"I'm throwing a party. An evil party! And you're not invited!" - unused line from Gideon in the game files.
There is unused Fanatic line in which he says "I enjoy licking your butt" or something like that. It was also used in the only cutscene in Blood II: Revelations, the expansion which scrapped after being barely started due to limited sales.
The game would've been better if they had actually used that
That's so bad it's good.
@@bravo075 So fucking raw that it's well done!

I guess if you had the money, you’d have brought both?
I would do the same probably. To be honest I played the demo and I really liked it. Also a friend had Half Life and we got bored of that instantly (we were used to games like Doom, Quake or Duke 3D in our defense). But later I borrowed Half Life from him and loved it and tried this way later and got bored of it, so I guess balance has been restored.
unbridledenthusiasm I know.
In the era of remakes, one man remakes his own review. Including *redubbing the entire dialogue* for a game he *hates*. This either the heights of passion or the depths of hatred.
I too would had heights of passion if i was rolling in above 3000 dollars a month from doing what I love, tbh.

Fun fact. Michael Shapiro who voiced Ishmael here was bouncing between recording lines for this game and another game you may have heard of in 98. Half Life. Yes. Ishmael was indeed the G man himself. I saw a documentary about the making of half life where he talked about recording both games at the same time and almost declined half life for blood but valve liked him so much they worked around his schedule. It's funny to me because he has voiced the Gman in every half life game including half life aylx. I can't imagine him with a different voice and we almost didn't get his take on him because of this game. I bet he's very thankful that valve worked with him to make it happen because it's probably his most well known role.
He also voiced Barney too but I thought the Gman reference would be more shocking than Barney Calhoun.
Every official half life game, he doesn't voice G-Man in Black Mesa or Hunt Down the Freeman.
Valve also didn't make Opposing Force or Blue Shift that was Randy Pitchford

"and the only way to get them off is to spam the use key" - except that they forgot to add this for the release version, so if one did latch on you just had to wait till it killed you or load a save file. The release version also had a bug in one of the sewer levels that made it impossible to complete and, if you read the game manual, the ritual knife weapon was meant to level up with the number of people it had killed - which wasn't actually in the game.

Monolith Productions was so sorry about how Blood II turned out that they officially released the whole source code for it to the public.
Now that right there my good gentlefolk is a truly genuine apology.
Holy shit. Does that mean we can get a proper source port of it? In-depth mods a la GZDoom?
Or is it just Blood II's code and not the Lithtech engine's?
@@DinnerForkTongueOnly for the game unfortunately.
The source code was released specifically to making modding the game as absurdly easy as possible. Because, lord almighty, Monolith knew it'd take that much to mod the game properly.
The real shame though is not a lot of mods have come out taking advantage of Monolith being super apologetic in releasing Blood II in such an underbaked state. The few mods that have are terrific.
Also, there's quite a bit of cut content in the code that can be restored and it's very doable to patch the woefully high number of bugs and incomplete parts of this game.
So even without the engine source code, Blood II can definitely be modded into a much better and finished game. We just require modders with a stout heart to take on that ardous task though.
@@stirnersretrowave5094 I mean, if anyone was gonna do it, they'd have to re-do the whole shooting part from the ground up, make it in some way consistent, not this busted random crap where you never know if killing an enemy will take 2 or 20 shots form the same gun and maybe it's doable, but is it really worth it?

They're gone :(
18:55 - That's the notification sound that you have a new objective. Now, a good game would normally silence such sounds while a cutscene plays, but Blood 2 is, you know... RAW!
The designers probably designed the levels and enemy placements with a combination of “We’ll come back and fix this later, but this placeholder is fine for bug testing”, and “Well of course it has to be dickish, this is Blood 2, we were assholes to the player all the time in Blood 1”, and that second one was from the mentality that they would complete all of the game design ideas they had, that would make the dickishness actually fair, like having more consistent damage, so a quick player could immediately deal with whatever enemies they spawned in.
As a game designer myself, I can see what they were thinking, that being that they were not expecting to completely run out of time, and not be allowed to fix anything.
Levels probably repeat so often, because the actual levels they planned to put there were still being constructed.
The RNG of all the weapons was probably something they were trying to fix, to make it less MASSIVELY random.
So looking at all this, I can easily feel the pain they must have felt when they asked for a few more weeks to finish it, and were denied.

The most baffling thing about the weird damage randomization is that Doom does the same thing but unlike Blood 2 it's usually more the difference of it taking maybe 1 or 2 extra shots, not 5+ from the same weapon that could potentially 1 shot the same enemy. Like bullets as a whole in Doom are basically a d3*5 or 5-15 damage. Probably helps that Doom's creators had time to test the damage randomization to make sure it wasn't too extreme.
Doom only had 1 year of development Blood 2 had 18 months. Calculating mean, median, etc of a random distribution function is not something that requires a completed build of a game and is basic due diligence of a programmer. So in this case it looks like the developers simply had poor judgment
@@ghoulsarefree Well considering Blood 2 runs on a more complicated 3D engine along with the multiple reused levels, I suspect development might've gotten bogged down in game engine stuff, fixes, additions, having to fix any bugs from the new additions, etc.
The development for this game seems like it was a mess in general, down to even foundational portions of it.
@@inkmime yes i make this comment only because civvie has told a version of history which villainizes GT Interactive even moreso than Monolith themselves do (if you read the quotes from Jace Hall who takes part of the blame). there are clearly many aspects of Blood 2 which were just poorly judged or conceived in a way that extra time would not have fixed. and it should be known that Monolith got paid for the job it is not as if they somehow went backrupt they just fucked up and made a bad game it happens
@@ghoulsarefree I... didn't really specify who's to blame really, just sorta saying with all I know of what went on in this game's dev cycle that a year of that time could very well have been spent just on the engine since the early lithtech engine was pretty damn unstable. Were mistakes made? I mean I guess so, not sure whos they are but Blood 2 needed way more time in the oven regardless cause it's pretty clear development time wasn't properly allocated to the actual game content because of the technical issues.
@@ghoulsarefree I'm 100% certain Blood 2 would have been a much, much better game if the dev team were given the time they needed. It's impossible to make a game with the expectations that suddenly you were expected to rise your hands off of the keyboard and throw whatever you had gotten made that far into release like some fucked up game show.
"I mean the point of these remastered editions is to clean up, fix, and optimize the base product" -Gmanlives addressing Duke Nukem 3d: Megaton edition and that's exactly what you did, civvie. Fantastico and bravo. You didn't change a thing at all.
What I remember most about this game was the 100% unplayable multiplayer mode and the horrendous patch effort to fix it.
Multiplayer had pings of 1000-4000, and performance was a slideshow on top that at. My ping averaged 2000, and that was on a college T1 line! This was 1998, when the overwhelming majority of people were on dialup. Getting over 1000 ping on a game when your connection was literally 1000 times faster than 99.9% of everyone else, just amazingly raw.
Monolith promised that an upcoming patch would fix everything. The patch kept getting more and more delayed as they kept adding more and more features to it. Useless fixes like "A small percentage of users playing with an obscure joystick brand are reporting inverted controls not working." Rather than just fix the unworking multiplayer, they kept delaying to add more stuff like that: the 1% of the joystick market using that obscure brand out of the 1% of FPS players who used a joystick. Monolith claimed they wanted everything included under one big mega patch instead of many smaller patches.
So the "mega patch" finally gets released. It was something like 80-200mb. Again, this was back when 99% of households still used dial-up. Imagine how long that would take to download on a 56k modem. Turns out it wasn't an issue, because the patch was completely useless! I didn't notice the slightest bit of performance improvement. Online, offline. No mechanical or technical changes at all. The one and only noticeable changed was Blood 2 taking up 200 additional megabytes of your hard drive space (not insignifcant in early 1999).
I hope those obscure joystick brand owners are really fucking happy with themselves.

I remember buying a new video card for this game. I was so stoked since my friends and I loved the first game and still played the death match/blood bath mode at this point... The only thing I liked about this game is the audio clip "remember progress before safety!"

“Fuck this game with a pineapple!” Is still one of my favorite quotes from Civvie ever
8:09 for everyone's enjoyment.
Looks like they didn't set a floor on the random number generation. Each gun just has a different ceiling.
Yeah, Doom has RNG damage too, but the difference is is that there is a minimum amount of damage each gun can do, which, while obviously not optimal, will get the job done, and usually isn't that far away from the maximum damage. Biggest differences likely go to the BFG and the super shotgun, the first cause of the strange tracer behavior and the former because of the spread.
Makes sense
Doom had some pretty random damage, but only on projectiles and melee atacks, bullets had very little random damage.
Which is remarkably bad design.
@@McBanditHope Doom's RNG is clever as fuck, because it isn't actually real RNG at all, it's just a bunch of predefined tables where values are cycled through by nearly every single thing that happens in the game, because that used less memory than just randomly drawing up an arbitrary number.
In theory, that means every action in the game would be 100% predictable, but in practice human reaction speed makes that impossible.
of all the bad decisions I can explain the tesla canon. It's not a Tesla canon. It's the Thomas Edison canon, which took Tesla's idea and made it slightly worse.
"And Monolith seems to love sequels" Yeah about that... WHERE THE HELL IS CLAW 2, MONOLITH? I've been waiting since 1997!
Someone else remembers!
Judging from the Shogo video, Civvie himself remembers, too. If we get lucky, he'll cover that game as well in the future.
@@stemmarb7r751
Man, that'll be the day.
What about Shogo 2?! With cell shading!
the rights to claw was bought out by another company and they turned claw 2 into a shitty xbox live arcade game and released it back in 2008
Comparing the change in Civvie's vocal delivery from the OG Blood II vids to this remaster is really interesting.
It's as if the OG vids were recited to me while I'm taking a morning dump
I can just hear a muffled Civvie narrating the script with his face in the crack of the bathroom door.
But I missed some of the punch lines bc I must have gotten some of my shit particles in my ear.
I outstretch a hand covered in a Quake-esque color palette of ear feces to open the door.
_bottom lip is hanging down n shit_
"wat u say cv??"
And then, a mildly irritated Civvie raises his voice a few healthy decibels to say the entire monologue over again - a little aggro sounding, but with a fresh, bold enthusiasm - I _must_ understand the pain Blood II caused him.
Plus I can hear every syllable clear as day and I'm here for it, so I recline back onto the toilet and enjoy.... yeah that's what the remaster is like
Man, just be glad you never played this on release.
- You couldn't detach 'grabby' enemies. The use key simply didn't work. Leeches were a one hit, essentially.
- Explosions and earthquakes would push you out of the level, maybe 1 time in 3.
- The Howitzer was crazily overpowered, along with the Tesla alt-fire.
- Climbing out of water would send you flying into the sky, killing you more than half the time.
- That kamikaze attack Fanatics did? They would do that almost every time you killed one if you didn't gib it. I forget exactly what happened - but if I recall, they either fired themselves at you, or became ultra tanky. They were a nightmare.
I'm sure I've...repressed more.
I still enjoyed it, weirdly enough. Quite possibly a case of Stockholm syndrome.
Civvie's put more effort into discussing Blood 2 than they did making it.
Johnny Burnes They put effort. The publishers were just dicks who wouldn’t let them finish it.
Correction: Civvie's put more effort into discussing Blood 2 than they were allowed to put in making the game.
Did you even watch the video?
@Caramel! a whole ass hour
@@AleK0451 Really seems that way; this is some Daikatana-level cheapness.

Are we talking about GT or Bethesda?
I know bethesda hate is in right now but when devs under it’s publishing wing ask for extra time and the project is big and important enough they generally give them that extra time
DooM Eternal got delayed more than once to get polished to a mirror sheen
@@badger6728 Hell, for all we know, Doom Eternal was delayed because of Fallout 76's failure!
I understand the jokes poking fun at them but seriously, people hate them a bit too much imho.
Sidewinder 76 is a tragedy. Bethesda Austin deserved better. A bunch of guys and gals cast off of BGS in Washington given a project by the publishers that’s way, way too big for their combined level of experience... that stuff you can totally lay at Bethesda’s feet. There are many different ways to be shitty managers.

They fucked Obsidian up, so I don't know about that, chief.
Bethesda is that one guy that sells you stale potato chips with a 10% discount if you buy two.
Seriously badass "In the Mouth of Madness" opening.
Can we just stop and appreciate the fact this legend took his old video, transcribed it and re-read it?
18:23 Well, Shadow the Hedgehog can hold a minigun with 1 hand and fire it too for hundreds of rounds without the recoil snapping his arm off but he’s the ultimate life form so I expect no less. Best gun in his game by far and it barely ever appears unless there’s tons of big foot mechs to destroy & steal it from Ion Maiden style.
I actually really enjoyed Blood II when it came out, however I did feel the difficulty was weird, and the final boss was a dumb bullet sponge. I found myself running through some segments instead of fighting, to save ammo and my sanity. Also the most dangerous enemy in the entire game are doors, they can accidentally insta-kill you. I really love this remastered video too!
The doors can kill you? Huh...
Well, it's good to see that Blood 2 inherited at least a little Build DNA from it's predecessor.
It was included in some sort of PC game megapack I bought back in the early 00s from Walmart. Right around the time they were liquidating their surplus of unsold games and would just box up a bunch and slap a price sticker on them. I also got no one lives forever, that die hard game with nakatomi plaza, and alien vs predator.
There are so many Gordon Ramsay clips, you would think you were watching a weird episode of Hells Kitchen

I laughed for 2 minutes straight and couldn't breathe during it. That is single handedly the most unintentionally hilarious thing I have ever seen.
All of the stuff with the other chosen - how they're talked about, how they randomly show up in cutscenes, say they're helping - makes it feel like they intended some sort of co-op or NPC ally, like Daikatana.
Guessing it was all cut, cuz... well, Daikatana.
Finally I can hear the Blood II video in crisp... whatever the audio equivalent of 1440p is.

I think the whole idea with the Singularity Gun is that it's bringing the Chosen from alternate universes where they survived instead of Caleb, which would have been a cool idea if they actually, you know... DID ANYTHING.

Somewhere in the near future, Night Dive might hopefully remaster Blood II in the engine they used for Fresh Supply and Turok II Remastered. In any case, Blood II was still major missed opportunity. If only GT just allowed Monolith to properly finish their game instead of shipping it out when it wasn't finished. I kind of wish that Monolith had used an already established engine instead of trying to create their own for Blood II, but then without LithTech, we wouldn't have had No One Lives Forever 1+2 or Tron 2.0.
I would've liked Blood II to have adopted the Jedi Knight approach in terms of storytelling and design. Jedi Knight was able to focus its story and gameplay experience pretty well within its engine limitations, plus it had live action cutscenes. Seeing the best elements of JK combined with the best elements of Blood would've been nice. Blood II could've also benefited from focusing its weapons and enemies as it did in Blood 1. Borrowings from Hexen+Hexen II's class system might've also helped by giving each of the Chosen their own weapons and unique special abilities.
All in all, Monolith just did not have enough time to properly fulfill the ambitious story and gameplay ideas they promised on their original website. Both SHOGO and Blood II would've benefited tremendously if they had been polished to the level of No One Lives Forever, a game which represented what both games could've been if they had enough time.
@Starbird Disagrees that's pretty cool, people seeing a possible monolith winner in there, even with the thick crust of raw jank

Stephan Weyte spoke the oneliners of the Horrormovie "FPS : FIRST PERSON SHOOTER" which is a feature horrormovie looking like a 90s first person shooter :)
If you love Stefan Weyte then id recommend looking at Iratus lord of the dead. He voices the narrator, does an excellent job!
I had to look it up, good lord how I love Stephen Weyte.
Narrator _and_ protagonist! Indeed, it is a fine, fun game that lets you more or less play as the bad guys from Darkest Dungeon, but in its own setting where the "good guys" are even more questionably good. Such a joy to be giving some other jerk a heart attack instead of constantly worrying one of your chaps will have one.
