when she says that SOAD calms her down.... for a lot of metal heads thats pretty much what we get out of metal quite often. some of my favorite metal bands are very relaxing for me to listen to.

I was used to sleep on the bus while listening to slipknot, so yes metal is relaxing.
Any metal/rock I like I can fall asleep to. Linkin Park? Yep. Trivium? Yep. Cattle Decapitation? Yep. It doesn't have to be soft to be be calming, if you enjoy something, it can relax you. People don't seem to understand that when it comes to metal.

System of a Down’s Serj Tankian sings Game of Thrones track “The Rains of Castamere” Anyone i introduce to SOAD I always tell them to do a Wiki read on Serj Tankian to understand what they are listening to. His story will blow your mind. What an amazing person.

The two main song to describe this comment are Empty walls from the Elect the dead album and Holy Mountains.. they both give insight into his past, and the struggles he has had to face in his lifetime.. while very political, he faced many political atrocities and this is his way of fighting back against them or raising awareness of what's actually happening behind closed doors

So funny story about a spider: my senior year in high school, so like 9 years ago, I was watching TV in my living room at night and saw a BIG (similar to the size you described) spider by the dining room about 10-15 feet away. Not wanting to get up to go fuck with it (yeah, I'm kind of a bitch), I grabbed a tennis ball that was right next to me and threw it at it. I hit that bastard DEAD ON... and he walked away. Didn't run, WALKED away. I let him live there after that.

Understatement of the century
I absolutely love this song. One of SOAD's best in my opinion. About the little alien kid: Shavo (bassist) in an interview with the Phoenix New Times explained that the little alien-looking boy is actually himself. He says "I've always felt alienated. So I made him a little alien-kid." He further explains that back then it took him weeks and a lot of CGI money to come up with the face and nowadays it's a simple phone filter. He further notes that back when the song came out he refused to say who the kid was. "Now, 20 years later. I'm telling you."

But the music in general is so good. Their most underrated album for sure. I mean, "The Highway Song", "IEAIAIO" , "Boom!" , "Mr. Jack"
That album feels like they were making exactly what they wanted to. They always sound like that, but this album in particular was like nothing was holding them back.

So glad you loved this album! To me, there are 3 bands that mastered making metal for non-metal fans.
1. System Of A Down for combining catchiness and finesse with hot and interesting topics
2. Deftones for adding shoegaze and dreampop alongside rhythm to make a boiling pot of subgenres
3. Gojira for focusing on the rhythm and pummeling riffs combined with powerful production and compelling guitar techniques.
I think your next album reaction should be either White Pony, Diamond Eyes, or Saturday Night Wrist by the Deftones. I suggest White pony if you wanna tackle the fan favorite, Diamond Eyes if you're looking for cleaner and heavier sides of Deftones, and Saturday Night Wrist for a look at their brilliant atmosphere building.

I've interpreted this song by the "we drank from the river and we turned around to put up our walls" line, like we exploited nature and we turned our backs from it.
The overall theme of the song is our mistaken views of ourselves as being individual and isolated from the rest - mankind and other lifeforms - and how we actually are a tiny part of something greater, from wich we come when we are born, and to wich we go when we die. It speaks of clinging to life and not accepting death, cause we see death as an ending, not as another step of existence. When we die, our matter is decomposed and is transfered to things like worms that feed on us, to the atmosphere in the form of gas, and to the ground and plants that feed on him. We are always moving through the cicle of existence, there is no stillness, only movement and transformation.

I first discovered system of a down when I was 13 or 14, even since they have been my favorite band of all time no matter if I still listen or not. I believe this is why I've questioned events my whole life because of this band and what they articulate and sing about. I became an addict but I" still had the power of knowledge on my side and continue to mend my broken spirit!! ARTO is a little gem at the end of the album that I would listen to in the shower and I would get out at about the time the album was ending, SOAD is a gem to me and will forever always be in my mind and life.
