At 30 years after leaving the factory my 928 had no mods, no rust, no fender or door dents, just a few minor nose dings from stones. Built like a tank, drove like a dream with the 5 speed.
Great information. I just bought a red '89 GT with 16 thousand miles on it. It's like brand new. Cost me $88 thousand USD. Doing a major service, replacing belts, pumps, tires, etc is another $15 thousand or so. I'll only drive it between March and end of Sept and swap it every other day with my 911 to keep the miles down.

I searched for nearly a year before landing one that checked all the boxes you mentioned. 1990 auto, 2 owner with mileage correct miles, and interior in great shape. Thanks for watching Christophe!! Don’t be scared of the 928, it’s an amazing car. Find one with up to date maintenance(so you’re not playing catch up), and it’s an easy car to keep up! And, very rewarding to own!
@@HernanSpeed No, it's not an easy car to keep up. A 1975 MGB is easy to keep up, not a 928. Look at the electrical on 1:35, it is a nightmare to fix. Most Porsche mechanics do not even want to touch them.
1000% correct about the interiors. You will spend a fortune trying to fix an interior in these cars and it will never look right or feel like it's supposed to. Bought an '88 928 S4 auto back in 2007 or so. It arrived off the truck with the timing belt tensioner light on... and thus it began. ;-) Turned out the timing belt service wasn't too big of a deal to do. Steering rack went next and surprisingly it wasn't that horrible to do either. Then the bearing in the torque tube went. That was, uh, a bit more work. ;-) Dropped the rear transaxle out of the car with the suspension in a friend's shop and got a rebuilt tube from 928 International. The only nerve wracking part was getting the new torque tube in to perfect spec to avoid crankshaft damage. I'm not mechanic but these cars aren't nearly as bad to work on as many say.
Yesss! Sounds like you’ve got that 928 in nice shape! 💥🚀🚀 At first most things can seem overwhelming, especially the timing belt…but it’s totally doable. Yes Kristian, it’s almost all about the interiors with 928’s. You can still buy a new dashboard from Porsche for about $2k US, but that’s just the dashboard...the Pod is an extra $900. How about the rest of the interior? Big $$$. Take your time and find the nicest one, they’re still many... Also, the hunt is part of the fun 😎 Thanks for watching!

Bought my first 89' 928s4 with 60k in 96'...torque tube was a whirring so 3k later and a set of 993 rims and I was a go... until my wifes brother wrecked it while visiting.got rid of that...eeek! Number 2 came along shortly after Allstate came correct on my payoff and it was a 90' 928s4 6 spd black on black baby! OOOh that car was so fast! anyway traded for a 97 boxster when they came out...blah how boring can one get? So I let Porsche go for 20+ yrs until recently I picked up a beuatiful 2000 996.1 with all the maintenance done and I am back to being happy again...without the brother in law!!!!!!!
Love the story! Sounds like your back in the Porsche family! I bet lots of great adventures coming with your new Porsche 996! Maxalwaysgoesbyboat thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
How much does an accident history affect the overall value of a Porsche 928? I have recently found one in a guys garage that has been sitting there for 20 years. Time capsule immaculate interior. Exterior is beautiful, only issue that I know of that I’m concerned about is he told me there was a front end accident that was repaired prior to his purchase in the 90s
It’s part of its history.. Does it have a rebuilt/branded title? Or was it a fender bender? A CarFax will show if it was serious, or just a small accident. If the owner has the receipt of the work done, even better ✅
Hi, I just came across your videos. Long story short,...I am highly interested in buying a 928. I am no Porsche expert by any means so, let me ask. If I buy a good one a really good shape and parts are needed, does Porsche still make official parts for the 928? You mention the seats and dashboard being cracked, does Porsche sell the dashboard and seats for the 928? Thank you so much.
Yesss, Porsche is still making original parts + there’s also lots of aftermarket solutions for any issues. I think you’ll find that the Porsche 928 has more support/resources than most cars….it’s actually one of the biggest reasons to buy one: The Community. CHECK OUT: Rennlist 928 forums. The dashboards are still available new, but you might have to call around different dealers. Most people want black, so that’s the hardest to find…but you can easily paint a new burgundy dashboard black with SEM Dyes (worth it!). Seats are not as easy to find, but if the car has under 100k miles…the seats should be perfect 💯💯 The best time to buy is the Winter, prices easily drop 15%-20%. Take your time to find a minty one☝️ Gary Segraves thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
You’ll love an early manual 928! Define better? It’s already a great gearbox, it just should not be speed shifted. These cars were often driven like race cars, and well…the sincros don’t like that. But if the transmission on the car is shifting perfectly, chances are really good that it will stay that way for a loooong time. Hope you find a cool one, the hunt is half the fun! Thanks for watching! 🔥
The Porsche made transmissions from 1978-1984 have the weaker synchros. They’re still great! But can’t be speed shifted like modern transmissions. If care is taken, they also last a long time. The newer updated Borg Warner designed transmissions came in after 1985 + . These drive like any normal manual and very little attention is needed when shifting gears ⚙️ If you’re looking to buy a Porsche 928, I would go for condition first. If the car has been maintained properly, you’ll have lots of fun and nooo headaches😎 F Aitken thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Hi Noah, checkout prices on interior parts in ebay. To redo a cracked Dashboard, it’s $1300+…just the dash, not the pod. That being said, there are lots of ways to do it on the cheap if you don’t mind it looking ‘just ok’. A plastic dashcap is cheap, but warps fast. You can also add 944 seats, they bolt on….but it starts looking… you get the idea. Noah thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Don’t worry, I’ve also done it before.. I’ve discovered that the best solution is getting a parts car that already has a good interior, they pop up for sale all the time on FB marketplace. Many of these 928’s get parked for extended periods, the fuel pump freezes and they get sold as non-runners. These are the deals if you’re willing to do the work. -Get parts you need, and resell the rest… You might even make a few 💵👊
@@HernanSpeed you just described the way I bought the car. It sat for two years and it's not running because of the fuel system. Thanks for the tip. I will definitely be looking that way.
The automatics on the 928’s are GREAT! The manuals are a little bit more fun, but the autos are fun also! The 928’s engine has so much flexible power, you’re skipping gears during normal driving on the manual anyways. Drive both and you’ll see what I mean. If buying an auto, I’d go for the 1983+ years.. Why? Those are 4 speeds VS 3 speeds in the earlier cars. Big difference in driving. The transmission is a Mercedes unit, so it also lasts a loooong time! Krzysztof Slowinski thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
@@HernanSpeed thank you for replying. The 928 has been one of my dream cars since I was a little kid. Never got a chance to buy one but now I am really thinking of getting one. Thank you very much for the advise on the transmission. I really wasn't sure what makes more sense. The car definiately wouldn't be my daily driver so wouldn't use it a lot. I just want to own one of those beauties.
🥲😳🥲 well I saw this video 2 weeks to late. I bought a 79 928 with 73k. Arizona sun beat the interior to crap. I thought it was going to be easy getting it restored inside now this vid has scared me. I hope I don’t end up regretting my purchase.
JJ thanks for watching! 🔥🔥 Congrats on your purchase! 1979 is a great year, it’s got the CIS fuel injection…simple-simple ( a good thing!). If the car is running well, restore as you enjoy. Half the fun in owning a classic is finding parts and restoring. Put up a search alert on Google for the dashboard/pod, those will be the hardest to find (but they’re out there!). Don’t stress, it’s a beautiful car and when you finish restoring it… you’ll soon be looking for the 2nd one! 😁
Also, if you’re not picky about originality. Newer front Porsche seats will bolt right on, all 964 993 944 968 seats will bolt on… no mods needed! Boxster 996 997 seats will need the tracks modded, but it’s also done all the time.
Yess, and I can tell you that they’re also probably not in the best shape either. You can also try searching on Facebook marketplace & groups…nice seats pop up from time to time
@@HernanSpeed yes someone in the 928 group on Facebook told me to go to 928intl and precision Porsche. They are both about 80-100 miles from me. Supposedly they are the best in SoCal. Thankfully I am somewhat mechanically inclined. My dad an I restored a 64 Corvair the only thing we sent to the shop was the interior and paint, but we pulled everything out and reinstalled everything ourselves. Motor and trans we took apart and put it back together in the back yard. I’m excited to tear into this 928. This will be my first project on my own
You’re right, I could definitely go deeper into detail on each point. I’ve tried to condensing each video because of the algorithm, but will definitely be trying out longer format vids in the future. Brian Miller thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Good info in the vid but if you're going to toss in a side pic, make it for more than 1 freakin second. It's like you're trying to do something subliminally. Very distracting. Slow it down and let it soak in.
Thanks for watching Terry. I know what you mean, I agree 100%. But... I’m doing this for several reasons, the subliminal part is only a small part. It’s more about the algorithm..
Thanks for the feedback! I totally understand… We do it for the algorithm, it’s what works in retention. It actually could use more edits, Mr Beast has 47 cuts in a 30 sec video 🤯 We’re not professionals, learning as we go! 2 Bike is Life thanks for watching! 🔥🔥

Also, the hunt is part of the fun 😎
Thanks for watching!
I read these 928's have to be driven not not stored as a memento. Things go wrong from it not being driven enough.
Correct, they prefer to be driven all year long. I’ve had small things go out from having them in storage, little things like window motors. The good thing is that most items are easily fixed/replaced, and lots of DIY tutorials everywhere!

My grandfather hired me to sell his 928. I'm going to try and arrange a purchase. Wish me luck on my second classic!
Try Bringatrailer, great place to sell if the car is in great condition. Best of luck!!
Regards from Miami!
@@HernanSpeed sounds good! I'm going to inspect it, it's been garaged for years, but I might buy it if it's in good shape!
Don't forget about those pesky torque tube bearings
True! 💯 💯 From my experience, that’s more of a maintenance item and most have already had them redone ✅ Good thing is that it’s very obvious when they’re starting to go, lots of great aftermarket upgrades too!

Great video! I just bought my first 928 based on this video. Is there a 928 club in the states? I’m in Los Angeles. Thanks
CONGRATS! 🍾 Love to hear stories like this! Start by joining ‘ Porsche 928 Owners group on Facebook, you’ll find many 928 groups on there… all great people. You’ll also find great local groups on FB, huge car communities out there in LA!!

Thrust bearing failure previously happened to my one unfortunately
Michael, sorry to hear that. Yes, as I mentioned it can totally happen….although still rare! If you’re watching these vids, something tells me your in the hunt for another one ✊🏼🔥🔥

Bought my first 89' 928s4 with 60k in 96'...torque tube was a whirring so 3k later and a set of 993 rims and I was a go...
until my wifes brother wrecked it while visiting.got rid of that...eeek! Number 2 came along shortly after Allstate came correct on my
payoff and it was a 90' 928s4 6 spd black on black baby! OOOh that car was so fast! anyway traded for a 97 boxster when they came
out...blah how boring can one get? So I let Porsche go for 20+ yrs until recently I picked up a beuatiful 2000 996.1 with all the
maintenance done and I am back to being happy again...without the brother in law!!!!!!!
Love the story! Sounds like your back in the Porsche family! I bet lots of great adventures coming with your new Porsche 996!

Nathan, thanks for watching! 🔥
Seats are not as easy to find, but if the car has under 100k miles…the seats should be perfect 💯💯
The best time to buy is the Winter, prices easily drop 15%-20%. Take your time to find a minty one☝️

Is there anything you can do to make the manual gearbox better on the early model?
I'm thinking of buying a 928 🙂
You’ll love an early manual 928!
Yeah when people touched or modified it when they should not have, may mess up the car.
💯 💯💯💯
what manual trans model years have the synchros like glass?
The Porsche made transmissions from 1978-1984 have the weaker synchros. They’re still great! But can’t be speed shifted like modern transmissions. If care is taken, they also last a long time.
The newer updated Borg Warner designed transmissions came in after 1985 + . These drive like any normal manual and very little attention is needed when shifting gears ⚙️
If you’re looking to buy a Porsche 928, I would go for condition first. If the car has been maintained properly, you’ll have lots of fun and nooo headaches😎

Honest Question, if i find a 928 with a bad interior and i plan to add new seats and re-do it, is it still ok to get one with a bad interior?
Hi Noah, checkout prices on interior parts in ebay. To redo a cracked Dashboard, it’s $1300+…just the dash, not the pod. That being said, there are lots of ways to do it on the cheap if you don’t mind it looking ‘just ok’. A plastic dashcap is cheap, but warps fast. You can also add 944 seats, they bolt on….but it starts looking… you get the idea.

It’s hard to find good cars. Also, do a video on the different models you owned.
Jason this is very true! The hunt for the perfect car is always fun though. Will do, many more vids coming up very soon.
Looooove it 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for watching!
I guess I'm screwed. I just bought one with a bad interior 🤦🏿♂️
So you're saying an automatic makes more sense than a manual?
The automatics on the 928’s are GREAT! The manuals are a little bit more fun, but the autos are fun also! The 928’s engine has so much flexible power, you’re skipping gears during normal driving on the manual anyways. Drive both and you’ll see what I mean.
If buying an auto, I’d go for the 1983+ years.. Why? Those are 4 speeds VS 3 speeds in the earlier cars. Big difference in driving. The transmission is a Mercedes unit, so it also lasts a loooong time!

Love this ☝🏻 🔥🔥
🥲😳🥲 well I saw this video 2 weeks to late.
@@HernanSpeed oh thank you thank you. I will check them out. The seats I’ve found on eBay out of another 928 were like $1500.
This will be my first project on my own
this is why you better buy a car in - original - condition, be it bad, but always better than a bodykit spoiled car.....
100% Facts! Thanks for watching Max!!
Problem is you don't explain why on your points for mostnpart
You’re right, I could definitely go deeper into detail on each point. I’ve tried to condensing each video because of the algorithm, but will definitely be trying out longer format vids in the future.

What the heck is with the meme edits. There is a point where it's too much, and you've far exceeded that limit.
Thanks for the feedback! I totally understand… We do it for the algorithm, it’s what works in retention. It actually could use more edits, Mr Beast has 47 cuts in a 30 sec video 🤯
