This song was a big part of my youth. I was in High School when it was first released. We analyzed the lyrics in English class. David Draimen turns the performance in a theatrical expression of everything the song means. By far one of my new favorite performances. Thanks for reacting.
David Draiman has one of the best voices in music history if you ask me, he’s been singing his butt off for over 2 decades. The power his voice possesses is incredible!
He had extensive training in his youth in preparation for becoming a Jewish cantor. There was another video where someone was saying that he didn't have "classical" training and I had to laugh because "classical" training came about through the liturgical tradition. Doesn't get more classical, or classic than that. He doesn't use any vocal correction, contrary to the popular Autotune opinion. He is such a stickler about this that, when he helped produce one of Trivium's albums, he wouldn't let them use correction either. He basically told them that the fans should get the same experience vocally whether from an album or a live show. So all the distortion we hear in any of his vocals is something he does himself. Absolute powerhouse, too.
I never heard of Disturbed or David Draiman until they used this song in an episode of "Into the Badlands." I liked it so much that I had to look up who sang it. That led to reading all about David's training. Truly an amazing voice that is classically trained and this song and Disturbed's version of it demonstrate his talent perfectly!

I saw and interview here on UA-cam, with Loudwire doing a Wikipedia fact or fiction video (it's actually broken into 2 parts). In it, David states that part of his ability with the vocal fry comes from issues with acid from his stomach. He actually had surgery on his esophagus to repair the damage from acid. He cannot have another surgery as there is no tissue left to assist in the repair. He now controls his issues with the gerd, by diet. That said, there's probably not going to be another artist anytime soon that can compare in his ability to absolutely kill a vocal fry. If you watch closely when he does fry, you can tell it's not from the cords. He scrunches up his nose, forcing the fry to come from his mouth throat; but above the cords. This man is truly gifted beyond reproach. I wholeheartedly agree with you Timothy, David is indeed one of the best vocalists of our age. I am in awe every single time I go to one of his concerts.
I love seeing vocal coaches such as yourself giving this so much deserved praise in their reaction videos. I guess it kind of validates my initial reaction when I first heard it. A millennial recently asked me what my fave song is at the moment. I said I can't get past Disturbed's The Sound of Silence from 5 years ago. I first heard it blaring out of my sons bedroom and I literally put my entire evening's plans on hold to listen to it, buy it, research it, watch reactions, learn more about this band I'd never heard of. It is seriously next level.
Finally someone who gets it. I've seen so many first reaction videos of this performance, and no others have understood the melding of Dramen's emotion and precision. His performance is pure soul, but at the same time, so well-trained and sculpted.
I am exactly like you in the aspect that I grew with my mother listening to Simon and Garfunkel and what disturbed has done is embodied this song and gave it new breath. I get goosepimples every time I listen to this prestigous portrayel of S@G s song. Brilliant!!!
The urgency and the darkness come from contemporary times...as dark as it was back when Paul Simon wrote this...he couldn’t have predicted where we are now...
But I believe he DID predict it. Which is why he wrote this song as a plea and a warning. Both versions are beautiful. But I believe Disturbed brought a more powerful version. Draiman is saying "you didnt listen to THEM, now listen to US". Just my opinion of course 😊
@@ChanelStuff You have to remember, to that point, Vietnam WAS our darkest times. We were literally ignoring men coming home from a fight they didn't sign up for, sometimes worse than ignoring, with little to no censure for the government putting them there. The original certainly has that "Age of Aquarius" lightness to it, let's say an optimistic delivery. But this reimagining is far more direct and in your face (Literally: In the music video Draiman stares you down). I think it's a message for the music industry though, given the imagery in the video. I think he's basically saying that the industry has a voice that it is failing to use influentially.
@@ChanelStuff I hadn't really, either, until I rewatched the video a few days ago and noticed the attention paid to things related to music. That said, there have been some songs released recently that I think are finally addressing things in the proper light :)
@@lmilton1980 After seeing Draiman perform this, I bought a digital copy and put on my iTunes playlist and really enjoy it , but I found out that hearing it that way is not at all as powerful as when I watch him sing it on a video...so you are right about him staring you down ...and for me, that visual experience of it is just that much more powerful ! He not only controls his voice to perfection, but his facial /body language if that makes sense. In other words , it is one hell of a stare, that rocks me to my core.
He was very upset that the show runners insisted he use an auto tuner because he'd had cold issues a few days before the show. He tried to tell them he was fine to do it, but they wanted an autotune 'just in case'. He was pretty angry about it as most accomplished singers are when the word 'autotune' comes into play. He killed it.

I have heard Simon and Garfunkel sing this many times and have others too. It remains one of my favorites. This one,though...so beautiful ...I cried. It is on my fueral list.
I chose this song to be played at my dads funeral around the time it first came out and I absolutely broke when I heard my grandma singing along. I didnt even think about the fact that she had probably listened to the original
DD was trained as a Cantor. It sounds like he is very specific how he sings the song because he is. He spent 3 straight hours in the vocal booth perfecting the sound and cried when he was done. He was furious with Conan's production term for using autotune on this. Paul Simon publicly congratulated him on the performance.
A couple thing I enjoy about this reaction ... you interrupt minimally with direct and informative points....and you have that awesome teacher smile; when they’re proud of a student, encouraging a student etc...

I think this cover of "The Sound of Silence" is the most magnificent song I've ever heard. It brings tears to my eyes almost every time of the hundreds of times I've heard it! He's so much more versatile than the heavy metal Disturbed style.
I saw this song -exactly- as you did!! I am so thrilled to "share" my feelings about music with someone else.. I have friends that appreciate it but don't see INSIDE the songs!! Thank you so much! I would like to mention one more thing.. the crispness of the piano playing was a lovely offset to the timpani- they just swirled around each other so beautifully! And I agree that His voice made a "lovely" song into a heartfelt song! I literally have goosebumps when he hits that grit and Bass key.." with that neon God He made.." Oh, My...! Anyhow, I appreciate and completely agree with your opinion 🙂.
When I hear the original, I hear it as someone who feels pain and sympathy for people involved in the events he's witnessing in his dream. When I hear this cover, I hear it as someone who feels tremendous frustration over his helpless to do anything about what he's witnessing in his dream. Passive versus active? Maybe. One thing to remember is that this was a recording of a LIVE performance. No studio editing, no "Take Twoes" in it. This was raw. Also, don't know if it's true, but I've heard that Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle are HUGE fans of the feel of this cover.
People bow and pray to the neon God they made = cell phone, computers, technology in general. People have never been more connected but yet farther apart. People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening, people writing songs that voices never share = people sending text messages, posting their lives online. When you send a text message there is no emotion. That's why so many fights and arguments happened through text message because people cannot hear the tone that someone is using when they are speaking through text and it is so easy for people to misinterpret what someone is saying because there is no emotion in a text message or typing out of post. Once again we have never been more connected but yet farther apart than we are today. The next time you were out to dinner at a restaurant or family park. Just take a moment and look around at all of the people lost and our phones. People are so disconnected with reality today and they care more about their neon God in their hands than anything else.

I'd be interested to hear what you think of the official video as he was ill when he performed this (with the producers forcing him to perform anyway). His official video is even more impressive (even with the visuals aside). Also, he comes from a family of Cantors...it definitely showed. His father wanted him to be a Cantor, but when he told his dad this is what he wanted to do, that wonderful man gave his complete support...and for that we should all be truly grateful.

Well jinger lol
I saw him live when he opened for black Sabbath at Alpine valley and he stole the while main stage
@@mbyeargin 😂😂😂
Thanks for posting the same shit for the 10,0000th time
He was very sick that night and still performed. Amazing disturbed is a really good band💜💜
David Draiman's voice is so iconic, absolutely beautiful!
@@lmilton1980 I didnt really think about it like that. I think you might have hit the nail on the head. Thank you😊
@@ChanelStuff I hadn't really, either, until I rewatched the video a few days ago and noticed the attention paid to things related to music.
I usually don't care for covers, but this gives me chills from head to toe.
Ya towards the end when he says "To the neon gods they made"thats the metal vocalist in him coming out
He takes the song to a whole a new level
Agreed! His passion is beyond incredible!!
@@Racingirl911 It is! I have seem lots of reaction videos and most people are left stunned after watching it!
He IS classically trained. He can do Opera Singing.
Technically a jewish cantor by training iirc.
He's trained with Melissa Cross whose background is in opera.
Can he???? I mean, I'm not surprised, because I already know him to be an amazing vocalist with all sorts of range of pitch and tone, but shit, I didn't know he could opera
@@goombapizza6335 It may not be the classical opera training you might be thinking of, he "was classically trained as a [hazan] cantor, who is someone that sings liturgical music and leads prayer in a synagogue" as a kid...which is just as impressive.
David has one of the most powerful voices in music history.
Your face told it all. Even if I had the volume down I could feel your joy watching this. Thanks for sharing.
Quite possibly one of the greatest cover versions in music history.
I love that you respected him singing the song as you did. S&G also appreciated the way he sang it. To me it's remarkable, you feel his voice. Its beautiful.
Such an amazing performance of this song. Truly too beautiful to hear without feeling emotion. I'll never be sick of this
Classically trained metal band lead, This man is awesome!
Finally someone that understands that this version expresses the anger and sadness of the world that did not heed the warning when S&G first warned us gently like children before we go make those careless choices. This is a warning for adults that heard and still are going down the wrong path. Only my interpretation of this song and the different versions. Great reaction. Gained a new subscriber
This band is HEAVY METAL, the best in fact in my opinion. I absolutely LOVE the way they did this song and you are right on the money with what you said. David Draiman has such an outstanding vocal range, his voice is so wonderful to listen to whether it be singing sweetly or full on beast mode!
Disturbed brought the song to life, gave it power & thus meaning....... GREAT JOB David & Co.
You’re the first voice teacher that I’ve enjoyed listening to, with your reaction and opinion about the pronunciation of the words. I’ve listened to this song so many times and I still get the chills when I hear it. Thank you.
he gives me chills in a good way. Simon & Garfunkel's version I also felt power from. But this goes to greater heights and depths.
Tracey South Simon and Garfunkel never got beyond “politely insistent” on their version.
Glad you listened to the live unproduced version for this purpose, and very respectful that you listened to the very end of the song. :)
God: David do you want the voice of an angel or that of the devil?
DD: Yes
Lol that's a funny comment!
I think...both!
Remember where Lucifer came from. Angels can be terrifying.
@@LassieGal , I don't know if it's true. What i knew was Norway's angel Angelina Jordan is beautiful, delightful, pleasant, pleasing & so sweet like a chocolate that full of almond.
@@ruebendejesus7039 I will check her out if she is on UA-cam. I tend to think of angels as personifying God's voice. The range of His Being. But I will definitely see if she is in UA-cam.
You said "church boy!" As a child, he ws trained as a Cantor. Nice radar you have!
Also: Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan.
David brings so much meaning to the lyrics. I'm a fan forever.
The best cover of this song ever.
I fell in love with this version of rhis oldtime song.. Because im hard of hearing and he sang clear and understood every word he sang.. This song is 1 on my top ten songs.. I agree he did a phenomenal job singing ❤💯
He has the the ability to tell a beautiful story.
I really like her videos more than other voice teachers because she doesn't overact. She seems very genuine. Cool to see this from the eyes (ears) of a professional :-)
I'll say it again, thank you for helping this non-musician understand the music and the singer's performance. Looking forward to more from you.
The Lyrics and this guy's interpretation is KILL'N IT. So Beautiful and WOW!!!!!!!!!!
The original is always going to be classical. Disturbed's version is extremely haunting
i subscribed to your channel today 👍 thanks for sharing this man's emotional voice ❤
When I tell you this is my favorite performance of this song it really is from another world I swear it is
DD was trained as a Cantor. It sounds like he is very specific how he sings the song because he is. He spent 3 straight hours in the vocal booth perfecting the sound and cried when he was done. He was furious with Conan's production term for using autotune on this. Paul Simon publicly congratulated him on the performance.
Wow..tears flow every single time I hear this..beautiful
I Truly believe that this is the best Remark of a song Ever,... Thank you so much for Reaction ma'am Disturbed song Sir, David,❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🤝🤝🤝🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭👋👋👋
It's my pleasure!
His performance makes me cry every time.
A couple thing I enjoy about this reaction ... you interrupt minimally with direct and informative points....and you have that awesome teacher smile; when they’re proud of a student, encouraging a student etc...
You can tell he has vocal training and raw talent as well
I really appreciate the lesson in the using of correct word pronunciation! I saw Disturbed 22 years ago and they will always be at the top of my list . This song by this band just rips at your guts. DISTURBED ROCKS ! THANK YOU❤
You actually do the best "reaction" videos-- Probably because you actually know what the hell you're talking about! Cheers to you : )
It amazes me that so many of the reactions to this song is to this live version when he was sick and the TV people insisted on auto tune. Do it to the original video, that is the amazing one.
I love this version too. Maybe you can react to Nightwish and their song Ghost love score. The singer Floor Jansen has such a great voice.
I agree!
And i suggest this version🙂

@@MrSkogshuggarn Absolutely fantastic version. 👍
My reaction video to Nightwish Ghost Love Score is going live tomorrow!
Ive listened to this song a couple hundred times and I get a kick out of watching the reactions of these people on youtube. Even after hearing it so much it still brings a tear to my eyes.
You need to do Jinjer - Pisces.
Its a unicorn of vocal ability, its completely unbelievable
I don’t think anyone will ever top Draimen’s voice and version of this cover. As far as I’m concerned, Simon and Garfunkel wrote and sung an amazing song. David perfected it. And the rest is history (David has had classical training btw).Thank you for your commentary. It helped a lot!
"...words...like silent raindrops fell..." Chills. Thank you.
If you want to see a reaction video where that particular phrase elicits huge emotion from another reaction couple (who don't interrupt the entire song), check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/_V7blvY_MHo/v-deo.html
I agree completely with this teacher.....I am in awe with David's voice, and the way he enunciates each word...and the true effort he insists ...giving us a song that will last for eternity...thank you, Mr. Draimen...we've been waiting for you...for many years...
“Simon & Garfunkel’s version represents a warning, while Disturbed’s version represents rage since the warning was ignored.”
This.
Paul Simon said this is the best cover he's ever heard of The sound of silence and he was going to put it on his playlist on his phone that's a high praise Disturbed is a heavy metal band from Chicago I think they've been playing since 1988
This is one of my favorite songs growing up. And also singing, the sound of silence, in choir. To hear Disturbed sing this. I just love the song even more. Thank you for sharing.
You asked too recommend a song to listen to. There's only one that came to mind. It is off the album, Yoni, the songs name.
Love is all.
Very beautifully the way this young lady sang.
I am looking forward in hearing more from you.
Thank you.
George.....
And he sits down troug the whole performance....this man is incredible.
The original was a warning, this is anger that we didn't listen to that warning.
Sean Thom so right!!!
Yet here we are. Watching on cell phones....
Well said.
Sean Thom you are so right. if we don't listen we will not make it
I wrote that somewhere else on the actual video somewhere. Spot on brotha
From another place. Just an incredible voice. Brings a tear to the eyes. Wonderful
"almost church boy quality" David was classically trained in a synagogue. I'm amazed at how accurate the description was.
I searched for David Draiman's email address and got about 4. I emailed them all, begging him to do more music like this. This is music of the gods and the world needs more! I think this cover of "The Sound of Silence" is the most magnificent song I've ever heard. It brings tears to my eyes almost every time of the hundreds of times I've heard it! He's so much more versatile than the heavy metal Disturbed style.
Absolutley beautiful cover. Always bn a fan of disturbed, but this may b my favorite song by or covered by them. So technical, love it
What’s crazy about this performance is that he was sick and still sounded absolutely amazing!
lmao I live how David was scanning the crowd as if to say, " Do YOU doubt me?" "How about you sir?"
Its surprisingly powerful to be honest. 👏👏👏👏
I have the same smile on my face listening to this too.
He is really good.
This also gave me an appreciation for this song that I didn’t have before 😊
When I hear the original, I hear it as someone who feels pain and sympathy for people involved in the events he's witnessing in his dream.
People are so disconnected with reality today and they care more about their neon God in their hands than anything else.
thats exactly what i believe too
I am new to disturbed and have been so impressed with this song that i have heared it, with reviews, dozens of times now. Thank you for your lovely, professional presentation, it was a pleasure to watch.
Amazing! His voice brings me to tears every time..
Elizabeth Ayres I’m right there with you. Not sure why, but his voice just grabs me like no other. I get emotional and I’m not sure why.
Disturbed turned this already great song into a hymn.
I felt the live performance was better than the official song. Seemed to be a wider range and more raw. But I'm also considered tone deaf.
