You should go watch their live version of this song on Conan. Also, I’d suggest you watch their live show in Germany at Rock Am Ring , Down With the Sickness is the song. This is in their normal heavy metal style, but it’s awesome. David Draiman’s voice is amazing.
I actually have tickets to see them in April 2025 as they are doing a tour in the US. I think they have overseas ones too, but not sure. As David Draiman is 51, his voice and touring etc, who knows how many more concerts they’ll do. So, I’m very glad I was able to get tickets.

I'm 73 and when I first heard this, maybe 5 years ago, I was stunned and obsessed. I still can't listen to this one without crying. To me, the original was a standard of my youth. It was still hopeful; a warning, but hopeful. David Draiman sang this angrily, a demand that we pay attention: armageddon is here. And now Geoff Castellucci has his version, which - to me - is acknowledgment and sadness. All 3 are glorious and completely different. Thank you for doing this. I'm in awe of Draiman's power and ability to convey nuance and emotion here.

That raspy distortion Draiman introduces in the final third of the song isn't coming from his vocal chords - he's letting the soft tissues & cartilage above his vocal chords provide that texture on top of the note produced by his vocal folds. My understanding is that Draiman learned how to control his breath support and vocal tone in cantorial school, so he has a lot of precision with his vocal fry such that it sounds good instead of ugly.
I am struck by the careful way he softens his consonants, allowing him to record his audio with his mouth almost touching the microphone without popping. This approach allows him to present intimate vocals as if he's singing right in your ear. His live performance on Conan is worth listening to as well, since you can watch him work the microphone (and you can hear how he sings through a cold).

I am a stoic person. I, historically, do not cry. This song, regardless of who sings it, makes me cry...
    every
    single
    time.
I can not seem to build a resistance to it. I can listen to it back to back ten, twenty times in a row and I will cry the entire time. It is not a sobbing, curled in a corner crying. It is a wide open, standing with arms outstretched, looking to the skies and shameless crying.
No other song I have ever heard does that to me...for me.
I love, and hate, this song.
Thank you @SirHairless for this analysis. It was absolutely brilliant.

What a time to be a metal head in though, going from generations of prejudices about how metal is, what it supposedly represents and how people listening to it presumably acts. I saw Disturbed live at KC Rock Fest some years ago and they performed this song. While the rest of the concert was loud with just background noise and most of the 50,000 attendees shouting/singing, during this song, it was completely, almost eerily quiet (the only time we broke that silence was to cheer when hen changed the lyrics to "50,000 people, maybe more"). We were all completely enraptured. A huge crowd of people listening quietly in the dark to his amazing performance...it gave me goosebumps and, for some reason, made me teary. I'll never forget it.

19:20 Simon & Garfunkel said this song was about our inability to communicate effectively, many people (myself included) say S&G’s version was the warning, Disturbed’s version is the anger that the warning wasn’t headed and still continues to today.
I’m a 59 year old US Army Cold War era Veteran, I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel, but I really like Disturbed’s version better. There’s an interview with Simon on the Internet I read somewhere, and he’s asked about Disturbed’s cover of his song. He basically said that their version was on his playlist, he posted the video on one of his Social Media accounts (which he has NEVER done with any covers of his songs), and basically said (maybe not in these exact words) “The song is theirs now.”
That right there tells you how epic the cover was.
I’m a fan of Disturbed as well, have been to several of their concerts, and have even met the band & hung out backstage with them at one concert. I myself was skeptical about them covering this song, if they made it Metal I didn’t want to hear it, as you stated It’s an Iconic & legendary song. When I finally did listen to it…. I was blown away, had goosebumps, and even tears running down my face. It had a major impact on me, S&G’s version was folky & “happy” , while Disturbed’s cover moved me emotionally and made me feel like I understood the song’s message way better.

I’m just not that into most metal (there are some exceptions), so I try to avoid having the cacophony in my head if I can avoid. It’s not just metal. I absolutely love Queen, but every stinking time I hear Fat Bottom Girls I won’t be able to get rid of it for days. Not a bad song, but as an earworm it drives me nuts. What a nice surprise!😃You absolutely nailed this analysis, Sir Hairless! Your interpretation and explanations were so interesting and well-crafted that I felt like I could almost fully understand all the technical language/symbols on the musical concepts you discussed - you’re truly outstanding!👌Just like the original song, I really like this version of ‘The sound of silence’ (both the studio recording and the Conan live performance), and I think Disturbed earned a well-deserved respect for taking the huge risk of creating a metal-influenced interpretation of this monumental and meaningful folk-rock classic. I guess the result speaks for itself: this cover filled with some good dose of sorrow/angst seems to please many people from a wide range of “music tribes”. In my case, even though I’m a big fan of some types of metal songs, Disturbed has never been one of the bands I choose to listen when I want to get my fill of heavy metal; however, this amazing cover allowed me to fully appreciate David Draiman’s vocal abilities. It’s fascinating when we’re exposed to new experiences that can help us to change our minds about certain types of music/bands/singers/etc., and I’m very happy that you decided to venture into the metal(ish) territory again - thank you very much for this great video, Sir!
P.S. 1: I’m going to show this video to a couple of 'metal' friends who will likely love your analysis as well :)
P.S. 2: If I had the right to say something about the matter, I’d vote ‘nope’ to the idea of having massive piercings in SH’s chin...

I felt that soft, harmonious version was still an apocalyptic warning, and when I would sing it - which I did a lot - my version would also be loud and angry as it built toward the end. David was trained as a Cantor, and there's a lot of solid vocal technique supported the rasp, which is exactly why he can produce that sound without blowing out his voice. After about 100 listens just because I was so obsessed, my inner vocal music geek gave a couple listens just paying attention to things like vocal placement and tongue and mouth position. I'd highly recommend watching a couple reactions by vocal coaches who can explain it all far better that I can

I'm a little old lady (an Elder 😂), and when people ask me which version i like best, it's really hard to say.
This is a Sound of Silence for the world we live in now. Raw. Gritty. Dismal.
We look for solace in the music we listen to. Something to soothe your restless, uneasy soul.
When the original came out in the '60s, it was exactly what we needed.
Now, decades later, in a world we never could have imagined, THIS reflects our uneasiness, fear, fatigue, insecurity; it's just so overwhelming. At least for the Elders, who felt Simon & Garfunkel touch their heart & soul in the '60s.
This is the only world so many of you know, so to you, this song might feel a bit different.
I must say, i have a whole new respect for Disturbed. What a complex, beautiful cover.
    Edit:
I forgot to say how in-depth and informative this reaction video was! He understands stereo (🤯), and I learned so much watching this. I will only ever watch reaction videos here, from now on!

Growing up listening to Paul Simon's version, it was written as a warning but he and Art Garfunkel displayed such harmony that the meaning to the song was lost. David using his voice brought more meaning to Paul's intentions to me. Truly a stunning remake.

There is no such thing as ‘too long’ with your videos. I could and would watch an hour-long video. It's so interesting to listen to. I have no technical knowledge, I just feel the music. With goosebumps and tears and all the shebang. I'm more of a melody girl than a lyrics girl, probably because English is not my first language, and I often don't immediately understand the intention and deeper meaning behind some lyrics. So I focus a lot on the melodies, the rhythms, the instruments ... and once I've internalised all that, I can concentrate on the lyrics. 😂
And your knowledge contributes so much to my understanding of songs. I know I write this every time, but what you say is incredibly interesting to me. I look forward to every video today.
I hope it makes sense somehow.

There's a trailer for the film Bonhoeffer (the film is being released this month) and it used this song. The person/people who put that trailer together did such a fantastic job making this song so much deeper emotionally than it already was with the way the lyrics matched up too well with the German Axis and what Bonhoeffer went through. I, personally, haven't been to a cinema for nearly ten years and I equally don't care about movie trailers because they usually don't get my attention but that trailer did. I've ended up watching it at least fifteen times now over the last few months and the mere fact that I ended up emotionally invested just from the trailer made me decide to go see the film in cinema. Only it turns out no cinema near where I live is even going to show the film.

This is the song that brought me back to rock/metal after a hiatus of over 50 years. I quit listening when Joplin and Hendrix died in the same year, so close together. A couple of years ago, a friend was insistent that I listen to this version. I did, simply because that's what you do for good friends. And, I was blown away. I started listening to everything I could find by Disturbed and bands performing in the same style. My exploring has lead to so much great music and I have listened to genres and styles that I never thought I would be interested in. I finally found a home in Nightwish and symphonic metal, but I am always willing and eager to listen to other genres of music. Some I like, some I dont, but you never know unless you try, do you?

Interesting. Yes, this was also my 1st introduction to David and Disturbed. Very impressed with his voice. Not only the power, but the colours & shadings...
Metal, even Symphonic Metal, doesn't particularly call me, although did like Floor Jansens work.
A number of people have commented that they thought THIS treatment of the Lyrics carried the meaning far more accurately- than the light and pretty presentation of the original. That the previously much loved Simon & Garfunkel version pales now in comparison. That it was actually a '60's Protest Song - about a manipulation of public opinion and, even, I guess... evidence of Durkheim's 'Anomie' !?! Ie: a state of affairs - societal breakdown / divisions that are worth getting angry about!
Whatever your interpretation it means, I can't listen to the original now with the same 'ears' = this Cover has changed the landscape. ( if it hitting 1 Billion views, didn't tell us that already! ) 😮
