- Casey Putsch reviews the 1979 Porsche 928 in this episode of Casey's 80s Garage. Yes.... technically it's from the 70s, but this car existed mostly in the 80s! :) Pasha fabric, timing belts, and smooth running Bosch K Jetronic fuel injection system. I daily drove my '88 S4 for 6 years here in NJ, all year around. Put close to 88K on the car doing that.. Awesome car and very reliable despite of what you might hear.
The 928 was to me the most drop-dead gorgeous Porsche ever. Also, fabric is far superior to leather.
I have always liked the 928 the best of all Porsches. “Risky Business”
I used to have a co-worker that had a 928. He would loan it to me to make business trips. Best road manners ever, and enough power and speed to get into trouble.
The 928 is my Holy Grail car.
928 Some of the best pop up lights of the 80s and the C4 Corvette flip around 👍🏼
Can’t wait for 9/44/20!!
Got your movies mixed up there, Casey. Tom Cruise was the "U-Boat commander" in Risky Business. But, Al Pacino (who was in The Godfather) drove a 928 in Scarface - "Give me a phone, with a scrambler. And put in a radio with one of those scanners, so I can pick up flying saucers."
The 928 has an absolutely gorgeous silhouette, and I love the fastback design, but one thing that you failed to mention is the beautiful shut-lines of the doors. Drop dead sexy!
I've always loved the 928 ever since I first saw one. I perfer it to any supercar ever made. I hope to own one some day. I love the beautiful interior. The fabric is period correct. I see too many that get modified. Thanks.
One of my favorite cars ever. Love the 928
Its because of the 928 i started fallowing you, at the time i had a 1983 944 and still have my 79 928 which i found funny as I explained to my wife that I wasn’t the only fool with these 2 cars and your were same years respectively. I really hope you get another 928 would love to watch you do some service on it, timing belt etc. Thanks for all the great videos!
NO.
Casey is fooling himself.
Who does he think he is?
GarryWarren Smith?
You don't even like the conservative German brand called Porsche.
Casey said he wanted a white Porsche. Well, They're not just white.
It's a shade of white that's had all the harshness taken out of it.
But Casey never wears all white clothing.
That is literally the best pascha interior I've ever seen. All else have been worn to the threads!
I love Casey's attitude about the 911... It's basically, "You can hate me because I'm right. I don't care."
Love how this beast turned out! Between the Avalon King, Pasha seats, and overall great look and performance!
The seats don't show a shape. When you look at the car, you notice wheels and something at the seats area.
Our mind doesn't recognize seats. We see checkered flag patterns in the middle of the seats.
We understand It's a racing style car.
I didn't like the print in the beginning, but since I know it was original as an option, I like it a lot more.
I've seen the pasha as door panel print with leather seats which looks lovely too.
Mr. Putsch is on point. A 1983 928 followed me home 6 years ago. It is a lovely straightforward car to work on and enjoy. My biggest gripe is previous “mechanics” german-torquing the threads out of aluminum housings of the drivetrain. Helicoils are your friend.
Most spares are readily available. When not, the is a cottage industry rebuilding or fabricating replacements.
The fabric vs leather is correct via history. wool velvet was used in train seat upholstery and car seats before leather. The velvet is supple, beautiful and lasts a long time.
It looks absolutely stunning, the interior and exterior are great throughout.
My lord that interior came out incredible. I cannot be looking at 928s online now.
Thank you casey for explaining the driving sensations.
Now the object becomes something we can understand.
Your 928 came out beautiful and looks very original ! Love the interior.
Glad you like it
One of the best things about Porsches is that they sound very mechanical from the outside. I think putting a loud exhaust really detracts from the car.
Porsche is fun and conservative.
Sign of true quality🙂👍
I had a '79 928 euro - spec. the knob on the threshold was to tilt the headlights hydraulically...never worked in the 30 years that I had it.
I have loved the 928 the day it came out. I had to get the hot wheel when it came out. Still think it’s beautiful.
So sad you let go the cool 928 ! Very special car !
Woah! It's beautiful! Sorry I haven't been able to stay up to date as much as I'd like, but when I do tune in; quality. 👌
Every time you mention Bosch FI my mind wanders back to that '87 Alfa Spider Graduate I had. Rebuilt title. Bought it for $1,000 in 2005. Enjoyed it for about a year and the clutch went out. Let it sit until 2012 and pulled the drivetrain. Then let it sit like that until 2015 when I decided to punt and put it on Ebay. Bidding war ensued and it sold for $800 to a local buyer. Contacted him recently and learned he put it all in a storage building and it's still sitting there. Occasionally think about trying to buy it back for $800 and rescuing but I now have a Miata to scratch the roadster itch so I dunno.
sick car! love the interior
Someday I'll have an 87ish S4. Been my dream car for 20+ years. Hard to find the sticks though. Mught be darn near impossible to find an affordable one when im finally able.
l love 928 porsche and this ones in nice shape lucky you to find one like this
Love that color. Still rather have my 951 back, but if I get a chance to get a 928 at a good price, I'm doing it.
That’s a gorgeous car. I’ve always loved the 928. Who doesn’t love a Porsche with a V8.
The 928 and 924/944 are cool, but i think the front engine configuration really isn't in the spirit of the brand. I know its part of why they exist, but still.
@@mmonkeyman1403 It makes zero sense when people say this. Any other sports car manufacturer is allowed to make mid and front engine cars, as well as GTs. But not Porsche, lmao.
@@mmonkeyman1403So wrong. Most cars Porsche has ever produced, road or race has been either front or midengined setup. Why cant many of the Porsche crowd just be greatful of all the incredible engineering Porsche has given us!?
Remember that even the 911 is now mid engine in the RSR racecar.
Love these cars. I have a 928 S4, S2 and 944 Turbo. Hi from South Africa 🇿🇦
Well done. Love the 928. Love you kept it the way it should be. Looks immaculate
Sad you didn’t keep it
I have always appreciated the 928
Great job. Well done.
Great result for a sensible budget. That's the difficult roling restoration. How many of us end up spending too much, and the result... well mine is great! 😁
And he experienced the sensations of FUN and swiftness through conservative means.
Aw man, just came from your original 928 video and was hoping to see bronze wheels and houndstooth cloth. That cloth is fucking crazy mad shatter!
Unrelated to this video, but your shop looks nice with the new paint!
Ha ha ha. I’m literally in middle while watching this video of putting the scirocco back together after putting a new fuel tank in it. Lots of rust flakes in there.
Will we ever see the footage of that steam locomotive or the topless, primitive glider or plane you were in? Both used to be quick clips in your old intro video.
WOW , just WOW
I have an 84 944 collecting dust. someday I will get it revived.
Great walk around!
Do I sell my nice old 986 Boxster S to replace it with a similarly priced , (possibly hanging) red 928? Hmmm...
Brother, you keep talking like that you will be kicked off YT! Your whole speech is TRUTH! Thank you! Great vid, love the car & your project updates.
I agree with you about the car speculation crowd.
I kinda wonder if the porsche panamera came about because they wanted a re-invisioned 928...
Putsch for President!
always liked 944s :)
Paint is amazing. Is that one or two coats of Avalon King?
P.S. the rear visors are not for the rear passengers, they are for rearward entering glare for the driver.)
I daily drive my 1970 Cutlass convertible and my 1990 Corvette.
I'm a 911 guy, and I think 928's are cool. SO TAKE THAT.
Ok I WILL! :)
I have an 81 in the exact same paint color
I really prefer cloth seats to leather if it's good cloth. It's more comfortable, it's easier to care for, and it wears better.
This car is crazy hard to drive. You got to go fast. Other cars are all in the way. It's tough to get through the gears.
Compared to what? A golf kart?
13:22 onward
can't agree more 🙂
the Pasha pattern is supposed to be a styleization of an urban landscape disappearing in a rear view mirror.(and I am stoned)
The interior gives me vertigo, but the exterior is beautiful 😍
Lovely, pure Sharknose with amazing Pascha trim and a Casey Putsch signature behind the driver's seat. Not sure about that 986 rear view mirror though. Did that come from the Zero car?
The new owner actually asked for the signature.
@@CaseyPutsch I'd be proud to have the signature in my car too. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the charitable work u do. Not everyone would and could do that. Those kids are lucky to have a selfless mentor like you. Best.
Wrong.
Look what happened to the slot car world casey dumped.
His wife is a lonely alcoholic by now thinking of moving to Australia.
His garden is neglected. Etc.
Amazing the volume of good info and review in such a short spazzing...😏😝...must be the injuneering....
Pleaseeeee get another 928
Sept. 28th was my birthday Casey.
When will we get a Pterosaur Review?
HAHAHAHAH! Soon i Guess
HAHAHAHAH! Soon i Guess
How did you fix the dash and the shift boot?
Makes me wish I never sold my 1983 928s 5 speed black on black sub 75k miles
Non sunroof 928s are kind of hard to find
Especially since in the late 90's early 00's everyone kept putting them in. I never understood why you'd cut a hole in your perfectly good roof, to put a window, that doesn't really ventilate unless you run the air, which nobody did, and that's covered in smoke wrapper anyways, so it's not like you enjoy the sky through it. So stupid.
Radio knob repair: drill out knob and make insert using 3d printer
Is that a Boxster rear view mirror?
7:00 Proof that owning a 928 is not such a Risky Business after all ;)
914s are coming up in value and respect now that Porsche is officially part of the VW Group. Ironically, I posted a short video with all these three Porsches. I had a 1975 2.0 914 back in the day. Also use to drive my rich friend’s father’s brand new 1986 930, silver, red leather, 4 speed. Now that’s a car, and also felt like driving a VW bus, but with crazy mad turbo lag.
ua-cam.com/video/vlqmKps7u9k/v-deo.html
It looks a bit like a pacer with out the spoiler
This guy also voices Jerry on Rick n morty
The 944.1 is not ergonomical in the contrary to the 944.2 which has brilliant interior design.
I'm parting out a manual 944 at my new job and it hurts a little
Is always unfortunate
Random question, which is faster around a track, the IndyCar, IMSA Corvette, or the prototipo?
Once they are all up and running I would love to see them on the track at the same time.
@@brianspenst1374 use vinwiki connections to get drivers
Try a 928 GTS
My wife showed me a listing for an 80s diesel Rabbit for $2K. After I said "ooooo" she replied with "no, we do not need a 4th car".
Learned to drive in an 82 diesel. 52 horsepower and 0 to 60 in half a minute. Insane mpg.
@@mhowellaz This one has a full body restoration and engine rebuild. It just needs put back together. I was thinking it would be a great commuting car in town.
Do they do 944 buttons / knobs as well? Link?
V12 SACAPUNTAS pelican parts sells everything you will need, plus if you search alittle there are a few sites that sell everything for your Porsche all reasonably priced
@@jimmccomb6849 thank you so much sir!
how about 968, torque 4-cyl. large displacement 3.0L and 6-spd. Maybe should be on your list as well. Great job on the 928 though, keep it up.
Rare and expensive.
@@Ermy1996 Not really worth the money IMHO. Better spent on a good example of a 996 or earlier Cayman S.
@@chesswizard31 they are expensive caus they are rare. I have never seen one irl, they are 65k here.
I just absolutely hate seeing the clouds of dust that perpetually fly out of cloth seats anytime you tap them... 😰🤢
Very true sir
But nobody breaks out the shampoo machine to clean their seats every week.
Sad but true.
Everything designed today for the workforce.
There's no time to clean everyday.
9/28!!!!!
"Risky Business" Tom Cruise, Rebecca Dormea(sp)
Risky Business- not The Godfather
They grow up so fast... 😢
Is this one going to fall from a dock after a teenager goes for a joyride as well?
I thought the 28 had aluminum body panels? My 944 was galvanized steel.
Doors and Hood are aluminum iirc. Rest is galvanized steel.
@@2ndgameX also front wings, on some models at least.
i wish 9/28 was a happy date here in Estonia but its the day that we lot the Ferry ship Estonia 26 years ago. second biggest peacetime marintime disaster in recorded history right after Titanic. 850 passenger only 134 survived.
Also the biggest cover up by the coorked people in the goverment today we found out the ship was rammed or damaged by something from the side and it wasnt simple accident because of weather.
Maybe 928's and 944's don't rust, but every 914 I've seen for sale has somewhere between minor rust and catastrophic rust.
Maybe that's why some people don't consider the 914 a "real" Porsche.
914 bodies where not galvanized at all, you can bet it will rust.
@@Ermy1996 Huh, that makes sense.
I wonder if Casey will get a 914 next?
nope
917 or 962 replica....
Hold on, 914s are coming up in value and respect now that Porsche is officially part of the VW Group. Ironically, I posted a short video with all these three Porsches. I had a 1975 2.0 914. Fun car, but agree so tiny today. Thank you
ua-cam.com/video/vlqmKps7u9k/v-deo.html
Casey,
Could you compare the 928 and the 944? Looking for my first Porsche.
Thanks!
Get the 944 first. Easier to work on, sportier, and guilt free. I daily one.
You're absolutely right Casey, cars need to be driven, I've been using a 1972 MGB GT as a daily driver for over 13 years now. Sure after 13 years outside it's not the best looking car, but I've managed to keep it going, it's crossed many mountains in the alps, it's been all through the UK and Scotland and to the south of France, if anything it's got character! @sterlingthemg
You can only drive a car if you bought a spare.
This thrifty idea you have of buying 1 car and you were successful, is craziness.
Can you remove the rear spoiler, if it has one? For the cleaner look.
You “can,” but you will need to swap the rubber molding and aluminum molding around the con-caved rear quarter windows. The models with the rear spoiler had different window moldings to shape around the spoiler on the quarter windows. Also, same problem with the *aluminum* molding around the hatch window. That will also need to be swapped with spoiler-less molding. There’s also obviously some bolt holes that will need to filled in. Other than that it’s good to go. If you’re talking about a S4 or newer, then you just remove the spoiler/wing from the hatch and fill in the bolt holes.
👍👋👋👋😁
😢
Super rare manual not, most early cars were.the auto was the rarer car back in the day.Later cars were mostly auto.
7 911 guys disliked this video
I wish I had one. From '94-'95. Too bad they're too expensive. By douchebags of course.
And I disagree with you Casey. Leather seats are generally better. Fabric seats will boil your ass and groin if it's hot. Also they're easier to clean.
3:20 ummmmm Casey y r u wanting to fit a person in the back?!?
100%. The 911 is the poor man's 928. Sorry - I gotta call balls and strikes. the 928 was European "Car" of the Year 1979. No other sports car including the 911 has ever won "Car" of the year. The 928 has won 2 production car land speed record at Bonneville (1986 and 2020) - the 911 has exactly won none. Even 911 enthusiast Magnus Walker has started his 928 collection - its Now or Never for the 928 still the biggest bang for the buck in classic Porsches. Singer/RWB/RUF could easily reimagine 928s - its just a matter of time before someone specializes in customizing and outlawing 928s - There is no substitute.
To Quote Michelle Pfeiffer From Scarface (another film that had a 928 too no less) it looks like somebody's Nightmare lol like that would drive me nuts looking at that seat covering through the rear view mirror all the time, as I think dark grey and black would have worked better for the checkerboard and made it abit more subtile and easier to live with all at once.
like I like the idea but......... lol
Nice 928, except the checkerboard cloth interior. I still take fine leather and wider wheels/tires. CUP II or phone dials.
Too bad you can't celebrate the date of Porsche's more well known car.
Too soon?
Agree. Was permanently laid off due to covid 9/11/20...
