The reason for the dogleg 1st gear shift pattern, I believe, was the racing shift pattern for the time. 1st gear was primarily to get you off the line and the vast majority of the gear changing, 2nd through 5th, was inside the H pattern. You forgot to mention how the whole instrument cluster moves up and down with the steering wheel when adjusting the steering wheel height so the gauges won't be obscured by the steering wheel. That was one of the coolest features of the driver ergonomics.

Back in the 80's I was out in Texas on I-10 late one night and running wide open in a 1985 Mustang GT and one of those blew by me and disappeared, I was impressed.

I love the 928 more than any other car. To me it is the most beautiful car in the world. Some day I hope to own one. Too many get ruined with the wrong wheels and aftermarket steering wheels. It's good to see this is original with a manual transmission. Thanks.

Jeremy Clarkson used one to speed home before his dad died. If he says "so in my book, it's alright" - that's probably the highest form of praise from an auto critic.

50/50 weight distribution with the rear transaxle offsetting the big V8 upfront, something much overlooked by your typical American pony car buyer. Weissach axle keeping the semi-trailing arms from toeing out and oversteering under braking (which could be looked at as a downside for those who like it wild!).. There are so many neat things about the 928.

I have owned (or it owns me??) an 1988 S4 5spd since 1997. One of the best cars I have every owned. Still turns heads to this day. The idea of the dog leg is to put 2nd and 3rd and 4th and 5th in line with each other. Very little time is spent in 1st or reverse, so this puts 2,3,4,5 in a nice "H" pattern. Otherwise down shifting means you spend more time moving the stick side to side. Makes a lot of sense if you think about it.
There was a lot of cool engineering in the car.. amazing job for the day. Funny to see cars of today copying a lot of what it did decades ago.

I always liked the 928's , we used to refer to them as eggs. Because they did look a little like an egg.
I understand Porsche wanting to move on. But I'm glad they didn't, I think if the 911 was discontinued. Then brought back it would have gone the way of the new Beetle.
One thing for the 911 it is just as iconic as the original Beetle. Someone at Porsche had the foresight to keep this car going. When you look at a 911, most people say Porsche. Porsche can make whatever car they want. They can never get away from the 911 it is forever the flagship of Porsche. Why not, they are fun cars. But that doesn't mean other cars can't be fun too.
Except SUV's, they suck. Especially for a guy driving a 911.

    • @aaryeshg.6526

Can't deny how Porsche made an SUV that is able to handle and go like a car (955 Turbo Ss can hit 170 mph, an SUV from early 2000s that can reach such speeds lmao).
Porsche started this Super-SUV trend that we have now with the Bentley Bentayga, Lambo Urus, Aston DBX.....
Sometimes the manufacturers we love also do some weird things that are just hateful, even if it sells well. 😂

Also, thanks for the insight on the 928, it is much appreciated. I basically have my choices for my next car (first sports car!) narrowed down to a 928 or LT1 powered C4 Corvette. The Porsche sounds like a LOT more car for the money if one studies up on how to properly maintain it.

    • @Luke-lw9dg
      @Luke-lw9dg 3 роки тому +2

C4 corvette is definitely the most car for the money you can get, period. 928 you’re paying a HUGE premium for the badge, and infinitely more on maintenance. Source: I have a 944 and my brother has a C4. Even the L98 C4 picked up for 5 grand will go 140 on a road with a 50 mph limit and some 35 mph cautions.

Maintenance and parts cost on the 928 are the two areas where I'm apprehensive. I've test driven '86 and a '94 C4s...I love the early car's looks inside and out but the build quality of the later car is much improved. A big, brash American needs a big, brash American sports car I suppose!

Great car, great interior. There used to be a time when cars were cars, not InstaGram backgrounds, and by golly were they cool back then.
The one sad thing about the Porsche brand for us, is the fact that from the poor man's Ferrari brand, they turned into the next Ferrari snober's group. I swear, at least here in Europe every 4th owner of a Porsche you meet, is one you want to punch.
And i know everyone and their mother loves the BMW brand new indicator joke, but in my experience, whenever i commute by bike, it's almost always Porsche (modern car) owners that i nearly back end because they change lane without so much a spit. That and Prius owners, which i swear on my life, it's like they fear the indicators or something, like it would drain their battery in a flash.
Anyways, great to see this project completed, it's a nostalgia train of old good days, when things were simpler, before the internet was established and i could hitch a ride with my brother and eyeball the next car we could buy for a cheap fix for a summer and ride to the new owner.

Am actually debating a Pascha interior for my Nautical Blue 944S. I’m on the fence because while I know it would just set that car off, but it’s the door cards, the rear seat and the fronts and that’s going to be big bucks. If I go 11/10s on something like that I’d better want to sleep in there every night. Just rescripting my fronts is cheaper but I’m ambivalent on that option too.

I seriously considered buying a 928 GTS because I've always loved the design, that big, 8 cylinder motor, and wanted to be a U-Boat commander, just like Tom Cruise!
But I just couldn't wrap my head around that dog leg gearbox. Couldn't do it. 😕

I'll let you in on a little known secret, Casey. The Nikon D3300 DSLR camera is the last model of that line of cameras to feature an audio input jack, yet the camera still takes 24MP stills and records in high definition. You can find a used one for less than the price of a flagship model of GoPro. I'm sure you could find a lens that would suit the tight quarters of a car interior.

About twenty years ago or so i traded my 1990 Mazda RX-7 turbo to a friend for his 928 to drive for a week. The 928 was a manual car and my Mazda had a racing beat exhaust so it sounded wonderful and had more power (3" downpipe, +64hp, no cat or airpump) than the stock car so the cars were close to equals, the Mazda was faster. I also had recently beaten both a corvette and a 928 in an autocross event so the Mazda being lighter than both also handled better. The weird dog leg shift pattern of the 928 was a bit odd but the most annoying aspect of the car was how loud the engine was in the 928 with a fair amount of old hot rod feel that the car had. My friend and i both liked the Mazda better, it was a more refined car and the quiet and smooth rotary was more enjoyable to listen too although the torque of the 928 motor made it feel faster. Today i now own an '83 944 and an '88 RX-7 convertible. The RX-7 is so nice to listen to with the racing beat exhaust i put on it but kinda loud on a convertible, the 944 feels fast with its generous torque but the Mazda is so much faster at higher speeds. (both non turbos) The 944 is the better handler and would be a better car on the track, especially short twisty tracks like Black Hawk farms, the mazda's need more room to get up to their superior speed, a track like Road America is better for a mazda. I have raced both tracks in SCCA road racing events. I love both cars and the superior quality of the body stiffness on the 944 is impressive but overall the rotary wins me over. The best part is driving these cars on the streets today, the envious looks you get from the people driving SUV's are priceless.

928s are sneaky fast. The top speed on my 1987 S4 is 171, which was as fast as the 911 Turbo. In today's context, we don't think 171 is that impressive. But think back to the 80s when Camaros & Mustangs had 220-250 hp and couldn't go 130mph. Then it looks impressive.
