Hey Daniel and Rex! I'm so glad I found you guys! I've been sifting through your videos all day, and you guys sold me on the Laddie. I've been addicted to Lagavulin 16 for years, but it may have been dethroned as my go to bottle. I will be digging through your videos every time I look at a drink list from now on!
Well dang. I can't believe the Lagavulin was dethroned! I feel it's a Godfather kind of situation. Al Pacino may have taken over, but Marlon Brando is still the man.
I'm psyched for you guys and your new channel, will be awesome to see what whiskey and blends you come up with. Also just booked in for my first whiskey tasting session at my local whiskey store, should be interesting, i'll be sure to take notes.
Hi Daniel and Rex, I love watching your whisk(e)y reviews. Recently came across your new channel and have been binge watching all your videos since then. I'm a big single malt fan and would love to watch you review the Amrut Fusion Single Malt from India. Cheers guys. Keep up the good work.
Started to view your channel recently and I like your videos, I would like to recommend you to show the bottle you guys are testing on a close-up, so we can see the color and how the bottle looks like. It would be awesome to see a round tour of the vault :) keep good work
The Mooch and Daniel, love your work. Now from one Daniel to another you have introduced me to my new favorite whisky "The Laddie". Finally finished my post graduate degree and decided to treat myself to a nice blue bottle. My request for a future video is to get your hands on an Australian, if you can get your hands on it get a Blackgate No8 or Blackgate Caskstrength, amazing peated drops.
YES. my work here is done. I only have two Australian whisky bottles. One Starward, and one from Mount Uncle called "Big Black Cock". Might be hard to get that one featured on UA-cam ;-)
ok, I am reading the comments here and people are talking about a "new channel". What new channel? Great videos - thanks for taking the time and doing these reviews. Informative and entertaining.
While I most certainly have a rookie, unrefined palette, I went to a scotch tasting with my mom and some people she knew. The lineup included Tomatin 12, two different kinds of Macallan including double cask, Glenfiddich 14, and two others. It was a blind test. The bottles were in bags and numbered. The Macallan was a very very close second. The Tomatin won. It was a pretty much unanimous decision.
Could you guys do a video on tasting for beginners? I've recently gotten into whisky and scotch and you list off all these flavors you can taste and smell and I can only pick out one or two at best. Thanks guys keep up the good work!
One of the fastest ways is to get a deductive tasting chart and work your way through it seeing if it brings out new things! I'll do this on a video at some point! this is a great chart to start with: whiskeysmiths.com/whisky-deductive-tasting/
I recently picked up Tomatin 12 and was really surprised by it. Fantastic taste for a cheaper Scotch and I'd recommend it over other famous brands available at their starter level. For comparison of NC prices: Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Glenmorangie, and others of similar ilk are around $45-50 for their 10-12Y offerings while the Tomatin 12 is $35. I'd love to see a full review video of it in the future, I know it made an appearance but I've seen other reviews that prefer the 12Y to the 15Y and I think it deserves more love.
I see a lot of people order Glenfiddich or Glenlivet 12 on the rocks. I've tried it too. They are light and sweet, and with the addition of a cube or two it's pretty good still, but don't overdo it because it's way to watered down. I've also tried JWBL with a couple cubes... the smokiness is not lost with the ice, but other than sweet and smoky there isn't much else to taste with it that cold.
Toe-maa-tin lads; it'll sound (and possibly taste better!) if you say it that way :P I know what Daniel is saying about whiskies that are primarily made for blends, but you get the odd stonker. I'm enjoying a Caol Ila at the moment, and thats certainly full of character whilst being a big blend component in other whiskies. P.S. I wrote that before I saw you lads mention Caol Ila - great minds eh. ;)
love the videos! my go to whiskey is Pendleton BUT i am now open to trying new whisky. Right now I'm trying Glen Scotia 15yr and was wondering what your thoughts are of this one.
I see that this video is 4 years old but in my opinion the current Tomatin 12 is definitely like a two or three note whiskey but VERY good for the price. Very rich heavy malt with apple and pear. A heartier scotch than something like Glenmorangie.
So gents - what would you recommend to have in the "home" whisky vault in order to be a good sampling of the various expressions to share with the new aficionado. Let's say 5 or 10. Price should be reasonable but this helps for those of us in abc controlled states where we might need to order online. Enjoying the videos.
1-2 scotch, 1 irish, 1-2 bourbons, 1 rye. That would be a solid lineup. If I were buying it myself: Macallan 12 - pretty scotch Laphroig 10 - fuck you scotch Redbreast 12 - classic irish pot still Henry McKenna 10 - classic damn fine bourbon Angel's Envy Port Case - fancy finished bourbon Rittenhouse Rye - budget but lovely rye
thanks for piquing my interest in whisk(e)y. yesterday i went shopping at my local supermarket here in Seoul, while browsing their whisk(e)y selection i saw a Tomatin Legacy (dualchas-usa). i didn't buy anything because imported alcohol has been marked up a ridiculous amount, which brings me to my question; how is the Ballentine's line of whisky? are they worth the $80~$100 they go for here? it is easily the #1 selling and accessible brand here.
Holy cow. In the US, Ballentine's is $20 US a bottle for the generic blend. that import price is insane. As far as blends go, it's great, but not $100 great.
So not sure how this will go over - but in place of a nice glencarin glass, I started drinking my whiskey out of one of those beer tasting glasses that are shaped like tulip glasses. Not as much height to the glass, but better than the tumbler glasses. Thoughts?
There's no bad way to drink whiskey ;-) The only difference between that and the smaller glencairn is that the fumes and vapors won't be as focused. But that also means the alcohol won't be as aggressive on the nose. Best way to know? Try both side by side and pick your favorite. But in the meantime.... whisky!
Just made it through all of you videos. Now when I talk to my friends about whiskey they think I tell great stories and have a great depth of knowledge. For that Daniel I owe you big time. My request for a review would be Blood Oath Pact 3. I watched all your videos in reverse order and it was great seeing you guys from going from buzzed to sober in the 3 and 4 video shoots you did. Daniel, I noticed your bling has a red start now that was not there in the early videos. What is the story there? One last thing, I sent an email to you guys using the link on the UA-cam "about us" page. I assume that was a bad idea. Is there a better way to ask Daniel a question?
Hey Dan, have you tried any of the Cleveland whiskeys? Cleveland Black Reserve and the Christmas bourbon are good but I think their Underground line is amazing. Would you consider doing a review of of some of their bourbons?
I only have the black cherry, and I really dislike it. And I have a rule about doing whisky on the show that I dislike. I don't ;-) Better to keep it off camera than to shit on it in front of everyone.
If I sent you some of there other offerings would you consider an episode on them? I'm not affiliated with them but would love to see a whiskey named after my city on the Whiskey Vault
Mark Brown I think that's a rumor. It says nothing like that in the Scottish whiskey definition association rules. www.scotch-whisky.org.uk/media/12744/scotchwhiskyregguidance2009.pdf
I am OK with the 15, the 18 is bottled at higher proof and is much more interesting. And I think they all say on the bottle and/or box that the name rhymes with satin. So there you go. Re E150a, I am generally anti but you should search for videos of people adding it to water. A drop turns 16 oz of water rather dark. I bet I couldn't blind taste it but I have gotten pretty good at picking it out by color.
Looks like Rex is working on his beard to compete with Daniel. Daniel are you for or against adding e150 and do you prefer non chill filtered products?
I prefer non chill filtered, and I don't have a massive preference on the coloring. By default, I'd rather things just be what they are without being screwed with, but at the end of the day,..... if it tastes good it is good. Let's drink whisky
Fair Warning, Long Comment incoming. Hey Daniel and Rex, I hope your day is going well. I am one of those new subscribers that found you via the modern rogue and I must say what a great job you did in those videos. I am attempting to be a more informed whiskey enthusiast. I can pick out a few flavors and notes from whiskeys, but mostly I just say hings like smooth, sweet, bad, and good. In an effort to become more knowledgeable, or at least more eloquent, is there anything you recommend picking up that would help. Any books you recommend or perhaps some basic things to pick up such as a glencarrin glass? Also, feel free to list any non-beginner items that you recommend as I progress. I know that you have featured a whiskey tasting journal and scent kit on before, however I have watched about sixty of your videos in the past week and I can't remember which ones they were featured on. (Yes Rex, I don't have a life.) Also, I have a request. I get really pumped about some of the whiskeys you all talk about and go out to purchase them, only to find out that they are way more expensive than I planned. You have said the price range of the whiskeys in some of your videos before, but I would really appreciate it if you could make a conscious effort to give us a ballpark estimate of how much the whisky you are sipping on costs in all of your videos. Thank you very much for the channel and hopefully a response.

With a couple of ratty old hats, you two could recreate the famous Bugs Bunny Hillbilly square dancing cartoon where they beat each other through the whole thing!
Hey guys. Are you still going to have time to do eps that are 10min and above on here aswell as extra eps when you launch the new channel. I know you have plenty going on already hence the multi ep record to spread out over the week

Tomatin ( the pronunciation key said rhymes with Satan when i bought a 12 year old bottle back in 94... It also said it was used to make blends) it was awful then and under 18 bucks .. awful was an understatement.
So my brother just got me a bottle of whiskey. Now I'm grateful because I'm not an ungrateful ass like some. (Glares at the "Master" Mooch ;) But he got me one of the cheapest whiskeys I've ever see. Black Velvet. I haven't tried it yet. Want to do an episode on it so I can know what I'm getting in to?
I think you both have the reddit whiskey drama wrong. These are people who are crying out for a product that could exist, that they desire, and are getting spurned/denied. If I was the shot caller for that company I would release the product with a limited run with a 3-10x net profit increase. The croud would complain about the price instead but the bottles would sell out... because markets. Give it a year and the whole thing would blow over with a couple of people selling the whiskey at collectors increase.
You guys should try the Tomatin 12; IMO it's one of the best value scotch options (the dualchas isn't bad either).
Stuff of nightmares, rhymes with Satan
These episodes still hold up in 2019. Great stuff!
Fantastic video. Well done! We truly loved it.
Hey Daniel and Rex! I'm so glad I found you guys! I've been sifting through your videos all day, and you guys sold me on the Laddie. I'm tingling with anticipation. TINGLING!
Also, ever A/B compared chill filtered and non-chill filtered for flavor?
I haven't! We'll have to see if I can find a good example.
ok, I am reading the comments here and people are talking about a "new channel". What new channel? Great videos - thanks for taking the time and doing these reviews. Informative and entertaining.

Yeah, it's a fairly friendly whisky. So if you find a room full of people who like really, really smooth whisky, the Tomatin will take the cake.
Just tried it and I think its comparable to Glenlivet
Could you guys do a video on tasting for beginners? I've recently gotten into whisky and scotch and you list off all these flavors you can taste and smell and I can only pick out one or two at best. Thanks guys keep up the good work!

I would love you to try Ballechin 10. I enjoyed it and would love to see your opinion/review on it. Keep up the great work!
I think we have it! If I remember correctly, that's part of the Edradour line. I'll add it!
I recently picked up Tomatin 12 and was really surprised by it. Fantastic taste for a cheaper Scotch and I'd recommend it over other famous brands available at their starter level. Zachary Robbins the 12 is a top 5 sub $50 single malt for me. It's slept on for sure

Yeah, once you start adding water and ice, you need to start with a whisky that can stand up to it.
Toe-maa-tin lads; it'll sound (and possibly taste better!) if you say it that way :P

I'll see if we can get blood oath! I know we have two right now, but I'm not sure which two.
The red star signifies level 3 whisky sommelier ;-)
Also, I didn't get an email from you. try sending it to daniel at whiskymarketing.org
Tomatin sounds like it's a medicine. But, wasn't Wolfhound the one that recommends mixing it. Why not mix Tomatin and Wolfhound?
Still waiting on a cameo of that "mooch necklace" Daniel made for you Rex.....
It's happening tomorrow. And it has taken on a life of its own.
I predict a huge Mercedes log or a big clock like Flava Flave

Absolutely. It would be our pleasure. Address is here: whiskymarketing.org/about/contact-us/
Do you have any suggestions for shipping? Or would driving to Texas sometime this month or next be a better way to deliver whiskey?
I think I heard somewhere that you can't add colouring to scotch whisky if its more than 46% alcohol.
Mark Brown I think that's a rumor. It says nothing like that in the Scottish whiskey definition association rules. www.scotch-whisky.org.uk/media/12744/scotchwhiskyregguidance2009.pdf

Yeah, satin is what I heard originally too.
I searched the web looking to get some e150. I'll if we can do it on a video someday.
I had the 18yo this weekend and I thought it was fantastic. I haven't had the 15yo, so can not offer comparison.

Daniel, talking about India. do you have any Indian whisk(e)ys in the vault? I haven't tasted any of them myself, but they do sound interesting!
I do! I have 4 or 5 right now. We'll try some.
Hey guys.
Are you still going to have time to do eps that are 10min and above on here aswell as extra eps when you launch the new channel. I know you have plenty going on already hence the multi ep record to spread out over the week
Yeah, we'll continue this channel until I run out of whisky in the vault. then we'll see what the future holds.
Gentlemen - great idea for the distillery.
Create a whisky called "Old Jimmy Leg" and have it be a new-make spirit with a crap-ton (standard crap ton, not metric) of caramel coloring. Maybe even put a deer head on the bottle.
God I crack myself up.
Hey Daniel, how accurate is the database for the Whisk(e)y Vault and your wishlist? No real reason. It's obviously just curiosity.... ;)
After I update it this morning, it will be 100% accurate on what we have. The wish list is all wrong ;-)
Wizard Academy Nice! I figured the wishlist was wrong bc you have some that are in the database. Any chance you could update that as well? I was helping my grandfather move last weekend and found his private whiskey collection (grandpa knows good whiskey!). He doesn't really drink anymore so I managed to mooch it from him and boy were there some gems! I'd like to send one he had doubles or triples of but want to make sure it's something you don't already have first. Or a wishlist one if I got it.
At risk of ruining any chance I'll ever have to see the whisk(e)y vault in person, Rex is the soaring eagle to Daniel's tiny birdie. Mooch to new heights Rex, mooch to new heights...
Well damn.....
Wizard Academy Short or not, you're still the beautiful bearded bastard of whiskydom Daniel, I just gotta play both sides for that sample of the Fitzgerald. Must. Have. The. Preciousssssssss
+Wizard Academy Could you guys try the dewars white label.
I'll add it to the list!
review of John J Bowman Single Barrel? One of the best under $50 bourbons around
I'll try to find one!
Come on guys!!! do all the arran finishings in one episode.
Dear Daniel Sir,
I have not scoured the comments to see if someone else has brought this topic, nor have I nerdily (sp?) rewatched all videos or noted each each episode’s unique characteristics, but... is this the first episode where you did not wear a black shirt?
- Drinking Whiskey in Milwaukee
I mixed it up earlier in the history of this channel. But I've been wearing only black shirts and jeans for over a year now.
Are there any whiskey events in Austin for tge F1 race?
We will offer the whisky vault training (1.5 hours each) on a per/person basis! austinwhiskyvault.com/
Can you do more Dalmore videos plz, the Dalmore 15 video was so funny😂😂
Only since you're twisting our arms about it ;-)
try a blend of Johnnie walker red and buffalo trace!
Hell yes. done.
I recommend either 50/50 or a 2/3 buffalo to 1/3 johnnie
Tomatin Legacy, in Europe a well reviewed (see UA-cam..) whisky, for more than a reasonble price!
When does the new channel start?
Soon!
Where does batman go to the bathroom? The batroom.
Who's the guy on the left, where's Daniel and his black shirt?
I know. I forgot to do a load of laundry and ran out ;-)
Tomatin ( the pronunciation key said rhymes with Satan when i bought a 12 year old bottle back in 94... It also said it was used to make blends) it was awful then and under 18 bucks .. awful was an understatement.
What about "whiskey stones?
Yes, but in my experience here in Texas, they don't keep it cold for long when it's 100F outside.
is it toe mat in or toe ma tin?
The label says "To MA tin, rhymes with Satin. But I've heard other scotch friends of mine call it toe ma tin
It's like how you would pronounce tomato in the UK so to rhyming with paw and matin rhyming with Satin with no emphasis on any syllable.
So guys.. How about that Highland Park Sigurd I see standing around every episode as a next review? \ò/
I know. Keep it quite. I don't think Rex has noticed it yet.
xD
i have been trying to follow your blends minus your godzilla blend. and wow you guys are on.
Thanks!
$60 usd now.
Do you know any websites for buying whiskey in Europe where the whiskey costs more than the fucking delivery?
Unfortunately, no. But shipping from Master of Malt is almost flat, so the more you order, the more proportionate the shipping is.
Oh man, that is definitely cheap ;-) I haven't tried it yet, but maybe we should. For science.
I love you, Daniel, but collared shirts don't do you justice.
What?!? I'm a hotty in whatever I wear, sir. Take it back!
Hahaha. I'm just saying, as one hetero man to another, v-necks are more your style. The collar brings out your inner Backyard Grillin Dad lool
Want to hear a joke about construction? I'm still working on it.
Hine
I think you both have the reddit whiskey drama wrong. These are people who are crying out for a product that could exist, that they desire, and are getting spurned/denied. If I was the shot caller for that company I would release the product with a limited run with a 3-10x net profit increase. The croud would complain about the price instead but the bottles would sell out... because markets. Give it a year and the whole thing would blow over with a couple of people selling the whiskey at collectors increase.
Seems like you two clowns didn’t get the chocolate note.
