    Learned a lot from your video (at least one of those Raps matched your shirt! #31 at 8:27) I've never jigged a Rapala from a boat as I am a new boat owner. Fishing a big, fast river confluence I see a lot of folks using them. I've got plenty in the gear box for ice fishing but may be to small for that application.
    Thank you for a great informative lesson here, and a few LOL's I am subbed!

    So I bought my first jigging rap yesterday, a 5/8th Pearl White to use on the Ohio River. Not sure if white bass/sauger/hybrid bass will eat these but they do like blade baits. I am fairly confident I will lose my $7 bait in the first 15 minutes on all the junk at the bottom of the river, I am planning on cutting the front hook off the bait to see if that helps. It's sorta odd that walleye are one of my favorite fish besides smallmouth considering we don't have many around here. I think I am going to drag my boat to Minnesota next year. Thank you for the tips..will be subscribing in 3..2...1....now

    Very informative video. I have a hand full of jigging raps. Still working on getting them out but that's besides the point. I've never had much confidence in them due to lack of experience. My question is should I start vertically or cast and retrieve to gain confidence. Thanks

    • @TargetWalleye
      @TargetWalleye  2 роки тому +2

      Not a bad idea to play around with it vertical first to get a better feel for the jigging cadence and timing of when the bait hits the bottom and when to snap again. Then start doing short 20-30' pitches away from the boat.

    • @TargetWalleye
      @TargetWalleye  2 роки тому

      Yes I would say 97% of the time in openwater I'm letting it hit bottom. Only exception for me is if there's junk weed that's constantly fouling the bait. But then I usually get frustrated and switch spots to something cleaner lol.

    • @TargetWalleye
      @TargetWalleye  2 роки тому

      I try to keep it as close to the stock size as possible. If I have to adjust it I will bump up just slightly. I know some guys sweat by going with a bigger treble but the problem I have is the bait will foul more often then.

Avid Catfish, Crappie and Smallmouth fisherman. I own a few jigging wraps and plan to buy more and apply what I have learned ice fishing. I will also will try drop-shot fishing for Walleyes too. Any thoughts on that technique would be appreciated. Wonderful work, thanks for your dedication, sharing of the sport. Cheers.

      Dropshots work amazing for walleyes! In the fall we love running small sucker minnows on them. And all summer long a dropshot with a nightcrawler catches walleyes when nothing else will.

    if most fish you're hooking are snagged outside the mouth or in the belly on a particular day, switch to a jigging spoon of similar weight and jig it the same way as the balance jig. you will hook every fish in the mouth with the spoon.

  • @veedubin187

    Great video! Do you always cut off the front hook for these when Ice Fishing? Also, when adding the VMC bladed hook do you add it to the back hook or only the front hook??

    • @TargetWalleye
      @TargetWalleye  2 роки тому +1

      I really don't nip it off all that often. Usually when I do, it's if there's a ton of ice because it's harder to play the angle to get fish turned up. I always add the VMC Bladed Hybrid Treble to the front or middle of cranks - put it where you want the fish to target and hit. Noticed if I'm running it on the far back is when I'll get short strikers as they are nipping at the blade. Jigging Raps I put it right on the treble in the middle.

      I use the smallest 2 sizes in the VMC RS Rolling Swivel thru the ice. They aren't as free spinning as the ball-bearing swivels, but they tangle up less. And I love that they are basically microscopic thru the ice.

    the best tips are intuitive to the day, I’ll try some tidbits of attraction the fishing pressure on walleye here is just unbelievable with a 8 fish 12” to 22” slot .please let’s have a lower limit to start.an stop the net surveys reducing the number of mature spawner from here.change the thinking that every walleye should hit the table as a bass tournament angler most my life don’t let them use the fish for personal gain show priority for a new level of support and action for sustaining is not good enough only better is acceptable for the future of fishing no matter what fish 🐠

      Our bass season closes in Feburuary and we can't target them again until the middle of May. But we do catch them (on purpose) thru the ice here for the next month or so on little rattlebaits, Jigging Raps and small tungsten. It's a fun way to switch things up from walleyes and panfish.

    Do you fish them the same way in an upland reservoir that don't have much cover

    • @TargetWalleye
      @TargetWalleye  2 роки тому +1

      Overall I fish them the same way, it's just a slightly different approach.... We have a few lakes and areas around here that don't have a ton of cover/structure and the fish are relating to forage versus being on a "spot on the spot." That's when it's especially important to spend more time scanning with your electronics than actually fishing. Don't fish until you're graphing fish whether that's on Side Imaging, traditional 2D or DI, or even Live sonar. If I make a handful of casts on the fish with no bites, I'll will spin around to scan again and reposition on them and try again. If still a no-go, it's time to keep moving and looking for more active fish. I remember the moment when that all clicked for me...where you mark a fish, cast right at it, and BOOM it's on. The confidence boost is insane an gives you that push to run a bunch of spots and make things happen when they maybe wouldn't have squatting on a spot/area/fish that weren't "the deal" that day. Thx much for watching!

    If you add a blade or feathers to middle treble hook, does it interfere with fish biting?

    • @TargetWalleye
      @TargetWalleye  2 роки тому

      No, there are some days you'll even get more bites doing it, but I haven't really noticed a day where you get less yet. 👊 Sneaky.
