Dude, my grade 11 teacher let me cover the explicit version of this song as long as I broke it down responsibly. Needless to say, I had the coolest project, made classmates jaws drop, and got an A+. No joke.

Watching this in June 2020. The world needs Rage Against the Machine more than ever.

i always saw the repetitive lyrics as a symbol for how this keeps happening over and over again. racism never stops. and it's also about drilling the message into your head by saying it repeatedly. it's pretty hard to forget the lyrics. you can see it in how the singer is pointing in the music video as he says "some of those who work forces are the same that burn crosses". it's as if he's commanding you to understand. this song is next level.

This song actually has some additional history specific to the UK. For several years throughout the 2000s, the British version of The X Factor talent show (the name of which is also kind of a slap in the face to the metal community as it flagrantly dangles the name of an Iron Maiden album on a commercial property that represents the antithesis of everything they stand for) had been dominating the sales of the Christmas Number One in the music industry. The number one slot at Christmas was always especially coveted in the singles chart, and had seen many intense battles from industry greats over the years. People were starting to feel disenfranchised with the way that in recent times, that talent show had started acting as a capitalist conveyor belt, drawing in consumers, wrapping the show up just before the holiday period in order to sucker people into buying it for their loved ones while it was fresh in their minds.

First time I ever heard Rage was seeing them open Lollapalooza 1993. First band of the day, basically nobody knew who they were, and they had the whole place going apeshit. Thousands of people who had never heard of the band before just having our minds blown. Never seen anything like it since.

Man, I remember I was introduced to this song in '97 and was given flak for being late to the game. Glad you're getting a chance to enjoy the music. It's meant a lot to a ton of folks over the years. keep up the good work.

If you listen to that song live, the second verse hits you with “Some of those who burn crosses, are the same who hold office.” That line straight up have me chills!

I love that his train of thought was interrupted by Tom Morello's slaying

There is a reason that Rage was once considered the most dangerous band in America. Their anti-establishment message scared many in seats of power.

This song proves that you don't have to have a lyrical overload to push a powerful message.

Songs like this makes me sad for people who are stuck in any genre of music. The emotional power and what’s being said is so much more than the few words. Brilliant music. You feel it.

I first heard this song as a 15 year old high school freshman and although I wasn't an asshole about it, I definitely took this song to heart and made school admins and teachers wish I'd never heard it, because I definitely wasn't buying much of the bullshit they were selling so to speak.

Tom Morello is an amazing guitar player & does crazy amazing things with a guitar. He's really good. It's amazing & sad & really disappointing that 27 years after this song & album were released we are still dealing with the same problems Rage Against The Machine wrote about in their lyrics. The way it feels now it's like these issues have only gotten worse. I still have hope for our country, but it gets harder everyday. Keep up the good work & keep spreading positive messages, it's appreciated.
