Summary: United we Bargain , Divided we Beg.
Years ago, when I was in a union, I heard a guy at a gathering complain about unions. He was complaining to an architect. The architect waved his hand at the guy and said that every time he worked with a non-union construction company, he had problems with the job. "Unions provide training for their tradesmen (and women) and they have the skills needed to get the job done. I don't want someone putting up a building for me that doesn't know how to do the job"
The phrase "only a fool represents himself" doesn't only apply to courts.
if a union was no problem for a company, why are they fighting tooth and nail to hinder their workers from organising?
I belonged to a teacher union my whole career. Trust me! It was necessary.
They can get rid of one but 100 is harder to replace. Absolutely spot on.
Unions are the working class's only real leverage. Solidarity.
Ugh. In what sense is an individual going to get a fair deal going against a corporation by themself?
Imagine yourself trying to stand up against a group of bullies. Now, imagine you standing up with all your friends at your back to hold with you. Tell me again about individual bargaining, cause companies are bullies looking to take your time to make their money.
Losing one worker is not a big deal. Losing hundreds or thousands is a massive deal.
Just like it's always best to represent yourself in the court of law right? RIGHT???
Big corporations spend millions trying to prevent their workers from unionizing. Why do people think that is? Strong unions create benefits even for non union laborers.
With the top 1% owning as much as they do, unions are essential.
People saying they are anti-union who aren't management or owners are exactly the type who are constantly working and voting against their own best interests. History has shown us what employers will do if they have no organized opposition.
A lot of problems are solved with a $40/hr union job and a hobby.
Unions built this country, gave us the 8 hour work day, 40 hour work week, and some enterprising Italian guys from New York City even used their pension funds to build Las Vegas.
"It's always best to represent yourself." I
Imagine if each of the founding fathers went to King George personally asking for no taxation without representation? It would have been laughed at and probably thrown away in jail each of them for treason. Bargaining together gives power.
One of the executives at my company said that we're all lucky we have jobs. The thing is...one wildcat strike, just in my department, would cause the company to lose millions every minute.
There's ALWAYS power in mass. That's why the constitution says "WE the people"
