@@dinnerboi25 based on what react said, they changed it in the studio when they recorded the album version. i always saw the repetitive lyrics as a symbol for how this keeps happening over and over again. racism never stops. and it's also about drilling the message into your head by saying it repeatedly. it's pretty hard to forget the lyrics. you can see it in how the singer is pointing in the music video as he says "some of those who work forces are the same that burn crosses". it's as if he's commanding you to understand. this song is next level.

This song actually has some additional history specific to the UK. For several years throughout the 2000s, the British version of The X Factor talent show (the name of which is also kind of a slap in the face to the metal community as it flagrantly dangles the name of an Iron Maiden album on a commercial property that represents the antithesis of everything they stand for) had been dominating the sales of the Christmas Number One in the music industry. The number one slot at Christmas was always especially coveted in the singles chart, and had seen many intense battles from industry greats over the years. People were starting to feel disenfranchised with the way that in recent times, that talent show had started acting as a capitalist conveyor belt, drawing in consumers, wrapping the show up just before the holiday period in order to sucker people into buying it for their loved ones while it was fresh in their minds.
In 2009, a man named Jon Morter started a Facebook campaign to purchase the single "Killing in the Name" by Rage Against the Machine en masse during the week that sales would count towards the charting of the Christmas number one, as a protest against the manufactured stranglehold that Simon Cowell was beginning to have on the country's music industry during that holiday period. The group ended up with just shy of 900,000 members (of whom I was one). The choice was a little tongue-in-cheek, chosen especially for the anti-establishment refrain "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me", and garnered widespread media coverage, even going so far as to add the idea of it being unfair on the winning contestant to play into his sob-story narrative (no hate to the guy in question, he was an unfortunate casualty, a victim of circumstance). It became so topical that Rage were actually invited by Radio 1 (the UK's prime radio station, and part of the BBC) to perform the single live (which would be a super-fun thing for you to react to) to which they obliged. It was from the States, so it was very early in the morning UK time, but many of us woke up just to hear it.
The battle became so intense that Cowell & his label decided to make the finalist's single a charity release, so that the proceeds would go elsewhere, and deter people from supporting the Rage song. As a response a donations page was set up so that supporters of the RATM campaign could also donate if they so chose to the British homeless charity Shelter. The page raised over £70,000 for the charity. On 20th December 2009, Radio 1 revealed on their official chart countdown that Killing in the Name by Rage Against the Machine had claimed the Number 1 spot for Christmas, selling 502,672 digital copies (setting a UK download record), and beating out the competition by about 50,000. As promised if they hit the number one spot, Rage Against the Machine played a totally free concert in Finsbury Park, London (chosen at random lottery from members of the Facebook group), where they also presented a cheque for £162,713.03 to the homeless charity Shelter, which included the combined donations of the Facebook group, as well as all additional royalties from the sales of the single made during that week. It was also one of the few times the band had performed together over the few years prior, and led to them getting a lot of slots at European music festivals the same summer.

And the fact that real racists have become more and more emboldened of late, coming out of the shadows to spread their version of hatred.

Seeing your jaw drop listening to old school Metallica, Pantera, Rage Against the Machine etc... reminds me of exactly how I felt first hearing them back in the day. What I wouldn't give to hear the Master of Puppets album (or their entire first 4 albums actually) again for the first time. It's a masterpiece from top to bottom. If you feel like hearing a great long Metallica instrumental then check out "To Live is to Die" off of the "...And Justice for All" album. "Orion" off of Puppets is another great instrumental too. Also, That whole first RATM album is f-ing ridiculous too. So good man. My hats off to you.

It's amazing & sad & really disappointing that 27 years after this song & album were released we are still dealing with the same problems Rage Against The Machine wrote about in their lyrics. The way it feels now it's like these issues have only gotten worse. I still have hope for our country, but it gets harder everyday. One of the things that makes this song so brilliant lyrically is the repetition. He keeps hammering the same simple message, racist cops, over and over and over again so that the listener can not forget. Remember, this was 6 months after the LA riots, which were set off by white cops being acquitted of a hate crime that they obviously committed. This song perfectly captured the mood of a large (and growing to this day) portion of the country.
You really should check out Prophets of Rage. It's the instrumentalists from Rage Against the Machine with Chuck D (Public Enemy) and B-Real (Cypress Hill) on vocals. One of their first releases was a cover of this song. Also, check out Audioslave. That's the Rage instrumentalists with Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) on vocals.

Remember when this came out i was young my hair was all the way down my back hearing this for the first time and starting a pit in my room all by myself. Great times truly, though the flipside was I lived through the riots that inspired this song in the first place and even sadder yet ever so poignant is this same song having so much relevance here and now. Full circle from a teenage kid in California in the 90's to more of the same a few decades later... (moshing by myself included)
