This song is a great example of what made Grunge so special. The best bands were expressing raw emotion, which had been missing from much of the corporate crap of the late 80s that immediately preceded Grunge.
Grunge unplugged is like rock meets country and cranks it up to 11 as if it's a concert on the last day before the asteroid takes us all out. It's the best of all worlds. You don't get to hear rock get that vulnerable or country get that raw but in grunge unplugged they do. Guys like Tyler Childers sounds like that. I felt like that's where Kurt would have been heading.
@@lasey.baggins-cupitt8754 I am also relieved he didn’t go to Walgreens and get some cough drops for the cold he had that night! This concert wouldn’t have sounded half as good.
It absolutely brings tears to my eyes to see people fascinated by this incredible song after so many years. For those of us who lived it live, it was magical. More than magical even.

Eddie and Chris Cornell for me have voices that just open different portals in the universe. Unbelievably powerful but gentle at the same time. Perfect tone and pitch in telling a story, and the melody brings the emotions out the person listening.
What I love most about Vedder's voice is the way he communicates not just emotion but a vulnerability. He always feels like he's confiding in us, with his sudden highness sounding almost like a moment of being overwhelmed by what he's feeling. It's such an intimate experience.

It still makes me sad that those days are behind us 😢 The soundtrack to my life through the grunge glory days! Black is the most raw, emotional and stunning track ever ❤
Eddie said Black is about something he really felt and still feels every time he sings it. That’s why it’s so moving. That’s the quality that a singer who’s technically good can never have if they’re not feeling what they’re singing. I’m heartbroken with him hearing this song. His voice sounds heartbroken and defeated

This is Gen X music, and I appreciate the fact that you appreciate it because it meant a lot to us at the time. The process you go through here trying to figure out what exactly Eddie is saying is what every single Gen X'er in college tried to figure out at the time. What exactly are the lyrics? Once you know what they are, you never forget them and the song means that much more to you and you never understand how you didnt recognize it initially. This song, and more specifically this performance made Eddie a legend.
It's also older millennial music. This is what we grew up listening to as we grew up. Sure, I was only 5 when this came out so I didn't understand it but it was the *sounds* I grew up on.
I was one year old when they released their first album, even though, I knew who they were during my teenage years, and my parents never listened to them, my parents were more into 60's to 80's songs. I can't believe it either that's still people who don't know Pearl Jam. And I'm Brazilian!
It still means a lot to us. It's so cutting every time we lose one of these people who meant so much. I was 18 when this came out. It was a real shock to me when kurt died, then as they continued to fall, from Michael hutchence, Shannon hoon, Layne, Scott, prince, Tom petty, Chris, Chester, even sinead, it's a real killer, knife in the heart. We have Billy Corgan, Eddie Vedder and Billy from Green day ... what the he'll? Robert plant mick jagger and Paul McCartney are here but our generations heroes are clocking out.
I know. EVERY time. I still get goosebumps and yes, sometimes cry, when I hear the the passion and pain from these earlier songs. I think their new album is going to be kick ass. Can’t wait‼️

I can't imagine not knowing the music of Pearl Jam. The 90s certainly was a special time to be alive. One of the greatest concerts I have ever been to.
I can imagine it if you are completely not interested in music at all... I don't understand why this woman are making videos about artists she knows nothing about and clearly has no interest in... Like WHO is this analysis for? There are millions of people who have analysed PJ with lots more knowledge, insights and personality than her... its just arrogant to believe people are interested in watching what she has to say . So Gen-Z... to bring absolutely nothing of substance to the table, just your opinions and feelings and then make the whole world listen to it.. the most meaningless generation of all time... no contribution whatsoever...
The analysis is for choral people like myself. A Gen X woman who enjoys watching someone analyze the voice from a musically educated standpoint of one of my favorite singers.
Ahhh, back when MTV was good!!! The unplugged series was one of the best programs they had on air. Saw them back in the 91 when 10 came out. It was a killer concert. Eddie has a very unique and distinct voice. The 80s and 90s were an awesome time to be alive.

This was such a cool video, not for just because I love Pearl Jam but because your reaction was so pure, genuine and down right cool! I could watch you watch Eddie and react for ages. Thank you for sharing such a cool video. I think I will appreciate the band even more now 😁
Emotion...just raw emotion wrapped in memories screamed through a throat wracked by pain. It's beautiful. It's painful. It's a wound we can't quit touching.
Vulnerable, that's exactly it. Eddie lays it all out there, and you can see his bandmates look at him with care and sometimes even concern, because he was so raw and exposed, and they knew it was emotionally exhausting to go that deep and to lay there stripped bare for all to see his pain... We all felt it.
I’ve been to hundreds of Pearl Jam concerts from the mid 90s to today. Member of the 10 club, but what I love most about this song is, every time it’s played live when the best and most depressing verse is sang that 40,000 people belt it out and all 40,000 voices all have a different story and meaning behind what those lyrics meant
“And now my bitter hands Cradle broken glass…” Until I heard this song, I’d never had the words to describe the heartbreak of a relationship smashed to pieces. Thanks, Eddie! ❤❤❤
This time in rock and roll was so special because it disrupted mainstream music. Mainstream shifted from misogynistic party rock and campy love ballads thrown up by the over commercialized glam metal bands to this introspective, human examination and emotional struggle offered up by bands like Pearl Jam. And all of those unfamiliar nuances of a voice like Eddie's is an expression of the introspective emotional struggle that we all have tucked away. I think that's why we were swept away by it, we all can relate in some way. I love your discovery of this. Brilliant reaction.

I was in high school in the early 90s and I clearly remember and feel the dawn of grunge and coming into the scene via MTV. I grew up in a small Texas town and I was blown away by grunge, immediately fell in love. Singers like Eddie Vedder, Layne Staley/Jerry Cantrell, Chris Cornell, and other greats changed my life. Grunge takes me to another place, another time and I don’t want to come back to the now. Those of us who are a part of GenX and loved this genre will always, ALWAYS turn to this music. Sure did. She fell in love.

I'm falling in love with her falling in love with Eddie and his voice.
Over 30 years and thousands of listens to this version of Black, I still get full body goosebumps immediately, just like my first listen when it aired in 92. Man, this song frigging guts. I'm so happy and honestly proud, to hear a person of her generation really appreciate this beautiful example of what we were lucky to have back then. Thank you.

Right. I just sit and stare, then smile, then bite my lip, then I’m watching her.. he literally puts women in a trance immediately 😅😅😅

Yes! Well observed!
I'm so relieved Eddy Vedder never went to a vocal coach... Imagine the loss.

I am also relieved he didn’t go to Walgreens and get some cough drops for the cold he had that night! This concert wouldn’t have sounded half as good.

It absolutely brings tears to my eyes to see people fascinated by this incredible song after so many years. For those of us who lived it live, it was magical. More than magical even.
I was born in 2004, I'm 19. I LOVE pearl jam, and want you to know all my friends do too, we have our whole lives. My generation is mostly tasteless and ignorant when it comes to music, but it's not as much as you think.

Eddie and Chris Cornell for me have voices that just open different portals in the universe. Unbelievably powerful but gentle at the same time. Perfect tone and pitch in telling a story, and the melody brings the emotions out the person listening.
Chris Cornell’s voice will always immediately connect to my heart. RIP, Chris Cornell. 💔
Absolutely! Surely you are also moved by Layne Staley of Alice in Chains?💔

Eddie, Layne, and Chris- three of the top 5 rock singers in history. Hands down!
What I love most about Vedder's voice is the way he communicates not just emotion but a vulnerability. He always feels like he's confiding in us, with his sudden highness sounding almost like a moment of being overwhelmed by what he's feeling. It's such an intimate experience.

It's funny to see a young person watching it for the first time, cause Pearl Jam is kind a religion to me. I wish I could go back in time to have this feeling of listening to them for the first time too!

They were my dad’s favourite of all time too. They were the first band I saw live (when I was 10) with him and we saw them again years later together. We played Just Breathe at his funeral in July.

20:35 and that’s why 90’s grunge will always be unmatched. It was truly the best era.

❤ at the same time I feel like 😢

“And now my bitter hands
Cradle broken glass…”
Until I heard this song, I’d never had the words to describe the heartbreak of a relationship smashed to pieces.
