Most of the unsafe places are in the North India otherwise India is beautiful. Avoid big cities and you are mostly fine. Taking the fact that people in a certain culture tend to blame women for their own assaults as saying something about that culture’s predominant religion is a dangerous game. I’m not saying that religion *isn’t* a factor, but if you’re going to draw such a bold link between cultural attitudes and religion, you’re indicting many religions, VERY MUCH including Christianity. I grew up in the South, and BOY OH BOY is it common for Southern Evangelical Christians to blame women for being assaulted. I’m not saying everyone does it, but is VERY common in that culture.
Does this say something about Christianity? Maybe it does. Not all Christians think this way, certainly, but many conservative Christians do and are very open about it, and victim-blaming is definitely deeply entrenched in many conservative Christian societies. Non-religious people in the Western world are certainly overall less likely to blame women than people who call themselves Christians.
In conclusion: if you want to blame Hinduism for everything here, go ahead, but just acknowledge the implications for Christianity or probably any other religion that you might happen to like.
(And no, before you say it, I’m not saying that all religions are exactly the same in their treatment of women. Most religions have certain more liberal sects whose adherents are less likely to victim-blame and other more conservative sects whose members and more likely to do it, and the overall distribution of people among liberal and conservative sects certainly varies for different religions.)

India is a failed society. There were so many gross aspects to this story. The first 3 police officers who did not help the man who was robbed. The villains themselves. The passerby’s who saw the couple was hurt and kept going. The hospital staff who left the boyfriend on the floor to suffer initially. The lawyer.
There are so many sociopaths in one place that I’d never risk traveling there.

As an Aussie, I went on vacation to India for the first time ever in 2012 and spent a month travelling around including spending time in Delhi. I loved it and the experience put India in my heart as this wonderful place. When I came home, I was telling everyone what a great place it was and how much I had loved travelling around the country. About 2 days after I had arrived back I saw this in the news and everyone who I'd been speaking to about my trip told me they'd never want to go there. It saddened me and I spent a lot of time following this case. Until this day, I am still sickened by it more than most other crimes I've read about. It was such a contrast to the India I had seen.

All these Countries have their beliefs and ways of running their Countries and of Course the way we live in the West is completely different, but R*pe and Murder are wrong No Matter what Country you live in.
