Caleb's genuine love for Ophelia while being an otherwise remorseless monster was always the most interesting thing about him, so it's rad seeing this mod take that and run with it.
and its even more funnier that Ophelia was actually the one to introduce him to the Cabal, Caleb of course truly loved her but she had bigger plans then he knew.

Caleb offered his life to the cult of Chernobog, giving everything to become a Chosen only to be betrayed, cast aside along with Ophilia as expendable. It seems as much a power struggle as it is a revenge tale. After sacrificing his life for a cult which now wants him dead, Caleb has little recourse for redemption but to destroy the entire cult. Strikes me as he's doing this for what Ophilia and himself wanted, and the anger over what was lost between the two of them is just a cherry on top. But hey, really it's just a b-movie script which lands somewhere between spaghetti western and horror as a loose pretext to blow shit up with the build engine. So in reality we're both dumbasses for trying to read between the lines. >
Having the Silent Hill level start off with Caleb staring at a mirror in a public bathroom and then seeing the ghost of his dead girlfriend was a really nice touch.

I'd also like to give kudos the the custom music submod. Extremely atmospheric stuff. "Lost Highway" isn't the flashiest map, but the atmosphere is fantastic with the custom music.
This video is purely Civvie having the time of his life and it shows. I'd love to see him cover the update that's coming out, because _holy _*_FUCK_* is Bloatoid pulling out all the stops with his overhauls.
All these episodes in and I still can't get over how one can kick an enemies severed heads around like a soccer ball in an engine that usually only let the player leave bloody footprints after stepping on a dead guy's corpse
What always struck me about Blood was Caleb's relationship with Ophelia and how that made him a lot more vulnerable than other FPS protagonists of the time. Hearing him wail at the sight of her sacrificed body really endeared me to him because it grafted real human emotions onto an archetype that was otherwise nothing but bloodlust and badassery. So to see that this mod took that element of Caleb's character and magnified it into an entire fucking *level*, said level being a technically impressive masterpiece in it's own right (and a parody of one of my favorite game franchises) is just... man. You ever play, watch or see some piece of art where you just know the art maker is on the same wavelength as you? That's what Death Wish is for me.
I don't want to shit on something that resonated with you, but...murdering the protagonist's girlfriend to justify a rampage has gotta be the least-original shit in modern storytelling. It WAS a really good wail, & compared to Blood 2 the characterisation in the 1st is top-shelf, but..."homicidal because dead girlfriend" isn't a "real human emotion" cmon guys

And furthermore, *grief* isn't exactly something expressed by FPS protagonists of the time, especially when contrast them against his contemporaries. The closest is Doomguy, and that's a text prompt, not a fully voiced line. Caleb expressing that was pretty unique for the time, vulnerability isnt something you think of when playing a badass fps protagonist.
You know, in all the Blood games, the cultists screaming to death is some of the best, most realistic enemy screaming I've heard in a game. There's a sense of satisfaction hearing these scumbags scream.
Not only them, but the zombies as well. There's just something about that loud echoing "AUUUGH" that's just pure dopamine to my eardrums, which is only amplified when you nail a horde of them with dynamite or napalm
Yes, I've always thought the same, the VA really gave it all recording those intense death sounds, makes you wanna find and kill more of those bastards. And if I'm not mistaken, those were done by the same guy who did Caleb.
Cultists speak in this creepy language that feels a lot like they're mocking you. Plus they're incredibly obnoxious in how they behave. So hearing them scream in terror and agony when killed is beyond cathartic.
I thought I was the only one who loved hearing them scream through this. Especially when they go flying past after a bundle of dynamite gets lobbed at them
19:30 been probably said several times already, but the first 2 maps here are direct homages to the original Silent Hill games. You start in a rest room and walk a lengthy forest path to the town like in SH2, explore a spooky school that gets even more crazy like in SH1, and obviously The Room's a nonstop SH4 reference.
"Groovy" That could be a reference to several things, but since the episode had the whole book thing... I'm calling it the next episode is Evil Dead related.

But Hail to the King ... There's so much to talk about. It's UGLY, it's a complete mess, the chainsaw is bad and broken, the combat system is HELLISH as FUCK, the animation of the player and the ennemies are laaaame. Good boys and girls had Resident evil for Christmas, naughty ones had Evil Dead Hail to the King.
7:48 it looks like they made the stairs and seats slope down here so that the player wouldn't immediately get gunned down by all the cultists in the theater. That's some class level design right there.

As someone who thoroughly enjoyed Blood in the olden days, and picked up Fresh Supply for some future nostalgia trip but never got around to playing it again... seeing how much love someone put into this, and Civvie giving us a little sample tour of sheer awesomeness... may just have shown me the meaning of that ASMR thing people are always going on about these days. And now I have a great incentive to work up the gumption for it myself, some time.^^

All you have to do to play on extra crispy is know enemy behavior, optimize ammo, and approach all corner with a subtle peak at the lowest angle possible to minimize LOS. I think he could do it. Just dont run around everywhere.

I would say "Pro-" part is a meme, it's not full-on serious. He is competent, but it exists so he can be deemed good at a particular game and get dissed in the comments because he "sucks at video games" at the same time.
One of the main things is how interactive yet non scripted the levels feel. There's always something triggered to spook you like a haunted house but it's not so much a pre scripted situation as it feels more like placing out in game objects and simply activating them. The main thing is how silent and passive it all is. It doesn't ever stop the flow of the action and say Hey look over here let me show you something awesome. No all pre stuff all flows along with your journey and it never feels like a slog. Only setting the atmosphere cause if you wanna speedrun, you can. It doesn't hold you back ever as if everything's simply happening around you and you don't actually matter and that's what I miss in games. One of my most memorable ones is in The Room when you walk under the rail and you see the lights flicker as a train drive by and stops. Something so simple but the lighting effect and sound is so powerful it sticks with me. That and I had to redo that damn part over and over and over cause I didn't have enough ammo for something i've forgot.
I love how the map Whisper Peak dips its toes into the psychological horror pool, implying Ophelia's death is actually haunting Caleb. Its stuff like that why Caleb is miles above Duke and Lo Wang. Blood has dark humor and Caleb likes to wisecrack but Blood at it's best never treats him like a joke. Caleb is never portrayed as a goofy clown caricature like Duke and Wang can be. Blood is horror comedy in the best way, where the comedy and the horror never overwhelm the other.
i always interpreted Ophelia turning into Choking Hands in that level as Caleb thinking her death is his fault, i.e. her blood is on his hands. incredibly impressive that i can write that about a fucking Build Engine mod that doesn't even have any unique assets
Ya know the thing about Shadow Warrior? If we assume (the devs said they're not) that the three new games are prequels to the original, because Lo Wang is young in them, Wang goes through so much stuff, it actually leaves a mark on him. If in the first two he's this confident, sly, but not very bright badass, then, at the beginning of the third one he's effectively gone coo-coo. In the original game, Wang is hitting 60, if I remember correctly, and he's borderline insane, spewing lame one-liners (they're not really lame, most of the time, but you know), making pop-culture references, keeping a nuke in his dojo, cannibalizing his enemies, and unsuccessfully attempting to womanize (including teen girls). Sure, he's apparently saved the world at the end of the third game (I don't know, I've never managed to beat it), but his mental health got banged up pretty badly. It may not be as deep as Caleb, but it's still pretty interesting when you look at it from a bigger picture standpoint. Duke, though, Duke never changes.

I'm listening to this Blood series on headphones at work, like a podcast and all those explosions and screams of dying and burning cultists is so soothing for my soul...
My dad never got me doom when I was a kid. It sucked because all the other kids got Doom and I didnt and I wanted to play it. Well he didnt give a fuck about doom. Instead my dad got me Blood. This game scared the shit out of me when I was a kid and took a lot of nerve for me to play it and I never beat it without cheating and I never appreciated it. Later and by later I mean like 5 years ago now that I'm an adult I finally played it legit. I was blown away at what I missed out on and what I really did experience as far and beyond one of the best intense FPS games of the 90's. Last year I finally playd Death Wish and it is so fucking good that you can literally sit back and play it and you'll completely forget its a mod. Thats how unbelievably well made it is. Its mind blowing that I beat it last year because I went through all the "top mods" for Blood and as I was watching your review I was like "Holy shit yes I remember all these levels." That's how good it is. The mod feels more authentic, more realized and more of EVERYTHING from the original episodes. Hell I remember the platforming, the puzzles, the well thought out pacing and ramp up. I even remember how some of the levels just start you out in this immediately great wonderful scenario of atmosphere then you get shot immediately because you didnt move. Why? Because its blood. The only and I mean ONLY thing that could be done for this is if they added new weapons.

I knew ONE kid that had Doom and I was not particularly close with said kid. ON THE OTHER HAND. My dad did eventually get me a game console on the cheap that had Doom . . . an atari jaguar. And thus that's how I first officially played doom thinking it was this intense quiet creepy silent horror shooter game.
Blood does have a weapons mod so you can replace some weapons. I usually replace the pitchfork with an axe and the tommy gun with the grease gun. They don't really change the gameplay much as mostly visual, but it does help make it feel a bit more like a proper sequel.
@Baron o Markers Ancient Aliens works, though it's not as cohesive or spectacular in detail as Eviternity. I put it on the same level as Scythe or Alien Vendetta as far as Civvie's interest goes. Valiant, I'm honestly not sure. Love it to bits, but not sure. It doesn't have the same gameplay polish as Ancient Aliens, and the episodes feel disjointed with each other.

The spiky things on the beach are traps made for tanks, though they were repurposed on D-day to pierce the hulls of landing craft and make it harder to make an amphibious landing and assault. They're called the czech hedgehog, and though they're static and easy to spot, they still make it harder for heavy vehicles to pass through certain areas, since you have to either find a way around, or get out and move the things.

Level design is what makes or breaks a fight. Tchernobog's line-of-sight attack needs there to be minimal cover to be a real threat, and the distraction from all the zombies and hellhounds keeps you from cheesing him just long enough to put some real pressure on you.

Also, "Cerberus" has a root meaning "spotted", so Hades basically named the three-headed, snake-tailed guard dog of the underworld "Spot".

Heck I was talking with a guy earlier today about how greek myth had a recurring thing about how each pantheon was perceivably terrible which necessitated being replaced by the next, which Zeus tried to stop by absorbing his first wife...and then Gaea made Typhon and that failed too. Really, it is generally agreed upon that Hades decidedly NOT being an Olympian kept him out of the vast majority of assholery while he just did his extremely necessary job guaranteeing that basically no one would ever screw with him. There was the kidnappping Persephone and tricking her into being part of the physical realm thing, sure. Funny thing about that is, Persephone was absolutely worshipped as a Queen of the Dead looooooooooooong before Hades was even conceptualized in Greek mythology, so the him kidnapping her thing was literally just an excuse at rewriting her origin story exactly like a super hero comic book trying to make a major character less significant. I choose to interpret this as "she actually kidnapped him and Greeks were too chauvinistic to admit that a *woman* was the rightful ruler of all dead and departed souls and thusly all men eventually".

Death Wish is what I imagine Blood would've originally been like, if they had like 8 years and modern processing power. Or like Civvie said, the *real* Blood 2.* That's about the highest compliment I could possibly pay a mod to the best of all boomer shooters. _*Just like Doom 64 is the real Doom 3_
I still can't get over E3M1. It's just this perfectly anachronistic masterpiece. It feels exactly like a blood level should, yet it couldn't possibly have existed in 1998 for obvious reasons. I'm not spoiling what E3M1 is for those reading the comments, it's a doozie.
Holy cow, Civvie missed the second secret level after the Jigsaw level where you have to escape a giant prison, and by extension the return secret area as well (something Civvie mentioned but is so much cooler than I realized) I had to come back and check the video after I found it when I started playing, because it didn't look familiar. Also, having finally started playing Death Wish myself, wow is it amazing and impressive.
Civvie mentioned Shudder Island but because of the version of DW he was playing with Fresh Supply made the secret exit skip to the credits screen. He also didn't show everything the mod had to offer cause like he said, it's a lot of cool shit.
I’ve watched your Pro series multiple times and it inspired me to play through Doom 1-3 and 64 and their expansions, then Blood and all of its expansions and now Death Wish. One thing I’ve noticed about Fresh supply, and it happens with Nblood too, there are a couple of missing sound effects, for instance the phantasm has two death sounds but when the other one is meant to play it’s just silent.
the heights Death Wish reaches with some of the visuals in the level design is the most ambitious I've ever played in a shooter. E3M9 Nightmare starting off with Caleb flying over city lights Little Nemo-style into a literal sandland dream world is incredible.

What always struck me about Blood was Caleb's relationship with Ophelia and how that made him a lot more vulnerable than other FPS protagonists of the time. Hearing him wail at the sight of her sacrificed body really endeared me to him because it grafted real human emotions onto an archetype that was otherwise nothing but bloodlust and badassery. So to see that this mod took that element of Caleb's character and magnified it into an entire fucking *level*, said level being a technically impressive masterpiece in it's own right (and a parody of one of my favorite game franchises) is just... man.
You ever play, watch or see some piece of art where you just know the art maker is on the same wavelength as you? That's what Death Wish is for me.
And meanwhile Blood 2 took that relationship and used it to make crude sex jokes.

And furthermore, *grief* isn't exactly something expressed by FPS protagonists of the time, especially when contrast them against his contemporaries. The closest is Doomguy, and that's a text prompt, not a fully voiced line. Caleb expressing that was pretty unique for the time, vulnerability isnt something you think of when playing a badass fps protagonist.

You know, in all the Blood games, the cultists screaming to death is some of the best, most realistic enemy screaming I've heard in a game. There's a sense of satisfaction hearing these scumbags scream.
Not only them, but the zombies as well. There's just something about that loud echoing "AUUUGH" that's just pure dopamine to my eardrums, which is only amplified when you nail a horde of them with dynamite or napalm

Me when I discovered CV11's channel.
I was just recovering from pneumonia, still bed ridden when I found his channel. Not only quality entertainment, but got me through some tough times.
As someone who thoroughly enjoyed Blood in the olden days, and picked up Fresh Supply for some future nostalgia trip but never got around to playing it again... seeing how much love someone put into this, and Civvie giving us a little sample tour of sheer awesomeness... may just have shown me the meaning of that ASMR thing people are always going on about these days.
And now I have a great incentive to work up the gumption for it myself, some time.^^

All you have to do to play on extra crispy is know enemy behavior, optimize ammo, and approach all corner with a subtle peak at the lowest angle possible to minimize LOS. I think he could do it. Just dont run around everywhere.

I would say "Pro-" part is a meme, it's not full-on serious. He is competent, but it exists so he can be deemed good at a particular game and get dissed in the comments because he "sucks at video games" at the same time.
One of the main things is how interactive yet non scripted the levels feel.
There's always something triggered to spook you like a haunted house but it's not so much a pre scripted situation as it feels more like placing out in game objects and simply activating them.
The main thing is how silent and passive it all is. It doesn't ever stop the flow of the action and say Hey look over here let me show you something awesome.
No all pre stuff all flows along with your journey and it never feels like a slog. Only setting the atmosphere cause if you wanna speedrun, you can. It doesn't hold you back ever as if everything's simply happening around you and you don't actually matter and that's what I miss in games.
One of my most memorable ones is in The Room when you walk under the rail and you see the lights flicker as a train drive by and stops. Something so simple but the lighting effect and sound is so powerful it sticks with me. That and I had to redo that damn part over and over and over cause I didn't have enough ammo for something i've forgot.
I love how the map Whisper Peak dips its toes into the psychological horror pool, implying Ophelia's death is actually haunting Caleb.
Its stuff like that why Caleb is miles above Duke and Lo Wang. Blood has dark humor and Caleb likes to wisecrack but Blood at it's best never treats him like a joke. Caleb is never portrayed as a goofy clown caricature like Duke and Wang can be.
Blood is horror comedy in the best way, where the comedy and the horror never overwhelm the other.
i always interpreted Ophelia turning into Choking Hands in that level as Caleb thinking her death is his fault, i.e. her blood is on his hands.

Ya know the thing about Shadow Warrior? If we assume (the devs said they're not) that the three new games are prequels to the original, because Lo Wang is young in them, Wang goes through so much stuff, it actually leaves a mark on him. If in the first two he's this confident, sly, but not very bright badass, then, at the beginning of the third one he's effectively gone coo-coo. In the original game, Wang is hitting 60, if I remember correctly, and he's borderline insane, spewing lame one-liners (they're not really lame, most of the time, but you know), making pop-culture references, keeping a nuke in his dojo, cannibalizing his enemies, and unsuccessfully attempting to womanize (including teen girls). Sure, he's apparently saved the world at the end of the third game (I don't know, I've never managed to beat it), but his mental health got banged up pretty badly. It may not be as deep as Caleb, but it's still pretty interesting when you look at it from a bigger picture standpoint. Duke, though, Duke never changes.

My dad never got me doom when I was a kid. It sucked because all the other kids got Doom and I didnt and I wanted to play it.
Well he didnt give a fuck about doom. Instead my dad got me Blood. This game scared the shit out of me when I was a kid and took a lot of nerve for me to play it and I never beat it without cheating and I never appreciated it.
Later and by later I mean like 5 years ago now that I'm an adult I finally played it legit.
I was blown away at what I missed out on and what I really did experience as far and beyond one of the best intense FPS games of the 90's.
Last year I finally playd Death Wish and it is so fucking good that you can literally sit back and play it and you'll completely forget its a mod. Thats how unbelievably well made it is. Its mind blowing that I beat it last year because I went through all the "top mods" for Blood and as I was watching your review I was like "Holy shit yes I remember all these levels." That's how good it is. The mod feels more authentic, more realized and more of EVERYTHING from the original episodes.
Hell I remember the platforming, the puzzles, the well thought out pacing and ramp up. I even remember how some of the levels just start you out in this immediately great wonderful scenario of atmosphere then you get shot immediately because you didnt move. Why? Because its blood.
The only and I mean ONLY thing that could be done for this is if they added new weapons.

I knew ONE kid that had Doom and I was not particularly close with said kid. ON THE OTHER HAND. My dad did eventually get me a game console on the cheap that had Doom . . . an atari jaguar. Blood does have a weapons mod so you can replace some weapons. I usually replace the pitchfork with an axe and the tommy gun with the grease gun. They don't really change the gameplay much as mostly visual, but it does help make it feel a bit more like a proper sequel.

Ancient Aliens works, though it's not as cohesive or spectacular in detail as Eviternity. I put it on the same level as Scythe or Alien Vendetta as far as Civvie's interest goes.
Valiant, I'm honestly not sure. Love it to bits, but not sure. It doesn't have the same gameplay polish as Ancient Aliens, and the episodes feel disjointed with each other.

Civvie, I just wanna say that you're one of the few content creators I subscribe to where every single upload is a treat. I hope you're enjoying making videos as much as we are enjoying watching them.
The spiky things on the beach are traps made for tanks, though they were repurposed on D-day to pierce the hulls of landing craft and make it harder to make an amphibious landing and assault. They're called the czech hedgehog, and though they're static and easy to spot, they still make it harder for heavy vehicles to pass through certain areas, since you have to either find a way around, or get out and move the things.
Thanks for recommending this Civvie. The download link was dicey AF but I’ve played through it 8 times now and it just keeps getting better every time.

This guy actually making Tchernobog threatening is his best achievement in this entire mod full of great achievements.
Level design is what makes or breaks a fight. Tchernobog's line-of-sight attack needs there to be minimal cover to be a real threat, and the distraction from all the zombies and hellhounds keeps you from cheesing him just long enough to put some real pressure on you.
Hey Civvie. Cerberus is a Greek word, so the proper plural would be "Cerberuses", just as the plural for octopus is octopuses. Words with Latin roots have "i's" at the end.
Also, "Cerberus" has a root meaning "spotted", so Hades basically named the three-headed, snake-tailed guard dog of the underworld "Spot".

Heck I was talking with a guy earlier today about how greek myth had a recurring thing about how each pantheon was perceivably terrible which necessitated being replaced by the next, which Zeus tried to stop by absorbing his first wife...and then Gaea made Typhon and that failed too. Really, it is generally agreed upon that Hades decidedly NOT being an Olympian kept him out of the vast majority of assholery while he just did his extremely necessary job guaranteeing that basically no one would ever screw with him.
There was the kidnappping Persephone and tricking her into being part of the physical realm thing, sure. Funny thing about that is, Persephone was absolutely worshipped as a Queen of the Dead looooooooooooong before Hades was even conceptualized in Greek mythology, so the him kidnapping her thing was literally just an excuse at rewriting her origin story exactly like a super hero comic book trying to make a major character less significant. I choose to interpret this as "she actually kidnapped him and Greeks were too chauvinistic to admit that a *woman* was the rightful ruler of all dead and departed souls and thusly all men eventually".

It's insane to me that this was created by one guy. There is more attention to detail here than in most Triple A titles released today.
Death Wish is what I imagine Blood would've originally been like, if they had like 8 years and modern processing power. Or like Civvie said, the *real* Blood 2.* That's about the highest compliment I could possibly pay a mod to the best of all boomer shooters.

I still can't get over E3M1. It's just this perfectly anachronistic masterpiece. It feels exactly like a blood level should, yet it couldn't possibly have existed in 1998 for obvious reasons. I'm not spoiling what E3M1 is for those reading the comments, it's a doozie.
Holy cow, Civvie missed the second secret level after the Jigsaw level where you have to escape a giant prison, and by extension the return secret area as well (something Civvie mentioned but is so much cooler than I realized)
I had to come back and check the video after I found it when I started playing, because it didn't look familiar. Also, having finally started playing Death Wish myself, wow is it amazing and impressive.
Civvie mentioned Shudder Island but because of the version of DW he was playing with Fresh Supply made the secret exit skip to the credits screen. He also didn't show everything the mod had to offer cause like he said, it's a lot of cool shit.

I’ve watched your Pro series multiple times and it inspired me to play through Doom 1-3 and 64 and their expansions, then Blood and all of its expansions and now Death Wish.

One thing I’ve noticed about Fresh supply, and it happens with Nblood too, there are a couple of missing sound effects, for instance the phantasm has two death sounds but when the other one is meant to play it’s just silent.

the heights Death Wish reaches with some of the visuals in the level design is the most ambitious I've ever played in a shooter. E3M9 Nightmare starting off with Caleb flying over city lights Little Nemo-style into a literal sandland dream world is incredible.
