▢ 2 large eggs ▢ 3/4 cup sour cream (170g) ▢ 1/2 cup milk (120ml) ▢ 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (10ml) ▢ 1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour (210g) ▢ 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (60g) ▢ 1 cup granulated sugar (200g) ▢ 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder ▢ 1 teaspoon baking soda ▢ 3/4 teaspoon salt ▢ 2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips ▢ 1/2 cup vegetable oil (120ml) Instructions Preheat oven to 425F and line a muffin tin with papers. Sift the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar into a large bowl. Whisk together and set aside. In a separate bowl combine the eggs, vanilla, vegetable oil, sour cream, and milk then whisk together. Set aside about 1/3 cup of the chocolate chips for the muffin tops. Pour the wet into the dry and fold together using a spatula, mixing until almost combined. Sprinkle in the remaining chocolate chips and mix until the batter is just combined and the chocolate chips have been distributed. Fill the muffin papers to the top and sprinkle with the reserved chocolate chips. Bake at 425F for 6 minutes then reduce to 350F and continue baking for about 14 minutes or until the centers are set, a toothpick or skewer inserted in the center will come out clean.
I made them!! And they were so incredible. I put half of all the measurements and made it for 6 servings , (but it filled 7 cups). I don't have an oven and my microwave sparks, so I made them on stove in a pan. Since I'm a vegetarian, I made egg substitute as flax eggs. They tasted so so good, chocolatey, sweet, moist, fluffy and so decadent. You must try if you're thinking about making them.
Tried several muffins and this is the BEST recipe I tried so far. So soft and moist and so rich in chocolate and yet so easy to make! No butter milk needed is what I like the most as butter milk is hard to find in where I live. I changed sour cream to yogurt as it is expensive in my country 🤣 Thank you so much for the great recipe!
I tried this recipe today… replaced the sour cream with yogurt and the eggs (we don’t eat eggs in my house) with 1/4 cup apple sauce. It turned out exceptionally moist and delicious! Thank you for the recipe!
His husband and kids are the luckiest in the world 🌎 started watching John around 100k subs I knew he would be huge! Love you John from your no1 fan In Ireland 🇮🇪
How did u know he has a husband. I've been wondering and cant seem to see any post on his insta about his spouse just him and his kids. I'm not stalking and no hate but just curious.
great recipe, made it today and my family loved it. i topped it with whipped cream and it was even better. i didnt have sour cream tho, so instead i went ahead and added some thick vanilla yoghurt, about 120ml, skipped the vanilla extract n added less sugar. turned out great!! thank you
I always get anxious when he pushes his dishes away from him across the counter, I'm waiting for it to go off the edge 😄 It hasn't yet so that counter must be pretty wide!
I made these today but my batter wasn't as runny so I added slightly more milk and also white chocolate chips and dark ones, came out absolutely fluffy and soft and very yummy!! Thank you so much :)
I baked these last night substituting curd for yogurt and they turned out to be so good! I've never had this much success with a muffin recipe before! Thank you for the recipe!
This recipe is ridiculously amazing. It's super moist and so easy to make. I never knew yogurt helped to balance out the sweetness so well. This will be my recipe from now on. Thank you so much!
I tried out this recipe.. its great! I cut down the sugar by 20% and used a mixture of chopped walnuts and choc chips. The muffin texture is delicious and stays moist, not crumbly.
This is the best chocolate muffin recipe ever! I tried it out and it was amazing. I halved the recipe and used flax seeds instead of eggs for an eggless version, and added chopped almonds for crunch. I hope on making it again soon :-P
Thank you so much for this perfect recipe. I followed this recipe's instructions and baked the muffins with my kids today . I must say the muffins came out very soft, moist, and super delicious. Thank you so much for spreading some holiday cheer in our family. 🎄🧁🧑🎄
I am in Cape Town, South Africa and have just made your recipe. Delicious thank you John. My go to recipe now. I didn't have sour cream and used Buttermilk. Came out perfectly.
I made today ,and follow of your recipe but i changed the chocolate..instead of chocolate chips i replace nuts and sprinkle the chocolate on the top..the taste was so good ..thanks for sharing..l❤ve it..
Made this and this is the best muffin I ever had! Love it. Will use this recipe as from now. Its so moist and just melts in your mouth. Thank you for this! :)
I just make these and they taste amazing my brother who is a picky eater loved them i didnt have muffin pan so i made them in a bread pan i put a little oil and put powder cocoa on the oil in the pan so they dont stick and it work .thank you so much fir the recipe
Dear John I made this beauties for breakfast tomorrow to impress my Christmas guests. Wow they are scrumptious. I like you and your family a lot. Thanks. Soon I’ll get your book the digital copy. Happy holidays
Awesome!! Thanks to your video the consistency of my muffins have moved from frozen chewing gum to extremely soft! Didn't think that over mixing was the problem. Thank you!!
John my son is your biggest fan! We love watching your videos. These muffins are amazing!! My 7 year old helped and we had so much fun making these together. End result was pure deliciousness 😋
Wow, this recipe is amazing! So chocolaty and just the right amount of sweetness. I made it last week, ate 3 pieces and put the rest in the fridge to enjoy them later for the next few days. The muffins were still moist even after day 4! I don't have sour cream and used yogurt instead. But next time I'm going to make this again using sour cream.
Just made these using 1/2 cup monk fruit instead of sugar, seems about right. Used 6 large muffin tins and baked an extra 7 minutes to get a clean toothpick. All those chocolate chips make it extra luxurious to eat! Saving this recipe for sure ❤️
I tried the recipe this morning. Turned out great! Moist and delicious. I like low sugar muffins and reduced sugar to 130g, still taste good as the recipe calls for a generous amount of chocolate chips which give the right level of sweetness to the muffins.
I just made a recipe that had only baking soda and more chocolate and less flour but it blew my mind. The sour cream/yogurt/cream cheese addition is the BIZNISS.
i just did this muffin tdy and omg its literally the best chocolate muffin ever!!! the sour cream really added moisture to the muffin urgh! its my favourite now thank youu!!!
Hi John, you are an awesome baker , you’re my go to for recipes , you pay so much attention to detail which is a great help also , I bought your first book and love it. you refer so often to your mums baking so just curious to know was she a professional baker ? It seems you have inherited your love for baking from her
Could you maby do some sort of easter snack for easter? I was just wondering on what to make for it and wanted to know if you had any tips😁 PS: that also looks amazing🥰
You sure you got enough chocolate? Ha! I sometimes add 1/2 cup of brewed or instant coffee, cranberries, and/or top with mini marshmallows, or white choco chips, with the choco-chips!
Tried this last night for mother's day and these are my notes! What to expect: The cake was super duper moist and even after they cooled down they were still super moist and satisfying. The sugar amount was quite low for me so next time I redo this recipe I'd add around 1/4 cup of sugar more but this was probably because I didn't add chocolate chips to the batter but just on top. Modifications to the recipe: 1. I mixed cake flour and AP flour for this recipe. There was no exact measurement for cake flour (I just used up what little I had and added AP flour to the remaining to reach the supposed amount) 2. I forgot to add chocolate chips to the first batch so they were a bit less sweet but they were very chocolate-y. I added them on top and they were still very delicious for me 3. I baked my muffins at 225 oC for 10 min first and checked to see whether they were cooked. If they were still wet inside I added around 2-3 min before letting them cool down 4. I didn't have sour cream so I used mayonnaise! They were veryyyyyy helpful to making this moist and if you don't like mayo, don't worry you wouldn't notice the taste at all 5. I used a regular muffin tray with 12 holes but I was able to make 20 muffins since I didn't fill them all the way (around 80% since I still added chips on top). This will now be my favorite chocolate muffin recipe and I hope you try it too!!
20 seconds in and I already knew that the recipe will be nice when I heard you saying we'd have to sift the cocoa powder lol. It's reallyyyy lumpy so yes, sifting would absolutely be required!
When you’re having dinner and you come upstairs after and see that John’s posted a new video 10mins ago and you’re late: 😭😤😭😤😭😤 Btw: these look brilliant! 😍

Made them and they turned out excellent! I just had an issue with my oven, my muffins needed extra 10 min, so when I opened it at the time of the recipe they deflated. Also I think I'll use about 20-50g of less sugar 😁 but that's a personal preference. They combined very well with pecans! Gave some to an aunt and she really liked it 😊, thank you very much for the recipe 🙏🏻
