Chop Suey is basically a masterpiece. One of the songwriters said that the song is about how we are all judged differently depending on the circumstances of our deaths. But like Serj has said before (lead singer of the band), music is all about interpretation. So you can explain it any way you want to that makes sense to you.
The Ark-Ham Sandwich - “masterpiece” is a stretch. An incredible song though for sure. If you’re looking for a “masterpiece” of rock, or even progressive metal, then I’d refer you to “La Villa Strangiato” by Rush. Don’t get me wrong, I do love SOAD. Their style is by far the most unique in that genre. But I personally, wouldn’t consider their works to be masterpiece caliber.
I get that the meaning of the song is really deep and well thought out, but the organization/melody of the song just does not appeal to me, So I wouldn’t call this a “‘masterpiece”
You bring a good point. They were always saying their songs are always up for interpretation by those who listen to it. Some interpret the song as anti-modern day church, some say its about suicide, some say its about their style of music(Chop-Suey has a little of everything thrown in the recipe which is a lot like their music which has a little of everything in it as you noticed while listening LayedBak). This song is a masterpiece of the early 2000s
Fun fact: The song was originally titled "Suicide" but Columbia Records forced the band to change it to avoid controversy. The song title is therefore a wordplay: "Suey" is "suicide", "chopped" in half.
To this day I cannot tell you a better musical moment than Serj singing “Father into your hands I commit my spirit, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?” Chills every time.

He just so happened to be sitting in Rick Rubin's library when Rick told him to go to his bookshelf and take a random book, "Open it to any page and tell me the first phrase you see", he did and that's what ended up being the high point of the song.

The song talks about how people are often judged more by the circumstances of their deaths rather than what led to it. In example, if you died from a drug overdose, no matter how good and pure you were in life, in death people are more likely to remember you as someone who got their comeuppance for their misdeeds (i cry when angels "deserve to die"), whereas someone else could live a whole life of debauchery, thievery and abuse, but because they ended it in suicide - most of the time to avoid facing the consequences of what they've done - people tend to, regardless of their status while alive, treat them in death as good people, tortured souls who ultimately were "too good for this world" (trust in my self-righteous suicide)

I loved this song as a teen and still do and it literally gave me chills for some reason to watch someone else be so affected by it for the first time.
That’s exactly where he got it form. From what I’ve heard he was having writers block so his producer had his open a book to a random page and pointed to a random line and it was that verse.
The lyrics are astounding & I've always gave great though to them. This song was released Aug 1, 2001. One month before the 911 attacks. When he talks about why has God forsaken him & speaks about trust in his self righteous suicide, it gives me chills. That's an awful lot of coincidence if you ask me. Great song & reaction.
You should hear how he got the idea for the father forgive me part. He couldn't find the right lyrics and a producer I think said grab a random book off the shelf and open to a random page and that's what he pointed to. Pretty incredible
My heart is warm and fuzzy to see your enjoying something amazing. And the other comments are spot on as to the background of the title and the meaning of the song🥰
Just found your channel today and I am loving it bro. Seeing you get into these songs for the first time that I listened to growing up is cool. This particular one has great harmonies and was performed with so much emotion. It is one of my favorites from this band.
The why have you forsaken me lines are from a Bible verse. Serj Tankian (singer), went to the producer’s house, grabbed “a book,” opened it to a random page and placed his finger somewhere on the page, and where he put it was exactly on the verse that he used for that part of the song, which fit in perfectly. That book turned out to be the Bible. 🙏🏻❤️🎶👍🏻👍🏻
Glad you love our side of the fence :D I grew up into rock and metal as my dad was a fan of old rock bands like Queen and Deep Purple, and had kind of a revelation with Linkin Park that led me to also enjoy hip hop from my teen years, and just made me curious for more styles. Love how your appreciate all music bud keep being real.
Definitely
I genuinely think serj has an absolutely amazing voice no cap. I genuinely could imagine him in the streets of Jerusalem 2000 years ago singing or preaching. Weird I know but it's the truth
They are Armenian and that's a story I can't fit here but super tragic. The song is just mostly references to their Christian heritage
And the chorus wake up is actually supposedly about domestic abuse
XavierMacX only daron is from California, Serj and John we’re born in Lebanon and Shavo was born in Armenia.
@@Gregx763 Good to know! I guess the site was not correct. Looking at wikipedia, you are definitely. Thank you.
Stealing Society yeah but they also all moved to Cali because LA has a huge Armenian population. They met in school
@@Gregx763 During WW I Serj's grandparents escaped the Armenian genocide that was implemented by the _former_ Ottoman Empire and became refuges in Lebanon.
Man there's a cheeky little band called slipknot with a tune called duality with your name all over it waiting for a reaction buds
YES!!!
Yes!
Hell yeah!
Yes!
Their best song ever hands down
I love how he reacts like anything like it's a fire beat.
Wuggerups the drums in this song is filthy tho
This had me raving 2am in the morning seeing someone feel the Suey for the first time
"Jinjer - Pisces" is almost like a must react for every reaction channel that reacts to Rock/Metal it is one of the most reaction worthy songs out there, well at least in my opinion.
It def is. And it’s a great song, GREAT BAND
You ain't a reactor without losing your Pisces virginity :P
"if it's good music, it's good music baby". Preach! My colleagues says I'm weird cos I have random songs in my phone. RnB, pop, metal, rock, ballads, heck I even have traditional songs lol. As long as it's quality, I'll hear it any time
Here's a great one, P.O.D. - "Youth of the nation". Deep message, great song by a really good band.
I've been requesting for past two- three months 😁😁😁
Aw man throw back!!! That was my middle school JAM
My first rock song!
Agreed and the message is just as relevant today as it was back when it came out.
Yo they got a special place in my heart sice I was a youngin!!! I'm 23 and they kick ass I'd love to see them live if their still aroud!!!
Every time I hear and sing the forsaken part I start to tear up as this song came out during a sad period of my life and music was my escape and this is a song that would help me get through those days. I saw these guys live at a festival in 2015 and when they sang the forsaken part you can feel the emotion in the crowds voice
SOAD is a very anti establishment type group and their lyrics are really worth dysecting, very interesting group.
I've been jamming them for YEARS and I still don't understand it all 😅
I love you!
The beauty of music is that, arguably, you don't have to understand it. If it moves you, that's enough.
I'm constantly hearing their songs in a different way, like cigaro, never really paid alot of attention to that one, but in the age of Donald Trump, that song hits the nail on the head.
A lot of things also lead back to the Armenian Genocide that Serj continues to try and bring light to.
Jonathan Williams
They’re trying to warn us about the cults in Hollywood and the media. They’re all up in the cult too but they can only give us subliminal messages.
System of a Down is an Armenian-American heavy metal band. Their names are very beautiful
Respect for opening your ears to different music. Here take my sub 👍
SOAD is a comfort band. The meaning behind alot of their songs is just beautiful. This one has always been my favorite, and Lonely Day
When you listened to the cd so much as a teen that you know what song comes next. Jump pogo

Ugh. System of a Down is so good. Always been one of my favorite bands ever. Brings me back to High School. 😭
As a person who frequently loves this kind of music, it's so fun to watch others who've never listen to it react !
Love this dudes reactions and respect towards the different types of music he listens to 👌🙏🤙
Crowd surfing at a festival is one of the funnest things you'll ever do my man - put it on your list! Great videos and reactions always - thanks!!
Legit got goosebumps hearing Chop Suey on one of the hottest days this year bc of the vicariousness of seeing you experience it for the first time. So good!
“What just happened?” System of a Down just happened
There's a reason why Chop Suey! is the top metal song of the DECADE.
Just so u know-This song was named on the music chart #1 Hard rock song of the 20th century and for that it’s Iconic
Next time maybe you can react to: System Of A Down - Toxicity
or: Linkin Park - In The End :)
Linkin park-given up is better
Hun7erkiller I like numb
Hun7erkiller Faint is even better
Theres better linkin park songs lmao dont be basic
Or slipknot. Papa roach. Gorillaz. Green day. Nirvana. MCR. Metallica.
The worst part of listening to SOAD, is finding out there is no other band like em. You are confined to the albums they made... Thats it
Also, references to the lyrics:
“And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”Matthew 27:46
"And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” Having said this, He breathed His last. Luke 23:46
Same with mewithoutyou. This is their last year as an active band too :(.
That's true art
I mean Elect the Dead by Serj is pretty close because its just the SOAD album that never was
Yeah... bands have tried to emulate them but there's just no way to recreate that
@Joe L'Horri slip arent anything like soad completely different both amazing but still.
Isn’t it funny that I know literally every song you react to? You need to spend time with us, my friend. Come to the rock side, we have cookies and pillows to scream into
I'll have the milk cartoon ready bruh

Just stumbled on this reaction. This song still gives me chills after hundreds of listens. And you got that face down pat. It’s a moral imperative that you make that exact face when listening to System. Glad you liked it 👍👍
I loved this song as a teen and still do and it literally gave me chills for some reason to watch someone else be so affected by it for the first time.
Try "freak on a leash" by "korn" if you can.. Good song
Edit: also another good one is "Falling away from me" same band
A Good Suggestion My Friend
Slar_Duham agreed I’m a huge fan of korn love their songs but he has react to daddy as well to know the meaning of their first album
@@Seraphinite_T.O he does, i feel so bad for JD

Seth Marta hey there’s a lot by them like testify, sleep now in the fire, bombtrack
bulls on parade
Glad to see more brothers joining the metal/hardcore scene and vibe! I’ve been an ink spot in a milk bowl out here for decades!!!
Respect for being open minded to such different styles of music to your own.
"Father into Your hands I commit My spirit" were Christ's last words. The rest of it is borrowed from Psalm 22, from what I can tell.
*commend my spirit
Wow
Christ said “Father why have you forsaken me” on the cross as well. For those who don’t know. He was mostly praying psalm 22.
That’s exactly where he got it form. From what I’ve heard he was having writers block so his producer had his open a book to a random page and pointed to a random line and it was that verse.
"what just happened, they completely switched" yip, that´s System of a Down...legenedary 😂😂
Love your facial expressions as you experience the music. I'm with you - I have a very broad taste of music.
Killswitch engage- the end of heartache
I'd cry if this dude reacted to killswitch lol
The lyrics are astounding & I've always gave great though to them. This song was released Aug 1, 2001. One month before the 911 attacks. When he talks about why has God forsaken him & speaks about trust in his self righteous suicide, it gives me chills. That's an awful lot of coincidence if you ask me. Great song & reaction.
You should hear how he got the idea for the father forgive me part. He couldn't find the right lyrics and a producer I think said grab a random book off the shelf and open to a random page and that's what he pointed to. Pretty incredible
One thing I wish people would mention more is the disharmony they do so perfectly with their two voices. One of my favorite things about them
My heart is warm and fuzzy to see your enjoying something amazing. And the other comments are spot on as to the background of the title and the meaning of the song🥰
We need more rock reactions you should do 2-3 a week because they are so good. Your missing out on a ton of awesome content for sure

The acoustic version of The Diary of Jane is amazing! The acoustic Give Me A Sign is really good too.
Just found your channel today and I am loving it bro. Seeing you get into these songs for the first time that I listened to growing up is cool. This particular one has great harmonies and was performed with so much emotion. It is one of my favorites from this band.
Crowd surfing is such a epic feeling!!! You connect with the band, crowd, music, and yourself all at once. At least feels that way to me
Tech N9ne - Straight Out The Gate featuring Serj (the singer of System of A Down)
One of my favorites
Amazing song
A Witty Alpaca the song that got me into soad, been into metal since then.
"You don't know about LayedBak?"
New sub who dis
The why have you forsaken me lines are from a Bible verse. Serj Tankian (singer), went to the producer’s house, grabbed “a book,” opened it to a random page and placed his finger somewhere on the page, and where he put it was exactly on the verse that he used for that part of the song, which fit in perfectly.
That book turned out to be the Bible. 🙏🏻❤️🎶👍🏻👍🏻
This song is soooo powerful. I love seeing everyone's reaction to this song. Loved your video LayedBack. You got yourself another subscriber.
That cut at 5:40 hurt so much... right on the best part of the song... those harmonies tho!

Ian Harmon , eh. It’s overplayed. It’s a great song, but, just tired of hearing it.
You left out 46&2
“Father, into your hands... I commend my spirits... “ and “Why have you forsaken me” is what Jesus said to God in his final moments.
Glad you love our side of the fence :D
I grew up into rock and metal as my dad was a fan of old rock bands like Queen and Deep Purple, and had kind of a revelation with Linkin Park that led me to also enjoy hip hop from my teen years, and just made me curious for more styles. I love when people step out of their comfort zone and - by chance - discover something they really enjoy!
Tool - “The Pot”
You will fall into a rabbit hole if you start listening to Tool
I enjoy watching all the reactors become more and more knowledgeable and self aware everytime they hear a new Tool song!
Tool sucks. Not even a good band.
Heck yeah I would love to watch a tool reaction video ... laterallus , vicarious , sober or even the last one fear inocolum .
