Or, option 3. Keep the v12, and put a tremec in it. the Aston Martin DB7 Vantage and the Dodge Ram SRT10 use the same gearbox. Yep, the V12-powered DB7 Vantage came standard with Tremec's venerable T56 gearbox. Surely the guild is capable of making an input shaft, adaptor if needed, and adding a clutch pedal if required ? Feel free to send me the $ difference between this repair & an electric conversion, David 😇
Great logical idea and likely would retain the greatest vehicle value!!!!!! One consideration is that are you just going to encounter the parts problem with the engine a year or two down the road??? Auto manufacturers are cutting costs whenever they can and the first area is maintaining parts supplies in vehicles "beyond the mfrs biased expectation of lifetime". And you might encounter the same problem with the Viper V10 as Stellantis is not that much better off. If you are going to swap an engine, it should be one from as recent a car as you can get - consider a GM LS or Ford Coyote - far newer and a more diverse array of available aftermarket parts.
Electrifying the Vantage might be simply too costly, especially for electronic systems integration, weight balancing and then encounter battery related issues due to the car not be used enough. Batteries are the happiest and last the longest when they are routinely cycled and don't do well when they sit at a fixed charge.
Dave, don't ruin Janise's car by going EV. Go with the perfect suggestion made by @rick74304.

Great "idea" in theory but not in practice. Does the engine control module have a program for manual? The engine may not run without comms with the trans control unit. Most swaps have stand alone ECMs and the car basically becomes a race car
I like the suggested option 3. Keep the V12 and swap in the manual tremec.
I like “keep the AM engine, but add a Tremec trans.” No to electric.
Aston Martin Works in the UK can put in a 6-speed manual or a brand new modern automatic transmission. Your choice. Bamford Rose in the UK are Aston Martin specialists and have a great UA-cam channel. They can likely fix your current transmission and bulletproof it against future worries. So you have 3 options that don't involved gutting and ruining your car.
Tremac behind AM V 12
Yeah, don't do any of these things. For the love of god, please no. Sell it or trade it on another car that works. Someone will fix it, believe me. The Vanquish is an incredibly special car and it does not deserve to be chopped up. I also have to imagine that neither your indy or the AM dealer actually knew how to handle this repair.
I have an Aston which needed a new grille recently, and the AM dealer swore it was NLA and hopeless. I phoned Aston Martin Works in England, spoke to a parts director, and located exactly what I needed. Within a month I had it. Not quite your situation, but similar.
My very strong suggestion is to call Works and tell them your issue and exactly what the techs here are saying, and get some real advice from the men who actually built your car with their own hands. Do not assume the dealer shop already did this. AM Works has a vested interest in keeping these cars on the road, and I guarantee will offer you a solution.

David, when I last visited Aston Martin Works Service (Newport Pagnell), I was surprised to see two Vanquishes with Ontario Canada plates undergoing manual conversions that had been shipped from Canada) the factory did a kit to convert them back in the day that one of the mechanics told me was based on many o DB7 Vantage pieces (shifter, clutch slave etc) The shifter actually came up into the car where the cupholder now is in the console so no upholstry is messed with. The Vanquish already has a Tremec T56 transmission so the Failure prone Magnetti Marelli hydro electric parts that currently shift it are all removed and replaced . The DB7 Vantage Volante I used to own was a manual and was great to drive compared to a pre production Vanquish I drove many years ago that was sent from Ford to a lighting company in Ontario I used to work for. I commented to the Ford engineer who accompanied it on how bad the transmission was and he said all of the shifting problems would be fixed on the production version (they obviously were not)
Unfortunately Aston does a great conversion, for 50 thousand dollars plus shipping there and back. I bought it for 40, put another 40 into it so I am already well over value.
With another 60 k spent it might be worth 60 k, except it has an accident when it was new on its history which devalues it some.
My only satisfaction will be to modify it, and customize it, and change out that god awful interior.

I like the idea of a viper driveline. It will annoy purists. Build a car that makes you smile while driving it or just dump it.
@@davidgrainger5994 The EON JB movie engineers built a few Vanquishes for the JB ''Die Another Day'' Ice chase stunts with Carburetted Ford 302 V8s and Explorer transmissions for the AWD coversion. There is /was one on display in the BMH museum by the AM factory in Gaydon.
I worked on an Aston Martin years ago (the mid 1970's) for some friends of mine. It needed a water pump. Just to get to the pump was a nightmare and once it was off we could not source a new or a rebuilt unit. I finally rebuilt the original unit and put the car back together. While I was working on the car there were a number of other things I noted that would soon need some attention. I told the owner what they could expect to happen within the next year or so and they chose to sell it as it was before anything else went south. They got their asking price and walked away, lesson learned. As I recall, the car had about 25,000 miles on it. A POS is still a POS no matter what the emblems say it is.
As for your car, go with the V10 Viper of better yet, a Coyote crate engine and a Tremec behind it. You can still enjoy the luxury of the car but eliminate the garbage powertrain that AM produces. Another plus is the fact that any parts you may need for the powertrain will be off the shelf and not priced as if they were solid gold. In addition, the fellows working in your shop can probably do the entire swap and help to cut costs for you.
If the transmission works properly when it works..... it's not the transmission. Paddle shifters and or the " clock spring " are to blame. Worth checking out don't you think ? Momentary shorts fool the computer and when it gets a signal it doesn't expect it choses neutral. Happens when you turn left is a big clue.

Put in a coyote aluminator crate engine. 580 hp 8200 redline and maybe a 10 speed automatic.
After all Ford did own Aston Martin at one time.
David as the previous owner of this car i would go manual- when it runs it is a beautiful ride , great cruising car and with a stick would be much more fun to drive + it will retain its value ! .....hope whatever you do = it works !!!!

Oooo I like that, that sound coming from that car would be very cool.
If you think an electrical problem is too hard to fix, just wait until you try to swap that drivetrain. Every warning light will be on in the instrument cluster. Nothing will ever work right. Unfortunately you do not have a truly skilled tech that can break out wiring diagrams, develop a test plan and start troubleshooting. The fact that you said it started when making left turns makes me think of a bad wire. If the car will be fine until it gets hot that is normally bad welds in a control unit. Even Aston dealers cannot get enough truly skilled techs. Anything that is electrically controlled and mechanically activated has two components that can fail, the electrical part and the mechanical part, the electrical includes all the wire and the unit that activates the signal. If it works sometimes probably electrical problem. Anyone that thinks the dealership is the end all be all is crazy, that is only true when it becomes a lemon law buy back and that's when the regional field engineer gets involved.
Nope, you’re not right. It was a part of the shifter system, a servo, which would not fully engage the gears. Those parts are now unavailable on permanent back order.
The car is a timeless beauty, you have multiple options, factory Manuel shift conversion, other transmissions ( suggestions have already been mentioned in the comments ). The Viper V10 sounds very intriguing, you now have a new viewer and I am along for the ride.

Go tremic transmission. Leno swears by them. Tremic might give you the parts just for publicity.

Opt for the Viper engine and driveline, in the 80's they used to drop Chevy 305's into the BMW 6 and 7 series and they ran like silk SMH LOL
There some cars that just shouldn’t be swapped and I’d say this is one of them.
The first thing I’d do is contact Bamford Rose in the UK. They are Aston specialists and I’m quite sure Mike would be able to at the very least provide some good advice. You could also convert it to a manual transmission as Aston Martin Works in the UK offers this service.
Stuffing a Viper engine and trans in or worse, converting it to an EV would be an absolute crime when there are other options. Clearly the first trans guy you used had no clue about these cars but that shouldn’t drive you to ruin a perfectly good Aston.

Hi, Chris from Australia. I can see the frustration and I know you're car enthusiasts. I can see other comments posted. There is an electric wheel conversion "protean electric wheel" as seen on Munro live which offers 2 or 4 wheel motor hub drive units (2 years ago). The converted vehicle was a Mercedes , weight for weight came out pretty equal acclaimed, with loosing cabin space. The 4 wheel version offers torque victor steering. There could be state of government funding to assist with the project. Let's know how you get on. Cheers Chris
If I have to pick the viper package. Would it be easier to get a trimx six speed manual installed to the 12 cylinder?
I would opt for a Tremec conversion, or a modern automatic. I suppose keeping the car all Aston would help retain it's value. You want to keep the muli-cylinder growl if possible. A Dodge V-10 would certainly be reliable (and fun) with parts available at your local Dodge dealer & auto parts store. And you could service it yourself!
Option 3 should solve the specific problem without messing with things that arent a problem

Keep motor and manual swap it like many with this generation Vanquish already have. It will add real value as well as desirability from a much larger audience to your car, and help offset some of the costs you've already incurred. The viper swap is ridiculous and the all electric conversion....well I'm just gonna pretend I didn't even hear that.
This is the quiet nightmare scenario that AM owners do not like to talk about: looks so pretty - but no one can fix it.
The transmission are a nightmare in those cars they sell a transmission setup with a stick. I have seen the video on it and people are extremely happy with it.
The other problem is parts for this car is extremely expensive and hard to find.
Remove the offending digits (engine and transmission) and replace them with whatever works better, and get this gorgeous machine back on the road.
Porsche Nottingham couldn't mend my 928, which had decided to stop and not start. After three weeks and a £900 bill, I recovered it to 928 Specialists in Stroud, who had it running again within a day.
You’ll never get your money out of it at this point after being screwed over by a couple different shops. Viper or Electric the only two choices? Get rid of the junk gearbox and pair that V12 with a decent box so you can get some enjoyment out of it, albeit very expensive enjoyment.
Definitely no to both options. Viper engine is major downgrade and electrification just does not do anything for the car. Aston’s are known for that great sound, keep that and either replace the transmission or get it fixed by the right specialist.

Viper. There might be newer more powerful engines out there now but they have that great look.
V10 would be okay. Definitely no to electric conversion. I’d also vote for a coyote swap with a manual or auto. Pretty cost effective and reliable. Thanks for inviting your fans to contribute.

You should see the car wizards channel, he has fixed one of these for tyler hoover, I guess it had a similar issue
To fix the gearbox you need to set it up which requires AMDS and the leads to do the Octopus Test.
As a self proclaimed gearhead and a love of all cars British (OK it is a sickness and am still working through my 10 step program) but also a recent convert to EV's I would look at an EV conversion. Lots of available equipment to do the swap, plenty of torque and driveability, etc...
The V10 would sould awesome (as does the factory V12 - when it works) but man I have been hooked big time on EV's....whatever you do with it David I am sure it will be fantastic!

If the Tremec fits you must commit! Sure would be a shame to lose the great sound that particular V12 makes.
David, keep the V12....BUT add twin turbos if there is any room....rear mount turbos ??? Adapt a six speed Tremec manual to it. By the way I likely will be dropping in within a few months regarding my Aston Martin DB5 replica build. 1996 BMW Z3 platform, Jaguar AJ16S engine from a 1996 XJR, 1 of 2 fiberglass bodies purchased from BC....see Bring a Trailer a couple years ago. Have all the glass, rubber, etc....

Has the electrical been checked? Is there a electronic part that can fail with shifting?
Aston do a manual stick shift gearbox conversation for this car. You should contact AM in the U.K. and discuss this. They should be able to send the kit to your local AM dealer to fit. It used to cost about £6k. Don’t change the engine - it’s a jewel.
Get a 6 speed ZF Touchtronic box from a DB9! Job done!
Is it the am that you had problems with 1 of the 2 computer modules? Is it a computer problem again? But hey do the lsx/6l80 UPGRADE?

Another option possibly? A new Chevy LT4 engine and transmission from the Camaro ZL1.
If you go the Viper route, might I suggest doing the full Liberty Walk treatment as well. If you're going to give Aston the middle finger, do it all the way.😊 I think that would be a totally wicked sick build. Drift/pro mod Aston Bond car. F-yah!
I think you should have someone scan the back of the motor and have an adapter plate kit for a GM transmission made for it. Then, make sure you let everyone know that you did it after it's installed and working.

Having had 2 Vipers a Gen 4 and a Gen 5 I would not put a Viper engine in anything, they sound like like a UPS truck. The obvious choice would be to just put a manual transmission in it, that is if the electronics on the engine will play nice with the manual. If not I would swap in an LS9 with the 6 speed from a ZR1, or maybe a Hellcat engine with the automatic.
Going against the grain but I would start by looking if you can fit batteries into the car. Talk to garages that do the conversions. This would be a great car if it can be done.
Having just built a factory 5 Daytona coupe, I think a easily workable 351-427 Ford with a Tremec transmission
Viper with a a safari style body . Light bar , small lift .
Sounds like an electrical issue, an electrical interlock with the transmission. A wiring diagram would be good. Contact Aston Martin UK for a diagnostic punch list. I would start with the electronics control module of the car and diagnose what signals need to appear to allow the car to be put into gear.
No room for a decent batterie pack, I would go with the viper engine if it fits. That is my 2 cents.🤔🤔😊❗Or what the previous guy said.

I think the Viper driveline would be the way to go . but squeeze every last bit of power you can out of the V10.
I would install an Ls3 with 6l80 trans. I have it in my 97 xk8. With paddle shifter.
I like the idea of keeping v12 and just swap a manual controls in.
Option 3. A Tremac behind the Jag V12
My opinion is to keep the original motor and convert it to a manual transmission that would be found in the timeframe the car was built.
Put a LENCO in it. Get your exercise in. You could take it to some local no preps and run it in the driver class
672 crate motor (Naturally aspirated ...for now :)) and ZR-1 drive line

The gearbox IS already a tremec 6sp.

I saw an electric Cobra at a C&C @ Canepa years ago ... my initial response is Why? Don't get me wrong, I've been driving a Model S for 8 years and love it. The motor makes an Aston Martin, keep it. I am also a fan of V-10s, but this car needs a V-12.

It's already got a Tremec in it! Converting it to a manual is not physically difficult. It's rigging the software that is hard. Alternative is to fit a plug and play GM 6L80. Number of cars concverted to this already. Solves all the issues. First car has already passed 50,000 miles.
Order a complete new transmission from Aston Martin in Jolly Ole England and have your shop do all the work, there a great car, AND yes you need need that V12.
Make the car as it should have been with the manual option 3 time to enjoy that v12 with a proper gearbox
Modern automatic since it seems to be available for it. It would be the gearbox that would be put in it if the car was made today.

Red V12 diesel ,550 hp. Based on multiple Lemans winning Audi TDI . Tremec behind it. You know , just to be different. And quick.
Don't change anything more! Pack it and send it to the manufacturer! Let they prepare it for the next James Bond movie!
I would be so mad. Insane to pay that money to two garages, of one is the dealer, and they are not able to fix the problems.

Aston Martin in england has a manual conversion kit for this.

Yea, put a stick in it. You get two features in one; one is a stick, and the second is an anti-theft device. Since most people today don't know how to drive a stick! Good Luck!

How about a Mercedes V8 Kompressor - they can be easily modified to 700hp and very reliable ( also lots available at a good price in a used AMG 55. Add a wide body trim kit!
All Viper running gear.a big NO on electric, drive chain and motor on A/Martin -chain it all together and drop it in the water and you have a boat anchor.

Guess high-end doesn't always mean better. Create your own Car. I definitely wouldn't do a Electric though.
If it were me I would go with the viper! I realize either way you’re changing the supposed value but if it doesn’t work and the parts are not available. To be honest I’m not a fan of electric vehicles, I think they fit a purpose of commuter transportation but that’s a whole different paradigm than I’m from and judging from watching your creations I don’t think you are as well. Leave well alone and let someone who knows what their doing like Bamford Rose in the UK and let them sort it or advise. And certainly leave the V12 and that perfect shape as is !
Please do exactly as rick74304. That way not only will you have done the same modification that "Works Service" New Port Pagnell UK did / do on the early Vanquish, but you also make the car more driveable thus potentially more appealing., Anything else will just be hemorrhaging more money and destroy the car's value.
If you go electric, it has to have better numbers than what the V12 and the Viper provide. Make that golf cart go 🙏
