Hey just some points to clarify. The International ALLIANCE of Stage Employees has 150,000 members. This strike authorization vote is specifically for Hollywood production unions dealing with the AMPTP. Those locals of the IATSE represent about 60,000 employees.
The strike authorization vote was after multiple deadlines for negotiations on a new contract have passed. The members of those locals have been working under an old contract that considered streaming services ‘new media’. Essentially they are getting less compensation than box office productions would because streaming services were considered ‘unproven’ at the time of the original contract’s ratification.
It’s also important to understand that what we are asking for isn’t just higher wages or benefits. We are asking for a stop to 14 hour work days. We are asking for guaranteed meal breaks. We are asking for the kinds of protections that have been considered reasonable for a century for all workers in the US. Do we get OT and other penalties for violating these protections as compensation? Yes. But we also do not have an option. If we do not accept the OT and meal penalties we can be fired.
Thank you for making this video Beau. My union brothers, sisters, and kin and I all very much appreciate it.
My opinion is a majority of US people very much would benefit from a highly publicized strike in Hollywood.
Good luck and I hope you can come to a decent agreement without the hardship of a strike. Union strong!
Solidarity!! This is what unions are for. I hope working conditions improve!
To say nothing of how many >12 hour days people are often made to work in a row. 12+ day weeks are far from uncommon from my sources in the industry, and these are not days of light work either, even before getting into the frequently abusive behavior in the workplace from people above.
Unions are especially vital because production companies give even less of a fuck than normal about the long-term wellbeing of employees they're planning to lay off in a matter of months when the production is done anyways on top of the usual exploration artists are expected to put up with to be "allowed" to make money practicing their craft.
Theatrical brother here, standing with you.
I don't see food, water, breaks, and using bathrooms as workers rights. They are basic human rights.
Just remember a robot costs less and doesn't require any of those things. The only things preventing everyone from being replaced are the interruption in production and old people being to out of touch with modern technology to know they can replace us all.
@Bud Riley and now is the perfect time to get rid of the people at the top
Denied to many (myself included)
@Bud Riley Two Words: French Revolution. It's all bankrolls and cigars till someone brings out a guillotine....
It according to conservatives, they will tell you that's being entitled 😂
"Unions just strike whenever they want something" is a weird way to spell "the industry keeps screwing over workers".
Never forget, strong unions and worker protection regulations are the _compromise_ position to protect those who do the work from those who just happen to own the tools.
When you're denied and you ask civilly and you continue to do your job, you're told to be happy you have a job. They want to do a Reagan!
Unions (Socialism) are the friend of the working class (The People).
Wealthy elite (Capitalists) are friends only to their own greed (Fear).
_“Of all the liars in the world, sometimes the worst are our own fears.”_ --Rudyard Kipling
_“One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn’t do.”_ --Henry Ford
_“I have learned over the years that when one’s mind is made up, this diminishes fear; knowing what must be done does away with fear.”_ --Rosa Parks
_“Fear makes strangers of people who would be friends.”_ --Shirley Maclaine
Unions need a good reason to convince their members to strike, members don't want to go without a paycheck. Thank the unions for 40 hour workweek and 8 hour workday, child labor laws and many other worker protections.
It's certainly a capitalist way of spelling it... Exploitation for all, and those who wanna be exploited a teeeensy bit less, they are just spoiled babies... Goddess I despise the fact that actual real people have that mindset.
Without unions, no 40 hr work week
No sick leave, no annual leave, no retirement, no health care, no workers' rights.
not to mention, child laborer, something that was quite commen untill unions
Young folks today have absolutely no idea of working conditions in the past and most likely wouldn’t believe you if you told them. “Fake News”. I and many of my generation are decended from those who fought and sometimes died for them. And would not believe that the police and sometimes the Army and National Guards as well fought strikers. Today’s complaints about “Police Brutality” pale in comparison to the treatment of folks in the past.
ABSOFRICKINLUTELY. We need to bring them back much stronger.
Thats Bullshit. Working conditions are negotiated between employer and employee and supply and demand decide the wages and conditions. The goverment FORCING shit on the free market only fucks things up and increase the costs of hiring. All that shit you listed is the law now. And employers have to do more than that to attract good workers. Do you really think that employers only treat works well if the goverment makes a law saying they have too? No, a good worker does not need a union. A shit one not only needs a union the union is all he got.
@@adennagruetzmacher6076
Unions are made up of the employees - not government. Unions enable employees to negotiate with employers on an equal footing.
Government is supposed to be beholden to the people - not Big Business, Banks and Uber rich. As the Unions lost power, corporations and private soecial interests gaind power at the expense of the public.
When actors and directors are paid $millions for just showing up and the people who make their performances possible make minimum wage, the budget needs to be reworked.
To clarify, the issue is not with actors. SAG-AFTRA has voiced their support of the IATSE as has the writers guild.
More actors should put the stipulation for crew being treated fairly into their contracts like some have had for inequality in pay between genders for other actors on the film.
We the 99% create more than 99% of all of the wealth. Then the 1% use the wealth they steal from us to buy the laws that allow them to steal 50% of the wealth we create.
Remember that only a miniscule amount of actors get paid millions. Most have to have 2nd and 3rd jobs just to stay afloat. Kathleen Turner was still working as a waitress when Body Heat was released.
Bear in mind, the vast majority of actors are not paid anything like millions. The vast majority are paid scale. And there is no job security. They are working gig to gig.
Many of the actors who are paid millions of dollars, like Ryan Reynolds, for example, are very publicly supporting IATSE on this issue.
We live in a nation where "corporations are people," but people themselves are not. I support the Union and the strike.
Well said!
I can definitely get behind this! No more treating people like disposable commodities.
Or corporations like people. 😉
Funny how the all lives matter crowd are ok if you work yourself into the grave. Being a wage slave is "work ethic" and the "lazy" people who don't speak English are stealing their jobs. To quote Stanhope. "Do they do your job training in pantomime?"
Why? The only reason any human works at all is never immune a robot, we are disposable.
In capitalism, the best labor is slave labor, best materials/resources r free and the end goal of the company is a monopoly. So, it’ll ALWAYS strive to reach THAT point of ‘PERFECTION’. People, environment, freedom etc., none of it can stand when it comes to the pursuit of profits; u can try. But history is proof that it’s a game of cat and mouse, and people get tired but corporations r relentless, connected, resourceful, and strategic. People can barely even get their pants on before the corporations have already changed the laws in their favor. Classic David vs Goliath. Except in real life Goliath wins a lot more often and squashes David like a fly.
For most of history people have almost never held power for more than a few decades. Usually it’s due to the Euphoria after a war. But soon after, corporations start taking their power and the position at the top back.
@@RojaJaneman Sounds like America and Slavery..
I was glad to see this. Collective bargaining has become a joke in this country. Unions have lost their teeth, with negotiations being drawn out long after a contract has expired. Workers need a slice, the crumbs aren’t keeping us fed.
Not to mention with some unions being built on vertical hierarchies now. Those that're built like this see all the money floating to the top - just like the corporations they were supposed to be protecting us from.
Someone needs to remind the wealthy that the reason there are unions is so people don't drag billionaires out of their homes and kill them in the street.
I hope more unions remember where there power lies: the shop floor. Not the ballot box, not the board room.
You can thank Tennesseans and Kentuckians, they led the RIGHT TO WORK movement in the 1980’s.
They may be the auto manufacturing Mecca now, but their wages and benefits and employment protections aren’t what they were when all the St. Louis manufacturers left St. Louis in the 80’s and 90’s.
We the rest of the people must stand behind them. Always!
United we Bargain , Divided we Beg.
I like this.
And what is the one single phenomena that has allowed the very very few to so completely dominate and oppress hundreds, thousands, and even millions of times more people than them is: *bigotry, the great divider.*
Maybe it's time we humans dealt with that phenomena as a whole? Because so far just dealing one or a even a few of the many various forms of bigotry has only created more division.
That is why there is so much unfairness in government & business ! "Keep 'em divided against each other, then we can steal 'em blind" is the motto of politicians & corporate elites.
Businesses will say that retirement funds"Well that is what social security is for.". While doing everything in their power to get rid of social security.
And social security is only supposed to match 40% of your income from when you were working which nobody takes into consideration when making comments like that.
@@QueenChalora They do take it into consideration, they just don't give a shit.
So a bit of inconvenience for me, so other people can have fair wages and better working conditions?
That's the kind of thing I wanna see!
It's the people who screamed bloody murder about only getting one packet of sauce with their chicken who will have a problem with it.
I can handle a delay on, say, 'The Book of Boba Fett' or Mandalorian s3 for the sake of the workers. This is the Way.
I have tears in my eyes. As a member of IATSE, the theater, live event side (not film) you just made me tear up. It's not just about bennies though. It's much about dangerous working conditions. Less than four hour turn arounds (no sleep). No meals and craft services (on site catering) being told NOT to feed the crew (only talent and production...directors etc). 20 hour days...over and over. Hard, hot or cold or wet....who knows....work. These are highly skilled people. Replacing them is not so easy. Thank you for being your normal pragmatic self about this issue. We need the publicity!
I've had to sleep under a stage at a concert because 14hr drive for load in and 5hr drive to the following venue and then a 18hr drive to the next. No reserve drivers. Sf to pdx to Seattle to Sacramento. 17 straight 18hr days on that tour
Thanks Kim, for clarifying the issues , I too am a member in a stage local ( live event). I had an opportunity to become a member of a motion picture local but I'm an old guy so declined. I knew I couldn't hold up to the consecutive, long hour days.
Stay strong, comrade. It's about to get a lot harder for you guys. Corporations aren't known for just rolling over, even to an organized workforce.
They will pit you against each other, they will drag your name, they will do anything they believe they can get away with to just shut you up. We are here for you. Solidarity.
“REPLACING THEM IS NOT EASY”
Please remember that when the greed monster try’s to scare everyone back to work. Band together and they will have to listen. I say STRIKE.
I support my union brothers and sisters who are only asking for a fair contract. These people are serious about their jobs. Please support these workers, along with those others who are willing to withstand the slings and arrows from their employers and the rabid anti union talking heads.
This is what happens when top get good packages and lavish lifestyle and the below get peanut with poor welfare.
And it's been going on for literally thousands of years. The saddest part to me is that there is but one issue that creates the possibility for this to occur; *bigotry, the great divider.*
wow, a "Florida man" that understands the importance of unions, I am absolutely impressed. I was a member of iatse, it's a really good union, and it is about time they flexed their mscle for the membership

"They just strike whenever they want a raise." Even if that was true.....yeah, and?
How DARE they think of themselves as humans worthy of dignity, says Capitaliism.
It’s asking for decent pay, but it’s also reasonable hours, reasonable turnaround time, ability to literally sit down and/or eat a meal during a 12 hour day (or longer), or use the bathroom during the day.
Like teachers lol
Sad like this sort of stuff still has to be fought for!!!
And this benefits literally everyone. It is even in the best interest of the wealthy elite (the sole benefactors of conservative-capitalism) to have a friendlier, healthier, and all-around much safer world to live in.
Workers around the world need to put up a united front against the tyranny of the conservative-capitalists.
I miss the days when more than 7% of workers where unionized . I started my working life in 1981 . Reagan started busting unions and retirement put out of reach for most bluecollar workers . The rest is history
@@GrievenceCapitolist facts Reagan started the trickle down bs that the right still rides his nuts from the grave. Also the reason like cars and other production when outside the US. Also had many other racist policies
A bit of inside information on this one, the money isn't even the main thing. Better working conditions like less insane mandatory overtime being constantly dropped on people without warning is the bigger concern so people can have a life outside of just working, eating, and _maybe_ getting 8 hours of sleep.
Exactly. This is bigger than money.
Exactly the purpose of a good union. To provide protections the corporations will not. If the corporations will not comply at the negotiation table, then a strike is an effective bargaining tool. Best wishes to all union members.
Eliminating "short turnaround" is another important issue.
Having had to do the 12+hour day on no notice, I know exactly how that feels. But, that was also in another field, so I can only imagine the pain and toll on their bodies.
@@dillonhounshell9786 yeah, and doing 6 in a row without being able to reliably get lunch and then being told you need to work on your Sunday too as you're leaving Saturday is no joke.
When I was a kid and my dad's union was on strike, anyone who crossed the line and went to work was a scab. Do not cross the strike line!
It's incredible to me that the people who work in this industry don't get proper treatment and compensation given the amount of money that is generated.
So they are now willing to negotiate after they fear a strike. They don’t care about their workers or they would have not stood for those conditions. They just see their revenue going down if there is a strike.
Sadly, almost no one cares about their workers.
#WelcomeToCapitalism
@7 Haunted Days then we tear down their sets. We sabotage their productions. We make things as publicly uncomfortable for as many individual executives as we can.
When I was younger working in aerospace, I got down on unions because I saw firsthand the abuses. Much older and marginally wiser, it is patently obvious that owners will do what it takes to maximize profit & minimize contributions. Still acknowledge abuses but I realize the greater abuse comes from the more powerful. My opinion.
An imperfect remedy to a completely caustic system.
Amazon next! We must support the Union.
I'm gonna be upset if my favorite shows get delayed. I'm gonna get mad at the studios who would grind things to a halt rather then treat people fairly.
Many of my costume friends, who have had a rough time of it during pandemic when it comes to working for Hollywood, are ready to strike. PAY ARTISTS.
Reminds me of the woman asking Picasso for a sketch on a napkin. When he told her the price "That took you two minutes! "No it took me 40 years and two minutes" or something along those lines.
I’ve been a union man most of my working life. Those who have never benefitted from union protection and representation don’t understand the need for such a thing. They are continuously fed a load of garbage (misinformation) by employers who desperately don’t want them in their workplace. For example, unions are often referred to as communist. Well I am comfortably enjoying retirement today thanks to the hard work and protection my communist friends offered me. All I can say is thank you.
You dont get 98% buy-in on anything without reason. At minimum its worth looking into the situation further.
People that hate Unions forget that they are enjoying staples that came from them, without having to be in one, ex.... a livable wage, the weekend, holidays (+ Holiday Pay), banned child labor, safe working conditions, healthcare, maternity leave, lunches + breaks (even smoke breaks), 8 hour days and Overtime for when you go over the 8 hours, as well as other perks.
Solidarity with the workers! Enough is enough and we need to support our strikers
Why is it sooo hard for some people to give a shit about others? I'll never understand.
Bigotry: the great divider.
IATSE Local 871 in the house (22+ years)! Thanks for addressing this!
Honestly most of the shows I watch aren't Western, and thus have been delayed for months at this point because other countries are _still waiting for vaccines._
Working in the Film Industry for nearly 50 years... it is fun, but tough... regular 100 hour weeks, not knowing where the next 'gig' is coming from... pay negotiable (usually with the companies having the upper hand)... this is why Unions are good.
Also necessary it seems. Been to some sets here in northern and eastern europe and they seem to treat their crew way better than they're treated in the us. There is room for improvement like everywhere but still. Everyone involved knows it takes a village. So might as well make sure the village is fed, warm and gets a good nights sleep now and again. Also paid a decent wage. Sometimes the us looks a bit like the middle ages from over here ;)
Live better, work union. When people say unions are useless I remind them good unions are workers in that field. They stand up for workers, because for the most part they are workers. If your coworkers are not standing up for you, it's time to join the union and clean some house. Don't be a scab. Don't cross the line of people fighting for better working conditions
That's what we need. People not divided by bigotry, so we can actually get things done.
So we will no longer remain wage slaves for the sole benefit of the wealthy elite.

But that alone doesn't make my point fully. Since we know historically that conservatives almost always vote, something they can rightfully be proud of, this means that other than the voter-suppressed (who obviously lean left), the overwhelming majority of people who do not vote lean to the left.
Essentially non-voters are by far the largest voting block.
Much of the problem is hopelessness. Not that I blame them for feeling that way, I have been one of them myself. That's why I keep posting these numbers.
The good news is that historically speaking, we non (and or less) bigoted, are absolutely on the winning side. All we have to do is never give up on freedom (and defining _freedom_ for those who don't understand it). ^-^

Good morning Beau, and all the internet folks! I'm all for the "little people" on the set to have equal rights to eat and use the bathroom.
Not "little people". Actually the term is "those who work below the line", i.e. not directors, producers, DPs, editors or actors. It's a bookkeeping term. And yes, while those above the line can take breaks, eat and use the bathroom, not so, as I understand it, for everyone else. That certainly has to change.

I would actually argue that the reason for the delay in your favorite show is some people/companys etc not giving people healthcare, retirements etc. It can all be avoided. And the ball is squarely in the court of the employers.
I just looked up the salaries of professionals like stunt doubles, prop masters, and set designers and the average salaries for all of them are about $20K/year less than I make at a desk job - and I don't work in California or New York where those salaries won't even cover basic living costs.

Collective bargaining is the best thing that's happened to the working class in America period.
The bargaining power of an entire group of people will always be greater than one single person. Support us, because our work supports you.
Reading some of the comments. Didn't see this much "togetherness" when Volkswagen in TN or Amazo trying to form their unions. Not saying there wasn't, just didn't see it.👍✌✊
Stagehands are a very tight group. It's not just a job, it's a lifestyle!
If a show gets replayed, and re-sold, the producers, the main stars continue to make money. Yeah, the other people who make the shows possible should also continue to make money for their efforts.
Continued income keeps people off of welfare, and from becoming homeless old people.
It sounds good to me.
This is exactly what the song "I need a dollar" was talking about, the writer is the top streaming artist on streaming media yet he was only paid around $10,000 for a song that has generated millions for the companies that stream his music, they do a great segment on this on the Daily Show
Solidarity forever.
"All them eager actors gladly taking credit for the lines created by the people tucked away from sight is just a window from the room we're bound to." Modest Mouse
My husband and I met on a production and he still works on a major show and a member of IATSE... all they are asking for is right ...especially the working hours 14 to 16 a day 5 day weeks... and the worst for us is working a evening shift on a friday and not having a full weekend , he works until 1 to 2 am on a friday our saturday plans get changed because he needs rest for his health... and they stopped sandwich O'clock that helps when working crazy hours... just give them what they ask for or negotiate, they are professionals in their field experts and do back braking hard work for shows that bring joy to others... Thank you Beau for talking about this support is what we need!
Love that you’re wearing Marilyn’s likeness on your t-shirt. Most people don’t realize how often she spoke out against those who run Hollywood about how much they over-work and disrespect actors, because that was her experience. She was quoted as saying, “An actress isn’t a machine, but they treat you like one.”
She was also one of the first women to start her own production company, Marilyn Monroe Productions. Her symbolism as a sex icon only skimmed the literal and figurative surface of who she was.
How can I support them in more than just words? What action(s) can I take to help?
Pay attention to the ongoing situation and do what the organizers of the strike action request. Right now there is no call for boycotts or any similar action. That may come in the future. So just try and stay on top of the story and maybe follow IATSE’s Twitter account so you can support us in way’s that our leadership deem helpful.

The fact that people might actually feel outrage over delayed TV shows is about as clear a symbol of entitlement as I can imagine.
Right after "I can't get a haircut " or "I can't get my nails done". My heart bleeds for first world problems.
I've got some friends in IATSE, and they all get ridiculous schedules when a production is happening, so I'm totally sympathetic to the demands being made. I just hope that the studios don't pull the sort of fuckery like when they invented "reality tv" to weaken WGA during one of its labour actions.
"Reality" TV has a LOT to answer for. A whole lot.
They want to be treated as essential not expendable.

TPTB in Hollywood have the attitude of you're damn lucky to be here - everyone wants to work here. I have first-hand knowledge that the abuse is insane.
A member of my family belongs to IATSE. Conditions for workers behind the cameras are at times akin to the sweatshop factories of the last century. The family member recalled an instance where they had to work over 12 hours a day 24 days in a row. Many don't receive overtime pay, percentage of profits, or royalties. I'm okay with delays in show/movies/etc., if it means everyone involved in a project is treated like a human being, with a livable wage and working conditions, as well as a chance to partake of the profits if the project is successful.
No workers. No profit.
Day by day, workers gradually awaken from our century-long slumber.
Day by day, workers around the world are learning that a war has been waged against them since the beginning of history.
And day by day, workers move ever closer to the breaking point, to the moment when we all finally realize that things don't have to be the way they are, and push far beyond the limits of our broken and uncaring system.
As a retired union member you are only employed by the length of your contract....Most of the contracts I worked under were usually 3 years...
IATSE Stagehands Local 51 here. Thanks for your voice good sir.

Get it, friends!
I hope this all rings a mighty warning bell for all employers. Treat us fairly or we too will form unions.
Remember the writers strike nearly a decade back? That was the most productive and illustrious time for Hollywood. New formats got chances and ideas were tossed around that would otherwise never would have had a chance. A strike must not end all fun. It can be the start of much more fun. Especially when those striking get better wages and are happy to work. The best I remember from the strike back then: Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. This is still epic to this day (no pun intended, Felicia...).
If you get such jewels AND working people getting paid more...that I call a win-win.
Curious to see if & what big name stars, producers, directors show support. And how they do it.
A big thing is the streaming services “new media “ almost pay half . And 13-16 hour days 5 .5 days a week starts to beat on you . 481
Got a crazy aunt who thinks unions are “socialism”.
Woo unions! Everyone should unionize. Collective bargaining is one of the few ways we can fight back
Hello, good morning
Hi!!!! 👋🏾🙂
I stopped watching TV shortly after my oldest was born. To keep me distracted from potential insanity (figuratively speaking), I listen to podcasts and YT videos. Beau of the Fifth Column is my favorite.
