Most of Audi's petrol engines used belts rather than chains regardless of cylinder count. I've worked on many of these engines and they are surprisingly serviceable if you follow the typical strict German procedure. The front of the car is built in a very clever way where you remove the bumper cover which is very easy to do, the you undo a number of screws and swing the entire front end out in one big piece. All the hoses for cooling and wires are on one side where the 'hinge' point is, and the you can pretty much stand inside the front of the car with everything very easily accessible. On my car with a v8 TDI engine (chains not belts) everything is located between the engine and transmission, not a very fun procedure to get access to them compared to these models..
douggie i prefer that dashboard dials anytime instead of a crappy screen that looks like a cheap chinese phone .......that interior is timeless , its like a good suite, never gets old.......
Ah, back in the days when Audi’s S and RS models had genuine cast aluminum mirror housings rather than the cheap “plastic metal” caps that they’ve used for the past 5-6 years.
Over here in the UK and Europe you hardly ever saw the saloon version of this car and like today it's the estate model or what you in America call a station wagon. Which is a much more practical car. I remember when I first drove one back in 2004 after driving Ferrari's and Lambo's in my job this felt like it had the power of a super car that handled like a super car but the comfort of an armchair. It truly was the best car I had ever driven at the time. I later leased a new RS6 in 2015 but that's another story.
I live in Europe, we had an A6 1.9 TDI from 2002 and we sold it 4 years ago (not because it broke , because we wanted something new) . It had ~400k km . I almost cryed when i saw this review , so many memories (i know its not the same thing , but it was similar enough)

@@99Lezard99 Exactly, at least everything they have made in the last 20 or so years. IMO it reaches deeper than them not being high quality mechanically though, I believe they very deliberately engineer their cars to have a use-by date, with components specifically engineered to break down after a certain amount of use and time - so after say 5 years or whatever they become irritating to own, making the wealthy first-buyer simply trade it in on a new model. Engineered obsolescence is the term. I do think it's starting to catch up on them now though, more and more people are realising they are paying premium money for something that nobody wants to buy second hand, so they are losing a fortune in depreciation, and starting to consider other options. Even if you are wealthy losing $50,000 in depreciation in just 5 years of ownership doesn't feel smart.
Structure wish they are. Over engineered, but its let down buy its electronics. Yes Lexus is more reliable, but the european companies build stouter vehicles
The rear cup holders were below the front centre of the rear seat base, amd similar pop out style like the front one but a pair instead. Easily missed though.

I remember seeing this on my way back from school back in 2006. On a two-lane highway behind a long line of cars. I was about to switch right to pass in the seemingly free lane when I spotted what I thought was an S6 in my rear view way behind and approaching very fast. I thought there's no way I'd be able to get my humble Toyota Yaris fast enough to be out of its way. So I stayed. Thank goodness I did because this thing blew past at a frightening pace. I can still recall that glorious V8 burble as it went by.
For sure. The V10 TDI and RS6 aren't for everyone. Yeah, they aren't well engineered or well thought out. They are horribly impractical to fix. But it's VW! Part of their charm is they are so shitty they are good!
@@friendlyoldbum4085 I've had 2 Japanese cars give out before any VW I've ever owned has. Sure they have a handful of not well engineered models they've released through the years, but what auto maker hasn't?
I think you really should do a video on the D2 S8. It's cheap now, but in its day it was a flagship super saloon with a 50-valve V8 and Audi's most complex aluminium space frame. It had so many quirks and details about it from the solar sunroof to the steering wheel shift buttons. It was lighter than the S6 of its day despite being larger and more complex.
He saw cars get easier on maintenance thanks to fuel injection and OBD, but he's barely catching up with the newer technology and engine management getting more complicated. @@TheDarkhorse82 After a while, it's possible to make windows drop down on their own. No key or remote needed. How handy is that! I've always loved this car. Back in the day my parents leased an 04 A6 3.0, and I remember the dealer had an RS6 in stock and were showing it off in the showroom. I remember those hilariously bad cupholders well. At the time, Audi was heavily involved with racing, and while most will remember their Le Mans prototype effort with perhaps the most successful sports car racing car ever built, the R8, they also had a full factory team in what was then known as the SCCA SPEED World Challenge. Prior to the 2003 season, they had used the S4 with the 2.7 turbo engine, but 2003, they stepped it up to the RS6. I was fortunate to see the RS6 run in that class in both 03 and 04 at Laguna Seca. The 03 cars were white and basically retained the stock bodylines, but the 04 cars had much wider fenders and huge tires, which IMO ruined the look of the car a bit. The Audis always had an advantage in the standing starts of those races, too. I remember seeing the RS6s blow past people vividly at the 03. The drivers literally had to plan how they were going to pull around the RWD cars on the starts. They also generally cleaned up if the race was in the rain as the AWD was basically unbeatable. One of the drivers was Randy Pobst, who most probably know better these days from his commentary on how new cars drive on the track.

I love this car. A few years ago my local mechanic used to be run by a foreman that had gotten a mint example of one of these. This car was a big deal 16 years ago, about as crazy as a 600+hp BMW M car is now. This RS6 is such a subtle, quiet, svelte operator. Just wish I had the garage space and time to own and maintain one.
This car really brings me back. My parents had an '03 A6 2.7T and it was (mostly) an awesome car. The rounded style was absolutely beautiful back in the day (I still really like it), especially the rear without the spoiler. The interior had a clean, utilitarian-but-luxurious aesthetic and feel (I can still smell it in my mind). And the Bose stereo was the best that I'd ever heard in a car at the time. Also, having a turbo in a well-built sedan (an AWD sedan, no less), was a special treat back then. The progressive building of boost made it feel so much faster than it actually was. My parents were wise enough to unload it immediately after the bumper-to-bumper warranty expired, seeing how many times it had to go back to the dealer and how much those repairs would have cost. They switched to Cadillac after that and have had a much better experience overall, driving the V8 STS that replaced it to over 140k miles without major issue. The 2nd generation CTS-V that followed was even better (except that the rear seats were virtually unusable due to the damn sloping roof).

On my car with a v8 TDI engine (chains not belts) everything is located between the engine and transmission, not a very fun procedure to get access to them compared to these models..

thats the thing with these german luxury cars. they feel very high quality. but they arent really. at least not in the mechanical department.

My dad used to have a '98 A6, same color as yours but the 2.5 tdi version. I absolutely loved it.
