This song the sound of silence did capture my attention and admiration for what I will call it a masterpiece. David the singer from Disturb brings hidden emotions in a perfectly executed song... wow!
The S&G original The Sound of Silence is one of the greatest songs in the history of music. I've said this before but Disturbed's version, and I'm not a Disturbed fan, is the only version that can bring tears to my eyes. Music is and always will be the purest form of expression.
Disturbed is not usually my taste in music, that being said, for me, this rendition of the S&G classic, was nothing short of brilliant. I actually love the low, dark beginning - you can feel the solitude, big emptiness around - it is a silent place, but than step by step the voice takes more energy, and the crowd is around, everything filled by sound, but inside the people there is still the silence and they have to overcome that distance. He is like thunder from the sky with his rough voice trying to brake in to the silence, in to the people. And that is exactly how I felt listening to his version. Simon and Garfunkel explained what is going on and I agreed with them, but David fights against the silence with the same words, but "different song".
I was 14 years old when Disturbed formed the band. I have loved David Draiman's voice from the first time I heard it. The years that followed were so that he could perfect his craft. What a fucking legend.
I think what made this performance is his vocal range and power. Some vocalists are locked into a certain vocal range, but not Draiman---he can hit the highs and lows with authority

I really like the original version by Simon and Garfunkel. But when I listened to this cover for the first time I had tears in my eyes. The way David sings it is so touching and so emotional... it's unbelievable
The story the official video tells is nothing short of amazing! A world without music, a world fighting to recover and the struggle to reunite composers and musicians and how the survival of mankind depends on it. As a lifelong “jock” and athlete, my youngest son plays the piano and is truly amazing. We must never let school programs die out…. We must save music programs at every level in the schools!!!
This is a drummer’s perspective here. One thing I love about David’s voice is how dark it is. I couldn’t help but notice that whenever you (Ken) replicated the singing, it was very bright. I thought I would share that, because I feel like Ken has a naturally bright voice, compared to David’s darker voice. Either way, I love both the song and the analysis.
I wouldn't listen to this for a long time. I'm a huge Disturbed fan and I'm also old enough to remember hearing the original. I thought this would be disastrous! I was so wrong! Every time I hear it it gives me chills. David is an absolute vocal beast!
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy Indeed it has! I typically do not care for cover versions. There are 2 others that I have found that are amazing, "Tennessee Whiskey" by Chris Stapleton and "Zombie" by Bad Wolves. Dolores O'Riordan was actually planning on recording with them. The day she was set to record her vocals was the day she passed! Bad Wolves went ahead with the project and donated the proceeds to Dolores' children. The video also pays homage to her! It's awesome!
David Draiman,,,the BEST vocalist there is!! Controlled and just awesome talent! The smoothness if wanted....the rasp WITH vibrato if wanted....and unbelievable range!
excellent and very helpful, I saw others but wondered how it relates to what you are teaching. For those unaware, Ken's vocal course is worth every penny!
This is one of my very favorite Simon and Garfunkel sings. He has a beautiful voice. He does sing this with great feeling, and I really did love his rendition of it. Chills at end!
You're the first vocal coach I've watched to say "I don't like this personally, and here's why...but it works for him." Respect for that! New sub. :) I've been going through a lot of grief/anxiety lately due to health issues and the first few times I watched this performance (never heard of Disturbed prior to this) the emotion had me crying, but it was a great release for all the stress I've been under.
I appreciate that you admitted you heard the song before and just did an honest review rather than pretending you hear it for the first time. I've seen a lot of reactions where it's pretty obvious the person has seen it before and feigning amazement just for the sake of views.
David gave this song another meaning. I love his talent and caring soul. If you make people to listen to the lyrics and feel it, you are a fantastic singer/band, in my opinion.
Thanks for the legit reaction. David is an amazing artist - his voice his instrument. I gotta give props too to the studio musicians and the band who also made this version truly their own. DiD S&G proud.
David is one of my fav singers from this time period. Disturbed was different and when you hear them you know it's them. Great reaction Ken for one of my Fav bands.
Nobody can duplicate his vocals, not even close. First time i heard Disturbed, the Vocals going into the high range literally give me chills from head to toes. Got chills 4 times during this video.
Gosh darn it man! The way you effortlessly demonstrate to us what Draiman's singing is inspiring! If there was even a 1/1000th of a chance I could ever hold a single note, I'd totally use your services. First analysis video of yours I've watched, it won't be the last.

I'm not a big Disturbed fan myself. But the first time I heard this I was totally blown away. I immediately sent the link to their video to my wife who is a huge Simon & Garfunkel fan. She was blown away too. This is my first time seeing/hearing them pull this off live. All I can say is, "WOW!" Such incredible passion in his voice. And yeah, he hit every note on live television. Outstanding! He deserves two thumbs up for this killer performance. Amazing! Now...if it's okay to needle you a little bit...I'd like to ask you to find a poppy cover and do something like this where you make the tune something very different than its original. Or if you have already...post a link! Thanks Ken. As always, terrific stuff.
They have been my all time favorite band even since I discovered them when I was a kid in 2000. First song I heard was Prayer. This cover he did only made me love them even more than I thought possible
The really amazing thing is that Ken manages to sing each one of the songs he analyzes in a great way, and imitate both the singers' mistakes and right notes, and so many different styles, in order to make his points clear, but he is never too overly technical, boring or offensive towards the artist.
Ken, your truly an awesome guy. I've watched many "vocal coaches" react to this song and yet your the only one I have learnt something from. The best. Kudos
Wonderful review Mr. Tamplin. I'm very critical about new versions of old songs, but I admit Disturbed made a great job on this one. I can listen to the original and to this new version without problem.
I love David`s cover of this song! It makes perfect sense that he had trained to be a Cantor. Perfect enunciation, the emotion... I would pay money to hear him sing "Kol Nidrei".
This is the best 'Vocal Coach' reaction to this song I've seen. Most of the others talk about what he's doing at various points, but in no way could they actually sing it. I'm pretty sure from the demonstrations of the various ways he was changing his voice throughout that you could perform a pretty credible version of this.
I guess I'm weird, because I would still "oooh and awwww" [of course not to the same degree] a performance that I have seen before. One should never lose his or her ability to do that with a great performance.
I have no problem with you being inspired again and again. I just have a hard time with the people who are pretending that they are hearing something and being surprised by it, when in fact they have prepared what they are going to say and faking spontaneity. If it's an honest response, that's fine. If they actually know what they're talking about, that's even better. 😊
Mister, I really like the way you make your comments and demonstrate vocal techniques right on the spot, with your own voice! So this much clearer for us to understand what's going on. I've seen some other vocal coaches reacting to songs and almost none of them does it too. Great job! Cheers from Brasil 🇧🇷
I love how you don't fake reactions as if it was the first time you watch the video, and describes so real the technical content of the song... 🖒👏 You got a new suscriber from Chile!
Hi Ken! Great analysis of their version of this classic tune. Never looked at it the way you do. Awesome stuff. David sure has an amazing voice. Bravo 👏

Also when Paul Simon of Simon and Garfunkel, who wrote it, says it’s the best cover of his song he’s heard in a personal letter to the band, they’ve definitely nailed it! I am also a music lover of just about every genre that is out there. I really love how you break down how the vocals sound like they do & even if you’re not a fan, you’re still very respectful & nonjudgmental. And WOW what a voice you have too. Hes done an incredible job on this song, gives me goosebumps when i listen to it, so powerful and full of emotion, thanks for the rundown Ken.
This cover song gives me chills every time . I love it . Good job Ken on high lighting David’s cover song.
Thanks, samuel!
I really like the original version by Simon and Garfunkel. But when I listened to this cover for the first time I had tears in my eyes. The way David sings it is so touching and so emotional... it's unbelievable
To a long time 'Disturbed One', I applaud David, He is an artist and the master of HIS voice. Amazed since first hearing of that voice.
I've watched a few voice coaches reacting to this performance. This was by far the best. A great critique. You clearly know what you're talking about.
Lee Xixis - Thank you!
Thanks for your comment, Graham!
I wouldn't listen to this for a long time. I'm a huge Disturbed fan and I'm also old enough to remember hearing the original. I thought this would be disastrous! I was so wrong! Every time I hear it it gives me chills. David is an absolute vocal beast!
This version of an older song has taken on a life of its own, Luna!😊
👍💜😀
excellent and very helpful, I saw others but wondered how it relates to what you are teaching. For those unaware, Ken's vocal course is worth every penny!
Thanks for the vote of confidence, viewoftheaskew!
This is one of my very favorite Simon and Garfunkel sings. He has a beautiful voice. He does sing this with great feeling, and I really did love his rendition of it. Chills at end!
It's a great song, and I like the original as well as the Disturbed rendition. They are two completely different approaches to the song.
💜😀
Okay, I would love to hear Ken Tamplin do a similar version of this with the Disturbed factor, even if it’s in a lesson version.
Thanks for the suggestion, Listillo!
I second that motion! Ken, you would kill it!🤘🤘
i'd love to hear that too :)
come on Ken, you can't say no now!! :)
💓💕
I appreciate that you admitted you heard the song before and just did an honest review rather than pretending you hear it for the first time. I've seen a lot of reactions where it's pretty obvious the person has seen it before and feigning amazement just for the sake of views.
👍💜😀
David gave this song another meaning. I love his talent and caring soul. If you make people to listen to the lyrics and feel it, you are a fantastic singer/band, in my opinion.
Thanks for weighing in, T T!
@@kentamplin Thank you!!
Thanks for the legit reaction. David is an amazing artist - his voice his instrument. I gotta give props too to the studio musicians and the band who also made this version truly their own. DiD S&G proud.
Ken is amazing, taking the time to reply so many comments, that’s commitment and respect 😄
Sometimes it takes me a while to get to them, but I try.
David is one of my fav singers from this time period. Disturbed was different and when you hear them you know it's them. Great reaction Ken for one of my Fav bands.
one thing people who are just casual fans of Disturbed don't know is that they almost always do a cover of an existing song on their albums.
Nobody can duplicate his vocals, not even close. First time i heard Disturbed, the Vocals going into the high range literally give me chills from head to toes. Got chills 4 times during this video.
Harry Nutsac 👍👍👍
Gosh darn it man! The way you effortlessly demonstrate to us what Draiman's singing is inspiring!
If there was even a 1/1000th of a chance I could ever hold a single note, I'd totally use your services.
First analysis video of yours I've watched, it won't be the last.
He apparently was sick when this was recorded also. Crazy control for being sick.
Absolutely, Shane!
yeah....the autotune guy had to be on his A game that day I'm sure....
@@willytrouble88 you can hear a digital autotune effect at some points so it definitely is digitally altered, but he can definitely do this song live he’s a very strong singer
Dramain was trained as a Jewish cantor like Neil Diamond was, so to him it's a very spiritual and religious thing.
What is?
They have been my all time favorite band even since I discovered them when I was a kid in 2000. First song I heard was Prayer. This cover he did only made me love them even more than I thought possible
hell yeah....I like how the live version is looked at more than the studio version. Good shit on David's part.
Indeed. Thanks, Zachary.
The really amazing thing is that Ken manages to sing each one of the songs he analyzes in a great way, and imitate both the singers' mistakes and right notes, and so many different styles, in order to make his points clear, but he is never too overly technical, boring or offensive towards the artist.
JaguarStar Thank you!
David Draiman is a vocal GOD!!
You know a singer’s legit good when the legendary Ken Tamplin gives him two thumbs up.
Thanks, fridz66!
Very nice to have you do this, as the most competent and proven vocal coach among-st:) I will be following this series very closely. Thank you!
Nikola, thank you for your interest!
That why he is so unique. His vocal cords are going effordless trough that pressure.
Thanks for weighing in, Domen!
this is the best react video of Distubed that I have ever seen! Ken you are an amazing singer and teacher!!
Thanks for the kind words, frank392!
I've listened to his version many times and I still get goosebumps, I love the style and love your reaction coach :-)
No vocal expert by any means. David's vocals has moved me and it's just so powerful. Love it
😊
Ken, your truly an awesome guy. I've watched many "vocal coaches" react to this song and yet your the only one I have learnt something from. The best. Kudos
I'm glad you learned a little bit, Ethan! Thanks!
Wonderful review Mr. Tamplin.
I'm very critical about new versions of old songs, but I admit Disturbed made a great job on this one. I can listen to the original and to this new version without problem.
Thanks for adding your spice to the mix, Glassbreaker! I appreciate your comment.
I love David`s cover of this song! It makes perfect sense that he had trained to be a Cantor. Perfect enunciation, the emotion... I would pay money to hear him sing "Kol Nidrei".
Useful information. Substance. Professional critique. Awesome.
Thanks for your comment, Bob! 😊
This is the best 'Vocal Coach' reaction to this song I've seen. Most of the others talk about what he's doing at various points, but in no way could they actually sing it. I'm pretty sure from the demonstrations of the various ways he was changing his voice throughout that you could perform a pretty credible version of this.
Man I get goosebumps everytime I hear that song with disturbed
Me, too, Fabian. It's a great song.
One of my favorite musical performances all times. Must have listened to it a couple hundred times by now.
John Smith 👍👍👍
Dave was pissed because they put autotune on his singing!
I like the explanations you give so one can understand the craftsmanship behind the songs so much better.
Glad to hear it is helpful for you, Matthias!
Thank you kindly!
He did great on this tune I don't care wat anyone says his voice is deep naturally. But ty for reacting to this cover. I ❤ disturbed.
Thanks for your feedback Cheri Gemerek!
He has been trained in opera for many years. Which is why he has and maintains an incredible vocal
David could sing ring around the Rosey to me every day and I'd be hypnotized.
That would be awesome, especially if he sang it in his monster voice.
Shoots and Ladders by Korn. Probably the closest you can get lol
I appreciate your candidness with respect to admitting you've seen & heard prior to post. Also, I'm glad you chose a live version.
Thanks for the kind words, John!
I've seen so many 'vocal coaches react to' videos on songs, but you actually seem like one of the few who is one and knows what he is talking about
I appreciate that, Zulamun!
I love how you don't fake reactions as if it was the first time you watch the video, and describes so real the technical content of the song... 🖒👏
You got a new suscriber from Chile!
Hi Ken! Great analysis of their version of this classic tune. Never looked at it the way you do. Awesome stuff. David sure has an amazing voice. Bravo 👏
Thank you for commenting, George! I appreciate it!
I am a Disturbed fan, I absolutely love this particular live performance. I’m new to you’re channel & so far I’m enjoying what I’m seeing/hearing. Thank you for being so positive & sharing your gift 😊 xx
Nightwish - Ghost Love Score (official live) Would really like to hear your opinion of Floor "Wonder Woman of Metal" Jansen! :)
Thanks for the suggestions, Kari!
This suggestion needs more up-votes.
Yes!
Love it. He sounds like 4 different singers in just one song. Some singers always sound the same even when trying to sing like others.
Thank you for not pretending.
I have really been impressed with David’s singing since they came back from hiatus. I remember seeing them live in 2010 and he struggled to get through their set. Now he’s flawless and can show off his vocal talent
