When I listen to SOAD
My neighbors do too
MWAHAHA!! I LOVE IT!
❤
'Father, into your hands I commend my spirit'. Yeah, think of the last words of Jesus Christ on the cross.
Allegedly
@@Fitzhugh666🙄
😕
"Put another nail in, i'm slipping!"?
It was also used in Jesus Christ Superstar.
The song is about suicide, and how people will condemn, or mock people who are suicidal as if they are weak, and pathetic. The first verse is basically speaking about an unstable person with an unstable life. Well adjusted people from the outside looking in tend to believe that mentally/emotionally unstable people are exaggerating their issues for the sake of gaining sympathy, or attention, and believe they are a mess because of their own choice. Some people will go as far as to say that a suicidal person deserves to die without even considering the emotional impact of what they are saying about that person in such a vulnerable mental state, especially young people who are very insecure, impressionable, and haven't found themselves yet. This song holds even more validity in the age of the internet, and social media.
"During an interview, guitarist Daron Malakian explained the meaning of the song: "The song is about how we are regarded differently depending on how we pass. Everyone deserves to die. Like, if I were now to die from drug abuse, they might say I deserved it because I abused dangerous drugs. Hence the line, 'I cry when angels deserve to die.'""
This comment just gave me empathy for my bully in HS….she gave a 5 min speech of why SOAD was her favorite band and I think I understand why. Thank you for sharing your insight
Of course Serj is doing the main singing but it's the guitarist Darren who is harmonizing. But they sync it absolutely perfectly note for note.
I love System, but it's not really that hard to "synchronize note-for-note perfectly" when you're using Pro Tools and other digital wizardry in the studio. I've seen this song performed live, and while pretty darned good it was far from perfect, note-for-note synchronization.
Serj and Daron harmonize so well together
Serg is a trained Opera Singer; He has a Awesome voice 😁😜😉😃🥰
Great reaction, I think everyone who listens to this song remarks about how they've never heard anything like it before.
Keep it going with SOAD, they really are a groundbreaking group in so many ways!
I would suggest "Question!", "Sugar", "Hypnotize", "BYOB", "Holy Mountains", "Suggestions", and "IEAIAIO", not necessary in that order, for starters! 😊
There are so many layers in the last 40-50 second of the song, with, it's by far one of my favorite parts of any song when the piano and strings kick in. I know quite a few people who didn't even realize the piano and strings were there.
The piano draws my attention every time, it becomes the focus of the music for me.
The contrasting parts are so incredible.Love this song
Yes they are amazing 😂
Now that you have a taste of SOAD, you must enter the rabbit hole! BYOB, Prison Song, ATWA, Aerials, etc...they don't have a bad song!
I haven't done a deep dive into it yet but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of SOAD's melodic and harmonious influence is from Armenian folk music. That is their heritage and a lot of their music is about the Armenian genocide.
If you get a chance, check out the isolated vocals/instrumentals of this song. There is way more going on than meets the ear, I only discovered this recently myself when a reactor actually had the isolated up. This band is not your typical garage junkies making noise. They are artists. This is one among many possible and likely reasons their music holds up to this day.
So for the midsection “Father into your hands I commend my spirit” has a pretty crazy backstory: the singer Serj Tankian was having trouble coming up with ideas so he picked a book from the producer’s collection which happened to be the Bible.
The line was randomly chosen by the singer and it happened to be Jesus’ last words on the cross.
Regarding that “C” section, you may be thinking of Jesus Christ Superstar. Both in the musical and biblically, Jesus’ last words on the cross were “eloi, eloi lama sabachthani?” (father, father, why have you forsaken me?) and “father, into your hands I commend my spirit”.
Yes, Jesus Christ Superstar is the first thing that pops into my head as well
New subscriber, loved your reaction and love System of a down, very unique band and unlike any. Looking forward to more SOAD 👍 not many people actually pay attention to details. You will like *Aerials*
Awesome! Thank you!
Who else is obsessed with the guitar riffs in this song?
and just now Nick Thurl Mavromatis dropped a banger 🔥 You gotta react to it!
There isn't an acoustic and an electric guitar. It's all electric. It's just that some of it is distorted while other parts are clean.
Rick Ruben had Serj pull lyrics from a random book from ricks shelf. Have to get Serj or Rick to see if they remember 🤔
Great reaction! I love SOAD.
LUKE 23:46
And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, into Thy hands I commend My spirit.” And having said thus, He gave up the ghost.
The song definitely has the feel of Jesus Christ Superstar.
Ironic story about that part you said you've heard before and is an earworm....Serj, the singer, didn't have lyrics for that part of the song. So Rick Rubin told him to just grab a book from the bookshelf and open to a random page and point his finger, and that's what he got.
Can confirm. I just saw the interview where he spoke about this a couple weeks ago
I love your reactions! And I'll love to see a react to Aerials from SOAD 🙏🏻
This isnt even their best song Shawka :) They are one of the few rock bands I love, Their Armenian (sp?) comes through in the vocals and adds a bit to it, in my opinion. If you need more System rec's ask Johnny, he's a HUGE SOAD fan :)
Please next SOAD - Aerials :)
This is the most energetic and most depressing song at the same time. SOAD just literally made a cult classic/incredible song! I will never forget this one!
1:04 that sound isnt coming from playing behind the nut/on the headstock. Thats just video shenanigans. To get that high pitch sound hes playing close to the bridge. If he was playing where you think he is, it wouodnt be producing those notes at all.
THe original title of the song is Chopped Suicide but the label nixed it and they cut it in half.
This was everywhere in the early 2000's.
The name of the song was just "Suicide".
It was just "Suicide" and the label was not liking it that much. So they decided to chop it thus Chop Sui-cide and Chop Suey to make a play with the dish, which the band thought it was a way better name anyway.
@@deanmolko5892wasn’t “Massive Suicide” because the original record on the song and from the firsts albums released there is an whisper voice at the beginning: we are committing a massive suicide. Another fact I remember: song name was switched because it was scheduled for 9/11… and record company didn’t want any troubles with that
I think we got another fan fellers
First time listener to your reaction videos, you have an interesting viewpoint and I look forward to checking out your other videos. If you haven't heard it, I'd like to see your reaction to Devin Townsend's "Why", the best version would be the live broadcast he did to raise money for the Vancouver Hospital Foundation (there's a QUARANTINE sign in the background of the video).
We've had quite a few Devin Townsend requests and he is on the list for the near future!
Fun fact: song was written by the guitarist; lyrics and all…except the bridge. The singer literally grabbed a book, pointed to a line, and those words made the bridge vocals. Will post the source under this comment.

I HIGHLY recommend Question! by them.
If you are enjoying System of a Down, B.Y.O.B. for me is an absolute masterpiece
Jesus christ super Star
excellent
He’s not actually playing at the top of his fretboard like in the video. That confused me when I was a new guitarist.
BYOB!
So, out of curiosity I looked, and supposedly they're in Sing 2, if that helps.
It's a quote from the Bible Jesus said it father why have you forsaken me
JCS? :)
Love SOAD❤
Bible reference
Tthey other day I came across a new song called Damaged by October ends , they is gonna blow up soon. React to it ASAP 🔥
Passion of the Christ
✌️
The devil was an angel at first
I’m religious at all but looking at the Bible and his words really correlate
A biblical verse
SOAD IS THE GOAT
Do Lucy Thomas version of Haleluya If you didnt do it
Father into your hands, I commend my spirit is in the bible... and in Jesus Christ Superstar, a musical that first started around 1968-69 originally by Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice.
"Jesus called out with a loud voice,'Father into your hands I commit my spirit' When he said this,he breath his last" (Luke 23:46) He was quoting from scripture " Into your hand I commit my spirit"( Psalms 31:5). And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying " My God,My God, why have you forsaken me ?" ( Matthew 27:46).
The only part of being raised in a mega church that’s been helpful in my life is the ability to recall scripture and identify religious themes in art, culture, etc…otherwise it’s traumaaaa 😂😂😂
