Comparing the external features of the 2zz-ge and 1zz-fe engines. Both are 1.8-liter four-cylinder engines that were offered in vehicles like the Corolla, Matrix, Celica, MR2 Spyder, and Pontiac Vibe. They have many obvious differences including the Yamaha-designed cylinder head, intake manifold, ignition coils, fuel injectors, breather hoses, oil control valves, alternator, starter, belt tensioner, oil filter, crankcase breather, water pump, throttle body, and intake tube or MAF tube.
Thank you for this video really needed this specific information for a build
Hi doing a timing cover gasket on my 2zz Celica. They are known to leak as you are aware. Where do I put RTV paste? I heard there are 5 spots where a spot of RTV is to be used (where head meets block etc). Thanks
Wherever you see two surfaces coming together, with slightly unequal elevation, apply rtv.
EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED THANKS!
Thank you for watching and for commenting.
When measuring the diameter of throttle body, or the induction pipes, u have to measure frm inside not outside
False. You measure hoses from inside but tubes and pipes from outside.
Anyway you can measure whatever you want anyway that you want just be prepared for things to not fit if you measure wrong.
@@Merryfrankster_ he is not false.. it all depends what you're measuring for..if it's for specs, then you measured wrong, as the butterfly diameter gives the true size as well as the ID of the TBs mating surface.. so you did not measure correctly according to the TBs specifications
Hi Frank, maybe a silly question but I wonder whether the Power Enterprise Rotrex supercharger kit, like you have on your 1ZZ car, will also fit on a 2ZZ engine. Would that work or would it interfere with the 2ZZ block somehow?
It should fit. It goes in the same position as a P/S pump on a Celica. If I have some time I will test fit it.
I believe starters are compatible because many websites list a starter that fits both 1zz and 2zz. Well at least I hope, since I pulled a 1zz starter in case the one on my 2zz fails.
Video is helpful since it's much easier to find 1zz at the junk yard for us 2zz owners.
Thank you for watching.
Thanks for sahring

@@Merryfrankster_ Hey i was thinking about mounting a 2Zz in my 74 Corolla ! now the 74 ins rear wheel drive. How the engine mount you think i know it would be ll custom
@@user-pd9vm9ts1o I don't know any details of adapting this transverse engine to a longitudinal application. Personally if I were swapping I would look at a longitudinal V6 like the 5vz-fe.
Actually early 1zz have steel tubular intake manifolds
Thank you for watching and for commenting.
Hey frank I need to know if a 1zz to 2zz coolant hose are different am doing a swap on a matrix and I still have like 3 spot open on the 2zz coolant pipe do I need to cap them on any idea
There is a difference in the coolant system in the Matrix/Corolla. 1zz uses a coolant overflow tank (non-pressurized). 2zz uses a pressurized coolant expansion tank. If you convert it to a overflow system you will need to plug or cap some of the passages. I would suggest that you research what others do on the Corolla/Matrix forums.
Intake manifolds inter changeable?
No. Different bolt pattern. Would require adapter.
What’s the actual 2zz oil filter? Toyota wouldn’t believe me when I needed a F1, they gave me F2. Were they right? And also what are the size dimension from the 2zz starter to the 1zz starter?
Yes the 2zz filter is different from the 1zz it is slightly longer but you can use either one. Also the starters are interchangeable I believe.
1zz is evolution of 4age .Just same as 4age but little faster 2zz is nothing but overrated crap ,that is harder to modify when it comes to turbo builds .Block and crankshaft are better in 1zz.99% celica turbo builds that you gonna see are GT (1zz) . And yeah if 2zz is that good? Why it isn't stock in MR-S . Just look even at the torque . 1zz is even better in that field .GT celica is lighter too . So if you like track or touge , go with 1zz GT . If you like to be "Straight road racing" guy go with 2zz , even if it's not much faster ,like 1 sec . I'm not even triggered or anything , because I typed all this .I'am just sick of illiterate 'car' people
Do the Corollas get the same 1zz and 2zz engines as the Spyders? Like are the mounts different?
2zz mounting bracket is different from 1zz mounting bracket.
Which one is more reliable between 1.8 1ZZ-FE Avensis or 1.8 2ZZ-GE Corolla?
They both have their issues but probably the 1zzfe. Have owned both
@@atom608 Already bought a car - Astra G Z16SE.
1zz fe will basically run forever if you run it nicely and keep with maintenance the 2zz is the same but has small oil starve issues with high rpm sharp turning
is this a fairly straightforward engine swap? obviously need the harness and ecu. But can you use the 1zz transmission? Are the motor mounts & locations the same between the two? And can you use the original axles or are custom axles needed? Also, As far as exhaust goes is there some bolt on system or do you need to go full custom bent etc? Also are there any clearance/fitment issues? Thanks :)
You need a simple bracket adapter for the engine mount. You can use the original transmission and the mounts remain the same. The axles are the same. You re-use the original engine harness with just a handful of wires modified. The header exhaust flange is different so you cannot re-use, but there are a few after-market headers available. There are no clearance issues.
@@Merryfrankster_ wow thanks for the quick and detailed reply! Appreciate it! I never thought you could use the 1zz harness either. What ECU do you use?
@@YouLikeToast you must use an ECU from a 2000-2002 Celica GTS - the part numbers in in 20080, 20081, or 20082. There is a lot of very detailed info on doing this swap, search for it on Spyderchat.com or NewCelica.org
@@Merryfrankster_ thank you again for the information. I really appreciate it.
Do you know if these engines have a conversion kit for rwd? I want to put one in my 72 dart.
I know it's been done but there is no conversion kit you have to fabricate everything yourself. Personally I would go with a different engine. This engine does not have the oomph to pull a 72 dart. MAYBE YOU ARE THINKING OF A 2JZ which is a inline 6 for rwd.
@@Merryfrankster_ i would turbo it to give it a bit more kick. The corolla is 2500 pounds while the dart is 3500. The original engine made around 90 hp.
@@2xXhunterXx Honestly I feel like you are barking up the wrong tree. a- 2zz turbo is not a reliable setup. Oil pump and bearings are fragile and fail all the time. b,. It does not make any low end torque whether NA or turbo. c. There are no transmission adapters available. 2JZ is a bulletproof engine with lots of transmission adapter support. Do whatever you want, but don't come back here crying.
@Merryfrankster_ ahh ok thanks i was just asking... since i dont want a race car, just a daily commuter for my sibling ,but tanks for your time.
Hey Chief, do you know if the exhaust headers for both the 1ZZ and 2ZZ are the same? looking to get a set of performance headers for my 1ZZ but can only find 2ZZ ones. Thank you
No, they are not. The exhaust flange is different.
What a the powerful engine among of it 2zzGE and 1zz
And what a the advantage one's of it
Definitely the 2zz produces more power, but at high rpm only (6000 to 8000rpm). For city driving, you would never know the difference.
Thx u for explaining 😬
Thanks for watching.
can you swap a 1zz engine for 2zz engine and would it fit in the engine bay?
Yes it is a direct fit. Depending on the chassis, ou may need a simple adapter for the motor mount on the engine side.
1zz is evolution of 4age .Just same as 4age but little faster 2zz is nothing but overrated crap ,that is harder to modify when it comes to turbo builds .Block and crankshaft are better in 1zz.99% celica turbo builds that you gonna see are GT (1zz) . Ola mestre gostava de saber se é possível fazer a troca do motor 1zz para motor de 1 nz
Sure, almost direct fit. But why? 2zr is a better choice.
What modifications do I need to make to put a 1zz engine in a Toyota GTS chassis with a 2zz engine?
Off the top of my head you need a compatible ECU - i.e. from a 1zz Celica - a motor mount adapter, the 1zz throttle body and intake plenum, the1zz injectors, the 1zz coils (because they are different), a 1zz exhaust, and make it fit with your downpipe, and that should be it I think.
@@Merryfrankster_ The automatic transmission of the 2zz fits well in the 1zz engine
@@robertomartinez8071 sorry I don't know any details about the A/T. I didn't even know that there was a different A/T transmission for the 2zz. To be honest I don't know anything about it.
Hello and thank you for the video.
I have a 4zz-fe corolla motor in my Toyota Runx 140i RS and would like to do an engine swop to the 1zz-fe motor. I heard theres not much difference between the two.
What will I need to change/do the swop? isit plug and play ?
Sorry that we do not have this engine in our geographic market. I have never seen one and I know absolutely nothing about it.
is that the MR2 1ZZ dipstick on the 2ZZ?
I think that is just a repurposed 1zz dipstick.
Hey man, do you know if the crankshaft pulleys are the same?
They are not the same. The 2zz is lighter. But they are interchangeable
@@Merryfrankster_ so it would work as a stopgap, because I can find one where I live 😭

Question does the 1zzfe and 2zzge share the same belt tensioner? I keep seeing people say the arm is diffrent length but on the toyota parts oem website it says it works for both that its the same part for both gt n gts.
Are they the same or different
The belt tensioners are different. They cannot be interchanged. Period.
5:09
How are you guys I have a question I have a celica gt 1zz and I bought the 2 zz gts with harness and wiring with the ecu what parts or pieces do I have to change in my car for the engine to work and work
If you have the ECU and harness, it should be plug and play. Just install the engine and plug it in.
Hi, is there a difference between the length of the throttle cable of both engines? I swaped the aluminum gas pedal of a Celica GT-S to a GT, and now in when I put the car on D, it idles faster, and when I switch to R, it reverses faster, what it could be?
You can check the tension in the cable between the cable bracket on the throttle body and the butterfly valve cam . If necessay, meaning if it is holding the buttefly open, you can adjust it the cable tension by loosening the jam nut then turning the adjustment nut. But more than likely the issue is on the pedal side.
can the 2zz intake manifold fit in 1zz?
No, not unless you fabricate some adapter, or modify it. But it probably wouldn't make much difference anyway, the 1zz intake ports are the problem.
So which is better lol?
2zz is more performance oriented but they are both ok engines
U forgot the header flanges
Sorry nobody's perfect. LOL. Glad you caught that.
I have a celica 2000 1 zz and I want to put a 2 zz in it the wiring and support are the same or what things do I have to modify
For wiring 2zz into 1zz celica just add the lift wires. All other wiring stays the same.
Hey mate, do you know if the 2zz headers fit on a 1zz engine
No, they do not. The flange is different.
Very cool. I have 208k miles on a 2006 Matrix with 1ZZ engine. Same base engine as found in the Baby Lotus.

Can you put the 2zz-ge head on a 1zz-fe block?
No
Have toyota voltz uses 2ZZGE also have see one using 1zz Which one is the best to use
They are both good engines. With earlier model 1zz you have to be careful about oil consumption. With 2zz you have to be careful about valvetrain issues. 2zz is more sporty.
Any video on how to make a 1zz faster?
You mean like the Rotrex supercharger video for my 1zz?
Where is the best place to get parts for the 2zz
Depends on part. Toyota dealer for engine parts. Monkeywrench Racing for performance parts. Denso and Aisin parts from auto parts dealer. What parts are you looking for.
2zz legendary
What about the fuel rail?
fuel rail from a FE (FRONT ENGINE) vehicle points the opposite way from RE (REAR ENGINE) vebut they are the same fuel rail in dimension. The Location of the inlet port is opposite end.
Is the 1zz same in all cars that used them?
Short answer no. There are differences based on year and model. Celica and MR2 were the same for 00-02. This topic is covered in detail in forums for these vehicles. You should be able to find the answer to your question with a quick search. If you have any specific question then feel free to follow up.

Hi Frank is it possible to put 2zz on Corolla e120 9th gen 2002-2005 ?
Yes, doesn't this car have a 2zz option from factory?
Yeah, from 05-10, you could get the XRS trim with a 2zz.
I’m actually about to take this dive since I can’t find an XRS near me. Are there any major concerns for moving from the 1zz to 2zz?
@@karisssa You will have to figure out some details for wiring the ecu and the dash. You might want to look at the wiring for a 2003-2004 2zz Matrix it might be more similar to your 2002 Corolla. The 2005and later ECU's have Canbus serial netwrok which I don't think you have in your car.
Are the bellhousings the same?
If you are asking about the bolt pattern yes. For any other details very likely yes. What is it exactly that you want to know, "are the bell housings the same?" Is a vague question.l that strictly speaking can only be answered "no" because there may be some small inconsequential differences and they may have different part number depending where were they sourced and assembled.
What i mean is will the 1zz gearbox bolt onto the 2zz and will the dell pins align
@@Manuqtix.Manuqtix yes definitely
@@Manuqtix.Manuqtix Yeah, many who do the 1zz to 2zz swap keep their old (5-speed) transmission due to lack of funds or maybe couldn't buy it together, and you can swap in the 6-speed later.
What about the computer can I use the 1zz computer
For swap you need computer from 2000-2002 celica 2zz it is compatible with mr2 spyder with minor re-wiring. See my video for how.
Me pregunto, si la caja de velocidades del 2zz emboca en el 1zz ??
yes, the gearbox bolts on to both 1zz and 2zz engines, but, depending on what car you put it in, you may have to modify the gear selection mechanism to work with your car's shifter cables..
@@Merryfrankster_ mi auto es un Toyota Corolla del año 1999, crees que una vez acoplada al motor entre en el vano motor?
Pienso usar el mismo sistema de palanca de cambios y cables que trae mi auto de fábrica, crees que funcione?
I don't know if it is a direct fit of the gear selection mechanism, but I am sure there is a way to make it work. There are two types of 6-speed C60 trans: The celica has the cables attached to the gear selector at the front side of the car, toward the radiator. The Matrix has the cables attached at the rear, toward the cabin. You can modify the Celica trans to attach from the rear. The Matrix trans is harder to modify to attach from the front but it can be done. Look at the trans in your corolla. Look at the trans you have purchased or you are planning to purchase. Which side to the cables attached. You are asking theoretical questions without any reference to practical reality. You cannot do a swap like this. @@Qwerty93884
