Whiskey Vault Ep: 111 Glendronach Peated Scotch Review/Tasting with Glendronach Original Cameo

  • An episode of The Whisk(e)y Vault hosted at Whisky Marketing School in Austin, TX.
    Today we do a review/tasting of Glendronach Peated Scotch from the Glendronach Distillery. We also try the Glendronach Original and somehow Buffalo Trace makes a short appearance.
    BTW, I said Glen means river. Glen means a small valley with a river in it. It's the location of most rivers in Scotland. So "Glen" "Dronach" would mean a small valley with the Dronach river running through it.
    Also. It's Richard Patterson. Not Roger Patterson. let's just say I was tired and my brain was hazy. Yeah. Let's blame it on that.

    Glen doesn't mean river, it means valley, like a river valley. Rivers usually run through glens, but not all glens have rivers in them.

      Glen = a narrow valley

    • @donna30044

      A dell is valley; a glen is an isolated, narrow valley. All glens are dells, but not all dells are glens.
      A burn is a river. GlenDronach Burn is the river in the Dronach glen.

    Hi Gents! 100+ episodes and getting better and better!
    REALLY appreciate more details about the taste/smell, etc of the whisky's and for reading my comment in one of the episodes.
    I have watched y'all from the beginning and it seems that with each episode, your beards have gotten longer and longer and here it comes - a dare.
    Daniel, what would you give Rex to shave his beard??
    Rex, what would give Daniel, if he were to shave his beard??
    OR, perhaps, shave a beard and raise you a Man-Bun?
    Discuss.
    Keep on, keep'n on!

    Loving the info, keep it coming. It's the little tidbits like the Kentucky Chew that satisfy my inner nerd.
    Most importantly, we don't care about ratings here. It's all about the whiskey, The Somm and The Mooch... preferably in that order.

    I always chew my whiskey, that's what our Whiskey and GM and my store told me I should do. Really does give out more flavor.

    Hey Rex and Daniel! First of all Love the show! A group of friends and I have fallen in love with your videos and have basically binged them all. We are all new to whisky and want to explore it more, So I've decided to host a whisky tasting night. I've decided to go with 4 whiskys and some snacks so my question is. What whiskys would you recommend and what food do you think would go well with it. Thank you for your answer and make sure to open the whisky marketing school in Australia so I can do it :). keep it up and may your crazy stay this side of legal!

      That's awesome! Thanks, Troy. Tastings are always more fun if you have a general theme. All Bourbon, all scotch, pre prohibition brands, wine finished whisky, etc. Or one from each region. I'd start with that one for the first. One Irish, one scotch, one bourbon, one rye. And if it was up to me, it would be RedBreast (classic pot still), Bunnahabhain 12 or Highland Park 12yr, Buffalo Trace or Basil Hayden, and Old Overholt or Bulliet Rye.
      For food, go plain while drinking. Save the overly flavored or seasoned stuff for after. It will totally change the way everything tastes.

    I love that Daniel didn't object to Rex calling him a hobbit, only that Rex didn't follow LOTR canon by suggesting hobbits have levels.

    got to your channel through modern rogue and been loving watching your videos on whisk(e)ys wondering if you guys have done a review on any canadian whiskies? I recently bought one called "Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye." There was a huge hype about this one and finally got my hands on one. I like it quite a lot, but I would like to know what you guys think of it!
    Great job with the vids though! Keep up the great work!

    I have a request in which to see the way something would react and change. Any whisk(e)y that you feel this would work best with. Done four ways being neat, chilled, w/ water and chilled w/ water. To be clear I'm not saying with ice either but with whiskey stones or bullets or what have you.

    Daniel have you ever tried adding saline (salt water) to whisky. As you may know salt is a favour enhancer and is currently popular with mixologists. What are your thoughts on using it for whisky tasting?

    Have gone back and binge watched all the videos. At what point do you feel you get diminished returns tasting because your tongue is toast? I've had fights of 5 seem like too much and prefer 3 most times. Based on Rex's shirt and all the bottles piled up on the barrel behind him it would appear you done way more than 5 at times. Are you giving the whisky it's due?

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 років тому

      Man, if you're actually drinking the entire glass, I'd say 4+ is too far in. But if you're simply taking 2 or 3 sips, then moving on, you can get a lot further. When Rex and I do tastings, we rarely finish the glass until after the videos are all over. If you looked to Rex's left (off camera) you would see 3 or 4 whisky glasses with whisky in them that he collects as we go.
      In professional tastings, people will often spit out the whisky without swallowing to allow themselves to go through dozens of tastings at a time.

    so I turned 19 a few months back here in canada and I was given a bottle of Auchentoshan 12 for my birthday, what would you recommend I get next? should I try a bourbon?

    • @Gateau
      @Gateau 7 років тому +1

      I see D&R haven't responded back, but I would imagine them saying the following:
      "There are literally thousands of whiskys out there and everyone's taste is different so you should try new whiskys and find what you like."
      So being a month in, I'm sure you probably are finding out your flavor profile and are watching Daniel and Rex's reviews of these flavor profiles. Also, I would personally recommend you try a bourbon. Try everything, you may discover you like something that you never have before. I never liked bourbon because my first one was Maker's Mark, but it took me a long time but I discovered I like bourbon a lot after buffalo trace - it's just the flavor profiles that vary greatly between companies.

      Texas is similar. Over 38C average in the summer with high humidity. My recommendation is to know that you're about to chill it and dilute it and choose a whisky accordingly. Preferably something that has a serious heft and kick to it.

      Wizard Academy given that their seems to be more experimentation with types of wood (native wood), wine casks and beer casks do you think you could do some expressions of the like, side by side. So Scotch finished in Sauterne cask, Cognac, Pinot etc.... then perhaps world Whiskey in the same or similar casks in different episodes?

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 років тому

      We've gone through a few variations of that with the Glenfiddich lasanta and quinta ruban. a few episodes back. we'll keep trying things!

      Wizard Academy ...um, do you mean Glenmorangie? I'm a little more interested in things like Bruichladdich 16yo Sauternes v Arran v BenRaich v Glenlivet.
      Then may be port casks done by new world distilleries.

      hahahaha, yes. I mean Glenmorangie. I've also got the Glenfiddich IPA and Port Finish in front of me right now. I was drinking it while replying, and obviously I have a one track mind.
      Yes! Kilchoman has become king of the finish. Maybe Rex and I will try out some of these combos in the new channel as well!
