EXACTLY! As a younger brother myself i was really pissed off when he said he killed himself. This is absolutely the media's fault. Japan's shame culture creates this "guilty by association" perception which i think is absolutely merited with the parents since they raised Tomohiro, especially the mother, but the brother was just as much of a victim from the abuse. The media in japan has absolutely no heart when it comes to privacy and they should be held accountable for his suicide. Unfortunately, it's common in cultures that insist upon a group identity taking precedent over individual identity. To accept less-than-perfect academic performance is to accept that people are different, and not built to excel in the same environments. Had Tomohiro's parents not pushed him and abused him as they did, and instead encouraged his strengths as an individual, he might very well have gone on to be a successful anime/manga artist, rather than a murderer. He might even have found a partner, given that good/stable people are attracted to people who are mentally well and self-assured.
The truly horrifying part of this entire story is that none of it needed to happen. It could've easily been changed at any point.

By saying that, I am not justifying his murderous deeds; many East Asians, including myself, suffer or suffered the same fate: I got evicted four times by my parents during my junior high school years, and during the summer after I had finished Grade 9, I got kicked out twice by my father for being unable to enroll in the best senior high school of the city when I was only accepted by the second best one. I know it's Japanese culture for kids to be high achievers but how to parents not realize that basically telling your child nothing they do on the first try is ever good enough and never telling your child how proud you are of them can have terrible later life consequences, and while every case is different and the child may not grow up to commit mass murder, they may just harm themselves or that feeling of inadequacy will go on to ruin every relationship the child has in the future because in the back of their mind they're always going to think they aren't good enough for anyone and that is a horrible way to go through life.

There is no excuse for his actions but I can empathise with his state of mind.
I can't put into words how this has made me feel.

I was actually on holiday in akihabara when the massacre occured. I was in a 2 story DVD store (holy hell that brings me back) when I suddenly heard police sirens blaring by. What struck out as odd though was they were stopping in front of the store and the officers were coming out.
When I was talking to other tourists they initially thought it was a gunman and people were being told to take shelter in nearby stores. But being an idiotic curious individual at the time I continued walking around and spotted a crowd gathering in the alleyway and a swarm of police seemingly attending to somebody.
It was only later that night on the news that I realised the killer was that person being restrained was indeed Tomohiro, and that the body count he racked up were in the double digits. That 2008 holiday was an interesting one for sure.

Used to criticize others but found out that once you recognize anothers hard work or attempt, it just about guarantees success for them over time. I also have seen how harping on them or saying negative things about them affects performance, too it guarantees failure over time, so being positive AT ALL TIMES AROUND INSECURE KIDS IS A LITERAL LIFE SAVER. Found our just how important words can be when I saw its affect on kids personally year after year. Be good to the kids around you, you have no idea how their life is, and you can make a big difference in their lives! Dont be like his mother, she is directly responsible for this guys outlook and later acts. People are vulnerable, insecure and open to suggestion, so be a light in this otherwise very dark world!

I feel so bad for the victims and I'm equally concerned about the current state of our society. Just like it's happening in Japan, we are seeing similar things in America. Each culture has it's own issues with it's lost & isolated individuals.. It's already increased in America and I hope something can shift in society that can give the younger generations more ways to interact, not harbor these toxic feelings, have distractions, spend time outside, etc. I know it's like asking for world peace but I just wish people could stop somehow getting to this very toxic place where they decide to do something to hurt others like we saw in this video.. It makes zero sense to me. No matter how sad, lonely someone gets. I'll never understand turning those feelings into allowing yourself to hurt others. It's such a awful mentality.
