In my opinion, Bill and Frank won the apocalypse... They were able to live 16 years together in a relatively normal way. They both experienced love and simplicity. They both went out together in a very romantic way. I cried the first time I watched this, and I've since watched like 10 reactors watch this episode and I cry every. damn. time. Nick Offerman deserves an Emmy for this performance. Seriously. Hes incredible!!!

I love the blocking in the sofa scene, Frank, the weak and sick man is higher up, better lit, and sitting prouder, wheras Bill the healthier man is lower and looking up, almost cowering, but it never feels like power over another it feels like love flowing down from someone who can give it to someone who needs it.

I couldn't stop crying at the strawberry scene and the scene where Frank told Bill about his plan. Both of these scenes were so pure that you could literally feel the love they had for each other and their bond, seeing a gruff guy like Bill crying his eyes out on the couch made me ugly cry so hard. I'm glad they went together because Bill wouldn't have survived in a world which didn't have Frank in it.

I think what i liked the most is the fact that they changed Bill story but kept the “toxicity” aspect in a way.
They didn’t have a perfect relationship but in this show they manage to make it work and truly loved each other. 👀 unlike the game that Frank straight up hangs himself and Bill is left alone. Good changes

Know what really got me (in hindsight) when Frank told Bill about his final good day? The marriage. The world collapsed in 2003, the year before same-sex marriage became a thing in the US. They never married because, in the old world, they wouldn't have been able to. Frank essentially "invented" gay marriage in their little world, their home, just so they could do it before he passed.

Bill and Frank's story really touched me. In the real world, same sex marriage wouldn't be legal in Massachusetts until 2004. Here, the world fell apart in 2003, before any of that could happen for these two. Seeing as they met in middle-ish age in the mid-2000s, they were around to witness the AIDS crisis just a couple decades earlier, and likely lost friends during that period. Survival for people like them was never guaranteed in the "normal world", so for them to survive another epidemic, find love, and build a home in the ruins of a devastated community is a perfect example of "winning" the apocalypse.

  • @Saphthings

Bill taught Frank how to survive, and Frank taught Bill how to live. In the game Frank ends up leaving to see the world because he's too extroverted, gets infected, and hangs himself before turning. So Bill is a lot more bitter about the one person he trusted leaving him.
Either way Bill serves to show Joel the difference between surviving, and living. Bill is a survival expert, but what does he know about living until he opens up? In the game he shows Joel how bad he can become if he doesn't trust people or open up, in the show he shows Joel how good it can become and what he could've had with Tess. So either way Joel starts to open up.
That's the major theme in the Last of Us. Surviving vs Living.

Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett are both Emmy nominated and Bartlett won one. Offerman like many actors started in theater and can really do the drama roles. The story change was pushed by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann who also wrote the story for the game was open to it and it really fits into the narrative he wanted to tell in the game that this is a story about love between humans at the end of the world. Mazin even says this is a story about love between people at the most dire time in existence and how that love could save or doom humanity. All wrapped in a zombie type story. In the end the monsters are not the real monster, we are. This story is going to be about how we go out. It will follow the game narrative but make changes where it is important to play to the drama and not the on screen action.

Also, i dont want a 1 to 1 retelling of the game, the show should bring something new. This was beautiful, amazing TV. Awards should be won for everyone here, actors, sound, writers, sets....it was all 100% amazing.

Aside from Bill and Frank's relationship, another favorite aspect of this episode is watching Joel slip back into "dad" mode without even realizing it or admitting it, whether it's trying to keep Ellie from seeing the mass grave or helping her with the seatbelt. Even his rules, while the first one is his emotionally wounded self trying to keep from being hurt, the latter two are meant to keep her safe. And then we get the end, a classic "Dad, you have such lame tastes in music", followed by, "Okay, I guess this is fine." And Joel even smiles.

OMG you guys had me in tears!!! Loved this reaction vid! This episode was a 10/10!

I didn’t cry like most people did only because l realized that Bill and Frank accomplished something so many people fail to: And that’s live their lives the way they dictated them.
Granted this still happens during an apocalypse, but despite that they made the most of it and lived a very fulfilling life. I both admire and respect that - and it was a beautiful ending to an equally beautiful love story. Tragic, perhaps, but they went out together. 👏🏽

I love how the episode begins with Ellie asking if Bill and Frank are nice and Joel says "Well Frank is."
But Joel is the most like Bill. Really emphasizes that Joel knows he isn't a good person.

But Bill was a good person. He was paranoid, sure, and given his letter he probably did take a sadistic joy whenever his traps worked against infected or non-infected. But he was a protector, he was sweet, and he loved with all of his heart. Joel says Bill isn't a good person because he never saw that side of Bill, and only saw the things he saw in himself. What that says is, Joel is indeed like Bill, he just has to learn to find the good in himself like Bill did.

Very good and emotional episode, the change from the game so far are very good and make sense because there cannot be as much action in the show as there was in the game. Somehow I feel like i'm the only one who manage to not tears up until the letter.

5:29 I gotta say as an American...
    September. Not our month
Edit: 32:00 Best comedy movie ever. Stephen Spielberg turned to Jason Rietman the director of the 2021 film, they were all in a meeting for Sony and the group had started talking about some of the best scares in film history then Stephen turned to Jason and said "The library ghost... Top 3 scares of all time". I don't think I'll ever forget that story. It just goes to show that aside from Sfx History between the two directors there was massive respect for each. Also Ivan Rietman made Meatballs, Stripes, and more recently was a producer for Spiderman into the Spider-verse. There's a amazing quote from the brothers who directed it saying how much they loved the flow of dialogue and comedy it felt natural, like in an Ivan film. Along with a great story about Ivan sitting in the pre screenings of the movie

3:35 and that's exactly why you don't use just one stereo earbud. He literally did not hear it, because the audio came only on the right and he was wearing the left one.
Game spoilers for this episode ahead:
Frank in the game gets bit when he got the battery from the military truck that the three were looking for. He was stealing resources and preparing to get away from Bill and Joel and Ellie basically take the truck he prepared for himself. Frank left Bill a nasty farewell letter, basically saying how much he hated him. You could decide to give the letter to Bill or not.
I think they show not just how to make a good video game adaptation, but also how you can deviate from the source material, and actually make it better. Bill had only a small role in the game. The only unfortunate thing we missed out on was the banter between Ellie and Bill and the magazine scene at the end, but I think this episodes writing, story telling, cinematography and acting was an absolute masterpiece.

The first scene and the pyramid of stones.
In the past, stone mounds, such as the one Joel made, were made to commemorate a deceased loved one. They were erected to honor their memory. Of course, such mounds were primarily placed on mountainous, dangerous trails, but in this case, Joel probably did it to commemorate Tess.
The scene with the buried in the basement is also quite interesting. Those who know the game know that the issue of whether after being infected "inside" one is still a human was raised. From the reaction of the buried, who followed the blade of the knife with his eye, one can conclude that he knew what a knife was and how it could end for him.
The scene with Bill and Frank kissing reminds me of the American military: "First the gunfire, then the questions"... in this case, first the kiss, then the question about the name :) Of course, it was a joke, but such stereotypes circulate. :) But I can personally say that I once had a similar adventure with a girl when I was young... I learned her name after :) So the situation is definitely possible :)
And I still wonder, since Joel and Tess met Bill and Frank, why didn't they live with them in this fenced community? There is no logical explanation for this. After all, they could have everything together. Defend each other. Why didn't it happen?
For those who are wondering, Frank probably suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which slowly progresses and is a fatal disease.
Bill and Frank showed us something that doesn't even happen very often in a world that doesn't end. I'm leaving out male-male relationships, but I can understand it in such circumstances. We are a stand-up species that feels best in a herd, regardless of what that herd looks like. It was their herd, their time and their love. I understand it all the more because now, despite the fact that there is no such pandemic, I am as lonely as Bill was before he met Frank. To be happy, the proximity of another person is enough for us.
When I watched this episode for the first time, I was disgusted. But as you can see, you have to mature to certain things/events. Now I think it is one of the best episodes of the entire show....
This episode shows us that even during the end of the world, you can have goals that are worth sticking to in order to survive.
    Great, great show...

the stones are for water level, peoples who live near rivers do this to measure the rising waters, and know if you can camp nearby or not. when the river rises, the water gradually covers the stones and we can see them disappear below the water level, it is a kind of measurer over time to know id the river level is stable and safe or not.

As many times as I've rewatched this episode, it still amazes me to see how small Nick Offerman manages to make himself look when he kisses him. Just a split second, and he's so small and soft and OPEN TO LOVE.
