That thing is beautiful in Nogaro Blue, these are modern classics indefinitely. One of the best looking estates ever (Apart from the Alfa 159 Sportwagon). As soon as 25 years rolls around for this beaut expect it to become silly money for that smooth, silky Cosworth V8! For sure on my dream car list!

Still got my 2004 c5 Rs6 Avant in Missano red , absolutely outstanding car , originally an Audi demonstrator car hence mileage a little high now 170,000 but running well , ran well for 4 years needed the usual tyres and front brakes still on original DRC suspension, this year removed engine as had oil leak in turbo oil feed pipe so decided give engine and gearbox once over upgraded intercoolers and all rubber hoses timing belt etc so big bill first time in 5 years but well worth it , a pleasure to own and drive .

The blanking switch at the top is for the optional rear blind on the saloon, obviously not available on the Avant.

The last Audi before they where driven by yobbos. Understated design, quality (except the 2.5 TDI) and the ultimate car for blasting to your wintersport destinations. I only driven once in a RS6 C5 when I was a mechanic, I remember it well. Drove carefully because it was a customer car, but it made a huge impact on me. The Audi specialist I worked for sold it new to him. The quattro system comes to life when driving in the wet and slippery conditions! Then you feel the difference between a FWD or RWD.

I own a A6 2.5TDI* (180PS) Avant Quattro Tiptronic of the same generation and I think you did a great job giving viewers a feel for those cars.
The normal version is obviously even more "relaxed" than the S/RS, even more so on 16" but it still feels solid and gives proper feedback rather than just being soft.
IMO it's one of the cars where you had the right mix of modern technology (especially the Bi-Xenon lights were a great upgrade over the old Halogen) without having the car hiding anything or deciding for you.
The missing button is most likely for the electric tailgate roller blind, which was rarely specced since people usually went for tinted windows instead.
*they have a bad reputation since the early models had camshaft issues, but it's kinda overstated and many of the early models have managed well over 400k kilometers. As far as recommendations go, I'd recommend going for the 1.9TDI over it, simply because it's cheaper to maintain and you wouldn't notice the power difference in most cases.

I could feel what you were feeling as you described how it felt heavy and planted. Didn't really here the engine until you sunk the shoe on the road. The track video looked and sounded awesome. Rock solid at 100 mph. Bet it felt as planted in the rain as well. Interior shames BMW I'm afraid.

Absolutely loved this, thanks for doing a great goes for a drive. Wasn't aware of the RS6+, but an absolute minter of an example you had there. I love fast wagons, and this was the era, when Audis were a bit more understated. Everyone seemed to be driving BMWs, it feels now a lot of those BMW drivers have gone to Audi.

Much nicer interior than current Audi cars. These modern touch screens (a) won't work in about 20 years like 20 year old interiors still work now and (b) will age the interior drastically. Nice vid

Conceptually these were such a desirable car but it's biggest achilles heel was the 4.2 with it's notorious timing chain stretch and associated chain tensioner. Historically you would get 80,000 miles-ish, if you were lucky, and did regular oil changes. Then the cam chain would start to rattle at start up and it was all downhill from there. And unfortunately Audi in all it's wisdom put the cam chain in the rear of the engine making it a very expensive undertaking to replace the chain and tensioner.

    • @SBBUK
      @SBBUK 3 роки тому +2

You're thinking about the later engines, it's a belt on these. The engine itself is actually very strong and the cam belt system is just a maintenace item. As others have mentioned however, there are other weak points (gearbox, especially when not serviced properly as per ZF's recommendations.. which audi decided to ignore when the car was new..) and the DRC suspension shocks.

I recognise the northbound A24 past Southwater and Horsham there, then on through BBH and Five Oaks etc ;-) Beautiful car,......I have a 2003 RS6 Avant (MRX Stage 2+). Sadly having to break it at the moment, since the gearbox inevitably let go a few years back. Sounded like thunder when it was on the road, with Milltek exhausts and sports cats.

A heartfelt 'amen' on the putdown of touch-screens. It took decades for car makers to get the ergonomics of a dashboard right, then they were overcome by button-mania, and now give us - without the option - the distraction of screens. Selecting a phone number is barely more dangerous.

The way it drops the revs every time you let off the throttle, then locks the torque converter back up again before deciding to change down for a bit, then change up, loosen off the t/c and drop the revs down to idle again. Imagine a driver behaving like that with a manual; I can't...

It must be me but I do not get it. What is the attraction of a ‘sports’ car that is very fast in a straight line, but far too heavy to corner in a nice fashion. It’s a bit like a Tesla. Personally I believe there is little challenge in driving fast on a motorway. Driving fast on a winding road is a challenge. And that is much more fun (if it has to be a car with some practicality) in a 2002 tii, a Giulia of the same era or a Lotus Cortina. It is not about power, it is about weight. Or better the lack of it. Sorry, to me these cars are poser’s cars, no real driver’s cars.

An RS6 is not a posers car lol, especially when it’s a C5, basically the last “proper Audi” , the last ever produced by Quattro GMBH and tuned by Cosworth before they where bought over. Poser cars are the modern cars now, I see modern A3s that look 10x more “sporty” sitting next to my RS6, only they have about a 1/5 of the power I have. Not everyone wants to be a rally driver everyday of the week, I also have a 2.8 swapped manual e30 and that is about as raw and analogue as you get, but I still enjoy the big cruiser for long journeys and shooting past everyone with that V8 noise. Different cars serve different purposes.
