Eddie Vedder is a f*ing treasure. One of the best vocalists in my opinion. And the lyrics hit the mark every time. "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, why can't it be me". This line killed me 30 years ago and it will kill me forever... And I will love it forever.
K, so we need to pray for Eddie's mental health and stability. Not that I think he has a problem with either....but we lost Chris Cornell when we missed his pain.
@@traceythompson1092 Yes, Chris Cornell is my absolute favorite. My heart will forever break and at the same time be so happy every time I think of him.
I'm not embarrassed to say that I've been singing the words to this song wrong for 30+ years!! 😆 Eddie has always been a little hard to understand, but I absolutely love his voice!!
I discovered that about another one of his songs recently... lol. This one has so many hard to hear words, I just to to sound like what he said when I sing it. Lol.
LOVE the whole "Ten" album, but especially the song Black! Had just gone through a breakup with a woman I thought was "the one". The line "I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky. Why can't it me mine?" just shredded me. It was both gut wrenching, and healing at the same time...if that makes sense. Now, 30 years later, I am an acoustic guitarist/vocalist solo performer. I play at restaurants, wineries, coffee houses. I play ALL kinds of music. Oldies, to rock, to easy listening, to country, to alternative, to Motown. Anything I can change up a little and play acoustic that is well known to the masses. At some point in every show, I play "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield. As I finish the last "everybody look what's going down..." I begin to slowly bring the tempo down. I play two measures bringing the tempo down and without stopping the music, in the matching key...I go into Black's opening line: "Sheets of empty canvass....untouched sheets of clay". ALWAYS gets a raucous reaction because it's so unexpected. :-)
I'm glad he caught the ending being freestyle. not many people catch it. Has to be my favorite Unplugged ever. i believe the entire show is on here. its about 50 minutes long.
Well he looked up the lyrics part way through, so obviously what's being shown in a concert not matching up with the official lyrics means it's freestyle.
You asked what to check out next for Pearl Jam... my vote is "BETTER MAN" live at MSG (2010). They guys are 18yrs older than in this mtv unplugged so it's a GREAT example of how incredible they are. Fun fact: "Better Man" was inspired by his own childhood and his mother's struggle with an abusive husband. The song became such an inspiration for people (men and women) around the world.... IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Pearl Jam is the ONLY band still standing out of the 4 "Greats" of Grunge (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains😉). Due to suicide and/or drug overdoses of 3 of the lead singers of said "great" of Grunge.... Rest in sweet Heavenly peace Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley.🙏 Long live Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam...👊✌❤
I love this song and the way Eddie performs it with the ability to painfully convey the anguish of unrequited love is something that has stuck with me for over 30years. Not only does he have a phenomenal voice, but he's also an amazing lyracist and "Black" is a great example of his poetic penmanship. My favourite lines that capture the heartache are; "and now my bitter hands, cradle broken glass" and "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star, in somebody else's sky". Thanks BP for reacting to Pearl Jam again, if you want to do another song off the album "Ten" I suggest "Jeremy".✌🏻❤
Loving someone is no guarantee that they will love you back or love you in the same way. Experiencing that situation for the first time is how this song feels for me. Devastating heartbreak. Devastating!

Thank you for reacting to Pearl Jam’s Black! When you thought at first that it was about the loss of a child I was like “oh no! Now he’s gonna be so sad!!” I’m glad you searched the meaning then, sometimes to understand the lyrics and the meaning of a song to fully enjoy it you gotta look it up. ❤
It's interesting that this song wasn't released as a single and there was no official video made, but it's one of their most popular songs. It just resonates with people. Great reaction.

Hey BP, I remember when this song came out and how over the years it's meaning to me and what it makes me feel has changed. Those changes seem to reflect my experiences; the experiences that come with age, both the traumatic and joyful. Your first thought went to the loss of a child, completely understandable for someone in their 40's. For me, in my early 50's, I have found that Pearl Jam's BLACK & JEREMY have become even more meaningful to my life than they were 30+ years ago, especially when my interpretation of the written lyrics has matured. Have a great day.
By far my favorite favorite song of Pearl Jam ever! So much so that every other time I go karaoke, I end up singing this song first and put all my emotion into it. Love your reaction to this and your comments. Love is a journey ❤❤❤
Eddie’s performance on this song is incredible! I have always really liked the lyrics for this song…. So incredibly deep. The descriptions and analogies he uses are like they’ve been written by a fine poet. …”now my bitter hands cradle broken glass of what was everything” or “all the pictures have been washed in black tattooed everything..” …. Yeah Pearl Jam is one of those bands you gotta listen to the lyrics and appreciate the poetry. Another favorite of mine from Pearl Jam - Just Breathe. It’s really good!
Temple of A Dog "Hunger Strike" is Eddie Veddar and Chris Cornell together..... You will be blown away with both of those amazing voices on the same song! ❤❤❤
Bro, i tell people ALL the time, "You think you know love. You think you love your parents, you think you love your significant other. You have never experienced love until you experience the love you have for your child. Thats the Love of God.
He did this song in honor of his good friend in a live concert -Chris Cornell who passed away tragically to suicide. The ending of Black he broke down in tears crying and could not finish and the audience took over for him. One of the last surviving legendary singers of the 90s.
Pearl Jam's 1991 debut album 'Ten' was a minor hit when Pearl Jam performed on MTV 'Unplugged' in 1992, but record sales blew up by the summer of '92 and made it to #2 on the US charts as the video for the single 'Jeremy' became a massive hit that year... Pearl Jam joined fellow Seattle rockers Nirvana... Alice in Chains... Soundgarden ... Temple of the Dog... on the newly christened 'Grunge rock' genre that had taken over the 90's rock scene... It was something new and different from the 80's rock scene - darker, heavier and more sincere. 'Ten' has even outsold iconic 90's rock albums like Nirvana's 'Nevermind'... Alice in Chains' "Dirt" ... Smashing Pumpkins' "Siamese dream"... etc... and has sold 13 million copies in the US to date... millions more worldwide. New Pearl Jam fans still gravitate towards the songs on the album - 'Jeremy' ... 'Alive' ... 'Even flow' ...'Black' ... 'Release'... 'Porch'... etc. 'Ten' was re-released in different editions in the 2000's w/ unreleased tracks... and a documentary DVD on the making of the album. It was produced by (late) Rick Parashar, who was known for making commercial hits... After 'Ten' became a major hit, Pearl Jam was apparently disgruntled because they felt that the record was "too commercial"... They switched producers in 1993 to Brendan O'Brien to work on their 2nd album 'Vs.' and delivered a more hard rock sound that was different from 'Ten'... they never liked the term 'Grunge rock' for their music and distanced themselves from it. After the 90's ended, Pearl Jam carried on making records and toured successfully... but have never been able to replicate the success of 'Ten'... but have had a career because that record spoke to so many fans across generations.

Wow, what you said at the (15:30-min) mark about past loves becoming absolute strangers. My wife and I were just talking about this yesterday. After enough years pass by these people may even become unrecognizable to you without you hearing their voice. Hard to explain that to a younger person. Imagine trying to explain that to your younger self in the moment if that was possible? The passing of time is something and it can really make you think. Good reaction video by the way. 👍

This song always makes me cry. Unrequited love. Such a deep wound. P.s. you were soulmates. There are many kinds of soulmate. Some are just for the brief journey, others for a lifetime.❤️
I think the phrase you are looking for is "ebbs and flows" which is basically another way of saying "ups and downs". For example, "life has its ebbs and flows". It uses the oceans tides as a metaphor for constant change.

It’s about a break up but really it’s just about desperate heartbreak. Anyone who’s experienced heartbreak can relate. That’s why this performance is so powerful
This song cuts me to the core. We're both remarried, but there is just something you feel when you know that was your true soulmate, you never get over that.
"All the love gone bad, turned my world to black" gets me every time. Also Pearl Jam's debut album "Ten", which has the song "Black" is one of the best debut albums I have EVER heard! There is a couple skippable songs on it (Oceans and Garden). BUT when you are listening to the entire album, don't skip it for your first time. Cause they flow well, with going into that track, and going to the next one. IMO they are skippable on repeat listens. If you do enjoy those two songs, then more power to you man!

Man I get what you’re saying. I can’t pronounce words at all. I’ll read a book then see the movie and realize I had it wrong the whole darn time. lol. Another banger. Thanks.
It’s about a break up but really it’s just about desperate heartbreak. Anyone who’s experienced heartbreak can relate. That’s why this performance is so powerful
MAD, MAD respect to pause and review the lyrics....totally worth it
“Black” is my favorite Pearl Jam song. Call me a cliche. “Jeremy” by Pearl Jam will break you.
I JUST CLICKED ON YOUR SHORT "MY FIRST BORN" PROPS BRO, THAT'S THE REAL SHIT !!!
"ebb and flow" : Merriam Webster: used to describe something that changes in a regular and repeated way
The pain he could convey.... One of the best!!💖💖💖
This is my favorite Pearl Jam song ever❤
This song cuts me to the core. We're both remarried, but there is just something you feel when you know that was your true soulmate, you never get over that.
You are working hard, I see you 💕 all love surrounding you with yours 💕
UGH - the lyrics to this song and Eddie's PERFORMANCE, here, is JUST SO GOOD!! ENJOY, BP!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Lol ebb and flow
It's pronounced eeeeebbbennn flooooowww....lol
@@brandonjones1349😂😂😂💀
I'm glad you check out the lyrics and meaning so you can get it while you are listening. THANK YOU!!!
It's 2 AM here in Brazil, and I'm here alone watching this reaction video. Your words were so profound and resonated with me so deeply that I couldn't hold back the tears. Recently, I was abandoned by the person I thought was my soulmate, and hearing these reactions and reflections made me feel understood. Thank you for this amazing content.
Best Unplugged ever!
I’ve seen this performance countless times. And every time I watch it, it gives me chills. Beautiful song. 👌🏽
In case no one else answered, the expression you're thinking of is "ebb and flow" which means a rhythmical pattern of coming and going. Great reaction!
Ebbs & flows is probably what you were thinking of. 🤗
Thanks for doing this one. Pearl Jam is 🔥❤
OMG!!! it's incredible that you reacted to this beautiful song, I'm very grateful...even my nickname is for Pearl Jam!!!!! Thank you very much BP!!!!
By the way....i loved the "Caramba" (Im spanish) at your reaction!!!!
