This is my all time favorite performance of my all time favorite song. This song contains what is, to me, the greatest line ever written in a rock song: "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star In somebody else's sky, but why can't it be mine?" Still brings me to tears nearly 30 years after I first saw this performance.
“He is not a happy man right now…” Honey, that completely sums up this performance!! As others have said in the other comments, Eddie Vedder (lead singer/songwriter) did not want this song to become a “Single”…and never was. However, the song being as powerful and as soul tapping as it is…it just drew people into it. It couldn’t be ignored. It took off without ever being “officially released”, so it became a staple at their concerts. So, imagine, if you will…having to perform this extremely personal, gut wrenching song night after night. Maybe doing so was cathartic for him? Who knows?
That's what music is supposed to do. It doesn't have to be released to the buying public as a single to draw people into it. A connection made is a connection made, and emotional honesty and integrity makes a much stronger connection than a beat and a hook. A beat can be replicated. The emotion is unique to the song, the writer.
“Now my bitter hands cradle broken glass of what was everything”….You’ll never hear a voice like Eddie’s. Grunge started to gain major traction when I was in high school. I love every bit of it. His performance on unplugged is so beautifully raw. Love it!
I loved it when you said “he’s going to ruin his voice” really made me smile. I imagine you’ve subsequently go on to know him, the band and the fact that Eddie Vedder still has his voice and can replicate the same vocals 31 years later. Hence how the band has been inducted into the hall of fame. Peace love and the best of goodwill to everyone.
From looking at your page, you are just starting out on a musical journey that some of us were fortunate enough to have taken in real time. Welcome aboard, it's going to be a great ride!
Now I'm going to cry again. eddie vedder had a cold singing this song. But being the professional he is he pulled it off. You should check out ""temple of the dog"" hunger strike"" with eddie vedder iand the late great Chris Cornell..DOUBLE AMAZING 2 of the greats singers of the 90s without a doubt.
LOL. I had this imaginary conversation pop into my head when I read that. "Eddie! Your voice was amazing tonight! How'd you do it?" "Too much snot in my nose."
I think i sound better when i sing with a cold, makes my voice a lil deeper and the flem in my throat almost makes me sound more emotional. i can also do a better batman impression with a cold lmao

These stupid comments appear under so many live videos it's borderline retarded. Like it's a race to post the excuse. Congrats, now let's see how many other morons posted this too!
Vedder is one of the greatest singers and lyrical geniuses ever. He just brings such an unbelievable grit and feels to everything he writes. It's absolutely beautiful.
when you want to introduce someone to Pearl Jam, this is the song and the video you show them. one of the 5 greatest unplugged performances ever put on tv nevermind MTV's unplugged series.
Sheets of empty canvas Untouched sheets of clay Were laid spread out before me As her body once did All five horizons Revolved around her soul As the earth to the sun Now the air I tasted and breathed Has taken a turn Oh and all I taught her was everything Oh I know she gave me all that she wore And now my bitter hands Chafe beneath the clouds Of what was everything Oh the pictures have All been washed in black Tattooed everything I take a walk outside I'm surrounded by Some kids at play I can feel their laughter So why do I sear Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin Round my head I'm spinning Oh, I'm spinning How quick the sun can, drop away And now my bitter hands Cradle broken glass Of what was everything All the pictures have All been washed in black Tattooed everything All the love gone bad Turned my world to black Tattooed all I see All that I am All that I'll be, yeah Uh huh, uh huh, oh I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star In somebody else's sky But why Why Why can't it be Oh can't it be mine
PJ are the real deal. Vedder's growling, gravelly voice is full of gravitas & unlike that of the typical rocker. Besides his wild mane, I dig that sedated mental patient act of his. It makes his vocal delivery all the more intense. Cool band. Cool reaction.
It's crazy how that MTV Unplugged series managed to take some of the greatest rock bands and capture some of their greatest performances in a crazy short amount of time. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains...and every single one of their sets is incredible. And when you read the stories of the behind the scenes in getting them all their and getting it all to work, it's amazing that they all turned out as good as they did. Wasn't no youtube back in the day either so seeing them in this kind of setting was basically impossible. Wish there was more band performances going back way further in time. Fortunate to be able to capture these at least.
"I know some day your have a beautiful life, I know you'll be the sun in some else's sky, but why cant it me mine' The original release was my fav version.
Yeah, a star is something distant and cold and one of millions. The sun is warm and life supporting and all life revolves around it. Star doesn't make sense.
@@kylegarvin1451 hate to break it to you, but stars are actually suns. So basically it's interchangeable. Also, I feel like star is a bit more organic as it's describing something that is now so far out of reach it is like it's a distant star in the cosmos. Sun makes sense, though, too as a lyric. Just depends on how you see life and relationships, I suppose.
@@kylegarvin1451 the sun is a star. All those stars you're looking at in the night sky, those are basically suns in different periods of their life-cycle and their light shines all the way to Earth. And if someone was all the way out there looking at our sun, it would look like a tiny bright dot in the sky to them just like the stars you see.
This is Eddie at his most perfect and beautiful--voice, face, hair, manner, everything. The way the song builds to the climactic "We belong together" draws you in, and when it's over, you're emotionally spent. Eddie is such a talented songwriter; the songs are like poetry, and some lines are just so profound. (I think the drums were too loud, but maybe that's just me 🙂)
"I know some day you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star, in somebody else's sky, but why, why, whyyyyyy can't it be mine?" Still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, even after almost 30 years.
Grunge had the coolest vocalists. Layne Staley of Alice in Chains is another one. All the Grunge singers were pretty amazing when they got into their gravel!
Watching you watch this is how I felt hearing it 30 years ago, and still feel it the same way as back then. The passion, depth, raw, real, haunting, soul forming music they created then AND throughout the past 3 decades has elevated my entire being and define everything I feel to such a high level that no one or no thing could even compare to achieving for me.
It always warm my grungy little 90s soul to see someone discover Eddie Vedder’s voice. There were many great grunge bands in the 90s, but few can touch Eddie. Layne and Chris come close, but Eddie is King! Ten, the album that most of the unplugged tracks originated from, is perfection. Start to finish, track for track utter brilliance! New subbie here! Greetings from Texas.
Pear jam's (Black) is one of my all time favorite songs his dedication always brings me to tears and the lyrics always remind me of a lost love emotion
This performance is one of Eddie Vedder's greatest and unfortunately you can just feel the pain come through. Not just in his voice but his body language. That moment at 2:17-2:38 as he gets deeper into his emotions he's first holding the mic with both hand, then one hand slips to his lap, then both to his lap cradling his stomach. Usually the body language of someone trying to protect themselves. Again at 4:45 his arm slowly creeps from his side to crossing over. If his voice didn't scream it enough those couple things show how real it is for him in this moment.
Agreed. At first, i preferred the studio version (mainly because he days the right lyrics and and when he does "the thing" towards the end the vocal effects get intense as his voice does). The live performance, love the sutle improvs like: 🎵As thee earth to the su-hun, yeah🎵 And that woowhoo thing during the "kids at play" part. 4:41 He puts his right hand on his left wrist as he's getting ready to say: 🎵All the pictures had, all been washed in black🎵 And that posture is the basis for portraits One of the only songs i can thing of that's made me cry. 2 weeks ago, i listened to this on repeat for a week straight. Just listened to it earlier got a lil blurry eyed
Eddie Vedder (singer) is the real deal. He also does a great job when he guested with Temple of the Dog and, the late-great Chris Cornell on ‘Hunger Strike’. Also check out Chris Cornell on ‘Nothing Compares 2U’ or in Audioslave’s ‘Like a Stone’. Emotional singing at its finest!
One of my top 5 favorite songs. The section at the end “I know someday you will have a beautiful life…” captures my heartbreak in words far better than I could’ve ever written it. Literally every time I listen to this song I think about that certain girl and I get ready eyed. That’s a mark of a great song for me personally.
You are a beautiful soul! I always feel like I’m watching this stuff again for the first time when I see folks hear this and have the same reactions to awesome 90’s grunge rock and alt.
Before I knew the name of it, I use to call this "The loneliest song in the world song". I still cannot listen to it without feeling completely and utterly alone. It's lovely and depressing at the same time.
He absolutely feels his music every time he sings. Check out a sound check they did before a concert and you'll see he puts everything into the songs every time he sings.
I love that you said that he was "in his feels". For those of us that lived at the time Eddie Vedder released this music, we saw probably heard the most intensity out of one singer than anyone has done. I know that was typical of grunge, but none better than Eddie Vedder. Such power in his lyrics and sound. Intense emotions!
This is a fantastic band, thanks for reacting! Love that part in the Pearl Jam song "Even Flow" where he sings "free zen, restless hen armadillo made a conch reef", it really speaks to me...😁
I've known and loved this song for almost 30 years and it gets me. every. single. time. Love and loss are universal themes in songwriting, but when I listen to this song, I don't just hear what he's saying, I feel it. I love that you could feel it too, because I've played Pearl Jam for people over the years and while I've converted some of them, some shrug it off and just don't "get it." I think it's awesome that you do.
Thank you for a wonderful reaction. I've always loved this song. Of course, the song is about a love lost, but 2 years ago, I lost my wife to an illness, and now the song hits me totally differently. It just slays me every time I hear it, especially the live versions. Bright blessings to you, and be well.
Every single time I listen to that I feel chills down my spine and feel like crying no matter how happy I am. I guess that's the emotion he puts into his singing
Eddie Vedder has one of those voices that is instantly recognisable. I'd be surprised if you didn't recognise his voice a little. Pearl Jam were one of the big names of the grunge movement in the 1990s, but they sustained their work and popularity well into the 2000s. Although their work rate has slowed down over the years, they are still working, and still popular. Their music and subject matter has always been quite evocative, with many songs about social or political matters, personal songs like this. Where Rage Against The Machine made you want to Rage. Pearl Jam made you think and empathise.

This is my all time favorite performance of my all time favorite song. This song contains what is, to me, the greatest line ever written in a rock song: "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky, but why can't it be mine?" Still brings me to tears nearly 30 years after I first saw this performance.
All these years later and it still gives me the chills.
“He is not a happy man right now…”
Honey, that completely sums up this performance!!
Who knows?

Sorry. Fixed it.
That's what music is supposed to do. It doesn't have to be released to the buying public as a single to draw people into it. A connection made is a connection made, and emotional honesty and integrity makes a much stronger connection than a beat and a hook. A beat can be replicated. The emotion is unique to the song, the writer.
That’s what happened with Radiohead’s Creep, Thom Yorke end up hating it.
“Now my bitter hands cradle broken glass of what was everything”….You’ll never hear a voice like Eddie’s. Grunge started to gain major traction when I was in high school. I love every bit of it. His performance on unplugged is so beautifully raw. Love it!
Im balling 😥😢😭😭
I loved it when you said “he’s going to ruin his voice” really made me smile. I imagine you’ve subsequently go on to know him, the band and the fact that Eddie Vedder still has his voice and can replicate the same vocals 31 years later. Hence how the band has been inducted into the hall of fame. Peace love and the best of goodwill to everyone.
From looking at your page, you are just starting out on a musical journey that some of us were fortunate enough to have taken in real time. Welcome aboard, it's going to be a great ride!
“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life I know you’ll be a star in someone else’s sky”. That line gets me every single time I hear this song.
His voice, his hair, his face,,, all so beautiful.
Eddie got so many of us through the 90s. The story behind the song is also beautiful
He put his heart and soul into this performance. Epic.
This woman has a beautiful smile. Hard to concentrate on anything else.
I totally agree, she was the star!!❤
Her eyes got me.
i came here to say the same thing
No make up. I would gladly present her to my anti-RaceMixing parents.
She is beautiful
@@vondoodle4325 lol..
Oh god here comes the internet rumor machine about some artist or bands most popular song but they were sick excuse that they didn't need. As if these ppl aren't worshiped enough some of you feel the need to give excuses just in case someone doesn't live them as much as you.
These stupid comments appear under so many live videos it's borderline retarded. Like it's a race to post the excuse. Congrats, now let's see how many other morons posted this too!
It was just a rumor he had a cold he later said it wasn't true. Either way who would give a shit if he had a cold or not?
THis lady's light, energy and smile are infectious!
Vedder is one of the greatest singers and lyrical geniuses ever. He just brings such an unbelievable grit and feels to everything he writes. It's absolutely beautiful.
It is inevitable that your eyes will be teary when you listen to "Black"..
when you want to introduce someone to Pearl Jam, this is the song and the video you show them. one of the 5 greatest unplugged performances ever put on tv nevermind MTV's unplugged series.
Sheets of empty canvas
Untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me
As her body once did
All five horizons
Revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed
Has taken a turn
Oh and all I taught her was everything
Oh I know she gave me all that she wore
And now my bitter hands
Chafe beneath the clouds
Of what was everything
Oh the pictures have
All been washed in black
Tattooed everything
I take a walk outside
I'm surrounded by
Some kids at play
I can feel their laughter
So why do I sear
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin
Round my head
I'm spinning
Oh, I'm spinning
How quick the sun can, drop away
And now my bitter hands
Cradle broken glass
Of what was everything
All the pictures have
All been washed in black
Tattooed everything
All the love gone bad
Turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see
All that I am
All that I'll be, yeah
Uh huh, uh huh, oh
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky
But why
Why
Why can't it be
Oh can't it be mine
I think we all have had that one person in our lives that we felt like that. I’m 63 and can still relate 😓
Last part...
WE...WE
BELONG...
TOGETHER, TOGETHER!!
WE...WE
BELONG...
TOGETHER, TOGETHER!!
that hurts. 😣😣😣😣
As many times as I've heard this song, seeing it written really adds to the power of the song. You can literally see what he's feeling.
PJ are the real deal. Vedder's growling, gravelly voice is full of gravitas & unlike that of the typical rocker. Besides his wild mane, I dig that sedated mental patient act of his. It makes his vocal delivery all the more intense. Cool band. Cool reaction.
This was just one of those "once in a lifetime" performances.....all that got to see it are better for it. Simply amazing!
As a lifelong PJ fan, watching someone unfamiliar watching for the first time is SUCH A TREAT. Eddie Vedder is my hero💙
His voice is unforgettably unique. You've heard him before.
This makes me cry every time. He was singing to someone
We all have that someone
"I know some day your have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be the sun in some else's sky,
but why cant it me mine'
The original release was my fav version.
Absolutely one of the most uniquely beautiful singers of all time!
Eddy and his sexy self here. The emotion this beautiful man can emote is just captivating to the eyes & ears. One of his best performances here.
The raw emotion of this performance always gives me chills
One of the few acoustic songs that are better than the studio version, so emotional and so good
Heard it a thousand times and it still takes breath away and brings me to tears - pure emotions in his voice! What a gift
One of the great voices of the 90's always a pleasure to hear him sing
This is Eddie at his most perfect and beautiful--voice, face, hair, manner, everything. The way the song builds to the climactic "We belong together" draws you in, and when it's over, you're emotionally spent. Eddie is such a talented songwriter; the songs are like poetry, and some lines are just so profound. (I think the drums were too loud, but maybe that's just me 🙂)
He was really sick during this performance. Still killed it!
"I know some day you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star, in somebody else's sky, but why, why, whyyyyyy can't it be mine?" Still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, even after almost 30 years.
Man Eddie can tell a story with his words and facial expressions like nobody else.
Vedder my guru, my muse and the voice that has steered me through all the emotional ups and downs life can throw at you.. Gorg
This song gives me the shivers. It's impossible not to feel this song.
Great to meet you Rogue. You're beautiful and refreshing.
Yes, him and Chris Cornell’s voices are amazing.
Grunge had the coolest vocalists. Layne Staley of Alice in Chains is another one. All the Grunge singers were pretty amazing when they got into their gravel!
Chris and Eddie's voices are amazing but no one will ever top Layne.
Scott weiland 🖤✌🤙👍🤘
We were blessed with 4 not just two layne and Kurt.
Eddie ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💯💯💯
Jeremy by these guys is life-changing the official video is a must .....bring tissues be prepared for the un expected
This 100%
Agreed
By far my favorite Pearl Jam song. There is no pain greater, a wound that never heals completely......
Eddie was a wild man in their concerts. pull up Pearl Jam pink pop 1992 to see him.
One of the most powerful voices ever!
Another good one is “Nutshell” by Alice In Chains, unplugged
Im new here, did she do
Alice In Chains - Would? yet?
No, not at all. The studio version is really good.
I would say do the live "Rooster" performance from Nothing Safe
ua-cam.com/video/-YomZuuIWKU/v-deo.html
Eddie is superb. This song gives me so much goosebumps. He is indescribable at what he does.
Pear jam's (Black) is one of my all time favorite songs his dedication always brings me to tears and the lyrics always remind me of a lost love emotion
Ditto
The live performance, love the sutle improvs like:
🎵As thee earth to the su-hun, yeah🎵
And that woowhoo thing during the "kids at play" part.
4:41
He puts his right hand on his left wrist as he's getting ready to say:
🎵All the pictures had, all been washed in black🎵
And that posture is the basis for portraits
One of the only songs i can thing of that's made me cry.
2 weeks ago, i listened to this on repeat for a week straight.
Just listened to it earlier got a lil blurry eyed
They are great. I love their "do the evolution"
Todd McFarlane did such an amazing job with the video too!
I’m 12 hours late. Couldn’t agree more with every word. ✌️🤘
Like a stone is awesome. Like a pagan I would pray.
I'm SO thankful we still have Eddie Vedder..❤!!! The work (generally collaborations) is still as beautiful and important as this song in this setting.
At always amazes at someone listening to a song I've heard at least a quarter of a million times for the first time
The entire unplugged show Is flawless. 💚LE G E N D S💚
The calm and mild bars sung at one moment and then an explosive chorus the next. That's what these grunge bands were known for!
Love that part in the Pearl Jam song "Even Flow" where he sings "free zen, restless hen armadillo made a conch reef", it really speaks to me...😁
Thanks for the love. Yeah, you got to do that one next please.
Portishead had amazing mtv unplugged session :D
What's great about singer's like him is that their voices are like finger prints no one sound like him just one of a kind
Every single song on their "Ten" album is a solid winner!
1990’s band? Current band. Eddie still sings from his toes… every show ❤️
The most intense and emotional vocal performance I know. Love it! ❤️
Eddie Vedder is great in ANY era. All he needs is a microphone, instruments, and that's it. No gimmicks, no light shows, no autotune, just passion.
One of the greatest live performances ever. Facts
Thank you for a wonderful reaction. I've always loved this song. Of course, the song is about a love lost, but 2 years ago, I lost my wife to an illness, and now the song hits me totally differently. It just slays me every time I hear it, especially the live versions. Bright blessings to you, and be well.
Everything from this unplugged show was AMAZING!! dig into it
Every single time I listen to that I feel chills down my spine and feel like crying no matter how happy I am. I guess that's the emotion he puts into his singing
" Mournfully beautiful " .... I've never heard a better description of this song !!
The album Ten is a wonderful album from beginning to end. Their talent is cemented in that very start.
They do a lot of charity work as well.
This song always gives me goosebumps. Love Pearl Jam 🤘🤘
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star, in somebody else's sky. That hits hard
I can never hear this song without tearing up or crying. The pain and beauty in his voice is impossible not to feel in your soul.
