- Casey continues the restoration work on the 1979 Porsche 928. He is having difficulty knowing if the upholstery shop is being professional and takes this time to work on the new shift boot and steering wheel leather and talk about the build.

Casey, I don't mean to tell you your business or sound like a know-it-all, but you seriously need to leverage the 928 community on Rennlist forums. Those guys know craftsmen, parts suppliers, and technicians who have supported the 928 community for decades.
exactly!
Good advice, Shawn. I had an ‘89 928S4 and found the Rennlist Forums to provide CORRECT, time saving information with knowledgeable tech resources. Give ‘em a try, Casey.
Rennlist is excellent! They helped my find my tweed for the 944.
Yay the 928 is back! (first comment!) Those steering wheel leather covers are a great interior starter project for a car interior. If you are patient, it can be quite cathartic. The hardest part for me was always getting the knot clean, because while I am the one driving and the ONLY ONE that knows the knot isn't perfect, I KNOW THE KNOT ISN'T PERFECT. (insert an OCD tick)
I just bougt a 928s from Sweden ,
i am from Norway, it is a 85 model,
and i had to get it pass the test at trafik station, it passed whit no remarks and i got my licens plate ,
got licens plates 24/2 -2020 i am so happy happy happy
I love 928s it is awsem, it is a manual 5speed transmisjon and white gold metalic paint.
the 928 is my fav car in your garage, hands down!
Go with your gut feel, get the seats and fabric back now. I've learned the hard way to rely on the gut instinct.
Super Porsche man ain’t saving 541t. You can do it!! Love the video’s keep them coming. That is a really nice leather cover I’ll have to check it out. I did a ‘cheaper’ one on my car with it in the cars. It was summer so ran the ac while doing it.
I can concur that the shifter play is very much on the loose side, plus the long throws.. Like a truck. They make a couple of short shifter kits, one has different implementation than the other and for that reason, one is is probably the better choice (can't think of the names of the kit off the top of my head unfortunetly). It might be the one one aftermarket piece that you want to put on the car to enhance the driving experience.
Glad to see the 928 back! Love your videos
I put it on x1.5 and it sounds like you're on some precious white powder, ludicrously popular in the 80s
Bond and Beyond if you put it on half-speed he sounds a bit “special”....
_Changes to 1.5x_
Fucking hilarious!
Ever since I saw weird science as a kid iv always wanted one. Once I learned about these I wanted one even more. V8 Porsche that's best of both worlds iv always wanted to soup up one of these.
Classic 9 interiors in Dearborn Mi. makes a proper dash replacement cover, DIY or send it to them and it will return perfect, they also do the Pascha seat covers properly and have done more than anybody in the USA
Can confirm, that's a non-interference engine. Same as in my 83. Shift linkage was always sloppy and has a HUGE amount of throw, like driving a bus lol. Synchros tend to not wear very well, my 1st gear synchro is completely gone. Looking forward to more 928 vids!
I fixed the dash and pod cracks on mine. Read the Rennlist posts, several have gone before. Dremel out the cracks so the foam “walls” are at an angle and you have removed the dead crumbly foam. Fill with fibreglass reinforced bondo, and sand the whole dash smooth. I covered mine in leather without a bunch of French stitching, you could also source a dash specific paint. The vent trim pieces can work with any dash, just source them and modify your dash by removing some foam around the vents... that’s what Porsche did.
I will likely never work on my own cars to the same extent, but it’s inspiring to watch you do it. Also, wish you’d talk about how best to deal with the upholster situation. That would be helpful real world advice.
Don't cheap out with the plastic dash cap! I'm going to re do the dash in my 928 and I'd love to see you do yours.
I’m getting ready to attempt the dash in my 944 turbo. classic9leathershop has kits available that allegedly match the Porsche leather. I’ve not ordered mine yet but they come pretty highly reviewed and have tutorials on patching up the old dash. I can’t wait to see how this restoration turns out. I’ve wanted a 928 for a long time
The shift bushings are worn in the front and most likely the back as well, tight area but doable with torque tube in place
I’m hopeful the seat upholstery is worth the wait when it’s all said and done.
I had a truck in a transmission shop after they rebuilt the transmission and it broke again in only 9,000 miles. After six weeks of waiting, I got it back with a completely brand new transmission, and the shop had also chased down the underlying electrical problem that caused my transmission failure in the first place! If it had been anything engine related, I could have fixed it in my garage with the help of friends, and tools they could lend me. Being a transmission issue, it was very frustrating, because I know squat about automatic transmissions. The transmission hasn’t broken again since, so it definitely was worth the wait. I had almost given up on it at around the 4th week of waiting, but they got it right in the end.
Hoping the same happens with the 928 upholstery. 🤞
Watching every second of your 928 videos.
Have you ever done business with Steinel's in Twinsburg? Years ago I worked at a place right behind them and was in awe of all the Porsches always parked out back. Never been there as I'm not quite yet at a point in my life to have a Porsche of my own, but thats thr only reason I even know the place exists. Haha.
You can sand down the cracks to be level, fill them, and then recover the dash in vinyl or leather. I did mine in stitched fake leather, but I've seen a couple people that did it in vinyl with no seams. That would probably match a lot better with the console and door panels. I don't know if the first couple years had leather options, but the leather cars did have plastic trim pieces around the vents. You can trim the non vent dash to fit them (I used a non leather donor dash for my car). Sometime in the last couple years (90s) they had a different style of plastic vent that was larger.
If you do send it somewhere classic 9 leather shop in michigan would be a good choice. I got my cover from them.
Another great video. Plus one on fuel lines and don't forget to do it on 944 as well. Don't want to see your hard work going up in flames. I got my 944 ones from rennbay (no affiliation)
Three cheers for the 928!
You are not alone. I'm waiting on parts for my 944 turbo and the guy I'm trying to buy the parts from responds only sometimes. I'm trying to give him business but I think the 944 as well as myself are kind of paying a price for that.
Shifter play is most likely due to the coupler “ball” bushing directly under the shifter wearing out, or just completely deteriorating to pieces, which happened to mine (full disclosure: it’s a pain to get to without dropping the torque tube!). You can get the ball couplers on 928 Motorsports, 928 International or 928 Specialists relatively cheap. If that’s not causing the play there’s another coupler/pivot point towards the back near the transaxle that also likes to puke out bushings. Good luck! Really looking forward to watching you restore this 928!! May even light the fire under my butt to get back to mine.
Ever since Risky Business I've wanted a 928.
Give Sharp Finishing in Toledo a shot. I've been very with their work on my parts including wheels. If your Monroe powdercoat place is who I'm thinking, still around, just not in Monroe. Plenty of folks in Toledo area very happy with them as well.
Looking forward to the finished 928. I saw one on Facebook market place with the checkerboard fabric for short money. It sat for much of its life. Unfortunately a Porsche snob snatched it up before I could look at it.
Thanks for making vid, can't find "custom leather steering wheels" link would be much appreciated.
cant find the allen dunn leather on ebay or google, plz post a link
Casey, where did you buy this? I need one for my '84. Thank you
Casey, if they don't want to do the job, for whatever reason, don't push it. Go up, drop in, get your stuff before it gets messed up.
K-Jet functions primarily by fuel pressures, system and control pressure, only vacuum line that effects mixture goes to the WUR, all other vacuum lines are for your regular stuff like EGR, vacuum advance, charcoal canister, etc. . And can you post a link to the place you purchased the steering wheel wrap kit?
Is it a bmw isetta ?
My idea for the dashboard would be to cunt the cracks out, glue the whole thing back to the metal, fill the cracks in with fiberglass filling or any other filling, sand it down to be smooth, cover the whole dashboard with a thin foam and on top of that, cover it with real leather. then you would have a soft padded leather dash that won't crack again.
Another cool video sir, that being said the 928's rear end is just ..... not my thing. But watchin this while fabbing sheet metal interior panels for my project. Keep up the great work brother.
"I like big butts and I cannot lie!"
@@BoGanora lol it is extra big hatch back booty.
Most leather since the early 80's is "fancy painted" FYI....just restored my 928 and (86.5) and researched it thoroughly....and "it's all paint" unless it's super high end or special order. Again...RENNLIST was a huge help there along with UA-cam!
I never thought I would see casey yanking his knob this evening
Casey I have access to a 1988 928, and it is being garage kept in Florida. However, I will only be able to keep it covered outside. Will this truly ruin it? Also, what cc is that Honda, it looks a good size for me :)
Nice sweater Casey!
Is the seat restoration going grossly past deadline ? Are they not being communicative if you don't call them ?
Glad to see you got the manual transmission. A lot of them I looked at were automatic.
You can do it!!!
Can I buy the 928 after you are done with it? I feel you will treat it right, and when you’re ready to move on to another car, this one will be a nicer choice than the typical Craigslist used car listed.
Just have amish put leather on it. lol. Where do you get parts or affordable replacement parts . Looking at Porsche now. Lol. Any way to get parts or decent ones ? Lol.
I have Berber tweed in my 944. My passenger and rear seats are perfect. I am trying to find this tweed and someone credible to replace it on the driver’s side seat. It’s Berber tweed backed with vinyl.
Casey can we get an idea of what this restored 928 with pasha seats will sell for ?
MUST must must must replace rubber in fuel lines! Must! The rubber is over 30 years old and in NA we have ethanol in our petrol which also likes to breakdown the rubber. The fuel lines are under 50 PSI (Or something like that) which is happy to cause a rupture to the rubber spill fuel all over the top of the engine and burn the car to the ground... Seriously this is a must before any serious driving. If you do drive it 10lbs extinguisher or two... I did a blog about this with the relevant details for my 1983 928. Link below...

Casey, if you need door inserts and various other 928 interior parts, there are a number listed on Craigslist in Green Bay. Let me know if I can help.
That 'dorky middle bit' of the steering wheel is the closest you could get to an airbag in the 1970s. It's specifically designed not to shatter in an accident and protect your face from the metal underneath.
I had a dream last night you were working on a New Mr2 w me in my hometown how odd!!!!!
You bought a Meserschmit. LMAO!
Change the water pump and tensioners when you replace the timing belt.
Shift boot on, restoration complete.
Question do you think it is worth it to buy a 928 with a bad transmission that needs to be replaced, also how much do you think it would be to replace? It is a 1982 with an auto transmission
Check Ebay. Not sure, but it all comes down to time and money. You can figure it out. Just give it some thought. You got this.
I had one this interior might as well be mint compared to the interior is my former car
I need more info restore the eBay steering wheel ,because I am restore my wheel.
Hate may ensue but I'd love to have the stack to build one of these with a Ford Coyote as power, if it would fit.
Junkyard dave in Colorado on UA-cam built his own powder coating oven. Send them to Dave? Colorado and Michigan close together?
Oh and here is a link for a company that does the interior stuff for the 928...
www.classic9leathershop.com/porsche-928gts-928gt-928s4-928s-928/
AGLA has been doing leather for YEARS.
What's the name of the shift boot and steering wheel company? You gave them all kinds of props but not a way to find them on eBay.
It's the same as the steering wheel cover, he showed their card.
If you were really committed to irking "Porsche snobs" custom is the way to go. They hate my 80' SC with the supercharger. "Cause it's not original"...
If you want some ideas check out 928motorsports.com/
Funny that he has a batmobile too coz Bruce Wayne drives a Porsche 928 in the comics
please do more 944 vids
Heat gun the dash my brother .
I think the new arrival is a Volkswagen Thing
I'm an interior repair tech. It is much easier to reupholster steering wheels attached to the car.
If any body interesting.... i have a Porsche 928 S4 1990 in a perfect condition has only 6 thousand kilometres and original paint (purple) and white leather interior.
It's for sell right now .
Casey, sounds like you should trust your gut on the rehupolstry company your seats and door cards are at...
“Who’s the u-boat commander”
You must be old to know that😄
Early 928 5 Speed... Your double de-clutching skills are going to useful with this car.
I'd say get your seats and fabric back now. Better to wait for a better shop than get back messed up seats after waiting for those dudes.
Just find a dash carpet and call it a day.

Check out the throtl channel, they have a good video on restoring a cracked dash for around $60.
Will you get a Volkswagen Beetle or Volkswagen Type 2 T1 van, or something else from them in the 1980s, or even pre-1980s? Maybe a Wartburg or Trabant? Surprise us with a pleasant, size-y Mercedes-Benz or BMW from the era? Audi Quattro?
Ah, anything to get the rich collector snobs riled up, when cars were literally invented for driving, whether it was for pleasant stuff, or going to work.
I just made a deal on a Scirocco
Get your sears back ASAP.
Neun Zwei Acht...ja!
Yea im always ruining something ...
