The 67, with the modified Police Interceptor engine I think more closely embodies Shelby's intent. Once the Mustang got the 428, the writing was on the wall. All great cars, 65-70, but you're right, Shelby walked away around 68.

theres actually a road test of the 68 KR here on youtube, that SOB handles, like I'm not sure if its the same Hotchkiss suspension as in the maker of the resto mod stuff, but it says it has it, and that thing handled well, one of the old old I think road and track videos with Bill Lindon
as someone uploaded a bunch to youtube, and that was one of the best, one of the worst was a stock 71 challenger with a 383 lol like that thing just plowed

Had the chance to buy a new one in 1970 even then I figured if it was a Shelby it would be more valuable in the future, I was right. Just getting it back on the road now.

Yes the Ford built Shelby's were more about making money then a street legal race car. One could have and did spec out a Mustang GT with all the same performance stuff as the Shelby for far less money. The only thing you didn't get was all the special exterior Shelby visual add-ons.
they made a California special , with taillights as this, I think.
I like all of the Shelby Mustangs, but my favorite is the '67 GT500 with the 427.
when I was a kid there was a poor single dad down the street who had one of these as his daily driver. It was a little worn out as I recall. I'd love to know where that car is today
Some of those 428 were just about the same motor you'd get in a LTD. Good looking car though.

That 500 is my least favorite of that era, too 'busy'. My fave is the '68 GT in Highland Green. That being said, if I had a spare hundred grand I'd buy a '69 Z/28 in Dusk Blue with white stripes and white interior. It would have the JL8 four wheel discs and dual 4 barrel cross ram intake with off road cam. Maybe a hundred grand is not nearly enough!😆

The Shelby GT500, Just a F**kn Mustang? LOLOL. Yeah, no! Well, maybe, kinda, sorta, at least when compared to the earlier Hairy Chested Shelbys, the race cars for the street! Give me a minute to tell you how I come to that judgement. The Fall of 1968 was the first semester of my freshman year in college, in Memphis, Tennessee, where one of my buddies there somehow wound up in possession of a convertible GT500, then known as the "KR" for King of the Road, for a whole afternoon, the same "Don't You Dare Ignore Me" red as the one you have in this video. It was, at that point the second most potent machine I'd ever been in, tops, then, being a '67, 435 HP, 427 Corvette Sting Ray Coupe, with side pipes, whose owner had taken me along with him from Fort Lauderdale to the '68 12 Hours of Sebring, that spring. Man, It's amazing, the memories that pop up, stuff that I haven't thought about in context, maybe ever. Thanks for all you do. I've been a fan since the Speed Channel Days! All the best to you and yours.
