Since its release at the end of February my girlfriend and I have had a hard time putting Elden Ring down. Although it was one of the more frustrating FromSoft games she's played to date, she was determined to prove that she could handle everything they had to throw at her. This video wasn't just difficult to make because of the game's difficulty, we had a hard drive failure right in the middle of the project which lead to a lot of heartache and lost footage. Even still, we're happy to finally have a Made My Girlfriend Play Elden Ring video for you all, and hopefully you enjoy. Praise the sun!

Girlfriend sounds like the sort of person who chose her Pokémon based upon how round they are and then proceed to beat the game with them, now uses the same logic for every single game. They are absolutely the best players to help because they absolutely resist the obsessive need to min-max and just have fun while still being willing to learn things that don't sacrifice that.

So her tinfoil hat theory is actually correct. Many enemies and bosses are coded to react when you cast a spell or drink a health pot. There are other videos that show enemies dodge roll spamming when you cast spells, even when they aren’t aimed at them. The godskin enemies are basically hard coded to throw fire at you when you try to heal.
It’s called input reading and many enemies and bosses just start rolling the moment you knock and arrow or start casting a spell

This mechanic got me pissed when I was fighting margit, lol. I knew this was a thing since I played sekiro, but I really didn't expect my first boss to brutally punish me for healing.
I had a time with the golden knight boy in jail where I tested to see if he'd do his lunging thrust if I drank, even if I was considerably outside the attack's range.
It is coded that way.

9:20 She is actually correct, it's called Imput Reading, where the enemy AI reacts to your Input. It has been in the game since Dark Souls 2, maybe even in Dark souls 1. There is 2 major forms of this. Heal Catching, where they will do an animation faster than your animation to heal and punish you for trying to heal. They punish you more for this in Elden Ring, cause they time it to hit AFTER you drink the flask, so you lose your charge, AND more HP than before.
The other form that was sparse in the other games, but HEAVILY implimented not just in bosses but ALL, or nearly ALL enemies is Roll Catching. Where they time their attacks, and have attacks just long enough, where if you don't roll exactly when the game WANTS you to roll, the enemy will catch and kill you out of the roll.
That spot where she dodged all of the elden beasts attacks in quick succession is legitimately impressive.

The weapon is not bad , bleed is pretty broken and the weapon does a lot of poise damage too
The wheel's art is literally bleed building v100
Regardless of what everyone's said in the replies, that's still no meager feat. I mean I beat my first run (which I started on launch day, so arcane scaling wasn't a thing on a lot of them) with my samurai's initial equipment, which turned out to be perfect for the bleed build I wanted to run anyway.

"She was convinced that some of the bosses are just programmed to wait until you sip a flask and then attack" in a way, all of them are. All bosses and most enemies have one or two attacks they're programmed to use if they're idle whenever you sip. In all Souls games, too.
I’m not quite sure why people rag on it, I mean what do players do the moment they see a hollow stopping to chug a flask?
@@nickoliekeyov746 Most of them don't rag specifically on the reaction, but on the fact that it's done through input-reading. AKA the enemy AI knowing which button you pressed instead of reacting to the animation itself. And honestly I'm not sure why people rag on input reading either, it gives the AI a fighting chance and there are ways to circumvent it.
Shes right about the AI of enemies. I had to also reprogram myself to literally bait their attacks by mine knowing they react whenever i try to hit. Malenia would walk around, i hit air, she reacts instantly. I knew there and then what i had to expect. Horror lol

So "I wanted to ride horses together D:" might be the cutest thing I've heard this week. But I have a question: Did you guys go looking for any of the really infamously difficult optional bosses? And which did you kill?
I found a particularly difficult life stealing one, if that's the one you're asking about. I thought I was pretty thorough in my first playthrough, but I looked up a boss ranking and realized I missed like half the bosses. The game is just so big! My girlfriend did a lot of exploring, but ended up focusing on the main path once she found the capital. Hope this answers your question! 9:11 she's actually right on this, the enemies do have input reading coded in. You can really see this on Malenia when using a slow moving projectile like Ranni's Dark Moon. She'll dodge on the input of the spell, not the impact of it, *every single time*
Most enemies, really. They aren’t really coded to handle a tracking projectile with a travel time longer than half a second
Gotta love that around 0:30 the guy is like, aight bet lets go. And the girl is customizing her character. Reminds me of a friend who also gets stuck in character customization for literal hours.

9:20 enemies can input read, so she's right. Godskin and Dragon Sentinel throw fire at you when you use a toolbelt item.

So my boyfriend and I have been gamers since we were both little (love me my sly cooper) but his sister has never been into games mostly because they make her motion sick, but I was inspired by your videos to make her play breath of the wild and she really loves it and it’s so fun watching her learn and explore a game I’m an expert at. It gives me a new perspective on it
Enemies do actually do a specific attack most of the time when you attempt to sip, like when godskins throw fire ball or when the knights do long reach stab to catch you.
God the crucible knights. Fuck the crucible knights. I swear their greatswords have the same phantom range as lothric knight ss in ds3. Favorite enemies to fight. Such a fun challenge

yeah that's actually quite obvious, I normally waited out a bit before healing (to wait for the moment when enemy just did an attack that happen to not reach me), but whenever I heal, they start charging at me or range attack, immediately
Crucible knights do it too. Every time you try to heal they always do their long range attack.
Also with Margit phase 2. The instant you flask, he throws the daggers at you.
@@leesasuki When a boss is programmed to attack flask use, I end up using an attack opening for a flask instead. It makes the fight slower, it allows for completely safe flask use.
Also Genichiro in Sekiro used to do that. In his lightining phase he does the jump attack when you heal. I even ended up using it to kill him faster when I was 300 hours into the game ahahah
Whats funny is that she did a no armor pizza wheel run with no spirit summons on her first try
Just found this channel. If you don't already know there's a mod called Seamless Co-op that pretty much fixes all of the problems the base game's co-op has. Would love to see you two do that together, since having two people makes some things easier and other things more difficult. Cherry on top, everyone can ride horses. It also allows 4 people to play together and if the host dies you don't get sent back they just respawn. So if you want more people, I'd be up for joining because addicted isn't even a strong enough term for my feelings towards Elden Ring.

She just straight up looks like the better gamer between you two. As a programmer, I can tell you you don't need a degree to see that these enemies are input reading.

I confirmed for myself enemies do infact input read when i kept shooting arrows to a lion that couldnt reach me and It allways dodged just when i started pulling the bow
A big reason why elden ring isnt a 10/10. Could argue a 9.9 but definitely not a 10.
Also according to someone who was testing this, they dont input read, they animation read. Which still the same level of bs.
@@ditchfood8047 Yup. the only difference is that they dont react to buffered inputs (is that what you call it?), like when you heal during a roll, they react to teh flask animation not your button press.
But i dont think its really an issue. It just means you have to think about when and where to heal. No different from an aggresive boss. Hell i find healing in malenias second phase more difficult then in her first phase despite her input reading in phase 1. But its way easier to play around then her insane aggrasion in phase 2

WHAAT?! This has been an well known fact since DaS1, the enemies 10000% read your flask (or item rather) input to punish you, is not a tin foil hat theory. Exploiting that is what makes possible an ups all Gwyn run in DaS1.
I’m about three seconds into the video and just subscribed everything about this video seems tailored towards things I enjoy with the thumbnail artwork, that you’re playing elden ring/having her experience it and the katana zero ost to top it off I already know this is a channel im going to enjoy watching

9:10 Your GF wasn't wrong, they're programmed to do that. If you retreat quickly, they'll often predict if you're going to heal and will do some kind of thrust, jump or ranged attack to stop it. Not every strong foe does it but the two you showcased definitely do. You gotta outplay the bosses read on your moves.

I also respect the production value of this video and enjoyed it, but for blowing up on UA-cam it needs its own identity.

9:33 i mean, it is literally how they are programmed. There are times when bosses don't attack and if you try healing they will do something like this right away, thou they have moments where they will not do it and they are quite obvious.

I love that you played this on date night. I miss doing dungeon crawls with my partner (normally the only rpg option for 2 players). Noodling around like you guys would be a way more fun version of that.

I've come back to this video multiple times now, it's one of my favorite Elden Ring videos. Girl is so funny, the co-op section is delightful, the music choices are always fantastic and come in at the perfect time.

9:21 that is the case tho. The boss queues animations when you charge something in a random order, depending on how large the pool of attacks is. This has been known for a while. Plus queuing the charge of an attack is very common too.
