I was so deeply entrenched in the 90s. It is still completely unbelievable to me, that there are adults walking among us who have never heard of Pearl Jam.
Kinda makes you feel sorry for people
Huh? Lol
@@jay606 Yes. Totally. It also makes me wonder what all I missed from the 70s even though I feel pretty well-versed in it.

They were my dad’s favourite of all time too. They were the first band I saw live (when I was 10) with him and we saw them again years later together. We played Just Breathe at his funeral in July.

You need to listen to more Eddie. He sang with so much heart. Beautiful voice and powerful. It pulls you in and makes you feel!
It’s a travesty you haven’t heard Eddie before but it’s never too late to spend the next 30 years loving his body of work🖤🙌🏻
Eddie said Black is about something he really felt and still feels every time he sings it. That’s why it’s so moving. That’s the quality that a singer who’s technically good can never have if they’re not feeling what they’re singing. I’m heartbroken with him hearing this song. His voice sounds heartbroken and defeated
What I love most about Vedder's voice is the way he communicates not just emotion but a vulnerability. He always feels like he's confiding in us, with his sudden highness sounding almost like a moment of being overwhelmed by what he's feeling. It's such an intimate experience.

Yes, I feel the same ^^
I lost count of how many times I had to buy a new copy of ten...Just played them till they wore out.
Huge impact on many lives.
This song is a great example of what made Grunge so special. The best bands were expressing raw emotion, which had been missing from much of the corporate crap of the late 80s that immediately preceded Grunge.
Grunge unplugged is like rock meets country and cranks it up to 11 as if it's a concert on the last day before the asteroid takes us all out. It's the best of all worlds. You don't get to hear rock get that vulnerable or country get that raw but in grunge unplugged they do. Guys like Tyler Childers sounds like that. I felt like that's where Kurt would have been heading.
Yes! Well observed!
I'm so relieved Eddy Vedder never went to a vocal coach... Imagine the loss.

There have been two generations since Pearl Jam. To young people today, Pearl Jam is like Buddy Holly was to us, in the 90's; many of them just aren't going to be aware of old bands.

I can't imagine not knowing the music of Pearl Jam. The 90s certainly was a special time to be alive. One of the greatest concerts I have ever been to.
I can imagine it if you are completely not interested in music at all... I don't understand why this woman are making videos about artists she knows nothing about and clearly has no interest in... Like WHO is this analysis for? There are millions of people who have analysed PJ with lots more knowledge, insights and personality than her... its just arrogant to believe people are interested in watching what she has to say . So Gen-Z... to bring absolutely nothing of substance to the table, just your opinions and feelings and then make the whole world listen to it.. the most meaningless generation of all time... no contribution whatsoever...
The analysis is for choral people like myself. A Gen X woman who enjoys watching someone analyze the voice from a musically educated standpoint of one of my favorite singers.
Seen em twice in Sydney. Unbelievable.

You can hear his emotions, that's what you get when you listen to Eddie Vedder. You hear the pain, the rawness. It's beautiful.
I know. EVERY time. I still get goosebumps and yes, sometimes cry, when I hear the the passion and pain from these earlier songs. I think their new album is going to be kick ass. Can’t wait‼️
This is Gen X music, and I appreciate the fact that you appreciate it because it meant a lot to us at the time. The process you go through here trying to figure out what exactly Eddie is saying is what every single Gen X'er in college tried to figure out at the time. What exactly are the lyrics? Once you know what they are, you never forget them and the song means that much more to you and you never understand how you didnt recognize it initially. This song, and more specifically this performance made Eddie a legend.
It's also older millennial music. This is what we grew up listening to as we grew up. Sure, I was only 5 when this came out so I didn't understand it but it was the *sounds* I grew up on.
I was one year old when they released their first album, even though, I knew who they were during my teenage years, and my parents never listened to them, my parents were more into 60's to 80's songs. I can't believe it either that's still people who don't know Pearl Jam. And I'm Brazilian!
It still means a lot to us. It's so cutting every time we lose one of these people who meant so much. I was 18 when this came out. It was a real shock to me when kurt died, then as they continued to fall, from Michael hutchence, Shannon hoon, Layne, Scott, prince, Tom petty, Chris, Chester, even sinead, it's a real killer, knife in the heart. We have Billy Corgan, Eddie Vedder and Billy from Green day ... what the he'll? Robert plant mick jagger and Paul McCartney are here but our generations heroes are clocking out.

Eddie will always be one of the best vocalists of all time. ❤️
His voice is like a warm hug.
Same with Chris Cornell.
Everything exists with its opposite, we must remember death so that we can understand the value of life, seek to live life correctly and beautifully and prepare for death in the best way. Sometimes we must remember.

I love both Eddie and Chris!
Emotion...just raw emotion wrapped in memories screamed through a throat wracked by pain. It's beautiful. It's painful. It's a wound we can't quit touching.
Four of their songs:
Black, Release, Garden, and Last Kiss...stir my emotions and bring me to tears.

Release 💔
Everything in the 90 was about heartbrake, and this band was in the center. Nothing more heartbreaking then a 16 year old kid being dumped. Aaaah those were the days❤ Brilliant band🎉

This time in rock and roll was so special because it disrupted mainstream music. Mainstream shifted from misogynistic party rock and campy love ballads thrown up by the over commercialized glam metal bands to this introspective, human examination and emotional struggle offered up by bands like Pearl Jam. And all of those unfamiliar nuances of a voice like Eddie's is an expression of the introspective emotional struggle that we all have tucked away. I think that's why we were swept away by it, we all can relate in some way. I love your discovery of this. Brilliant reaction.
I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky, but why, why, why can’t it be, why can’t it be mine That lyric gets me every time, you can just feel the heartbreak and loneliness pour out of his soul.
Eddie will not be seated. Man the variations to the vocals that Eddie brings to this performance give me goosebumps.
And welcome to Eddy Vedder I’m happy to see people appreciating his intensity still, I am lucky enough to see pearl jam this coming November in Melbourne and cannot wait!
Vulnerable, that's exactly it. Eddie lays it all out there, and you can see his bandmates look at him with care and sometimes even concern, because he was so raw and exposed, and they knew it was emotionally exhausting to go that deep and to lay there stripped bare for all to see his pain... We all felt it.
Eddie actually had a bad head cold at the time of this recording. Eddie put even more power into Jeremy from this same concert. Every song from this mtv unplugged shows why Eddie along with Chris Cornell and Layne Stayley were considered the greatest singers from this era. it is also interesting to see pearl jam live now and how eddie has had to adjust to not being able to hit some of the same notes 40 years later but still able to belt it out and blow away most singers 30 years younger than him.
@2:13 he's sings "how quick the sun can drop away" which is the 2nd verse. The first verse is supposed to be "I know she gave me all that she wore" you can tell he knows he muffed it when he shakes his head in the moment.
@brweeks881 the story is one of the reasons the song ends so emotionally was he was so pissed off the rest of the song that he flubbed that verse. Now it is considered one of their best ever live performances. Lol.
@@brweeks881 wow did not know this or catch this..thats so cool. Thanks for this tidbit!
@@Brett_Nebraska you're welcome!
Never knew that but I hear it now. Good trivia bit. That would make lesser artists stumble but he powered through and made something legendary and timeless.
The voice of a generation if not the best vocalyst of all time... To many he is.

I still remember the day I watched their MTV Unplugged for the very first time. It was a life-changing moment and I have been a huge fan since then.
Listening to Eddie Vedder is a spiritual experience everytime. ❤️
Watching someone hear this for the first time is almost as captivating as the original song. Your instant appreciation is heart warming and fantastic. I love this video.
It gave me goosebumps. And transported me. I found myself holding my breath and I watched her fall in love just like I did way back then😢 phewwwie

15:55 to 16:22 almost made me cry, its so f@#$ing beautiful and heart breaking. Sometimes, you've heard the song a million times, and hear it anew, fresh, and tortured... my heart rose in my chest and thrummed a panic of shattering. Excellent!
Eddie is a monster. Best vocalist and vocals in rock. Still good now in 50s
