Congrats on 10k plus subscribers. If you can get your hands on a new Up! GTI when they're relaunched early next year would like to see how they compare to the original.
Eagle eyes sir! Yes indeed and this was discussed with Audi before driving it. The cars are stored dehumidified and away from UV so the rubber parts survive better than usual. Ultimately it has got so much grip, a slightly less than perfect tyre is actually quite a good thing as the limits are lower but considering the weight, I felt it hung on pretty well. Whether Audi have a duty of care that would suggest the tyres should be younger than 7(?) years old I've left them to have a think about.
Nice review. Owned mine for 10 years now (1-off colour too - see my channel for a video). Just to point out that black optics was actually an option for some non plus models too.
Thanks Alistair, I’ve had that mount for possible a decade, maybe longer. First fitted to a Mk2 Golf GTI 16v! Had a lot of cars with unadjustable head rests so it wasn’t used for years but I do like the nice centred POV angle it allows 👍
Great driving and review Andrew - sounds amazing and despite a few dynamic foibles it’s such a nice example of Audi searching for something special - thanks for sharing and spotlighting this gem :)
Andrew, can’t believe you got to drive one. I’ve been told that the 2020 RS6 Avant is going to be impossible to obtain. BTW, if you can shot me an email address I send you photos of the R8’s! I’ve got them both down to the lake near Austin.
I’m going to be rather jealous but go for it👍It’s Andrew at Volkswizard dot co dot UK. I can imagine North America could mop up all the new RS6 production. Driving this old one and getting 16 miles per gallon made me think USA was the place for RS6😆
Yes Dave, as well as it failing it's a bit obstructive to the fun. There's also a phase where the box is in between gears which is a little disconcerting as you are about to turn it and are what feels like coasting!
Oh I love that car... Had one of them (No 162/999) with 480 HP and the "Blue" package (like shown by you but LHD of course) myself and it was so great to drive. The sound was awsome and the speed as well. If we talk about straight and the Autobahn (Topspeed 300 Km/h on the speedo). But not that good to drive on The Ring. ;) Top review as always btw. ;)
I have owned number 91 (black/black). Where are you from and could you provide me some more details (mileage, service history, accidents, maintanance etc) of number 162 I have a detailled list of more than 150 RS6 Plus and yours is new to me ;-)
@@T5Power I thought it might have been 772/773 (so they say in Germany) cause after them there were no more carosseries to build the last few to get 999. :) If you leave your email adress I can send you some details. Maybe I still have the papers and other stuff scanned on my HDD.
Great car for the time but as you mentioned it just demonstrates how far the performance saloon has moved on - but this car played its part in moving the segment on.
Indeed Scott. Having driven the new S6 TDI pretty hard and thrown it around, the chassis on that feel so sorted, it's amazing what they can achieve with the electronics both in the dampers and the front/rear/left/right variable quattro system. Oddly enough they sound similar too (electronics once again!)
Well Goran, I've just bought a Mk5 R32 which will be sold in due course but will have to make something on it before then. Deep Blue 3 door, manual, later wheels, leather, low mileage and perfect history. I coukd do with a POV perspective for cameras so will check out chest mounts, thanks for tip. twitter.com/andrewjchapple/status/1207308223038001153?s=20
No problem@@volkswizard Just missed you at the recent R8 event, btw! To confirm the point - here's how it looks on my RS6: ua-cam.com/video/RTPYL_8KjBs/v-deo.html (excuse the bad lighting and rain on the camera lens!)
I'd not even thought about that TBH. The cars are very well looked after by a contractor that only does the heritage cars and I am sure they will give it a good clean underneath. It had a lot of wax on it too. A lot of the suspension is aluminium so while it corrodes it doesn't rust. Believe it or not Audi were pleased the car was being used and winter should be no obstacle, it's a quattro after all :)

I have a a6 Avant Same shape with the v6 diesel got it 4 years ago with a broken automatic gearbox for 100 pounds did the manual swap still going strong 😍
Remeber the film ronin.... the engine is from the s8 model which was then turbocharged. The extra 30bhp in the plus came from raising the Rev limiter 400 rpm. The gearbox couldn’t take anymore torque... you’ll notice the torque figure didn’t change from standard model. Fixed more of these than I’ve had hot dinners and owned 2. Great cars!
A great video, my favourite is the C7 RS6 with CCM brakes, they are not the most progressive and you have to learn to drive around them, but it's not that difficult and they sure do stop you when it counts..... and your wheels stay clean... :-) All the RS6 I see unless they have been badly treated really really wear well with age and miles.... a truly billet car.... as they are so solid.
petrol engines are never fruagl at 30% throttle so go for 80% and when cD is relevant.... ie on autobahn between frankfurt and dresden.... at which point i have been saving Johnny polar bear
Beautiful car. Audi brought over 10 Allroad models used by the German team for the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002 that were Sprint Blue, US models that were sold after by a dealer in Utah. They are perpetually popping up for sale in the used market here at a nice premium. Sadly all were automatics though a few have been manual swapped.
Thanks Mark. Did you think the bracket was mounted on me? Not sure if it's clear but it's attached to the headrest pins. Yes the mpg is a bit of an hindrance !
@@volkswizard Yes saw the neat headrest fixings..just looked like it was grafted onto you. Good viewpoint tho. The engine sounded lovely..slurping that superunleaded.
Yes indeed, have replied now Looks amazing, as I said my uncle has lived in Texas for decades, Houston so I have a good excuse to visit Texas more than most places 😎
Brilliant review as is your forte Andrew. Late to the party with this one. If Audi ever want to part with it, I’d be sorely interested. Make that incredibly so.
Really enjoyed this video Andrew - never knew the engine in this was fettled by Cosworth. Not a car seen very often now - same as the original RS4 - guess they are all tucked up well.
The difference David is that they are still quite affordable which can't last forever. Unfortunately RS6 ownership is a bit more of tight rope as the gearbox tends to fail at around 60k and the DRC leaks much sooner usually. RS4 still has the Cosworth engine but dodges those 2 bullets. And yet RS6 is still a lot better value - they are so much cheaper than B5 RS4 you can sort out any issues and still be many £1000s better off.
They are actually incredibly rare now. Last time I checked there were only 300 left on UK roads out of the original 1000 imported. I miss mine dearly to this day.
Hey Peter_202, yes indeed it clocked over 20k miles during filming. That's quite high for one of the Audi Heritage cars, their RS2 and B5 RS4 are still in single figures. Thanks 👍 If there is some sort of launch of the revised Up! I’d love to go, just hope it’s not just badges and lane assist 🤨
Lovely car, but are those tyres the originals? The one you showed up close appears to have a 2003 DOT code, surprised it’s not cracked/perished!

What a terrible way to spend a weekend.
I know, the things I do for UA-cam 😉
Sprint Blue was on the Audi A2 from 2003 onwards storms so well within the range of the RS6+
Good point John, weird how it didn't end up on RS models in great numbers until the B7 RS4 of 2005
