decide to sell.
That’s a good point. I’m not exactly sure as we are building without a mortgage. From what I’ve seen online some companies are stingy about new construction loans on this kind of building but I’m not sure about resale. We had our building engineered and inspected just as thoroughly as any other building would so if anyone refuses to issue a mortgage on it it would be out of ignorance. Thankfully the concept of bardominiums is growing quite a lot in popularity so by the time we’re ready to sell I don’t imagine it will be much of an issue.
The people who I know who have built "pole barn homes" just call the banks and tell them they are looking for a loan for a single story home. Do NOT use words like "barndominium" or "pole barn". Technically, this is a single story home.
Hey Gina! we paid 55k for an engineered kit. I dont know how helpful that will be to you given how much has changed since then in the market. you can check out our full cost break down video here ua-cam.com/video/GliIKjTMax4/v-deo.html let us know if you have any more questions! ^_^
Looking GREAT guys!! Thanks for the review we are getting ready to get our plans drawn up and Hansen is definitely at the top of our list for consideration.
typically they recommend doing it when the roof is done to protect the slab while it dries but before the walls get put in so its easier for the contractor to get around. that was our plan till it took me too long to make it before winter. my kit supplier recommended that we don't pour till after the roof is done because you run the risk of dropping things on it and permanently damaging it. I've seen it done both ways though so its up to you.
It’s been a pretty rough go tbh. We have run into a lot of difficulty and our county is being unreasonable about some things. The project is close to getting done but we’re in the thick of it. Building is still doing great though
So they don't install it for you? Steel building companies not only deliver the materials, but also construct the whole thing for about the same price. That's pretty chinsy of Hansen.
Finally one of their customers posts a video. I've waited for a long time to find one.
felt the same way when i started the process so i thought it would be useful. keep an eye out for the hansen response video. should be informative!

@@HartandHome where r u from?
I really appricieate this video and I will be coming back to it taking notes. I plan on doing this in the next year and I will be solo.
Glad you found it useful! My tip to you would be go as small as you can and design your building so you can expand it over time!
Thanks for the thorough review and we will take any and all feedback to improve here at Hansen Buildings!

Do you think the spash planks could be supported but driving a steak in the ground and nailing them to it every few feet?
Yes that will definitely help. Our ground is full of rocks so it’s hard for us to do those properly . Hardest issue for me was how little post I had to connect them to especially around doorways. Mine was only an issue that way because my posts sit on brackets.

That is SUPER EXCITING! cant wait to see what you guys do. when you get something locked down send us a picture id love to see!
I am curious why you chose not to lay your foundational slab first. Seems like it will be more complicated after the fact.

Why have you not posted finished barndominium?
just haven't had time. life has been so crazy and for the first time in years we have a small amount of free time and need to heal lol.
Very informative video! Thank you for sharing.
Your welcome! Being helpful to people makes all the effort we put into these videos worth while
congrats, nice building to diy
Hows it holding up

LOL thanks for the vote of confidence Charlie!

What state/province are you in?
We’re in Washington state
WOW! I called and left numerous email and voicemail and no one answered! So upsetting!
might just need to give them a little bit of time as they are a smaller company. Good luck!
55k for a diy pole barn that takes 9 months is ridiculous. Where I live I can get a metal building installed in a week for about the same
Perhaps but it probably won’t be engineered and we’re also out of the crazy supply shortage now to.
@@HartandHome is it 55k including the foundation or is it just for the diy kit?
@@LunaDaSavageprob just the kit. 8 yrs ago did 40x60x16 kit was 22k
