I own a 2014 gt500 your right they do have tail gears in them. But it wasn’t only to reach 200 mph but to make the quarter mile time faster. You can easily reach 55-60 mph in first gear. Ford’s thought was you would have to shift less in the quarter mile making it faster.
Appreciate the input. I think Ford was trying to get over 200 MPH as a top speed and since the the s197 isn't the most aero friendly car it required those gears to there.
It was definitely for the 200 mph thing and to get a better 0-60 because of no need to shift before hitting 60. As far as the quarter shorter gearing would definitely be better there provided that you have the traction to hook it. People think the 13s are so great mostly because of the power difference and the other little gimmicky things like 220 mph gauges when the car barely hits 200 with 5 miles of road and a tail wind. It is easy to get the 5.4 cars to modified 13 numbers all you gotta do is swap the blower to a 1500 dollar take off tvs from a 13 minimum or better yet a vmp blower. They will make comparable power once running the same blower and supporting mods and have the same ceiling of around 800 wheel but the 5.4 arguably holds up better at elevated power levels vs the 5.8. The gearing is too long on the 13 it's ridiculous. It might feel pretty good with some 4.10s out back and a good tire I just think the 5.4 cars are better for the money if you plan on modding. If you're gonna leave it stock and want one set up the best stock the 13 is better sorted stock but costs a good bit more respectively.
I own a 14 GT500, and I know the 331 gears sound pretty tall. But 0 to 60 in 3.5 seconds that's moving on man! And I own the same T-shirt with the Shelby on it LOL
@@davedave2882 I'm not knocking the 13-14 but for the price difference and there is one I would buy the 11-12. They mod up easy to the same horse power and are currently 15 to 20 K less. I got that shirt at Carlisle Ford Nationals as a promo give away. I like it!
I had an '09 white w/blue striped GT500, basic bolt-on mods & 3.73 gears. Car was a blast. I'm now considering buying another '09 GT500. Great fun. The last of the broad shouldered Mustangs, the closest to the original idea, unlike the S550/650.
Just found your channel and subbed. Great informative video. I am actually working on getting my first GT500 and I keep flopping back and forth between the 11/12 or the 13/14. Your right about the price difference although, lately, prices have been through the roof. That said I have finally started to see a trend of price drops and not so quick sale times, that's getting my hopes up. Have a great day. -David
Thanks for the sub and for watching! My take would be that higher Interest rates will be slowing down demand and that will cause prices to drop. IF you are looking for a good deal on a Shelby you might want to hold off until winter. (that's assuming you are not getting a loan if you are don't wait) historically that is the lowest demand time of the year for those cars. Best of luck!
@@TonysFordsandMustangs Great advice! I will be paying cash, I hate financing. That said, I will most likely not be ready to pull the trigger until later in the year so, around winter time. I have been trying to find a (non-modified) one, which is getting harder to do. My thought is that if it's modded, it's been beat on. This will be my last hurrah, so to speak, probably the last "fun" car I'll ever buy so not so worried about millage, just that it hasn't been abused. Thanks again, great advice. Have a great day.
@@PlasticImaginationWorkshop Best of luck and I agree with everything you stated. There are still a few unmolested cars out there and IF you are patient you will find the right one.
This can be good and bad. Some people have had issues with false knock and it can be a bitch to locate the problem. Just use the highest octane fuel possible and don't worry about knock sensors.
As far as the wideband that can be added for few hundred bucks pretty easy to fix that. It's nice to have it stock but shouldn't make or break people's decision on 07-09 cars
@@midnight347 I know what you are saying but the wide bands and knock sensors are incorporated into the tune. It actively pulls timing with bad fuel. Way different than just buying wide bands. Knock sensors can be a pain sometimes but they are a lifesaver when running your motor on the edge and keeping it there.
@biffclaven3798 I am fully aware what they are and what they do. I'm saying if you put good fuel in it you won't have a reason to pull timing in the first place lol. Wideband can easily be added and have the same thing and the knock sensors aren't even needed at all depending on who you ask. Like I said put good fuel in it with plenty of octane and don't worry about knock sensors. My 2016 fiesta st has them I know what they do. It has never once had to pull timing because I've always been on 93 since new even though you "could" use 87 when stock. Now it stays on e30 mix full time so it never pulls timing. Like I said before run good fuel with plenty of octane and dont worry about it and you don't gotta deal with potential false knock
I have owned every mustang platform. 91 fox body convertible. 96 cobra. 2005 GT. 2010 Shelby. 2011 5.0. 2016 5.0 convertible. My favorite would be the 96 cobra. Light and powerful really fun to drive. Wish I had never traded it on that dog of a 2003 t bird. Lol. Right now my stable has the 2010 Grabber Blue GT500 and a triple yellow 5.0 convertible. Traded the t bird on last summer on the 2016 5.0 convertible. The 2010 GT500 is front heavy. I prefer easy cruising in it with a romp or two onto the expressway. The termec shifts so nice. Light years ahead of the 96 Cobra transmission and way better than the 2005 and 2011 5.0s I have owned. The 2016 5.0 convertible is more of a luxury car for me as it has a 6 speed automatic transmission. It really moves and on paper is very close to my 2010 GT500 in zero to 60 romps. I have kept the GT350 mostly stock. Added an SVT air intake resonator eliminator and replaced the stock air filter with a higher flow filter. Tires swapped out with more compliant Eagle F1 assymetrics. Thanks for your review as I never even thought about the heavy front end. For me I am fine with the old cast iron block over my front wheels. As style goes the 2010 to 2014 are the most iconic as the side crease reminds me of the crease in my old 1968 Galaxie 500!
I love that you grouped 07-14 together. Most group 13-14 separate like it's some totally different halo car that is far superior to the earlier ones lol. It isn't. The main reason for the power is the better blower put the same blower on a 5.4 it makes comparable power. I like the 5.8 cars I just hate how their fanboys group them separate like the earlier cars aren't worthy to be mentioned together with them although many things are the same it's just more upgraded stock. The things it is better at is very easy to change on the older cars. You'll need more stuff in the aftermarket but you can afford it since the earlier cars are 10-20 grand cheaper than the overpriced 13-14 lol. Add in the fact the gearing kind of sucks on those it's a no Brainer. I prefer the iron block cars just because of the price to build or replace one is so much less. If that wasn't a factor I'd Def go 11-12 over 13-14. I prefer the 5.4 when modding and pushing it with a bigger blower etc.
I don't have a dog in the hunt here so I was looking at things objectively and I would chose and 11-12 over a 13-14. the 13-14's transmission gears are not set up for 95% of driving that most people do and they are priced too high because of HP ratings. I don't mind the Iron block cars but they are far from the best handling car in the bunch.
A 3500 mile one owner 2011 grabber blue base car was my choice! I found the 13-14 were overpriced & weren't as fun with the tall gears! The only complaint is that's its so loud inside a highway speed I can't talk on my phone but the 6spd is the best part, other that the looks! Love it!
It's a lot of horsepower for a first car. That said my first car was a 1970 Torino 429 SCJ with 375 HP and no safety tech. As long as you respect it, and never turn off the traction control you might be ok...
They aren't crazy fast stock but pretty fast for a first car. With minor mods they wake up ALOT as in up to 150 rwhp from bolt ons or even more. Make sure you run a good sticky tire on it preferably a drag radial. Too many try to run big power and street tires and imo its dangerous if you're ever gonna get on it hard (which if you ain't gonna do that you bought the wrong car). They have plenty of potential don't listen to the people who bash early Shelby. They had less power stock because they were more restricted but they pick up more with mods than the later cars do. All 07-12 make same power with mods and they're even comparable to 13 and 14 when running the same blower and supporting mods. The 5.4 is very capable as sounds like sex. The tr6060 is a badass trans. Best manual ever offered in a stang stock. It's also different you don't see thsm on every street like coyotes.
I have a badass 07. Check it out on my channel. Performance white stripe delete. 550 rwhp with 4.10s and drag pack is fun (bolt ons) but I'm about to throw on a gen3r and make around 200 rwhp more it's gonna be a wild ride lol
@@midnight347 what you mean by if I don’t i got the wrong car 😂 recently got the 2014 gt500 and i have yet rev it pass 3000rpm and havent punch it hard
@Erix I mean why would anyone want something like this if you're not gonna rip on it some? It won't hurt it matter of fact never getting on it hard imo hurts them more than getting on them alot does. As long as you stay up on maintenence don't be afraid to flog it. Just make sure it's at operating temp before you do so.
I just picked up a 2007 GT 500 with only 1100 original unmolested miles. Performance white with Vista blue stripes is a throw back to the original GT 350. The plan is to preserve it with maintenance items and occasional spirited driving.
Congrats that's an awesome find. Before you do the spirted driving I would advise you to check the tires. IF they have not been replaced they need to be. Adhesives used to bond the rubber to the steel breakdown overtime. Any tire over 10 years old really isn't safe to drive on. Best of luck!
Thanks for the Video, well put together, I got my race red 2011 GT500 last Friday for a good price 30k 39k miles has a R title, seen auction photos not bad, has a bunch of upgrades a little over 20k in parts 13-14 rear package , makes 840 hp 810 pound feet of torque. It’s fast as hell there’s no supercharger whine though…😢
I really enjoyed the clip of Carroll banging gears, did you know they offered a centrifugal supercharger option on the 07-10s’? I didn’t until I got talking to an owner at mustang week.
IF you talked to Shelby in Vegas you could get anything you wanted from him as long as the check was big enough. The Shelby direct cars are a topic for another video and Super Snake cars I would love to video IF I can ever find one.

I didn't say you couldn't daily one. They are nice cars. They wouldn't be my first choice because the gearing in transmission and and rear were set up for high speed runs and most people don't use their car in that manner.
@@thastinger345 There's nothing wrong with that but if I was looking at buying one now I would go with the 11-12's especially since the high HP numbers raised the prices of the 13-14 by 20%.
This is an internet myth. They are technically the "best" stock vs stock because more power and better sorted stock but if you're gonna mod and especially if you're gonna swap the blower and make good power the 5.4 is "best" imo and most other Shelby guys agree with this. The 13-14 being superior cars is an internet myth ans your average enthusiast thinks this because of the power difference people think they have a higher ceiling and they absolutely do not. Ceiling is about the same but the 5.4 arguably holds up better at elevated power levels and the gearing inside the Trans is better on the 5.4.
@@midnight347 The 13-14 is an all around better car!!Higher revs, better on the track. The gearing for the 13-14 GT500 was for top speed, everyone knows that.
Get a 2010. Updated style and Has the power increase from previous year, but doesn’t heat soak like crazy like the next years aluminum blocks do. I also have terrible experience with that whole plasma deal and many others have (in multiple fords) So its best to avoid it if you can. I personally dont look at the whole weight distribution as negatively as most people do today. There are some aftermarket solutions to help a small amount, and nobody is tracking these to try and be the best or set crazy times, so its not going to matter on a cruise or daily driving or road trips. Plus not many people are paying attention to the 2010’s! I am reluctant to even comment about it! 😉
There's no need to upgrade the from the OEM supercharger. You can modify those engines rather easily and there's only so much HP the car can transfer to the ground.
I mean they're newer so of course it's gonna hold its value little better than an older one but they also costed more when they were new. The 07 only costed like 43k without markups msrp.
With out seeing the cars condition and all things being equal I think I would go with the 2012 GT. There isn't as big a HP difference as one would think and S197 is a better chassis. That said the GT500 must be hammered on to drop the price down that much or the GT is overpriced. Best of luck.
07-09 can easily make modified 11-12 numbers with bolt ons and blower swap can make modified 13-14 numbers easily. They're just more restricted stock which leads to largwr gains in the aftermarket. People act like the newer ones handle so much better and they do stock but it's still an s197 the same suspension will fit an 07-09 and better yet just get an upgraded aftermarket suspension and it'll be even better than what 10-14 cars are.
No they actually hold up well and are very reliable overall. The 07 had clutch issues but once you upgrade the clutch that doesn't matter. The 07 had a heavy lower balancer but that can easily be changed to aftermarket or a Ford 08 up gt500 one. The 07 is over 10 lbs heavier its very significant. With upgraded blowers the heavy one is more likely to break your crank snout
I will NEVER part with my '13 GT500. We brought it to Germany and for the past 6 years it has devoured the autobahns. The only thing that sucks here is the supply issues. I have been sidelined for two months waiting for a 10.00 Euro plastic coolant cap! My wife said that if we go back to the US, we will sell it in the EU. Well, my German wife wants to move back to the US and I said, "the GT500 comes back with us," she agreed.
@@TonysFordsandMustangsbut it costs 4000 more for a built motor too. The handling difference is negligible. You can buy pre built iron blocks for 8999 and aluminum ones otherwise the same are 12999. That is almost 50% more cost for the car to be little lighter in the front if the car isnt a full out competition race car I'm not sure it's worth the extra money. You could put the iron one in the 11-12 people have I wouldn't wanna do that though if it was a factory iron block car it doesn't matter lol.
I love the video.. i completely agree.. I love my 2012 gt500 .. it’s modded nicely as well but a bit over kill . 800 plus rwhp . It sports a vmp tvs 2.65 with supporting components.. E85 tuned and ready to go ..
07-09 gt500 throttle only opens 75% from the factory when they “bumped” the power in 2010 they just let throttle open fully. Anyone with a 07-09 definitely needs a tune.
It was the intake and tune combined that made the power bump. An 07 with intake and tune will make exactly the same as a 2012 with the same mods. Alot of people don't understand this. They think since power is less starting out that they make less in the end or have less potential. They all make the same power when running the same blower and supporting mods/fuel from 07-12 and even the 13-14 doesn't make much more than the 5.4 cars when both are running the same blower and supporting mods/fuel like I said before. People see 07-10 as bad because it has an iron block. Yes it's heavier but on a street car you won't notice it much and it's far easier and cheaper to replace if you put a window through it. The aluminum ones are very expensive and hard to find. If you buy a pre built short block iron ones are 8999 and aluminum ones are 12999 that says it all. Almost 50% more cost just because of the aluminum block. To me it ain't worth it on a street car. Built iron block cars can easily do 1000+ to the tire.
To each their own. I'm not fan of the transmission gearing in those cars and I think they are priced much higher than the 11's and 12's. I like the styling of the 13 -14
Understood but they sell at a premium and the trans gearing was selected for top speed not for the driving 90% of users experience. That's why I recommend an 11 or 12
They might look better stock but if both are nicely modified I prefer the 07-09 myself. They're straight up sexy. The 13 are so overrated. They're cool but the earlier cars make more sense for the money if you're planning on modifying it.
It has more stock hp almost exclusively because of the better blower. The 5.8 aspect and slightly different cams have little to do with the overall power. You can put the same blower, pulley combo and supporting mods on a 5.4 and it'll make comparable power and little less torque but still a torque monster. The tails are the only thing i think is better about a 13 over a 2012. All the other shit like quad tips and ricer 220 mph gauges and the terrible long gearing in the Trans itself the 13s can keep that shit lol

Should have mentioned the wide bands and knock sensors on the 2011+ cars Car can add and pull timing
@@midnight347 we must be running different boost levels. How do you know the fuel is good before you run it? This feed was dead 3 months ago.
Thanks for watching Mike and thanks for sharing!
Thanks just bought a 2012

Am still young yet and am really a fan of the 2007 Shelby gt500 do you think it’s good to buy it after your first car 😄
The 69-70 Shelby Mustang kit is on my wish list...
the last true mustang muscle
13/14 best ones ever

Hope to locate a kit of one of these to build someday...
Thanks for the heads-up. One of the first items on the to do list was to replace the original battery and tires and oil change.

I didn't say you couldn't daily one. They are nice cars. They wouldn't be my first choice because the gearing in transmission and and rear were set up for high speed runs and most people don't use their car in that manner.
@@TonysFordsandMustangs I actually like the tall gearing, you aren't rowing gears all the time and it'll get 26MPG at 75 on the interstate.
@@thastinger345 There's nothing wrong with that but if I was looking at buying one now I would go with the 11-12's especially since the high HP numbers raised the prices of the 13-14 by 20%.
The 13-14 GT500 are the best
It seems that owners of said years all feel their cars are the best. Interesting
Would you recommend a kennel bell for the 07-12s, i would pass on a 13-14 there about the same price as a 15-17 hellcat and not as mod friendly.
There's no need to upgrade the from the OEM supercharger. You can modify those engines rather easily and there's only so much HP the car can transfer to the ground.
I got a 14 retains value best I think
They do well and that was the part that hurt them when recommending only one to buy. They are more $ and the transmission isn't geared for the street.
I mean they're newer so of course it's gonna hold its value little better than an older one but they also costed more when they were new. The 07 only costed like 43k without markups msrp.
2012 Ford mustang GT Premium 70K miles or a 2008 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 100K miles? Same money. Which would you go for?
With out seeing the cars condition and all things being equal I think I would go with the 2012 GT. There isn't as big a HP difference as one would think and S197 is a better chassis. That said the GT500 must be hammered on to drop the price down that much or the GT is overpriced. Best of luck.
Who cares if it's technically a bit better the 07-09 cars look WAY better in the rear. They really hosed the 10+..
Nice sir , how can I get that wine on my 2011 gt500.
I believe the whine increased after the pulley upgrade.
2007 n 2010 seems to be the ones with most issues being 1st gens
No they actually hold up well and are very reliable overall. The 07 had clutch issues but once you upgrade the clutch that doesn't matter. The 07 had a heavy lower balancer but that can easily be changed to aftermarket or a Ford 08 up gt500 one. The 07 is over 10 lbs heavier its very significant. With upgraded blowers the heavy one is more likely to break your crank snout
I love my 13 it is the last true hot rod and the last car Shelby had anything to do with
It wasn't easy picking a "one to buy" I went by price 13 and 14's are quite a bit more then 11& 12's versus performance
I think if we had an Autobahn here in the states I might sway my opinion to a 13-14
I can’t decide. 2011 with 20k miles or 2007 with 2k miles. $2k difference.
I would without a doubt get the 2011 especially if intend to drive it.
@@TonysFordsandMustangs 2011 has pulley, tune, jlt intake and headers back full exhaust. With the factory 3.73 package.
@@juscallmeric It also has an aluminum block instead of Cast Iron so it's lighter in the front.
Strange, I always thought one version of this car had a IRS.
No sir. The earlier SVT Cobra had the IRS but the Shelby didn't get it until the S550.

I'll stick with my 2010
I get it. They are nice cars. thanks for watching!
13-14 have the most stock hp and look the best....
