      Hey, kudos for holding that in for so long. As someone who played the game that part broke me in half the second we got to the motel. I was hoping for a split second that maybe it would be different, but the "stay awake with me" part just destroyed me. The best thing we can do for people who haven't experienced a story is not to spoil it for them, and you did a damn admirable job.

      Bella's reaction is SO masterful. The little yelp she does is hauntingly real - instead of just doing like a scream or some over the top yell or something, it's literally just a sound involuntarily escaping - like her voice cords didn't have time to tense up before she started making noise. It's EXACTLY how those real sounds of shock and surprise happen.

      He was fantastic. You could see how burdened he was the whole time, but every time he talked to Sam, you could his eyes light up a little.

      I loved the fact that just before he asked her "Do you trust me?" when he went to the house and then he proved that trust and head shotted a bunch.
      Then when he saw the baby clicker get into the car he had a Sarah PTSD moment and kinda panicked because he couldn't save either of them.

  • @Saphthings
    @Saphthings Рік тому +486

    There's something unsettling in realizing that Sam was just sitting there because he's deaf. An infected listens for their prey. Even if he ever went to go full on clicker he couldn't. Ellie broke her promise and fell asleep, so he was just sitting there. Waiting, screaming from the inside. As his brain was slowly eaten away. And until someone touched him, or came in his view, he would sit there forever.
    And when Ellie touched him, Sam saw his own body attack her. Instead of becoming the superhero he always wanted to be. He became a monster, crying for his brother to help. He didn't even hear the shot. Just his vision slowly fading to black. He spent all night trying not to fall asleep. Then suddenly his eyes were slowly closing, afraid of what would happen once he woke up, but he never did.
    Bill and Frank's story was sad, in a stoic kind of way, but just like Bill said at the end, it wasn't tragic. They'd lived a full life. Here Sam and Henry had hope, a chance, and a whole life ahead of them. Henry was so good that he protected Ellie before even realizing what he was doing. It was instinctual. That comes from deep inside. Henry finally became the superhero Sam knew he could be, he just didn't know he'd be the monster. So Henry's first time killing. Was his own little brother.
    A little like Kathleen said, this kind of goodness, makes it hard to live in such a tragic world.

    The Sam & Ellie scene in the room after the horde scene just shows us how young she is. She'd been told she's unique, that she's the answer, the "cure". So she tries to use her magic blood to heal Sam. What she should have done was tell Joel and Henry, so the brothers could have said their goodbyes. The game mostly had runners for the sake of mechanics and scaling, but when you think about it, after 20 years most infected would be clickers. Runners would be rare and only show up near human populations that come in contact with infected, like Boston. Where the infected are isolated for more than a year, all of them should be clickers or bloaters.

    I love how the series is elaborating and expanding on the core themes of the game, including TLOU2's biggest theme: GUILT;
    - Ellie OBVIOUSLY feels it, represented beautifully at the end with her "I'm sorry" message
    - Henry talks of "doing a bad guy thing", feels horrible about Kathleen's brother, then can't even handle what happens with Sam ("what have I done")... 😭
    - EVEN Kathleen feels some level of guilt, speaking of how her brother would be "horrified by what she's done". Of course, she's an excellent example of how UNCONTROLLED guilt and grief can be mis-handled.

      After her speech to Perry in her childhood bedroom, I kind of think Michael's death made her snap, psychotic break. She is the Sam to Michael's Henry. He took care of her at all costs. He was the one who went to prison and died rather than give up his sister and fellow resistance members. She simply couldn't forgive Henry for giving him up to save someone else, even if it was, in spirit, the same as Michael saving her.

      Yeah. The people ignored their leader's call for compassion and forgiveness, and it led to their deaths, as the infected come from the ground and swarmed towards the QZ. A cautionary tale of "an eye for an eye and eventually the World goes blind."
      When Perry says "he didn't change things, you did" he forgot they mustered the strength and courage to revolt because of the man they followed, and what he meant to them, ans what they did to him. Kathleen was mistakenly seen as a spiritual successor to him, but she denounced everything he tried to teach them. And after the brief exhilaration of liberation, the wrath and vengeance only guaranteed their doom.
      Poetic Justice, though Kathleen's brother would have been heartbroken, probably. He must've known if they took this path, something like this is what would end up happening. Complete obliteration.

      Historical sidenote: I believe Germany has extensive files from East Germany's Stasi (Secret Police) detailing records of who snitched on whom, and why.
      They keep them classified, at least for the time being I think, because so many people back then (who are still alive) were made to turn on eachother, threatened with consequences for themselves or their loved ones. Perhaps someone went to prison for years accused of illegal political activity, and they never knew it was a close relative, a sibling, a cousin, a friend who ratted them out, themselves being threatened by the Stasi with torture or prison, for them or other relatives, a son or daughter perhaps.
      If those records went public thousands of people might die in a matter of days or weeks I imagine, as victims find out why they or their loved ones were targeted, who sold them out, and attack them, or some collaborators 3nd their l!v3s as it becomes public (and especially known to family and friends) that they collaborated with the regime, and the specific consequences others suffered for it. That's what Secret Police Bureaus do, they turn *everyone* into snitches. They set off a Salem Witch Trial situation, with fingers pointing at eachother in all directions, then lay back and watch people feed eachother to the wolves.
      There are millions of case files I think, hundreds of millions of pages of documents probably. If I'm recalling this correctly and those files are still inaccesible, I can't help but to agree with that position. *Some misteries are better left unsolved,* perhaps not in Science, but definitely when Totalitarian politics and Families and communities intersect. The smart ones don't want to know, if they knew they'd probably come to regret learning who sold them out. Ignorance is Bliss, as they say.

The leader was fighting Nazi/Soviet level evil, and thus killing him was putting tens of thousands of lives in danger). Her want for justice for that crime turned to vengeance which turned to obsession when corrupted her, then killed her. It's the trolley problem in philosophy.
    The symmetry of the episode is beautiful. Both Kathleen and Henry died at the end because of their love for their brother, and both because they went to the extreme form of their love, vengeful love and self-sacrificing love respectfully.
    Ellie's belief that she could cure Sam made it so much more painful. I think she genuinely believed that it would work. She is a child, she has been told over and over that she is a cure, she has no understanding about how a cure would be made so it makes sense that she thinks it could be relatively simple... Oh, so sad. She apologized at the grave.
    When Tess died, Ellie hung around to grieve, while Joel shoved his emotions down grimly and pressed on. This time it was Joel who lingered and Ellie who left. He is becoming more emotional, and she is becoming colder/more traumatized. I also think she left so fast because the faster they leave, the sooner there will be a cure. The sooner that will never happen again (in a child's mind). Also, Joel and Henry mocked "endure and survive." Henry survived but couldn't endure. Both parts are important.
    Sam also faced the window. Two things: He knew he wouldn't see Ellie, which means he wouldn't attack her. He was protecting her. As he felt himself turn, he knew he wouldn't hear her. If he couldn't see her, he wouldn't know she was there and thus couldn't attack her. Also, it has been confirmed over the years of the game that runners DO have the person in their head. So Sam was in there when he attacked Ellie. Something to think of though -> If Ellie never touched him, if no one ever touched him or got in his vision, he would be sitting there forever watching the sunset. He's deaf, so he wouldn't hear anything. Once he hit the clicker phase, and he could no longer see, then he would be sitting there in darkness and silence forever.
    Cordyceps is one of the fungi that is composed of chitin; crustaceans and a lot of arthropods also have a lot of chitin in their exoskeleton. As the infected get worse and worse (covered in more and more of the fungus), you can kind of think of it as having more and more armor/exoskeleton.

    Henry's last words "What did I do...." was pure horror and heartbreaking, you can hear his distraught and despair at same time, and honestly cuts deeper than the game version "it's all your fault!" The moment he realized that everything he has done, people he betrayed are all for nothing, Sam still died in the most horrific way, and what Kathleen said about the "you can't f**k with fate" was right all alone.

(I have never heard of the game before the show) but I knew what was going to happen next and I literally had to cover my eyes until it was over.. but the tears aren't done yet. So, Nerdy is not alone on this one.

    Ellie and Joel switch sides at the end. That was the Tess moment from episode 2. Ellie runs ahead while Joel is still waiting at the grave. Tess gave Joel a mission he wanted to fulfill as her last wish.
    The relationship that Joel had with Tess was similar to Ellie and Sam. Ellie promised Sam the cure here and couldn't keep this promise. She now wants to make sure that this never happens again. As Tess said at the time "save who you can save".
    Ellie really has a mission now. Indirectly get through her feelings of guilt. She wants her blood to work. Before that, she was someone who had no control over anything. Others have determined where she grows up and where she has to go now. Now that has changed. Now conviction plays a role and she takes control. She wants to save the world so that there are no more Sam's.
    In addition, Ellie and Joel have reached a new level of connection with each other. Wordless understanding. Both wanted to save the brothers during the attack. That wasn't Joel's "don't do it Ellie" look. That was the look "I'll give you fire protection Ellie". And Ellie has absolute confidence in Joel.

    @Nerdy Nightly,
    7:30 Lead in paint was the issue it was during your grandparents generation back in 1971. By 1977 the amount of lead in paint was down to 0.009%. Society took lead in paint very seriously back in the day =)
    12:11 DAMN! That was dark.
    23:48 This is worse than the game because Ellie knew that Sam had been bitten here--no one, but Sam knew in the game. We know the full infection timeline thanks to the FEDRA poster posted in the Boston QZ:
    -bites to the neck, head and face: 5 to 15 minutes
    -bites to the torso, shoulder, arm and hand: 2 to 8 hours
    -bites to the leg and foot: 12 to 24 hours.
    The Boston QZ showed us at least three amputees, so we know that amputation is a viable option, that said, Sam likely still would have died as there's no way they could go back to the city with Infected ransacking the place about now, and there's no telling how far away they are from the next safe place to treat Sam after amputation--Joel and Ellie both have knives, but you wouldn't want that cutting off any limbs, but those were options. At the very least, Henry could have had the chance to give Sam a proper goodbye and time to prepare for the end. There is no happy ending here, but there is an ending that isn't as sad as this one, had Sam or Ellie told Joel and Henry that Sam was bit ='(
    26:19 because this story is teaching the lesson of family, and what one will do for it? Joel didn't do everything he could to protect Sarah, but Tess did everything she could to protect Joel. Bill did everything he could to protect Frank and they lived a happy full lives. End when Frank could no longer ENDURE, they both chose to check out on their own time as there was no longer a need to SURVIVE. Kathleen and Henry have shown us what often happens when one goes to the extreme--things don't end well! What other lessons are left for Joel and Ellie to learn? Will they learn from these lessons?
    This is a rough story, but a very good one!
