I wonder if those in the audience had any idea they were watching a piece of music history?
I wish I was in that audience, I would give anything to go back to early 90 and see this legend in his prime!!!
between pearljam nirvana and alice in chains. . mtv unplugged viewers really couldnt have understood how big these moments would be. . . what a time for music it was there in the 90s
@@Blizzard0fHope yeah unplugged was probably the best live concert series there has been.. so much history was made in unplugged! Nirvana was my fav then AIC and pearljam in a tie for second
I hope your not being an arse there mate. I’m guessing cause their at a pear jam concert yup I guess they are. Be nice. Costs nothing. Xx
Of course! I was in high school when this dropped, we knew. We all knew.
Ken: "... Eddie had a terrible chest cold or something?"
Eddie: "AAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAH."
This was true. He did have a awful cold during this filming it’s said
“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be the sun in somebody else’s sky. But, why, why, why can’t it be mine?” is some flippin poetry right there.
Justin its actually star in somebody elses sky but yes that gets me everytime.
One of my favorite lines ever
It's star. He references the sun in this song earlier. Love this song!
Black is my favorite song in Ten. The poetry is spot on.
Super Psyched haha yeah it’s star and youre, right he said sun earlier... twice actually but the first time was him forgetting his lyrics unless he changed it on purpose.
When he flips out at Eddie's falsetto twist, I feel it every time.
That part and the very last little part Eddie does to end the song. Love both of those little pieces.
I feel the whole song every time😂😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
wat falsetto is?
Every time.
@@richardhowle8591 I'm no singer, so I had to look up the exact definition for you since nobody else answered. A falsetto is a method of voice production used by male singers, especially tenors, to sing notes higher than their normal range. I hope this helps you, friend:D
The Grunge bands of that time all put their heart and soul in their music. You can hear it from Alice In Chains, Nirvana, and Sound Garden too.
Rick D Branch and they got slaughtered for it. It was criminal.
Yeah Rick soundgarden! Now your talking my language.
chris>layne>eddie>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>kurt..just saying.. and i love cobain
I miss that so fuckin' bad...
LucidCharade yeah
Much love and respect for Jerry “guitar riff master” Cantrell 🤘🤘🤘
All I can think of when I watch this is what a drop-dead gorgeous beauty Eddie was .
Vedder and Gilmour growing out of their absurdly beautiful youth is something which bothers me no end hahah
IS not WAS
irishwench333 I am a straight, married man and I agree.
Yesssssssssss
Frankly, if you're straight and you DON'T find 90's Eddie gorgeous, you're not comfortable with your sexuality.
7:25 when a Vocal Coach suddenly forgets about all the technique and is blown away by the emotions.... for me this is just one of the most emotional live performances of all time
Pearl Jam Black and STP Plush are the most emotional, precious and phenomenal MTV performances on history (for me)
I'm a 50+ yr old black guy and I listen to this song once a day! To be able to feel his emotions and just raw energy of pain to pad to audience is incredible. Bravo Eddie!
@@antoniomcmahon3499 I can't listen to this song like that. Breaks my freaking heart. I just wanna reach into the speakers and hug EV
@@moniq914 and that young lady is what music is suppose to do to you when done right! Give Al Green's "How do you mend a broken heart " live version a listen or Jill Scott's first album "live" edition. You'll definitely cry a few times. Your emotions signal your great taste in music no doubt about it!
you can feel it, the power that eddie transmit singing with just his soul that's wath this man feeled in that moment
"Son of a beach towel" - sorry for cussing....lolz
That was so funny
he remembers what his grandmother would do otherwise
I went to the comments just to see if someone commented on that lol
😳😂😂😂
@@honooryu5374 She was altogether too quick with that switch, dear grand mommy..
Where did he go when he sang that song, UA-cam reactor, Jamal AKA Jamal said it best. "He went to the place where those lyrics were created."
I love Jamel!
Wow! I like that.
I love Jamal too
Jamel is the best! Love that dude! I saw his reaction too and he was totally right about that 🤘🏻
Something along the lines of "that song was crying." TWinstheNews reaction. That just felt so true.
You should see the version he did after Chris Cornell died, where he breaks down in tears... it's rough.
True story 👌🏻😎
Moxie the Game Bunny link?
It happened in Florence the month after, I was there (I'm from Florence)✌
Here's the link... for me a double emotion, because of a memory about a fact that probably even Vedder didn't konw... about 400 metres behind this stage (Park of Cascine) stands up the roof of the Opera Theather, over that is a little open air stage, about 1.000 seats capacity, Chris played there in acoustic one-man-show in June 2012 (six years before this Eddie's concert at Firenze Rocks), obviously I had been there, too.
ua-cam.com/video/IfmKAkVfvgA/v-deo.html
He did the song during his live solo tour. I cannot remember the city, it was in another country. Spain maybe? idk
between pearljam nirvana and alice in chains. . mtv unplugged viewers really couldnt have understood how big these moments would be. . . what a time for music it was there in the 90s
So glad I was alive then. I will always adore Eddie.
STP
Eddie is an incredible vessel for emotion. He uses his entire body to project his thoughts and emotions. Watch again and watch his hands, eyes, and mouth. He is a very quiet and shy person, soft spoken but the moment he gets on stage he releases it all. Pinkpop 92' Porch is a great video to express this.
It makes me emotional jus watching him! He was definitely a hot piece in those days .
@@teresafroemel79 I agree with both statements!
his way on stage reminds me a bit of aurora's. and they both remind me heavily of plenty of neurodivergent people I've met as well as myself. I'm not here to diagnose but I find it deeply fascinating, how different people use their bodies to express emotion in song.
“This is so... emotionally wrong.”
This song takes you to a place where you can’t go, anymore. Every single time.
Raw. Not wrong. Raw.
This song hurts me for some reason. His pain is so raw
This song hits a similar chord with everyone. If you have ever lost anyone close to you or your first real love that ended you will feel this song with Eddie. you can still have that same experience today but not as easily.
@@jasonsulewski8215 Of course. But just like one of the lines in Creep by Radiohead goes like "I don't care if it hurts" ; there's a cover where this old man says "It's okay if it hurts" Emotionally wrong isn't wrong either. Breathe, Teacher. Breathe.
I'll drink to that!
I like how he has a tie while he listens to Pearl Jam
Best line. "Why cant it be mine" breaks my heart every time...
Eddie is amazing. This has been called one of the best performances of all time.
No matter how many times you see this.. it just leaves you in total awe
This song is, simply, about a girl that he loved when he was younger. I’ve heard this recording many times, and I’ve found it fascinating that he essentially cries for exactly one note at the climax. He must’ve really been feeling it this performance because he added a lot. The “we belong together” isn’t in the song, but it’s heavily implied in my opinion. This song is one of the saddest I’ve ever heard. The others would be Disturbed’s Cover of The Sound Of Silence, Wings For Marie/10,000 Days by Tool, and Daddy by Korn. I recommend all of these except Daddy, because the weight of that is mostly in the lyrics and not the performance. Great review!
You should hear this live when he sang it as a tribute to Chris Cornell. He actually cries during it, it's so heart-wrenching to hear and see
All great recommendations for the other songs.
Nutshell by alice in chains unplugged is certainly among the list of sings you mentioned.
Doesnt need to be unplugged btw
I'd like to see the reaction of the gal he wrote this song about all these years later...
Backing vocals were by their amazing bass player “Jeff Ament”
and rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard
And singer eddie vedder
And me every time I hear this song.
Do-do-do-do-do-do
It just doesn’t get Eddie Vedder than this. I really love the unplugged version of Porch as well.
Good call. The Porch performance was perfect.
Porch 1 of my favorites of all time garden I am mine are the other ones among others
Porch from pinkpop 92 is one of the greatest live videos out there too.
porch was the best of the set for sure
Alice n Chains unplugged is awesome . I still.listen to it. Pearl James does wonders unplugged as well. I've heard alot ofunplugged music from the greatest and none of them have touched me like PJ and AIC...Its as if you can feel every word in every song somewhere deep .
About 6:20 it looks like you realize the full emotional impact of this song. Eddie goes to another place here and this much raw emotion can't be matched.
To me. This song is haunting, beautiful and full of heartache and pain at the same time. One I can relate to.
There’s one thing about Eddie that will always be true. He is GOING to make you feel every single word. Whether you want to or not.
He was in dating a girl all through high school and they were in a extremely close relationship and everything revolved around her and when it came later in his senior year she left him and he never saw or heard from her again. Very deep song.
I sure as hell can't sing this song like Eddie can but I can feel it like him. I think
we all have had that one person in our lives that we just can't shake.
"Son of a beach towel!" made me realize that this coach is basically Niles Crane
Is it just me or did he not sound just like him lol
LMAO this just made me laugh so loud 😂
That was one of the most adorable and cute curses I’ve ever heard!
Many singers don't sing to please critics or wait for their reactions or commentary, they sing as they want and wish without having taken singing classes deeply.
Some Great singers have been self taught to a degree, as well as some great guitarists and more.
They sing well or great because it's the way They choose to sing, knowing it's good no matter what critics have to say.
Pearl Jam are the greatest the 1990s had to offer, in ALL music.
To this day in 2020, this entire 1992 performance remains one of the best concerts televised on live TV ever! And son of a beach towel that look of anguish on his face by the end!
Eddie doesn’t get the credit for his writing his lyrics are brilliant even too this day. Great reaction ✌️
This song is Vedder’s vocal masterpiece. He is doing more than singing his voice is the lead instrument. He is almost scatting in jazz parlance but with real words. The emotion is palpable.
"All the love gone bad, turned my world to black" gets me everytime.
He was just so beautiful too.
This song......."I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in someone else's sky".....been there.
"It's like he wants to jump out of his seat." If you know anything about Eddie, he'll do much more than just jump off of that stool. 😁
Stages and high beams
@@VivacityTS that's crazy ed for u
I am pretty sure he fall off the stool during the porch preformance at the end of the set
@@drpickledude He did indeed! Gotta love him
I saw him playing monkey boy on the lighting rig Auckland '98. They got off lightly at MTV.
So, Black is my favorite song of all time, and this is my favorite performance of it. The part where you paused and said that he was building up to something("how quick the sun can drop away"), was actually him messing up the lyrics. That line you'll hear again later in the song, where it's supposed to be. You can see the realization for a split second. I think the fact that he still sang the actual heck out of it, is a testament to his abilities. To this day, his live performances of black are full of that same emotion.
He's incredible. Thanks for this cool analysis!
I'm a huge fan and never stopped being one. Still bummed Nashville was postponed. But yes, even today, when they perform that song, it's still raw, emotional and I think everyone can relate to it. I've heard it more times, in more versions than I can recall and it still hits me hard.
I noticed that too the first time I saw it "I know she gave me all that she wore" was what he meant to sing - and you're so right! That little pursed lip and slight shake of the head was him being a bit pissed at himself for messing up - but like you say, he still committed to the mistake and delivered an otherwise flawless performance.
''he's building up to something''
thats the perfect way to describe Eddie Vedder
Am I the only person who's always wildly impressed by how long he could hold a note? These days he has to breathe in the middle of them. Smoking for 30+ years will do that to you.
This video gives me chills, gets me hot, and makes me cry, all at the same time, every time. Eddie is pure perfection here--his singing is so passionate yet he seems so vulnerable, and he is just simply beautiful. He's never sounded or looked better. And what is it about the way he moves his mouth starting at 8:06 that is so incredibly sexy? 😍😍😍
That's just another reason why Grunge was the last great era...You can distinctively tell the big 4 leaf singers apart..And u just CANNOT beat their emotion
Agreed ! Grunge 4 Life 🤘🏻
The back up singers are the founding members of Pearl Jam formally Mother Love Bone guys who lost their lead vocalist Andy Wood. Then forming Pearl Jam from the ashes
It's a very personal song for the Eddie and you can feel it.
This song is about his high school sweetheart, and they got married and she divorced him for another singer who he thought was a friend. So he wrote this song. They didn't have kids, but later he remarried to a supermodel and they have children and still going strong. You can also hear isolated vocals on Eddie and others on UA-cam. Much love 💘
I was a radio DJ in my teens in the late 90's... That vocal run at 4:05 made me set up a meeting with our music director to insist this version replace the album version. Killer performance. This & the Alice in Chains "Unplugged" were simply phenomenal. Honestly, that's one of my favorite parts of any song, ever. :)
“Wants to jump out of his seat” - you should see the rest of the unplugged show. He definitely jumps out 😊
The fact that he was drop dead gorgeous didn’t hurt either. 🙋🏼♀️
I’ve been on a self destructive trip with that song for the last 3 weeks now, it’s been always my fave out of Ten, but man, this performance kills me every time. Also, Eddie’s cheekbones are something to die for! ;)
Hey, you may have listened to the CD Ten.... did you ever hear the hidden song? Maybe it might help you. It helps me when I get upset... ua-cam.com/video/uBVm-K0rsrQ/v-deo.html
Look after yourself x.
Nicholas Scriven it’s ok, the therapy will help ;) thank you x
OMG girl SAME. Once I hear it once it just doesn't leave my head. I hear it in my sleep!
Have been binging this and chris Cornells version of nothing compares for about the same time as you!
He looks very different when he finishes singing this song.
It's his gift. Just Beautiful .
I'm just thankful that Eddie is still here with us because so many from that era are gone now.
Eddie sings with his whole body and soul. I'm surprised he was able to stay seated
"I feel like he's got one gear, and that's the Eddie Vedder gear" (123 seconds later) "Holy crap!"
The fact that your eyes lit it up! Understanding, then the beach towel.... That is why I watch these!!! You get human emotion, and then educate as well!!
imagine being a 12 yr old girl seeing this on MTV for the first time. I had a puppy crush for YEARS haha. and I've kept being a fan ever since. 30 yrs now.
Do Alice in Chains - Love Hate Love or! Man in The Box both live at The Moore version ... Layne Staley at his Prime for me the Best Singer from Grunge Era
Yes, please, Love hate Love!!!
Yes to The Moore. Possibly the best performance out of the entirety of the grunge era.
Laura Gud .. yea totally agree with that
@@melisaziggy he already did love hate love
@@humzakhalid7902 yes! fantastic
6:10 that's also how I look to young Eddie Vedder, the man was handsome AF and has a voice like no other. BTW not gay.
you needn't to clarify your sexuality, though
@@sliverbox271991 I still did, what's the problem with that?
@@Nugromant it shows your inner homophobia, you can find a man handsome and be the straightest man in the world ahah are you afraid people think you're gay?
@@sliverbox271991 Lol "inner homophobia" hahahahahaa yeah sure sounds to me like intolerant people are asking for "tolerance" with ridiculous arguments
As a female, I find Eddie one of the sexiest men ever! The looks, the voice, the emotion, the personality...
His voice is the music...and Eddie uses his whole body, being and soul to create those vocals. He probably doesn't know how. That's why it is so special.
Some people are straight singers, some are performers with bells and whistles, some are storytellers with varying levels of singing expertise. Eddie Vedder is a storyteller in this song. As a writer myself, I can say the lyrics of this song always shake me. How can your eyes not get moist while listening?
That bit when he flipped in the second verse was actually an improvisation.
Yep. I'm pretty sure Eddie never had a singing lesson in his life. I'm singing 20 years and I'm pretty good, but I'd still struggle to copy that moment, and I flat out would not be able to improvise to that level. Eddie has incredible, natural talent that you just can't teach.
One of the greatest vocal performances EVER.....
we we we we belong together!!!
MTV unplugged captured history with these bands. ❤
It's always neat to watch supreme professionals who work with and analyze vocals all day every day, have that moment during a performance like this one where they change their perception. Where the hard analytics fall away and they become fans; even for a moent.
Eddie looks so young in this video. I loved that grunge look
Hands down one of the most spectacular performances.
At 7.05 the build up is so much, he seems to be taking his own pulse.
Yes, we all felt it! The angst and anticipation as Eddie sang this...
I'm so stupid jealous of those who got to see this remarkable show. I have it on vinyl and it's my favorite
Easily my favorite MTV Unplugged performance. Every song in their set was amazing and moving and I'm still blown away by Eddie.
One of my favourite songs ever. The way it builds emotionally is incredible.
One of the most cathartic songs in music history.
It was stone Gossard! Eddie wrote the lyrics on his way up to seattle to audition for the band, the music was already composed
The rasp in his voice IS HIS VOICE. So damn lucky I grew up in all that.❤️
For those of you who have a soul... One of the greatest songs ever.
The most incredible thing with this song is that you can listen everyday for a year and you STILL will react the same shocked way
One of my favorite songs of all time. Takes me back
If Conan O’Brien and Paul Rudd had a lovechild 😂😂 nah man awesome reaction 👌🏻
mixed with bill nye of music!
Eddie Vedder has the voice of what I think an angel would sound like 👍👍 U ROCK EDDIE!!!
Pearl Jam " Black " Stone Gossard (guitarest) wrote the melody Eddie wrote the lyrics. I was lucky enoudg to see them twice.
Im not exaggerating. I think Ive listened to this song at least 3 times a week for the last 20 years.
If you're wondering about his voice now, check out Sirens by Pearl Jam. Beautiful
It’s so cool to watch when you get excited when a singer does something you know is special. Eddie V is such an amazing singer
I am truly amazed that eddie could scream throughout the 90s and then in the 2000s write and perform exquisite songs such as those on the soundtrack to Into the Wild. His voice has only improved since then! Extraordinary vocalist 😍
Eddie is beautiful inside and outside 💜
I've watched this MTV UNPLUGGED SOOO MANY TIMES, IM FREAKIN CRAZY🤪 I LOVE PEARL JAM AND EDDIE IS SOOO FREAKING GORGEOUS!!
I didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I would but watching a vocal coach be blown away by his voice is pretty incredible
PLEASE consider reacting to Alice in Chains ‘Love, hate, love’ Live at the Moore!
Stone Gossard came up with that incredible melody line.
That emotional response is exactly what makes music more than just noise, its what makes it art.
This song gets me every time and makes me emotional. Such a talented guy.
Seeing Pearl Jam live transcends the energy of their music to a whole other level. You just have to see them to understand, which I'm grateful to have done thrice.
Bring back the 90's
He still sings like Eddie. Even now. Amazing.
I got to see them live. They are phenomenal
Pearl Jam was high school music for me. I remember watching MTV until the early morning hours for videos of them, Candlebox, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Green Day, etc etc. There was no Internet, so it was the radio or MTV. VH1 was more like classic rock.
I've seen PJ 6 times, but the last was over 15 years ago.
Ive listened to this song a thousand times since 92 and it gives me goosebumps everytime. Pearl Jam made such emotionally raw tunes that it had me in tears many times
Talent like this we are so fortunate to have lived in the same timeline and witness this. I remember this like it was yesterday. Amazing.
When I first fell in love with this video it was about 1993 and my friends and I would get high (Dont even smoke anymore) and watch it on a VCR tape. I probably watched it nearly 500 times back then and thought the whole set was one fo the most musically transcendent experiences of my life, and still is. With that said, I never imagined almost 30 years later I would watch people react to it for the first time. It is a tremendous delight to watch people of all musical back grounds discover this for the first time. Most of them seem to be from the hip-hop community just exploring music they've never listened to and its great to see people with limited reference to rock almost zero knowledge of Pearl Jam react, physically at least, very similar to myself nearly 30 years ago as well as someone as knowledgable and experienced as you.
I was so enthralled with watching your face during this song. I have no idea what mine looked like in 93' when I first discovered it, but had to be something akin in bafflement and awe. I was a little worried that a vocal coach like yourself would find much of his unorthodox approaches and expressions abrasive or unappealing, but it was an absolute pleasure to watch you experience and discuss this. Thanks!
Exactly my words..after almost 30 years it is incredible to see, to feel the same as then. This band saved my life and is still saving.. hopefully today young generation will find its beauty as well
Eddie , hands down has one of the best voices on this planet.
I had on captions during this. When Ken says " this is so emotionally robbed ..." caption says " mostly Rob".
When mtv unplugged was just musical history. This one and nirvana will still be played in 100 years
And the best of all of them AIC too
Welcome to the World of Pearljam
This is when people used to care more aboout real music than [perfection]
If you want to hear some of his later stuff, Rise from Into The Wild, Just Breathe from Backspacer, and Sirens from Lightning Bolt are all great songs.
I listen to the Into the Wild soundtrack on a regular basis and have just breathe tattooed on my ribcage in memory of a friend.
Son of a beach towel was also my first thought on his run up!!
I've seen that specific Pearl Jam performance of Black unplugged so many times and every single time at some point I always get goosebumps because of Eddie Vedder's voice like right now it's almost ninety degrees outside where I live and I got goosebumps because of that video.
