  • Therapist analyzes the lyrics of "Aerials" by System of a Down to discuss the importance of shifting your perspective and releasing control. Most people think the path to a better life involves controlling every possible aspect of their life, but the truth is there is so much we will never be able to control, and the best path to a free life is by shifting your perspective to a larger 20,000 feet view. This song is a call to release control and trust that at 20,000 feet everything will make sense.

Needs to be a trend. Please. 4 minutes of exposition and yammering and "previews of coming soon" at the beginning that nobody cares about... this was refreshing.

I think one of the band members said that the kid was inspired how he felt in life sometimes. As an "alien" or an outcast. Althought surrounded by many people, they still feel alienated, which is why the character looks the way it does

I've always interpreted the song's lyrics as inviting the listener to be critical of their own mindset, but when combined with the powerful music, it feels very empowering and uplifting.

See, to me the video and song has the same meaning. It's fame chasing and envy. Everyone abandons everything they gain for the next big thing and then the next. The boy in the video is an alien in settings totally unlike what he should be surrounded by. It represents our desire for fame and fortune and no matter how we try and change ourselves to fit in, we still won't be accepted, but we'll be exploited, represented the photographer at the end. "We're one in the river and one again after the fall." Means to me we're all the same until we let society separate us, but once we fall, we're all back to square one. "Always wanna go but never wanna stay." That me is like another song lyric, "Undending paper chase". We always wanna find the next big hustle or thing and never wanna be happy or settle. We need to find the next vain thing to move to that won't bring us real happiness. "Always wanna play but never wanna lose." Meaning we always wanna take shots and do our best to find the easy way to fame or fortune or love, but never wanna have the repercussions if we fail.
Ultimately, it ends with the point we should just accept ourselves and learn we're more than what we are and special regardless and be the best us we can be and find true happiness and don't take it for granted. Not to let society dictate what we SHOULD be.

Just found you and am loving your reactions. It doesn’t appear as you’ve been turned onto Ren yet. As someone can really dive into mental health and other deep content I think you would find a deep rabbit hole with Ren’s music. The place to start is the song Hi Ren. (Also the way you feel music would make for incredible content with REN’s music)

    • @stijnp8675
      @stijnp8675 3 місяці тому

@@b1jou123 good question that goes straight to the heart of the problem. ‘I’ didn’t do anything. That’s kinda what enlightenment is, switching from the doer to the witness. What can ‘I’ do to make that doer disappear? well nothing, because all action comes from that same ‘I’. Enlightenment is losing yourself. How can you lose yourself? You can’t because it’s the end of all self-control. It’s all a complete contradiction. Therefore never trust anyone who says ‘I am enlightened’ because you can’t. Enlightenment is the absence of that same I. It’s not an achievement, it’s more the opposite of an achievement. It’s what you fall into when all achievement comes to an end. Hope this helps.

One of my favorite SOAD songs. I agree with your assessment of the song. From and anarchist perspective, both individualist anarchism and social anarchism both express concern for the individual but social anarchism cautions against "rugged individualism" and that each individual is still part of a whole yet not subordinate to it. We as individuals must not loose sight of everything going on around us.

I know it ain't a popular band (it is for me cause it's my favorite band) but for me the best lyrics in a metal song are from Insomnium, song called "Pale morning star" - maybe you wanna check the lyrics video sometimes, you will for sure not regret it. so im going to bare my soul a little bit...system of a down has been one of my favorite bands since i was a teenager and im 36 now. Their music connected to me in a way that allowed me to express myself and allow me to feel comfortable in my own skin not just their lyrics but the overall progression of each song and how it added to the album. when i was younger my stepdad molested me and my sisters and ive always struggled with anger issues and respecting people in authority that i felt didnt deserve it. once i found this band linkin park limp bizkit etc when i was younger turned me to music so i started playing the drums. it became how i released my anger my aingst my frustrations with the world its such controlled chaos its beautiful. i still cling to music til this day when i feel a certain way or i cant catch my breath and im about to lose my mind i listen to metal its so calming in a strange way but its the control in the chaos that just allows my heart to slow back to normal like all is right and wheres its supposed to be...im not sure if i should be saying any of this but id rather someone read this and know that theyre not alone if they struggle the way i do

From Micro: @andrewdixon4252 You are absolutely welcome to share all of this here, friend. Regardless of how much or how little you feel comfortable sharing, this space and channel are designed exactly for this. So rest assured that there is no shame, no judgment, no guilt for the fact that you've posted about your story and about things that are meaningful for you.
It's actually an honor and privilege to get to know you like this! And it's even more inspiring that you share this with the hope that it could encourage others. It definitely helps to know that there are other people who may have been through the same, and to realize that the pain we experience does not define us, even less our worth.
At a personal level, there are things in your comment that I relate with. I was sexually abused at different times of my life, by different people, and while finally starting to processing the impact it had on me during the last couple of years - or coming out of this kind of state of forgetfulness and numbness - music has been such a powerful outlet as well. You've mentioned LP - their music saved me from very dark times and definitely made me feel heard/understood, as well as if my anger was finally justified. Hearing someone screming out their own pain and verbalizing things we wish we could shout to the person who have hurt us... that's so cathartic. And it's healthy after all. Good release of emotions, and no harm to us or someone else. It creates a beautiful, intense but supportive chaos somehow.
I can only imagine the journey you've been through having experienced the trauma of molestation and the impact it has on the trust you can then have (or not) for others. It shakes your world in ways that seem too deep and too complex to convey into words. The loneliness that being victim of sexual abuse creates still shakes me at my core - and I'm sorry you've experienced that yourself. No one should ever have hurt you. No one should have even though about it. So I hope you can keep exploring this anger - and any other emotion that may arise - in ways that keep *serving* you moving forward. For you deserve to live life in which you would feel a new, well-deserved type of peace within.
You have been through hell and back, and even though you didn't mention it explicitely, I wish to acknowledge how much your efforts, to make it through the darkest and challenging times of trauma recovery, are seen right now. It takes a lot of courage to push through, to name what happened, and even more to speak about it openly as you did here. Shame, guilt, self-blame don't not belong here. What I see through your post is a brave, resilient human being who has a majestic force within - especially through embracing their own vulnerability.
May the sound of drums and music keep fulfilling your heart, as well as helping your body and mind feeling grounded to the present. You are without a doubt forging a meaningful path for yourself. If you ever need to talk or just a shoulder to lie on at times, the Heartsupport community will be present. You too, you are not alone my friend. Hold fast.

I have a personal experience that, I think, can simplify the concept: My 1st job was in a very collaborative environment, in a very populated city. There I learned when the place and the people around you grow, evolve, you will to. Now, living in a very small city, where this concept should be easier to notice, people act in a way to get advantages from the government without having need and/or attending the conditions required, spending the resources that could help someone else in real "need". Or, doing harm (not in a violent way or something like that) to another, just because some disagreement or antipathy... So, the consequence, is that everyone (in average) is always getting worse, the things, instead evolve, walk backwards.

Great and insightful comments. I was wondering how the strange looking boy fits in. Perhaps he is an alien ET and because he is not like us he can see us more clearly. We are surrounded by people like ourselves who have the same control issues and walls and can't see that we are trapped as well. The alien ET boy, however can see us. We see him as a freak celebrity and drive him around in parades and walk him on the red carpet surrounded by supermodels. He sees us as trapped, which is why I think he goes to sleep at the end being so tired viewing all of the senseless struggle that we all put ourselves through.

I've always taken this song to be a much more spiritual song. The opening verse, "Life is a waterfall/We're one in the river/And one again after the falls", I've always taken to mean that before we're born we're part of a broader spiritual collective consciousness and when we die, we rejoin that collective spiritual consciousness, but like in a waterfall where water breaks up into individual drops, we all become individual and separate from one another. It's when we look around and realize that we're all the same, coming from the same source and are part of a greater whole. The song is almost buddhist.

Bands recommended: The Warning and Jinjer. The Warning are three sisters from Mexico playing rock/hard rock and sometimes more metal-ish. Their lyrics are often clever and interesting with a lot of psychological storytelling and at other times their lyrics comment a lot on modern society. Jinjer is a metalcore-ish band from Ukraine and there is a lot of psychological food for thought as well as occasional social commentary in their lyrics as well.

Great Vids-just subscribed. If you want to get into some Metal that'll help give perspective on various aspects of life, try Dio and Black Sabbath. I'm 56 and his/their music has helped get me through some dark days and and still does.

As I understand it, this song is about the loneliness of Fame, and it’s comparison to the human ego. This is why the kid is an alien, because fame alienates the celebrity and people who seek fame and don’t get it also feel like aliens among society, as if they don’t belong. When you focus on yourself instead of everyone as a moving life, you’re doomed to your own self-made misery. I had a rehearsal space under SOAD in Burbank by the Bob Hope Airport, that’s where I heard this from.

You're interpretation describes the general gist for the reasons why an alien instead of a human was used. An alien discovers earth and, from way up high, views humans as holding strong values in support of cooperation and unity based on what can be perceived from far away. After landing and viewing humans up close sadly feels they were mistaken as humans display values which favors individual superiority/prestige and personal wealth, and as the video shows, the alien attempts to understand why by experiencing life with those perceived values (and doesn't seem to experience any actual joy from it). It's not just a message to let go of the belief of control over peer perspective/acceptance, but also to encourage the viewer to always assess their values and goals with themselves openly and honestly to ensure they are what truly matters to you and not just something that was observed in others and decided upon for that reason alone. Regardless, great take on your interpretation of the songs message, solid breakdown and explanation. Keep it up! :)

would you be willing to listen to sugar by system of a down?
in my memory it's a very cryptic song - very good, very unique - but also very cryptic.
also I don't know if you want to broach such a subject, but System also has a song
called "violent prnography" about media, especially television if I understand them correctly.

Aerieals = a structure made of metal rods or wires that receives or sends out radio or television signals... so the song talks about antennas.

the analytical interpretation of art through the mind of a psychologist, this should be entertaining. Jim Morrison once said, although I live in the subconscious, our pale reason hides the infinite from us.

I've generally not been big into lyrics, feelings them as just another instrument, but some bands have lyrical themes that can't be ignored. I usually go with the feel of the music. I love in this song how the first chorus drops in volume from the verse before it, beings rather subdued. The next time the chorus hits, it stays loud, keeping the the intensity of the verses. The song is building to that point, stress and intensity increasing, the chorus is the release, and the outro is the calm after.

if you are planning to react to some new bands i would suggest Avenged Sevenfold, american metal band, they started in early 2000's
as a therapist i want to see you reaction on their few songs:
    save me
    brompton cocktail
    the wicked end
    the stage
    cosmic
    danger line
    fiction
nobody (official music video) video is needed for context
    simulation
    unbound (the wild ride)
    critical acclaim (live LBC version)
they have some amazing songs that may sound better than the ones on this list but this songs i suggested have interesting lyrics so it would be nice to hear your interpretation of what the song is about

Or.. "When you free your eyes eternal price", Aerials is also meaning antennas, why has the boy alien like ressemblance in the video ? Are we connected in cosmos? oooh so many questions. But the song is in my opinion one of SOADs best. Also you need to check Serj Tankian - Harakiri !
