🛒 Here's the switch I would reccomend if you can't wait to find a Shopsmith switch, or if you just like stop signs! amzn.to/4apXNpO You'll see lots of similar switches on Amazon, but this one has the longest cord and is appropriate for 15 amp motors.
🛒 This is a generic (non-Harbor Freight) version of the magnetic paper towel holder: amzn.to/4cHbgL5
🛒 Search eBay for "Shopsmith SPT Switch" for listings. "SPT" stands for either "Single Purpose Tool" or "Special Purpose Tool". Shopsmith Inc used both definitions and the creator of the SPT's didn't use the acronym at all, so take your pick!

HF has deadman foot switches. Make sure it is the momentary on, when you release it it shuts off. I own several of them. I use them on the lathe, table saw, band saw, router table, and scroll saw. On the table saw it is great when cutting large pieces and you need to reposition yourself, lift your foot, blade stops, move and step on pedal. Never have to take your hands off to turn it off and avoids kickback. Same with the other tools, never have to take my hands off the stop the machine. Been using them to over 20 years.

This use of the towel holder is an excellent idea! HFT has several other magnetic accessories in their collection, including a spray can / screwdriver holder and a cup holder that might come in handy. I have several of the round magnets that I use in my RV van for various purposes. They come with a tough plastic film to prevent marring of surfaces.

Kind of unrelated but HF sells the magnetic tool holder. I owned a metal building (10' x 12') and mounted two, one vertically on each side. Open the doors and the magnets keep each door open. Lots of uses for magnets.

For my Mark V I did a mount very similar to your Chopsmith rail mount for easy movement. Maybe not optimal for working off the end or in drill press mode unless adding a magnet, but for saw/disk sanding/boring it works great.

I am not a fan of foot switches for any tool other than a swirl saw. I used to have a foot switch on my dust collector, and was shocked how often I accidentally stepped on it and started the dust collector. I can only imagine if that were a saw, and I was changing a blade or making an adjustment.

A few years ago there was a fellow who had reconfigured the Shopsmith Power Pro switch - mechanism ? I saw it twice and thought it was really good. I believe he was informed not to persevere? Anyway again his approach was to me (I did not have the PPRO then) was a marked improvement.
What options do I have - do I remove the on/off switch and wire in a movable switch? When using the bandsaw cutting long wide slabs with the auxiliary tables extended, support poles etc, the on/off, control panel is way inconvenient.

Safety switches are good. But is a segmented bowl blows up the best answer is step away to your right. You for sure do not want to step across to the left side. But there is for certain away I person can intagle with a tool like a lathe. I seen in shop class (in votech machine tooling) a 17 year old boy get pulled into a engine lathe. The person behind them stomped the E-brake. Very gross.. it involved degloving of the face plus ponytail removal plus broke his arm in 3 places. The person behind saved his life. He was using a sanding strip and wrapped them around real close to each other. It rolled him up. Head between the chuck and bedway.
In fact that would be one hell a good lesson to teach on the lathe. Never put more than a 90 degree angle on the sand paper. I have seen to many people onliner do it too. It may not happen the first time it might not the 30th time. But I promise you it will get you. Trust me seeing this is one lesson I will never forget. The machine looked like it was on a halloween movie set! I to this day have never wrapped sandpaper or anything else around a moving shaft
But that is a great Idea and a good repurpose for some cheap magnets and get a good cord holder.

They should not be used as enabling or disabling switches. You can end up compromising good body positioning to keep the switch activated and expose yourself to worse injuries. Foot switches are on the floor where dust, shavings, and other debris collect and can affect the operation of the switch. They can present a trip or slip hazard. Area sensing mats were at one time common as safety devices for industrial equipment, they have long since fallen out of favor. Foot switches are also not commonly used for machine activation in industry equipment because they leave your hands free to be in equipment. Trusting a single channel switch for safety is a terrible idea. There are exceptions to everything , but your position is an outlier, not a standard.
