A data point to show how far the Corolla has come… a brand new Corolla with the 2.0 does 0-60 in about 8 seconds and gets over 40 MPG. 20 years ago that would have been absurd.
Hello Mr Grumpy, This John Chan the fisherman. Great Video!! You are no BS. and accurate. Thanks for making this video. Which Toyota engine can you get 500K miles if you change the oil every 7500 miles with full synthetic?
The current 1.8 is a great engine especially for the Atkinson cycle hybrid engine which I have in the current model corrola smooth reliable and epic fuel economy I'm getting 70 mpg UK not sure what that is in US conversion but great better than anything out there on the market, thank goodness that at least one current manufacturer still remains engineering lead rather than most car manufacturers being run by pen pushing accountants
The most reliable Toyota engine of our time was the Toyota 5R engine, 2 liter. We had it here in the Philippines around 1970's! It was the engine of the Toyota Crown! Everyone loved it! It was so durable and reliable!
Is there a big difference between the Japanese and American made 1.8? I have an 03 Japanese Corolla with a 04 American made engine. It runs super rich but the computer trims the fuel (-40 long term) and it runs great other than a slight rough idle, 35-40 hwy mpg. Changed plugs, O2 sensors, MAF sensor, and fuel pressure regulator, and checked for vacuum leaks, all to no avail. So I took it to a mechanic who was at a loss because of the engine swap done before I bought it.
My 1ZZ-FE with 240k miles was burning a lot of oil until I changed the PCV valve. $6 part and fifteen minutes of work fixed that problem. It still has slow leaks in a few places though, even after changed the intake manifold gasket and valve cover gasket.
Questions: Do you think this engine with a small turbo could handle the weight of a 72 dart? I want to build a commuter for my sibling. The only problem i feel like it would be the rwd conversion.
My 04 Matrix wasn't properly taken care of 10 years ago. It is burning oil at a rate of 250 cc or more per 3,000 km. It had carbon buildup and sparkles but were flushed out. People I talk to say just get something else instead of completely rebuilt the 1zzfe engine. I am curious how much is it to completely rebuilt the 1zzfe engine in your area. Do you guys trust re-manufactured 1zzfe engines? The dealership would only do a junk yard swap.
I just bought a 98 Corolla CE 1.8 5 speed manual it’s has 212k on it and I paid $2,200 everything is mint on this I’ve already thrown in a new radiator and upgraded some other things I absolutely love how simple this car is
Oh, the 98-99 1ZZ-FE. I drive a 99 Corolla with 2001 front end and manual swap, 24 years and counting. It does lose oil, smacked in 2 corners in its early days and showing rust. I wonder how much it's worth.
Hey Monkey, I'm in the Philippines for the foreseeable future, and am considering a late 90s Tamaraw FX with the Toyota 7k engine and manual trans. I don't think the 7k engine was available in the USA (unless they called it something else), but based on it's design, can you speak to it's likely reliability?
96 rolla 1.8L she’s got 360k miles burns oil pretty sure it’s valve guide seals but I got it 3 years ago put 100k (DoorDash driver) been thinking of rebuilding soon before something goes bad hit a semi so she looks a lil messed up but man still drives straight love this car so damn much definitely worth fixing body damage and rebuild sure I could buy a whole different one cheaper but kinda wanna build it is there any ways to push a lil more power?
I have a 2013 corolla 1.8 with 143k miles.. The dealer said it is leaking from the timing chain tensioner. It looks like this is a common problem with the 1.8L since there are so many videos on youtube about it. It is losing about 1 qt every 5 k miles. Is it worth trying to fix it? Or are trying to fix oil leaks on older cars like playing wack a mole?
I´ve just bought a 2009 japanese built Corolla and it came with the 1.8 1ZZ FE engine. i thought this generation came with the 2ZR FE?. Could somebody please give me more insight into this?
Bought my 2007 Focus SE last year with 89k. I looked it up and I'm not sure mine has a CVT. I have 102K on it now how do I find that info? I just bought a 2002 Chevy Prizm that has the 1ZZ-FE after dropping her '98 Geo Prizm off at the Junkyard having driven that one for 220k.
My 99 Corolla did blow brake lines because of rust other than that not much rust under the car besides fenders but under the body no major rust on the frame
I know this is not the same thing, but I have a 2003 Camry with the 2.4L and using oil like crazy, not burning. What is your opinion on this. I have 393,000 on it now.
Middle 90’s Corolla’s were I think 1993 through 1997, someone correct me if I’m wrong. The 4 door got the 1.6 liter engine and the wagon got the 1.8 liter engine. I live near Saint Paul Mn and that era Corolla wagon is very hard to find.
My 2009 1.8l Corolla head gasket went at 198000 miles. The air conditioner is not the best. Paint didn't hold up like the 2008 Focus. The radiator plastic nipple broke off near running hot on the replacement motor. Other than that a good car. It had it's regular maintenance.
Dude, don't knock the Focus. A lot of its downfalls are the people who owned them. You know how it goes people who can afford a higher end car take of it and visa vera. My kid has a 2008 focus started driving it in high school and now 3 in college. Outside of the motor mounts a pretty decent little car. Overall 28 mi to gallon. My 2007 Focus is a good running little car. Would jump in it go anywhere. I used to haul all kinds of stuff. Once again maintenance. Now the 2012 up transmission is a different story.
7afe because of the cast iron block instead of the later aluminum. Why? Because when something goes wrong and the engine overheats its much more less likely to warp or crack the block if u catch it in time. Also cast iron burns fuel more efficiently than with same engine design because it holds the heat in the cylinders better.
My 78' 20R was absolutely bullet proof. 350,000 miles on it until a freaking drunk hit it while it was parked. My friend owned a body shop, and the car was 22 years old and he knew I wanted to keep it. He told me to let it go...let it go, so off to the junk yard it went. Wipes tear from my eye.
I got a gen 1 99 most parts are still the 98, but IT HAS NEVER LET ME DOWN dang thing is at 275k and only burns half a quart every 1000 miles. has hit 3 deer has been fixed to new, i will replace the motor if it does go out for sure.
Great video! I gotta say I love my 2006 Toyota Corolla! It’s my first Toyota I’ve ever owned! I do have to disagree about Ford Focus! I’ve owned a 2005 ZX4 which was very reliable 2.0 Duratec engine! I had almost 300,000 miles on mine before I had a wreck! I’ve seen plenty of these first generation Ford Focus have 300,000-400,000 miles on them here in Georgia! Minor repairs like valve cover gaskets! I can say though the motor mounts go bad fast on these Ford Focus! I also owned a 2010 Ford Focus which was also very reliable! Maybe I just take good care of my vehicles! But I would only buy a first generation or second generation Ford Focus after that they were trash! Especially when they started using that dual clutch transmission
Great video. I agree that Honda Civics are disastrous except for that 1.8 and of course the early 80s Civics. Hondas last 15 years are pure garbage. I will take old Cavaliers over Hondas.
I love my '08 Corolla 1.8L car with 140k miles. I put on 35k miles a year now commuting to work. Great car, 37 mtg I use Mobil1EP oil and filter every 10k mile intervals. Expect 309k miles plus no problem. Transmission has been serviced🎉 every 40k miles. Coolant fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluids changed.
I see some old Ford Focus's driving around SF every blue moon. Neons are a lot more rare. The old corollas are really everywhere though.... literally everywhere.
Had a 1989 Corolla RS and gave to my step son in 2009 after purchasing a new 2009 Corolla. Drove the 09 for 11 years until this drunk butthead decided not to stop for a red light at an intersection. T-Boned me on the passenger side and only God’s grace I was by alone at the time. She was totaled and had almost 300,000 miles on the clock. She was easy to maintain and only replaced the water pump, alternator, struts, and regular maintenance and that’s it!
what about the 4AFE in the 1997 toyota corolla ce, i know its a 1.6 liter but there great. i actually currently have a 1.6 4AFE 1997 corolla and that engine still at 179k miles and it doesnt burn anymore fuel then the new ones do.

Just bringing up Ford Focus makes my heart skip a few beats. I will never buy another Ford because of the dual clutch nightmares that car put me through. They knew how bad it was before releasing it and still went ahead and screwed everyone who bought one over.
On 9/20/2024 my wife and I bought our 16 year old son a one owner 2005 Toyota Corolla CE with the 1.8L engine, an automatic transmission and only 124,590 orginal miles for $5,650 including all taxes, title and fees. The car is amazingly well perserved especially for basically a 20 year old car that spent its entire life in southern Ohio. The Car Fax report has 39 service records all performed at the Toyota dealership where it was bought. This car is one of those amazing one owner cars that you always hear about but rarely ever see. I think it is going to make an awesome first car for our son. Hopefully, it will last him through high school and college. I told him that as long as he keeps up the regular maintence this car could potentially run for over 300,000.
This guy has little knowledge of engines. When you talk about a specific engine for reliability, you must mention which year and which uprages have been made. You can not just say the whole 1.8 engine.
😮@@tinmar5974look at the price of used engines if in demand it will be higher. That will tell you a lot. The 2009 and 2010 are higher than other years in that series. Head gaskets blow around 200,000 miles on many of them . And you may end up replacing or repairing the radiator nipple. Nipple breaks and loses coolant

22R truck motor here in the USA most reliable.
Which 1zz engine is the best option to swap in a corolla 2000 the 98-99 or the 03 08?
Is there a big difference between the Japanese and American made 1.8? I have an 03 Japanese Corolla with a 04 American made engine. It runs super rich but the computer trims the fuel (-40 long term) and it runs great other than a slight rough idle, 35-40 hwy mpg. Changed plugs, O2 sensors, MAF sensor, and fuel pressure regulator, and checked for vacuum leaks, all to no avail. So I took it to a mechanic who was at a loss because of the engine swap done before I bought it.
Did you check the valves?
I envy people who live in the south. Its a struggle living in the North East.
Left communism sucks.
We do have really easy emigration policies. Just show your passport to the deputy at the Mason Dixon line and welcome. Try Mississippi to start.
So what’s this about oil burning issues with them. I’m looking for a long term beater to replace my 06 accord v6
My 1ZZ-FE with 240k miles was burning a lot of oil until I changed the PCV valve. $6 part and fifteen minutes of work fixed that problem. It still has slow leaks in a few places though, even after changed the intake manifold gasket and valve cover gasket.
@ leaks I can deal with but my f23a burned so much oil I went thru a 5 quart bottle every week (I was in vtec everyday so that didn’t help)
@@jimmysway3240 That's some crazy oil burning! Even when my 1ZZ was burning oil it was only about 1 quart in 1500 miles.
Questions: Do you think this engine with a small turbo could handle the weight of a 72 dart? I want to build a commuter for my sibling. The only problem i feel like it would be the rwd conversion.
I love my 2005 Corolla 222,000 miles 👍
My 04 Matrix wasn't properly taken care of 10 years ago. It is burning oil at a rate of 250 cc or more per 3,000 km. It had carbon buildup and sparkles but were flushed out. People I talk to say just get something else instead of completely rebuilt the 1zzfe engine. I am curious how much is it to completely rebuilt the 1zzfe engine in your area. Do you guys trust re-manufactured 1zzfe engines? The dealership would only do a junk yard swap.
7A-FE was one of the best. My 1995 corolla. Was in the family since 1999. Crashed in 2019. Best engine ever.
Came here to say this love my 7afe!
I just bought a 98 Corolla CE 1.8 5 speed manual it’s has 212k on it and I paid $2,200 everything is mint on this I’ve already thrown in a new radiator and upgraded some other things I absolutely love how simple this car is
I had a 98' best car I've owned except the 77' Celica. The 20R engine was tops.
Oh, the 98-99 1ZZ-FE. I drive a 99 Corolla with 2001 front end and manual swap, 24 years and counting. It does lose oil, smacked in 2 corners in its early days and showing rust. I wonder how much it's worth.
what is the model of the 1.8 you show at the start on the tire ?????
01:41 😊
I am planning to buy Toyota crown mark ll it got 1998 cc 3y engine..will it be good?
I just bought a 1997 Corolla with the 1.8L in it and only spent a 1k for it, and it's only got 181k milage man it's nice to get 35 mpg
I love Corollas! Only issue I’ve ever seen on them is paint chips
Hey Monkey,
I'm in the Philippines for the foreseeable future, and am considering a late 90s Tamaraw FX with the Toyota 7k engine and manual trans.
I don't think the 7k engine was available in the USA (unless they called it something else), but based on it's design, can you speak to it's likely reliability?
Just get the Fortuner and call it a day. Parts are too hard to get for the Tamaraw FX.
It’s an easy fix. Cheap o ring. Not hard to get at on a hoist.
Same here
What are the best and worst years for 1.8?
I know this is not the same thing, but I have a 2003 Camry with the 2.4L and using oil like crazy, not burning. What is your opinion on this. I have 393,000 on it now.
There were problems with that engine even if you took care of them.
Can you review the new 2024 Corolla Hybrid LE FWD
Just got one last week
My 2009 1.8l Corolla head gasket went at 198000 miles. The air conditioner is not the best. Paint didn't hold up like the 2008 Focus. The radiator plastic nipple broke off near running hot on the replacement motor. Other than that a good car. It had it's regular maintenance.
My 2001 focus wagon has 182k miles and still going
Hey How about a 2010 Corolla . Did they come with 1.8
And how were they ?
Nice tutorial
I have a 2010 Matrix with the same 1.8 L engine and a manual gearbox as my winter beater. At the moment 200k miles, pretty much indestructible.
Nice assessment. I suggest doing a video on the 1.8 L 2014 to 2019 Toyota Corolla compare to other brands 1.8 L
And it's in the Pontiac Vibe!
I am going to say that the 22R-E is just as reliable. I've seen too many SR-5s with 22Rs that were over 250,000 miles.
So 2009 Scion xd with the Toyota 1.8 is a good buy ❓❓❓
7afe because of the cast iron block instead of the later aluminum. Why? Because when something goes wrong and the engine overheats its much more less likely to warp or crack the block if u catch it in time. Also cast iron burns fuel more efficiently than with same engine design because it holds the heat in the cylinders better.
I’ve got a 01 Corolla with 99k on it as my first car, good to know it’s gunna outlive me lol
1.6 or 1.8 corolla ?
Bought a 98 and got 33 mpg all day long in local traffic, nearly 40 mpg on highway.
Best engine of toyota is the A serial and especially the A4fe, i have it in ny toyota corolla 1998
I found a 2000 Corolla 1.8 with 81,000 original miles and manual transmission for $6,990 should I go for it, what do you think ?
That's pretty steep. I bought my 01 with 114k a month ago for $2400 cash. Absolutely love it.
In 1977, the Toyota Corolla was classified as the greatest car made that year! I believe that it had the 1.8L engine!
That gen Corolla didn't have a 1.8. 1.6 was the biggest engine in those Corollas
Anybody know where i can find a motor mines blew out, ive been looking around for 98 corolla le
@grumpymonkeygarage
Let it go
My ‘05 Corolla only gets 24 mpg, I don’t understand why
I love my '08 Corolla 1.8L car with 140k miles. I put on 35k miles a year now commuting to work. Great car, 37 mtg
I use Mobil1EP oil and filter every 10k mile intervals.
Can that engine fit in a 2016 Kia Soul
XD
You have a long way to go lol my 7afe has 340k miles and like he said it gets tired mine smokes a bit but doesn’t leak a lot of oil just the seals are tired.
@@erikgonzalez2278 yes finally another AFE owner that really drives his car I appricate you man for telling me, it makes me feel like im the only mf out here lmao 😂
@@PancakeOWOTM lol foreal there’s not many left for sure I mean I see them around but not like everyday. Shit feels like a tank as always and won’t break. Oh how I’d love to have a low mileage AFE Engine lol. I have a lot of people ask me is this your first car lmao I’m like nope it’s my daily driver I put 40k miles last year on it for gig work even though I have newer cars.
I believe 5sfe is the best or the toyota diesel in the hylux
i got a 99 ve 😍
What about nissan QG15 engine
FE s are reaĺly good too...
1ZZ-FE?
Just bringing up Ford Focus makes my heart skip a few beats. I will never buy another Ford because of the dual clutch nightmares that car put me through. They knew how bad it was before releasing it and still went ahead and screwed everyone who bought one over.
There’s surprisingly a lot of early 2000 focus around me probably manuals
🤔
@grumpymonkeygarage how about the Toyota Yaris the scion X5 and so on for the iconic 1.5 Liter 1NZ-FE naturally aspirated VVT
Sounds like Toyota peaked in the early 2000s to 2010s. This is what I’ve heard of course since I’m 19 😂
Then they should haven't made another engine since it's so reliable.
Oil leaks are just sweat from all the horsepower and reliability from these 1.8L
Hate living in the rust belt
This guy has little knowledge of engines. When you talk about a specific engine for reliability, you must mention which year and which uprages have been made. You can not just say the whole 1.8 engine.
Oil burner for 2003 Corolla
What about 2zr fae
Yeah I want to buy now 2009, Petrol with this engine (Avensis) so I also didn't heard nothing about that.
My 1.8 1zzfe in my Pontiac vibe is currently pushing almost 400k and still kicking
22r was the best hands down
I live near Detroit. We know the focus sucks. We still see them everywhere here.😂
Ill take the old 3tc 1.8
Also Toyota 2TR 2.7 in light trucks are indestructible
