The first engine I know of to use MMC was the C32B in the 1997 Honda/Acura NSX. Honda termed it "Fiber-reinforced metal" or FRM for short, and it was needed to increase the V6's bore to increase displacement from 3.0 to 3.2L displacement. The F20C in the S2000 also used an FRM block. I'm not sure of which other manufacturers employed the technique.
You explain all this in-depth stuff really well, thanks. I had a 1999 Celica which was one of the earliest 2ZZ's. It developed the broken lift bolt issue after a few months of me owning it. Cost me close to $1000 (NZD) for my mechanic to fix about 11 years ago.
This is still the best review I've ever watched of the 2zzge, you explain it better than Toyota did. Actually better than any of these youtubers have. Well in sir!
The valve sizes are larger than typical because press in valve seats aren't used. The aluminium seat is "laser clad" giving it a thin sintered finish. This was pioneered in 1997 on this engine and has been continued in later Toyota engines. MMC durability Vrs cast iron depends on your market. In the USA, high sulphur fuel creates acid during combustion at low engine temps. This tends to strip off oil film resulting in accelerated wear. In Europe or Japan the far lower sulphur content does not result in chemical attack so bottom end durability will match expectations for km's driven. MMC seems to have only been used in the 2ZZ allowing an "over" bore without increasing the bore center distance. MMC was later used in the Rav4 hybrid front brake rotors where the weight saving is significant. The Elise S1 had MMC brake rotors all around but returned to cast iron on the S2 update due to design flaws.
About 5-7 whp can be gained from indexing the spark plugs. I've seen it on a celica gts I was working with. An indexing kit isnt that expensive, and worth it since those engines are hard to gain power with.
Videos of the early 2000s Corolla XRS with a supercharger was INSANE SOUNDING. That car had zero business having such an awesome engine combination, but Toyota somehow decided to manufacture a supercharger kit for the car.

Great Review !!! But even better (and comical but excellent) narration . I really do enjoy watching you videos. Your explanation is so energetic and comical, but it revs up the curiosity and increases the want to know more compression. I had a lecturer in collage that thought natural science. Now, as with most people, you will completely loose me with science and math in the first second. But, with that lecturer, he did it with so much enthusiasm and energy and flair, i just wanted to know more, and all of our marks where really excellent. You remind me of him. Thank you very much. I really do enjoy your videos, and your "energy", and flair !!! Please do keep it up. Take care and catch you in the next video.

Nice dude, I checked your videos it sounds great. Anything in particular made you go for the 2ZZGE instead of the 3SGE? I recently bought and MR2 and will likely swap it in the future
Thank you so very much for your video! The way you explain makes me smile. And it would be great if you make a separate video on 4A-GZE. As for 2ZZ-GE - in Russia it is known as engine for - let me call it - 'performance, not mileage.
I just towed home a $500 Pontiac Vibe GT with this engine. The compression is good, but it likely needs a head gasket due to the low amount of coolant and high amount of oil, and reports that it “gets a little warm”. I’m eager to get it sorted and back on the road and revving high. I learned from your video that it is very important that it be warm before it sings the song of its people. I should also look into putting a 1zzfe oil pan on it and that fancy billet oil pump gear at some point. I would imagine that it also likes wheels that are very light. I’ve never seen anything cheap in a field with a K20 in it, but I would also be happy to flog one of those if I find one.
im currently running a 2zz-ge in a Australian Corolla Sportivo (Aussie version of Matrix), not many parts here but its popular that we get ported manifolds + throttle body with a CAI. Then map it out with a v-manage ecu. we get some decent gain. but the only problem is the gear box on 3rd gear :( but 2zzge is still life
Where in Aus are you at mate? I've got a pre facelift 2003 Sportivo with just a custom 2.5" exhaust and CAI plus some lowered springs and Strut Top Brace which I highly recommend. I Wouldn't mind checking out some BC Racing Coilovers and even a Whiteline Rear Sway Bar for it someday too
That was all really good info, especially the fact that I can't hone the block. I totally would have dropped my block off at a machine shop had I not watched this
Looking you can get a whole long block with 20k-60k miles stripped and cleaned for $2,600 or so. If building an engine for big power I think it would be easier to start there. I'm angling for a 9 second drag celica as goal. Tubed not street legal car.
I learned plenty on the iconic engine videos you made so far. I'm an engine freak. I was shocked that the Toyota V series was even a thing. I thought the 2T/3T engines were the "Toyota Hemi" engine for reasons, until you pointed it out. It even looks like an American V8. That's an engine which would be interesting to see if it has an aftermarket support in Japan. Seriously, an all aluminum Toyota engine with V8 rumble coming from a midsize Toyota would have people asking things about this engine. I hope in enjoying your other videos. P.S. While not as popular as the SR20, the KA24 does have a following, so consider this an option when you run out of engines to talk of or earlier.
The V thing is unfortunately so rare that parts for it are pretty damn hard to find! The V series was primarily used in the Toyota Century, which is a pretty rare car itself. I would love to see one first person but I'm not betting on it. It's an interesting engine no doubt. KA24 is cool to, its definitely coming up before I run out of engines.
@@d4a, so the V series is the predecessor to the V12 that came in the later Centuries. So not exactly a performance engine, but probably one that is refined, like the older Cadillac engines. Now I love Toyota even more. They come up with the first all-aluminun Japanese engine, one with probably heavy influence in American design. And then they make the only JDM V12 ever made. How cool is that?
Most engines will be hurt by overrevving bc they're interference engines, over revving will cause valves to slam into each other, the case here is that the factory oil pump was not made to rotate any faster that 8600 rpms, there are aftermarket pumps for that.
Well red line is 8500 and the rev limiter should help but i did miss shift once All i could hear was the rev limiter causing the engine to chatter away as it hit about 8800 until i hit the clutch and dropped power

I had the opportunity to see a l3-vdt rebuilt from start to finish and see it really up close. A very very impressive design. I even captured some amateur footage with my cell-phone that I might use. That engine is definitely getting an iconic episode in the future. I can't really say when exactly, I just started and there's so much to cover, but I'm not leaving it out that's for sure.
Great video, you should do the 2ZR-FE as it also has been used in the Lotus Elise 2014 and up, not only that but it's one of the most recent engines to be used by Toyota in their production cars and the replacement of the 2ZZ
2gr fe video please please please!!!. The most underrated and least talked about engine. This engine has huge potential hence why Lotus came back for more and the Mr2 communities love it. Pleaseeeee!!!
A friend of my son is building one of these to swap into a Yaris. He bought an entire Vibe GT and immediately pulled the engine and junked the rest. The engine has been at the engine shop for a few months now waiting on some parts. I'm going to have to ask him exactly what they are waiting on. I didn't realize it would require re-sleaving. He also managed to come up with one of the TRD supercharger kits for the 2ZZ which is going to be part of the build.

Typically, if you get a jdm engine all you need is to drop in some forged Mahle Pistons & you'll be set for boost. Just like everything else Bad tunes are what messed this engine up more than anything. We've seen stock internals rock up to 391 whp but if you want to get up there it's really recommended to either get meth injection or E85 because of the high compression of this engine. Btw for those that are curious about the swap we have a Facebook group dedicated to it with a much of awesome people & we are so close to making this a bolt on swap in the mr2 mk1!

2004 Toyota Matrix Xrs. Got it at 200k. Was in bad shape but got it running good. 230k now and I'm constantly bouncing off the limiter. Original engine and trans. These engines are bulletproof.
Love this video! And love this engine I have a 2005 Corolla XRS it's sooo much fun! Thanks for bringing some attention to this underappreciated engine!
Currently enjoying a celica TRD sport M with a special 2zz in it!
Love your videos, keep up the good work!
I dont think there is any difference with the engine. Just a little bit in the suspension
@@Bobaganush26 I believe that the TRD Sport M had 200bhp instead of 190bhp, it's hard to find info about this car though
@@FairyLiquid69 I know in other countries without emissions laws. It has 190 hp because it has no catalytic converter. But I'm not to sure about 200 hp

EXCELLENT Video. Learnt some more about the 2ZZ. I have a 2003 JDM Corolla Fielder Z Aerotourer Wagon. Family car with the 2ZZ Auto 4-speed box with Manual mode. Bought the car from Japan with 42,000kms. It is now doing 196,000kms. Only renewed a leaking oil seal, 2nd set of Iridium plugs, and 3rd serpentine belt. Crosses 100mph easily. Electronically limited at 190KMH. Car loves to be driven fast.
Oh ! BMW used to do something similar to their cylinder walls. They called it Nickasil. Don't know who was first.
This was the best 2ZZ video up to date. I like how you listed all the cars that come with the engine. Keep them coming.
Regards. Trinidad & Tobago.
dude idk how i just found your channel but you deserve way more subs!!!! keep up the good vids
I can't help but picture Christoph Waltz when you speak, one of my favorite actors. That being said, I just purchased an 05 Lotus Elise and I'm new to this engine, very informative video! Many thanks and keep up the good work!
This channel is one of my best UA-cam finds of all time!
I was real bored today and started looking at this Toyota Corolla XRS 2005 version. I got one used for under $2,000 and it's like a secondary car for me but back to you and your video and the way you do videos it's like phenomenal you need like a TV show you're an original character you're like nothing no one's ever seen and the information is Top Notch I got to give it to you just for the even taking the time out to even sit in front of a camera and give out all this information free .great video
I believe the Honda h series was the first
24:53, "The fuel pump goes pop. Then the engine goes pop." Your illustration of that had me bent over laughing! Lol!
I am pretty sure that he meant to say the oil pump. It's still hilarious though.
slept on engine, N/A homies
You explain all this in-depth stuff really well, thanks. I had a 1999 Celica which was one of the earliest 2ZZ's. It developed the broken lift bolt issue after a few months of me owning it. Cost me close to $1000 (NZD) for my mechanic to fix about 11 years ago.
ive never clicked on a video faster, great content keep it up do the 3sgte next please
3sge is coming on the next next Sunday, i.e. In 13 days :)
@@d4a Wooo!
Your channel is absolutely amazing!! No nonsense or hyperbole, soooooo much good information.
Just bought a good condition 2005 T-Sport. yeah the engine is great.
I like you bro you don’t give a f what people think about you, making great entertaining and informative content
The sounds and graphics he includes in each video is epic. Pretty sure I heard pokemon noises in this one as well🤣
About 5-7 whp can be gained from indexing the spark plugs. I've seen it on a celica gts I was working with. An indexing kit isnt that expensive, and worth it since those engines are hard to gain power with.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN INDEXING SPURK PLUGS? LASER IRIDIUM SPARK PLUGS?
Videos of the early 2000s Corolla XRS with a supercharger was INSANE SOUNDING. That car had zero business having such an awesome engine combination, but Toyota somehow decided to manufacture a supercharger kit for the car.
Feeling great for being a small part of this video (18:10) for the 2zz-ge, the engine we love... 👍
That little whine monster is yours? What are the odds, wow. Hats off, sounds the part and seems to fly, great ride!

Thank you so very much for your video! The way you explain makes me smile.
And it would be great if you make a separate video on 4A-GZE.
As for 2ZZ-GE - in Russia it is known as engine for - let me call it - 'performance, not mileage.
BRILLIANT MOTOR! I had it in my RunX RSi FTW!!
Currently putting one into an AW11 MR2. This thing is gonna fly.
Hey man if you dont mind let me know how it goes
I got one and i tell you,all these years and it still pull like new.
2ZZ-GE is love

Then map it out with a v-manage ecu.
we get some decent gain. but the only problem is the gear box on 3rd gear :(
but 2zzge is still life
Where in Aus are you at mate? I've got a pre facelift 2003 Sportivo with just a custom 2.5" exhaust and CAI plus some lowered springs and Strut Top Brace which I highly recommend. I Wouldn't mind checking out some BC Racing Coilovers and even a Whiteline Rear Sway Bar for it someday too
The rap at the end was the cherry on the cake… I needed that!
Had lots of fun with my 1ZZFE Celica. Underpowered but revved and sounded like a motorcycle. Great and underrated engine family.
a 1zz doesnt sound or rev like a motorcycle
Great explanation. really. Thank you from Indonesia

Great video, you should do the 2ZR-FE as it also has been used in the Lotus Elise 2014 and up, not only that but it's one of the most recent engines to be used by Toyota in their production cars and the replacement of the 2ZZ

I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS KEEP MAKING THEM!!!!!!
Keep the raps. They start to become iconic.
Wow You totally nailed this one I like how many things u explained
I have 2000 Celica gts and all u said happened to me lol
My oil pump got hurt left my engine dry while I was flying through the gears on the freeway screw up my rod bearings the shit went up Scratched my pistons my sleeves and crank 😭 So after that I build the engine. Gt crank pistons sleeves bored to 2.0L Garret t3t4 turbo inter cooler power fc stand-alone everything I needed to have bulletproof engine
All done started to push it after 2-300 km on 3 psi and one day my oil pump exploded f me .All done again new billet oil pump this time lol 😆 running 3-5 psi made 260 whp with some mild tune
But soon it will go back to dyno wanna get at least 500 whp if the translation can handle it lol.
Amazing video u did now I know even more about my engine 🤪 Cheers 🍻
8zoran3 that’s really strange, i’ve been told the pumps generally only go from over revving the engine.
Your transmission is going to explode, from what I've heard. They really don't like a lot of extra power.
@@Drifty325i yeah that might be the reason. Before I did the engine I had TRD flywheel, clutch exhaust and injen cold air intake car was revving so fast that couple people I gave my car to try they could not shift fast enough and hitting limiter whey too many times 😢

400,000+ miles on my 2003 Pontiac Vibe GT.
Runs like it's got 30k on it. (Valvoline or Havoline full synthetic. Every time for two decades.)
