Great video covered pretty much everything . Ive owned one for 18 months now , expensive to run but an absolute beast. I have done 12k miles its cost around £5.5-6k in servicing/parts and fuel to run but thats with gearbox service, cambelt, brake pads , rear discs , tyres, refurbish intercoolers and a few other bits. another way to check the intercoolers is from the front grill near the fog light , shine a torch toward the intercooler if you have black patches on them they are leaking.
Thanks for your input - always good to get feedback from owners so much apreciated! Yes, the RS6 is one of those cars where you can just continue to spend on them. Sometimes you have to, sometimes you want to (maintenance and prevention etc). Nice tip on the intercoolers! Best #Audi S6 overview on YT. I was looking at 2001 S6 yesterday with 300K miles for $3500 and feared the cost of keeping it maintained. You validated my concern and I’m not buying it
Hey there! Glad you found the video useful :-) Don't be put off of Audi's all together - there are lots of great models to choose from, and many of the performance orientated ones are not as costly to maintain as the mighty RS6 - although that model is very much the daddy of Audi's of it's time for sure! The S6 and RS6 are not exactly the same, as I'm sure you're aware, but yes of course there are many simularities. I've owned my C5 RS6 for 1.5 years. I've had to replace a smog sensor, and I have a trans seal leak. The dealer will rake you over the coals. However, i found an independent mechanic who will do the work for 1/3 cost and has RS6 experience. Things do NOT break often, but when they do, it can be costly. Don't forget, this was nearly $100,000 car in '03
Yes, you absolutely have to accept that they are expensive cars to run. Very expensive. But in return you are getting something wonderful. The rear gearbox seal is common to drip on the C5 RS6, and this will affect most RS6's. It's an engine out job to replace the seal, so not really worthwhile. Rather have annual gearbox top ups when the car is serviced. --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome! This generation was the prettiest (to me) and more comfortable as the newer one, because of a slimmer center console... more space for the legs, better view around, steeper rear window. I miss it.
Yes, completely agree. The C5 RS6 was/is a fantastic car! Hey, there are still out there you know. You guys are great. Ive loved these cars for a long time but stayed away from them because of the maintenance. Someday I will own one and probably do a manual swap.
Thank you, we appreciate that! A manual conversion on these runs at around £20,000. At least that's how much the last one was that I know was definitely actually done rather than just priced up. I once had a C5 RS6. I got it from a lady who sadly lost her husband to cancer shortly after they had bought it. It sat in the garage for 5 years because she didn't want to get rid of anything but eventually wanted it to go to a good home. She didn't give a toss about the money because she is very wealthy but wanted it to go to a good home. I renewed the battery for her to start it up and found it had just under 3000 miles on it. It was MINT condition. She allowed me to drive it while i was trying to sell the vehicle I had at the time. In this short time period it threw up tens of error messages. The Audi dealership took it in and sadly because it had sat unused, all the oil seals had dried and perished. I just could not afford to fix the gearbox issues it had so it went to somebody else. I still think of that car as the number one car I've ever driven and if I win the lottery it's going on my list of cars to own.
I hope you get to own one before too long :-) They're not lottery-money anoymore to buy, but do cost a lot of money to kjeep maintained properly. But, what a car!

I test the intercooler in the vehicle by soaking it with water and dishwashing soap like Dawn. Then foor brake the car in gear to build a bit of boost while having someone check for bubbles. Much like you would look for a leak in a tire.

Hey there - thank you, much appreciated! Well, it's impossible to cover absolutely everything 100%, but hopefully we got there 90%+ :-) Shhh, don't tell anyone. We don't want to put more people off buying one of these beauties!!! People have asked after watching this "why on earth would I want one of these with so many potential issues?" The C5 RS6 is definitely a labour of love. If you don't absolutely love it, then it's not the car for you as they do cost a lot to keep them fit and healthy, and this is only getting harder and harder as they get older. Very, very nice and informative video. Just imagine how cool it would be if one could swap a newer 6- or 8-speed ZF gearbox inside the C5 because this powertrain has so much more potential than what is transmitted through the outdated and bottlenecking 5-speed.
Hey there - thank you, genuinely appreciated :-) Yes, a gearbox upgrade would be immense. However, also a LOT of money. We were talking to a chap a while back who had done a manual gearbox upgrade on his C5 RS6, and I'm sure it cost £20,000+ or somewhere in that region. More than the value of the car that's for sure. But, sometimes it's about proving it can be done ;-) To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there's a few things you can do: 1) Please ensure you subscribe to our UA-cam channel. 2) Please give our video's the Thumbs Up on UA-cam. 3) Please help spread the word, the more people who know about us the better!
Total Technik You definitely have my thumbs up! 20 000 is steep indeed but I agree with the idea of simply proving it can be one. There are quite a few sources on manual swapping the RS6 but surprisingly I am yet to find any info on possible automatic upgrades. Might be an unpopular opinion but I find an auto box suits the RS6 character.
Ah, the one manual vs auto debate. A tricky one as you're either one way or the other. Back in 'the olden days' auto boxes were terrible in cars. Clunky nasty things. But that's all changed now, and when you look at gearboxes fitted circa 2003 onwards in Audi's such as the Tiptronic box in the S4, they are a new breed (and have moved on a lot further again in more recent years!!!) With a touch of a flappy paddle you can change gear quicker than you could by manually pressing a clutch, moving a gearstick, releasing the clutch and applying the accelerator. If you look at top level super cars they're pretty much all tiptronic as standard these days, same as F1 cars. Ferrari, Lambo's etc have great tiptronic auto boxes. The auto boxes can just do it better these days. BUT there is a feeling of additional control with a manual box. It seems to be a case of your dad hated auto gearboxes (because yes, they were crap back then!!!) and so the new generation hates them by default as that's what their dad said. But that's all changing, and that's being seen as an outdated approach. Would a manual car beat a tiptronic being an identical make, model and spec? On the track, I would expect the auto to have the advantage, but in real life these are cars that people have to drive to work in, not race on a track. And so full circle back to the feel. Hence you're either a manual or an auto guy :-)
£20k? How did you come up with that number? I've never converted an auto to manual, but I do understand you will need clutch, flywheel, pedal cluster, hydrolic lines, slave and master cylinder, shifting linkage, all the small bits, actually mounting all the stuff and the gearbox itself and management system from an A6 or Allroad, but I don't see that coming anywhere near even 10k, even with labor if you cant do it yourself.
Yes, £20k was the figure I was given direct from a chap who had had it done. He did not do any of it himself however (I don't believe), and agree it should be able to be done for much, much less if you are able to do it all yourself. I think the parts cost a good few thousand alone as he upgraded quite a few components during the install. Crazy, crazy money!

Thats a very good buyers guide, if not the best for this car. If you are familiar with wrenching you can do the timing kit for a lot less. As for the brakes, my parts supplier says 240€ per brake disc, zimmerman parts are a lot cheaper than OEM. One more thing i would like to add. RS6 body parts cost A LOT. There are no aftermarket parts, you cant get a new 50€ bumper like you can on the A6. Fenders, bumpers, door blades, side skirts, the prices are mind boggling.

Very good informative video. It really opened my eyes regarding the running costs of an RS6..but it's an itch i want to scratch one day. I have always been a fan of the old RS6 Avant wagons and definetly want to own one one day. There's just something about them.My daily driver at the moment is a a6 c5 3.0 v6 quattro wagon . A really nice drive but i discovered a wet rear right passenger footwell. All the usual spots under the scuttle panel has been checked as is the pollen filter. The filter is actually bone dry. I was wondering since my rear washer wipes but don't squirt water if the line has somewhere popped out. The left hand side is bome dry..just the passenger footwell on the righthand side seems to be wet. I do not know which route the rear washer line run along from the boot lid.any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thank you, much appreciated. With regards to ther wet passenger footwell, this will certainly be the rear washer pipe. There is a plastic link piece in the pipe, which sometimes breaks, or more often pops off. You need to remove the trim to the side of the footwell to allow you to peel back the carpet (from the outer top corner back towards the centre of the car). Once you have access have a poke around and you'll see the pipe, and where the pipe connects via the plastic connector, and this is where is it likely popped off. Hey there! Thank you, much appreciated! Yes, we might look at doing some coverage for the B8 next year, so keep an eye open for that. We're also looking at more buyers guides in the future. It's difficult to do a general one for, say, the A4 B8 as there are several engine options, coupled with additional gearbox options. It's a bit easier when it has a specific focus, for example the RS6, where there is only one option as such. But definitely a lot more Audi content to come!!! Hey there? On an RS6? You don't need to do anything as such. Best to cap off the old DRC line ends properly to stop dirt etc getting in just in case you or the next owner ever wants to revert. But there are no 'sensors' as such for the DRC on the C5 RS6, you can remove the struts completely and put in coilovers and it should not affect anything (no lights on the dashboard etc). Yes, they can be! Well, expensive is probably the best description. But, the performance can be shocking on these, a real Ferrari theatener, at least at the time!! 3rd time I’ve watched this in the last few weeks. There’s one available with 150,000 miles but loads of history, DRC replaced (need to check on cam belt changes), previously owned by an Audi tech, so I’m told. To be sold as seen/trade sale, £8.5k. Do I sell my 2012, low mileage S3 and take a chance?
Tough one, especially as the S3 and RS6 are so different in pretty much every way. Be wary of trade sales on RS6's. It could be a genuine trade sale just due to the age of the car, or it could be a trade sale because they don't know or trust the car (or maybe even know it's bad) and don't want to see it again for further headaches. There's no easy answer on this one. That said, it's getting MUCH harder to get decent ones with any form of warranty now because of the age, and a trade sale is the same as buying via a personal sale, i.e. your rights are the same (no comebacks). Thanks for the reply. I think I’ve decided to hold off for now. It’s a bit of a gamble and probably one which I’m not financially prepared for at the moment. I’ll wait until things are on the up and get a better one. Are you available for a pre purchase check by any chance?
Sucks that my car doesn't have stacks of service records. B5 s4. But it has been Maintained by the two previous owners including myself and my uncle, better than any car that took service trips to the dealer. We often took pictures of the work being performed and we have a 4 foot box full of old parts. But no stacks of Service records like you say. I guess we decreased the value of it but hey at least it's reliable for us. Stage 3 and reliable. I've gotten to the point where I can put it in the service position faster than I can clean my house. But what I would agree on. Is running from any b5, b5.5(including a4 and Passat) that is not Enthusiast owned..buying a b5,b5.5 from somebody that didn't care, is like marrying a woman with 4 kids and 4 baby daddies on government assistance with a drug problem. Your wallet is gonna get crushed
Hey there! It does not mean you have devalued your car at all, but it will undoubtedly put some people off, which may in turn mean the car has to be a bit more competively priced. But if you have all of the invoices for all of the parts and work over the years it should not be too big of an issue for most people. Also, you can more than offset any minor devaluation with the amount you will have saved by doing all that work yourselves - thousands of dollars no doubt!! It might be worth keeping hold of that car for a little longer. Here in the UK prices are on the rise for good ones, and continuing to go up. In a few years time they cold easily be worth double what they are right now :-) --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Please ensure you subscribe to our UA-cam channel. 2) Please give our video's the Thumbs Up on UA-cam. 3) Please help spread the word, the more people who know about us the better! Yes, anything to do with the brakes gets very expensive quickly on these. From memory the Audi factory pads are nearing £300 a set for the fronts, and £80ish for the rears. You can get Apec and similar brands for around £80 for fronts, £35 for rears, so that can save some money if you are ok with non OEM pads. Discs are silly money. Zimmerman now makes discs for the C5 RS6, but they're still not cheap with fronts being circa £250 each, so you're not going to save a huge amount over OEM on those. I've heard of workarounds on the rear discs using discs from other VW models, and I've seen it done on a set I removed a while back. You have to use washers to pack the disc out to get the correct offset, so all a big dodgy IMHO as you really want that disc set 100% even between the pads, which might be hard to get 100% accurate with spacers. There again, I guess one pad side would wear quickly and so the 'pinch' would even out pretty quickly so may not be an issue, and does save quite a bit. Was it Jetta discs???
Thank you for this great info! The rears on my car are coming to its end in the near future. By the time I might replace it with custom rotors. Consider the price are just about the same with Zimmerman's.
The volkwagon phaeton rear rotors fit. They're a lot cheaper and you can get them new from the dealer as well. THe only problems is they're not drilled or slotted but they work just fine. I actually have them on my RS6.

If you think about investing around 20 k for an c5 in good condition plus around 10 k for doing all the necessary maintenance. So still half of a new Golf GTI.

Is there anything that doesn’t go wrong with this car haha, iv done 50k miles on my type R and have not spent a penny on it! I do love the rs6 but I can’t have one because of all these Unnecessary bills
Hey there! It's a fair question! These do cost a lot of money to keep fit and healthy, and are definitely a labour of love. The type R is a great little car (!!) but not quite in the league of the RS6. Remember these were 450bhp from factory in late 2002, and 520bhp is easy with a stage one remap. That's a lot of power!!! The type R is still a long way off of RS6 2002 factory spec 16 years later. And that's not knocking the R, that's just outlining how outrageous the RS6 was back in its heyday!! And still is to be fair! But yes, it's going to cost a lot to own one for sure! --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Please ensure you subscribe to our UA-cam channel. 2) Please give our video's the Thumbs Up on UA-cam. 3) Please help spread the word, the more people who know about us the better! Did you get the car? Just wondering what the realistic average MPG is on mixed town and open road driving. I've had a 340i and that did 24mpg average and found that thirsty
@@nathansmith1027 m8 I never after watching a couple of the vids I could afford the car but not the upkeep 3k for brake discs and thousands to replace 1 turbo was to much out of my reach I lost the deposit but got a 09 s4 instead had it mapped to 395,but its only £77 for a pair of brake discs
It's a fair point, and as outlined in the video there are those that want to have everything factory and so will replace with Audi DRC. The main benefit of coilovers is the price. A new set of DRC will cost not far off the retail value of the entire car these days (in the UK anyway!) so coilovers have become a more realistic option. Also, some people prefer the coilovers. They find the DRC a little soft. I've been fortunate enough to have driven literally dozens of these C5 RS6's. I've driven all the different coilover types there are, plus original DRC. I've driven lowered ones, ones with tighter and looser coilover settings. Pretty much all the options there are. Honestly, the coilovers can give an excellent ride - especially with a good set up! I have driven bone-rattlers where the settings are just to hard, and others a little soft. Like the three bears! Hey there! Thank you for you input. It's an interesting viewpoint, but may well be true if running costs or fuel costs are a consideration. But on the flip side if someone is in the market for a diesel then economy is likley to be a factor and so those people would be unlikely to even consider an RS6. The 3.0d C6 A6 is indeed an awesome car. At mid 200bhp it's not likely to worry a Ferrari unlike the RS6 at 450bhp standard, 515bhp with stage 1 remap and a lot more available for stage 2 and 3 remaps if you want to go crazy and have deep pockets. In many ways they could not be more different. They're not even the same platform (C5 vs C6) and at opposite ends of the model line-up in terms of customer base. Maybe a C6 RS6 vs C5 RS6 would be a better comparison :-) As with everything, it all depends on what you are looking for. Anyone else reading have an opinion on this?
Ouch!!! Unfortunately that's all part of the process of owning a car that can make Ferrari's twitch (at that age range at least).

Best #Audi S6 overview on YT. I was looking at 2001 S6 yesterday with 300K miles for $3500 and feared the cost of keeping it maintained. You validated my concern and I’m not buying it
Hey there! Glad you found the video useful :-)
Don't be put off of Audi's all together - there are lots of great models to choose from, and many of the performance orientated ones are not as costly to maintain as the mighty RS6 - although that model is very much the daddy of Audi's of it's time for sure!
The S6 and RS6 are not exactly the same, as I'm sure you're aware, but yes of course there are many simularities.
Thanks again!

Thank you - much appreciated! Glad you enjoyed the review. Thought we'd take a different approach to most car buyers guides, and seems popular so far. Hopefully we can do more in the future! :-)

You could still buy one now, starting to get their retro-flair going now, and will look amazing in 5-10 years, a genuine classic! :-)

More than the value of the car :-(

I hope you get to own one before too long :-)
They're not lottery-money anoymore to buy, but do cost a lot of money to kjeep maintained properly. But, what a car!
Very informative thank you. Will be looking forward to purchasing my first C5 soon!
Great stuff, thank you! Best of luck buying your new beast, hope you find a good one - they are still out there!

I test the intercooler in the vehicle by soaking it with water and dishwashing soap like Dawn. Then foor brake the car in gear to build a bit of boost while having someone check for bubbles. Much like you would look for a leak in a tire.
Super informative Vdo, well done!
Quality review just bought one so far no issues apart from a power steering leak from a hose
Excellent news! What a wonderful piece of machinery. Hope you have good trouble-free ownership and all the best!

What’s it been like so far mate. Considering purchasing one very soon as daily driver
Thanks
Great video. C5 RS6 Saloon is my daily driver. You missed the torque converter issue that plagues the early 2003 model year manufactured RS6s.
Hey there - thank you, much appreciated! Well, it's impossible to cover absolutely everything 100%, but hopefully we got there 90%+ :-)
Shhh, don't tell anyone.
But what a car!!!

Very, very nice and informative video. Just imagine how cool it would be if one could swap a newer 6- or 8-speed ZF gearbox inside the C5 because this powertrain has so much more potential than what is transmitted through the outdated and bottlenecking 5-speed.
Hey there - thank you, genuinely appreciated :-)
Yes, a gearbox upgrade would be immense. However, also a LOT of money. We were talking to a chap a while back who had done a manual gearbox upgrade on his C5 RS6, and I'm sure it cost £20,000+ or somewhere in that region. More than the value of the car that's for sure. But, sometimes it's about proving it can be done ;-)

But that's all changed now, and when you look at gearboxes fitted circa 2003 onwards in Audi's such as the Tiptronic box in the S4, they are a new breed (and have moved on a lot further again in more recent years!!!)
With a touch of a flappy paddle you can change gear quicker than you could by manually pressing a clutch, moving a gearstick, releasing the clutch and applying the accelerator.
Outstanding feedback ! Very useful video. Thanks
Thank you. Much appreciated, and glad you found it helpful :-)

Thank you - great to hear you liked and enjoyed the video :-)

Great video, but I think ill stick with my 1.9 PD C5.
I've just bought a C5 RS6 and wish I'd seen this before I bought. I got it cheap but the more I look into it, the more needs doing. I have it booked in for an Audi health check in early July so will know more then. The Cambelt was done 7 years ago but has only done 20000 miles since, do you think should I get this done?
Very helpful and great informative video. I am planning to buy one in the near future, and your video covers all of the quirks whats these beasts have..and again.. much appreciated.. thanks

Best of luck!

Excellent video! I drive an A4 b8, would appreciate your pro and con viewpoints on this particular model!

Hi
what should i do with the drc system after putting my coilovers how to delete drc?????
Hey there? Hope that helps!

Thank you from Canada eh!
I have a good gearbox for it , 55.000 km , bought it for my 2004 rs6 limousine . for sale , 1000€
Ok.
Seems to be quite a big headache this car. I still want one.. Always loved fast Audi Avants.
Cheers.
Yes, they can be! Well, expensive is probably the best description. But, the performance can be shocking on these, a real Ferrari theatener, at least at the time!! That kind of performance usually comes with a cost ;-)

Best of luck!! www.paypal.me/totaltechnik

In a few years time they cold easily be worth double what they are right now :-)

The rear brake disk is incredibly expensive IIRC...
Very helpful, I’m sure if he was to buy any of our rs6 he would offer us a 1000 bucks lol
Do you have your own workshop?
Please tell me that you have car repair garage somewhere in Ireland?
Hey there! Was it the accent that gave it away :-)
Unfortunately not, but I'm sure there must be some decent Audi specialists in Ireland. Have a Google and check the Audi forums if you get stuck.

If you think about investing around 20 k for an c5 in good condition plus around 10 k for doing all the necessary maintenance. So still half of a new Golf GTI.
Yes, that's true :-) The price of thr RS6 C5 in the UK have bottomed-out currently, so can only go up if looked after properly!

Whats the mpg fir urban drive in these cars realistically?
TBH, if you have to ask that means that fuel economy is a concern, and if that's the case then an RS6 should not be considered for one second. They are pretty hard on fuel!!!

S4 inter coolers are regular ones and NOT filled with coolant...
Hey there. The B6 and B7 intercoolers 100% DEFINITELY are coolant filled :-)
I've removed probably 40-50 of them from B6 and B7 S4's and so that's a definite :-)

I think I’ll continue looking for a golf R
Golf R are tiny in comparison and Audi s4 would be similar money and great performance
Understandable, it will certainly cost a lot less to own and run. Not really sure if it's directly comparable though!! ;-)

picking one up on monday with 90k great video but it has scared me
Did you get the car? Just wondering what the realistic average MPG is on mixed town and open road driving. I've had a 340i and that did 24mpg average and found that thirsty
@@nathansmith1027 m8 I never after watching a couple of the vids I could afford the car but not the upkeep 3k for brake discs and thousands to replace 1 turbo was to much out of my reach I lost the deposit but got a 09 s4 instead had it mapped to 395,but its only £77 for a pair of brake discs
Why would you buy an rs6 and replace the DRC. Its like buying an s class and replace the air suspension with coilsprings. Why buy it then?
All comes down to personal taste and budget of course!

2009 Audi A6 3.0 premium 6 speed auto all around better car to own cheers
Maybe a C6 RS6 vs C5 RS6 would be a better comparison :-)
As with everything, it all depends on what you are looking for.
Anyone else reading have an opinion on this?
2004 less tha one year and 6000 usd on repairs (gearbox gone) 😔
Ouch!!! Unfortunately that's all part of the process of owning a car that can make Ferrari's twitch (at that age range at least). Nothing comes cheap on these :-(

Why everyone in German have German hatchbacks they love those hatchbacks oh and beemers on German have lower fuel intakes 1.4 l beemers 1.2L bermers 1.8L beemers meanwhile in Canada USA 4.4i 4.5 3.0 3.2 2.0 4.8i
Indeed, the difference between European and USA/Canada cars is vast! Not many diesel cars around in USA/Canada (excluding trucks) compared to Europe where most are diesel. Fuel is a LOT cheaper in USA and Canada, that helps!!

Don't buy this car if u dont make good money :) I had turbos brake it costs a lot !
Yes, if an RS6 goes wrong the repair bills can be very big. But that's the trade-off of owning a 450bhp supercar unfortunately. If cheap running costs are the priority go with the 1.9 diesel :-)
