    1. Derek Plymesser - "MOOCHING FROM DAD"
I like Mark Blease's idea below of best mooch story. On my 21st birthday my father and I were trying some of his whiskey's he had been amassing throughout the years. He didn't know that I had previously drank alcohol and was already a fan of a few different whiskeys. In order to try all of the whisky's he had I continued to play dumb. He would pour a little dram of Glenfiddich 12 and ask "Do you get any hints of pears and fresh fruit?" or pour a dram of Johnnie walker black and ask if I could taste the peat. I would reply no, but in actuality I did, I was playing dumb to get him riled up and pour more. I continued to irritate my father as he poured us glass after glass of whisky in his attempt to bond and appreciate the whiskys and by the end of about 4+ hours of watching movies and sipping whisky my father was drunk as all hell. I myself still had a couple unfinished glasses and was pretty intoxicated. The next night I had no sign of a hangover and my father was writhing in pain all day. I did in fact use my mooch power for evil, but it's alright because it broadened my whisky horizons.

    2. apatino - "THE HELPFUL MOOCH"
I feel like the best way to spread this whisk(e)y love is to give it to a subscriber and fan who could mingle and see y'all personally. Off the top of my head, I don't know, maybe a local? Not only do you save on shipping but you could hang out and share some mutual goodies. And it so happens to be that I am local. I would be willing to drink this generous pour for the community. I would be willing to offer myself up as tribute. I can be by this week? 🤷🏼‍♂️Cheers! 😁

    3. password 789 - "MOOCHING FOR A LIVING"
So to add to the growing page of mooch stories I worked a winter at a ski resort that served the the mega rich and was located in a dry state. one of my main jobs was to suggest pairings for dinners and what not. but of course in order to do that I had to have tasted these whiskey, wines, gins ect. so I got to spend the whole winter drinking $500-$15000 a bottle drinks

    4. Bryan Lushbough - "GRANDPA'S REVENGE"
This mooch story comes courtesy my childhood friend Jake, his father, and his grandfather. Jake's grandfather was a whiskey fiend, an old fashioned type with a huge hardwood bar in the den of his house. When both he and I were back in our hometown and hanging out at his family's home, Jake's dad would ask to let us sample some of his grandfather's collection to "bond". And bond we did. However, Jake's dad insisted he always take his whiskey with some water, an ideology that Jake took a hold of. This aggravated Grandpa John to no end. Fast forward a couple of years to Jake's wedding. His grandfather, after revealing a bottle of Macallan 21 as a gift to Jake, he offered to pour Jake, his dad, and me a glass to celebrate. After some generous pours, and before handing out the glasses, he remarked, "You two like yours with water right?" and to their (and my) horror, ran their glasses under the tap from the sink behind the bar... After the tears subsided, he revealed he had filled an old Macallan bottle with Jack....He leaned down behind the bar and produced the genuine bottle to give to Jake. That was the best drink I've ever had, but Grandpa John got to enjoy the sweet taste of mooch comeuppance.

    5. Albert -"THE CUBAN CIGAR MOOCH"
Mooch stories, great! Most of the time I'm the Daniel kind of guy instead of the Rex kind of guy. I didn't exactely mooch whisky, but got something else and whisky was involved... I had invited two friends over to for a nice bbq with some pulled pork. We started off with some normal beers, later I got some belgian specialty beers until we escelated to gin cocktails. After a short water break and some story telling I couldn't resist to take out some scotch and let my friends taste some. So I got some Spice tree and Benromach 10. That night I also proposed to go to Scotland in the summer and that trip is already booked now. I'm stoked to try some whisky from the source! When we were sitting outside a friend said that the whisky would be great with a cigar... So naturally I went looking in for my fathers stash and after a while I found a couple and took one. It was amazing. The next day I wanted to order a new one to replace it with but I couldn't find anything of that brand. So I ordered another good cuban, gave it to him and told what happend. He was very amused and told me that he got that cigar about 25 years ago from the father of my mom when they got married. He didn't know he still had some left and thanked me for quality control.
Now go vote for your favorite Mooch story in the poll embedded in the video!

We had the Asyla at a Whiskey Dinner last year and served it with She Crab Soup and it cut through the creaminess of the soup perfectly, had Hedonism with double cut lamb chops marinated in Compass Box Great Street and finished off the dinner with Compass Box Orangie and dessert of drak chocolate whisky sauce over raisen bread pudding. This year we will be featuring Glenmorangie 10 yr, 12 year port finish and 12 ye Nector D'Or. Glasser vacations in Pawleys Island, SC.

We have them first Saturday of Decembers. You need to add a class for whisky and food pairings, do American Food and American Whiskey, brisket and baked beans. Then do Scotch Whisky and Fine Dining. That way you can show whisky goes with everything. Apertif whiskey, to After Dinner Whisky.

Thanks for the Asyla review! I'd just like to add on to my previous statement of "more Rex can only be a good thing", with "only if there's just as much Daniel!" I just love the amount of whisky knowledge and info you bring to the table.
Oh and great job bringing back 'dolphin smooth'. Now to add some 'mouth feel' and 'boosh' in the mix!

Just wanted to throw out there that dolphins aren't really smooth... they look smooth however they are almost rough. love y'alls show though, you are always good for a laugh and some knowledge. I've been drinking whiskey for a few years but haven't experienced it till learning how to while watching the modern rouge. Thanks for what y'all do and keep it up.

I've seen Ralfy put a couple of drops of another expression from the same distillery (so that its still a single malt) and add it to an average whisky, to bring it out more and help it along. It may be whats happening here when you lads poured the Peat Monster side by side to the Asyla.

I got to your channel from modern rogue. Binged almost all your content and love the reviews? Can you get your hands on a bottle of Akashi white oak? Id be interested to see what flavours you find in it. I got a strong taste of the skin of an apple. not the actual flesh

    • @WhiskeyVault

I'll see if I can find Akashi. Thanks for watching!
My favorite part of this comment is that you ended "love the reviews' with a question mark :-)

When you call a whiskey "too pretty," can you still consider it a good whiskey? Is "too nice" bad, or just not your preference? (I would assume the answer is "drink what you like" but, I'm curious if you consider easier to drink whiskeys lesser than other whiskeys)

    • @FightStealDrink
      @FightStealDrink 7 років тому +1

That's just a preference. "Too pretty" usually means that it's very sweet without much complexity. Which is exactly what some other people prefer. =)

In the whisky world, is peat and smoke referencing the same flavour? I am not particularly a fan of peated whisky and thus have only tasted a couple (Laphroaig 10 and Lagavulin 8) however, i do enjoy the taste and smell of smoke. Is there a whisky that has a true smokey profile? Not peat or bbq or iodine but smoke?
    Cheers guys

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 років тому

In theory, yes Peat and Smoke are the same thing when people are describing flavors. There are those who swear they say they can taste the fact that water ran through peat before it was made even without the smoke. But I find that claim a bit dubious.
For more of a bbq approach, look for some US smoked malts like Colkegan or Whiskey Del Bac

what are your thoughts on other spirits aged in whiskey barrels? there's a distillery in upstate SC that has a gin they age in their used bourbon barrels and i thought it was interesting to be able to try the bourbon, the unaged gin, and the bourbon barrel aged gin.

    • @WhiskeyVault

Spilling mooched whisky, especially Compass Box... I believe that's one of the cardinal mooching sins. Falls right under Buying whisky and Giving away own wisky.

    • @redgrif51

Is Rex such a masterful mooch that he's convinced you to take his punishment, Daniel?
Or... did Rex sneak on to the Vault's official channel posing as Daniel so there is a written record of Daniel volunteering to take said punishment?
Daniel, you should do the flogging; Rex is the offender. The power of the necklace has gone to his head.
      LoL

How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
A letter of marque came from the king
To the scummiest vessel I've ever seen
