I’m finally looking for my first 928. 59 yo who remembers a neighbor who was a lawyer taking me for a spin in his brown 1979 928 when it was new. I was 14 then.
    What a car!
    I’ve owned 2, 2001 966’s. One a turbo. Loved them both. I certainly want another 966 turbo, but I’ve always wanted a 928!
This greenish metallic with the Pacha interior is stunning. Beautiful car!

Amazingly all the exotics of that era were wedge car designs and Porsche went a different direction and it’s paid off in the end as a more tasteful design. Something about how daring the design was while still being aesthetically pleasing proved out over time who won that competition. While the 928 was so ahead of it’s time and the bias against front engine water cooled Porsches. People who have accepted that fact and the air cooled vitriol dies of old ago… the 928 will rise from the ashes and history will vindicate it in every way. Expect them to continue to popularity not known in their own time.

Love the styling. So beautiful. I love these tail lights more than the tail lights on the 1990s versions of the 928. If I won the lottery and I could buy some classic sports cars, I’d buy a 1970s-early 1980s Porsche 928 with those original tail lights and a Lotus Espirit.

In 1979 I was 13. My father took me to a local Porsche/Audi dealership ( he as looking to buy an Audi). I was not particularly into cars. When I walked into the dealership there was a new 928 on a small circulating riser. It was that crazy metallic white pearl color, and there were multiple overhead lights in this building, making the car appear almost like a spaceship. I was immediately hooked. I never saw anything like it, anywhere. 45 years later, I remain a fan of these special cars.

The Porsche 928 is the sexiest car ever made. This has been my dream car from the moment I first saw a picture of one in the early 80's. I still hope to eventually be able to afford one. Thanks.

I have been collecting up the 928 cars since 1990. I enjoy your perspectives on the car and appreciate you taking the time to inform folks on many of the important points of this fantastic car. This car has been my favorite Porsche car since I first saw one of the first models in the US in 1978.
I have a series one and have kept it for 15 years . I am now inspired to start the restoration finally.

The styling of the early 928 and colour combo of the interior with that green put it in the same bracket as the Lamborghini Miura IMO. I have a 964 and now I want a 928 too! STUNNING and very inspirational👍🏻👏🏻

Excellent narration. ... Good Lord, this car is one of the most timelessly gorgeous, aesthetically pleasing cars of all time. There's just something about it. (And the early models are by far the best! Gotta have the huge, round back for this car. The newer models are just so compromised, so "safe"-looking)

Stunning example of an iconic design in a beautiful colour. The first production car to have vacuum sealed doors as well as passive rear wheel stear if i'm not mistaken. I had good example of the less sought after 81S with UK spec 300HP 4.7 litre for many years and planned to ship it to Thailand to enjoy in my retirement but the authorities put a complete ban essentially on private imports just before my retirement.

Love that color. Had a blue 1980 imported euro automatic and couldn't stand the lame Merc 3 speed auto so I sold it and picked up a 79 5 speed manual with the 220 locking differential in opal metallic gold with a brown interior. This car is a true Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde between the manual and the auto and I just don't get the sports car + automatic transmission thing. That's what AMG saloons are for. When the weather breaks I will be going the the K-Jetronic fuel injection this year. Not sure elsewhere but you will see the majority 1978-79 without sunroofs at least here in America.

Very unique colour for sure, and with combined with oem wheels it looks great✅
The Pasha trim takes a bit of getting used to
I have a 1982 Manuel in Platinum in mint(not concours) with engine upgrades (Euro Specs) ,headers etc and when it’s on song,it is superb
As they all are ageing, one of the biggest problems is electrical,as under the hood gets very warm
You have to be prepared to “Tinker”with 928’s which is ok
As you say they are great 👍 to drive, you don’t tire, the balance is really great!

I really enjoyed this! I'm 52 and this is the car I have dreamed of owning since I was a kid, I remember when it first came out, the "new" Porsche was so futuristic and captivating. My bedroom walls were plastered with 928s instead of Ferraris, I did once almost purchase a '79 model from a friend of my father
(in metallic brown) but I chickened out because it would have been my only car at the time, and as I live in a place where it snows a lot (and has a lot of steep hills!) I worried about getting around with the RWD in winter. I have yet to buy one, but maybe once our son is finished with college I will finally seek out just the right one. I do love all 928s (the S4 came it changed the appearance too much from the original design for my taste however) but the series I always takes me back to when I first saw one on the road and thought it was the coolest car I'd ever seen, like a space capsule for the highway!

    • @Dutchmann_official
      @Dutchmann_official  2 роки тому

hey - we decided to keep the window trim as is. I feel that it shows the car's age, and actually adds to the classic feel. The wheels are simply stripped and resprayed in in a metallic silver to keep things OEM. These wheels were originally sprayed silver by Porsche.

A very nice car, in a great colour.
I have recently bought a 928S2 (ex UK). I wanted the early look but with some of the improvements, and extra power, of the update. I also swapped the forged alloys it came with for teledials because, again, I wanted the earlier look.
I don't think the teledials I got are quite in the right colour, or perhaps it's the gloss. Do you have any advice on what the correct colour code would be?

Only in ‘78 was the auto the rare transmission. By ‘79 model year Mercedes was supplying plenty of automatic gear boxes. But in ‘78 only 10% of total model year production was the automatic transmission! I have a Euro ‘78 in silver just like this. Unfortunately an early owner added the side rub strips and thankfully they added the passenger door mirror.

  • @jamesbradford8574
    @jamesbradford8574 3 роки тому

I'm a former owner of a 1978 928 with a 5-speed manual. I prefer the manual, but if I was commuting long distance to work or something, I might appreciate an auto. I wasn't planning on buying one, but when I saw one advertised at a really low price, I couldn't quite believe it was a good as the seller was claiming. I looked at it out of curiosity only, and quickly fell in love with it. I wish I still had the car.
All-aluminum, 45 degree V8, aluminum hood and roof (and iirc front fenders also), electronic fuel injection. For a 1978 car was that was designed much earlier, it compared very favorably with competing cars of the time -- i drove a 1978 Corvette before buying the 928 just to see if the 928 was as good as I thought it was, an indeed it outmatched the Vette in every regard -- more power, EFI instead of carb, etc. Styling is strictly an opinion, of course -- I loved the 928 and I also love C3 Corvettes, styling-wise.
I changed my water pump, and since I had to remove the timing belt to do that, I put a new belt on. Removing the water pump (after getting a flywheel lock tool) was easy, as was removal of the alternator, and changing the timing belt. Those basic accessories were simple to work on and change, but I understand bigger jobs, like transmission work, is an expensive headache.

Love the car, love the color, love the interior, love the video. Thanks for making it. I'm not sure, however, I agree that "everything about the 928 was built for luxury." I think that is the standard assumption that has been told and retold over the years, and stems from the popular (mis?)conception of the 928 as a "softer edged touring car." I personally think this is incorrect.
My personal opinion is that the 928 suffered from an identity crisis from day one, and was conceived and developed as something more than just a "touring car." I think it was conceived and designed, for lack of a better term, as a sort of... "1970's supercar." The best, most potent thing Porsche could build. A car to go head to head with things like the Ferrari 512 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage. And the performance, the Miura-esque headlamp treatment, and the overall look and feel all fit with this concept. But by the time it actually came to market, winds inside Porsche were changing direction, and the 911 was reestablished as the marque's standard bearer for the future, so the 928 had nowhere to go. As a result it came to market as... something else. A "gentleman's touring car," if you will. But early models, despite being more comfortable and refined than something like a 911SC, were never direct competitors to the Jaguar XJ-S or Mercedes-Benz SEC. The early 928 was always much sharper edged than those cars, much less accommodating, and vastly more potent as a driver's car.
I have no problem with the automatic gearbox. None at all. But I think it plays to a misconception about the 928, namely that it's best for poking comfortably around town and commuting its well-heeled owners to their suburban dental practices in stylish, leather-clad, isolated luxury. It's how Porsche tried to sell the car, with pretty poor results, but it's NOT what a 928 was ever particularly good at. It's what a Jaguar XJ-S was good at. What a 928 was good at was menacing supercars of the day with much, MUCH more vaunted pedigrees, and eviscerating roadways, both straight and twisting, with a combination of power, chassis balance, precise steering and powerful braking that few cars could match, including the 911 Turbo. And looked at with those eyes, I think the 928 is better suited to a manual gearbox.
In short, and again, this is just my opinion, painting the 928 with the "luxury tourer" brush misses the point of the car. It's a vastly underrated driver's car. Something that can run neck and neck with a Ferrari Boxer or Aston V8 of the period, yet with the reliability, refinement and build quality we have always come to expect from Porsche.
Gorgeous example. I took two years to buy mine also (a 1982 S model with the M28/11 drivetrain) and I applaud you for ultimately choosing such a stylish Series 1. It's stunning.

I just bought a red '88 GT with 16 thousand miles on it. A brand new 928. Cost me $88 thousand. Original sticker was on it - price was $76 thousand.

I'm a fan of the 1980 cars,. That was the first year the cars had the 928-branded steering wheel instead of the same general Porsche wheel used on early 924 cars as well as the 911. The 1980 also had a simplified console with just the analog clock, but no added spoilers. To me, the 78-79 cars are just a little too "pure." To each his own, I guess.

Nice video, but you should have addressed more detail on the engine, suspension, brakes, etc. Although its nice to go over the cosmetics but I would like know about the stuff the really matters. I just spent tons of cash on my 928 engine, suspension, etc .......timing belt, water pump, electronics, suspension, interior gauges, etc................

Thanks for the feedback. An issue with the gimbal motor, which we discovered after the take. Corrected as best possible, but best listened to at a lower volume. Shall be corrected for all future videos.

Mate I like your car collection and that 928 is a beauty but you may want to invest a little more on the camera equipment in particular the microphone.
The sound is almost painful for today standards. Otherwise great video.
