After it became public that a notorious Canadian serial killer was about to publish a book, the public response was not only revulsion but outrage that a killer could profit from their crimes. Canada quickly introduced legislation making it illegal to do this (i.e., profit from a crime).

@@xaviermillar9375 I agree with this and understand completely (it was due to outrage especially from a few very dedicated families of victims who have always stayed involved in the case to ensure nothing like this happens).
However. As a Canadian, and someone who wants to read the information, I'm extremely salty that I can't read the book. It hasn't even been scanned or uploaded online. -_-
If anyone is planning on seething about this comment btw, don't bother. Incredibly obviously, I support and understand the reasoning behind it. However, I want to read the fucking book. Nothing more, nothing less.

Now matter how old a child is, you knock before you go in and if they are old enough to answer and there isn't any REAL reason to go inside, you wait for them give you permission. Since this boy had violent tendencies it is likely that he threatened his parents in some way if they entered his room. Japanese mothers tend to be submissive and too scared to intervene.

As a german with a japanese husband i would have liked you to also explain that the asian swastika is also drawn differently than the nazi swastika. The symbol is used not only for buddhist temples but in general is used in MANY many religions and is supposed to bring good luck and fortune, which is why he probably used it for his god, since he was sure he protects him and brings him good luck with his murders. I understand what you mean, and I feel you, I really do. But this kid was 14 and didn't get the care he needed when he needed it. I know I did some really stupid stuff at 14 that I wouldn't want to haunt me the rest of my life. Nothing like this kid, but I had a very different upbringing than him. I'm sure you did some stuff you regret too. Would it be fair to hold you to your sins as a child? I don't think so.
This treatment of child criminals isn't unique to Japan. Most Western countries do the same thing with child criminals. If anything, I applaud Japan for their handling of the case. They really tried to protect the identities and privacy of everyone involved, and Japan appears to have a better system for reform of child criminals than most Western nations. I think we could learn a thing or two from the way Japanese society handles some things in these cases.
That said, I understand how it can feel raw and like the kid is being protected or getting off easy. I think it's fair to give him a chance to grow and actually have some life experiences that teach him to learn the meaning of life and death for people. They should keep a close eye on him, treat him like he's on parole well into adulthood. And if signs show he is relapsing, you take him in then. I just think it's fair to give him a chance given his age. At 16 I would have a different opinion. But my daughter is 12 and I know for sure she isn't fully aware of the far-reaching implications some of her actions may have, and I doubt she'd be much better at 14.

It's sadly exactly the same in regard to many 'Asian' families who do 'honour' killings. It's happened a few times here in the UK amongst mostly Pakistani community members. Parents or family killing their child or family member for bringing shame on to the family. Or ehat they consider shame.
I recently watched a true story crime drama named 'Honour' and it was about a girl who's father and uncles and cousin killed her bcos she fellin love with the wrong man that the family didn't approve of. So killed her amd hid her body and tried to kill her boy friend too. It was him who told police and reported her as missing. Her family didn't report her missing which spiked police interest and ended up arresting a few family members and one was remanded in custody and stupidly talked about the murder who was there and how and where they got rid of her body. Turned out she'd been to the police 4 or 5 times to report situations she'd been through with her father and uncles but one police woman didn't believe her n labelled her a habitual liar, another recorded her name wrong. The tv drama about it was very good.
Sadly it's happened quite a few times here though. And sadly that's part of their 'culture'. Sickening really.

Idk about America, mate. All those places you named have shorter average sentences than the US. And other than Japan, the US is the only one that still has capital punishment. The US also has the largest prison population in the world. Japan may give juvenile offenders slaps on the wrist, that don't add up for their crimes. But the US tends to over-criminalize and turn the justice system into another business to derive revenue from. And clearly it's not working out (since I'm pretty sure crime rates & recidivism rates are worse than all the countries on your list too). Our crime rates are consistently higher than Japan's, so maybe we could learn something from them.

One thing I found eye rolling was when he said he got tired of killing cats is when he decided to kill people. That’s textbook serial killer. They almost always do that. Small animals to people, in this case small people.

The fact that this opinion is vilified by many, disgusts me. Humanity is going down a dark path. The child was simply below the age of criminal responsibility. He could only be held accountable if he were 16, which he was not, otherwise he would have been hanged. The LDP has lowered the age of criminal responsibility from 16 to 14 because of this case (it was previously lowered because of the Junko Furata case IIRC) and will probably allow capital punishment for 10 year olds, eventually, but that is something for the future to reveal.

32:25 I'm fairly confident that the title "存在の耐えられない透明さ" is a reference to Milan Kundera's novel "Unbearable lightness of being" (in Japanese "存在の耐えられない軽さ"). I also think "transparency of an existence I cannot stand" is a bad translation because the head of the phrase is "透明さ", not the "存在の…" subordinate clause. It should rather be translated as something like "The unbearable transparency of being".

How did this guy get let out on parole ?? A friend from school was found guilty of murder and was 17 at the time and his friend actually committed the murder while he was passed out from alcohol and anti anxiety medication and had lost his best friend to suicide 10 mths earlier … so his friend woke him up saying they had killed the girl and they ran and caught hours later with blood on them both and he accepted his fate although he tried to kill himself
The first time in custody… and almost died and then was sentenced to life and parole after serving 80% so he was released after 18 years and was in his 30’s on his release . He expected to
Be killed by the girls family and fully was okay with it but again he turned to drugs and the crime world … I hope
He is happy and in a good place doing good but I’m not sure… parole is a joke
