- Episode 5 of The Last of Us broke me man I can't lie.... I am a first time viewer who has also not played the game. The episode starts with Joel & companions attempting to evade the rebels, Joel and Ellie cross paths with the most wanted man in Kansas City; Kathleen continues her hunt.

The Henry & Sam story was actually more painful in the show than the game, maybe because they made Sam 8 instead of 13. The actor who played Sam is deaf in real life so all the sign language is real, & he did such an amazing job. This show is nearly flawless in its ability to inflict emotional damage on the audience over & over
In an interview with game director Neil Druckmann, when Craig Mazen came to him with that change, he knew it was a better story than what was in the game.
You also have to weigh in the fact Sam told Ellie about the bite, and Ellie honestly thought she was going to save him.

This episode absolutely broke my heart. I knew the plot from the game, but I still wasn’t prepared. The “tubby” Bloater at the end was everything! The way he killed the Beard is how you die to them in the video games.
Henry was absolutely phenomenal. The actor I mean. I cry every single time, he conveys the pain so well.
On the actress being like this in real life, you should watch an interview with her. She seems like the nicest person on earth.
That wasn’t just another day for Joel and Ellie. You can look at their reactions and tell. That one hurt.
Facts! I can tell that it hit them hard. But I do feel like there bounce back and overall timely acceptance of what just happened from that situation was way quicker than the typical persons would have been...if that makes sense.

It effects them in the game as well. You spend more time, have a few “adventures” with Henry and Sam before the conclusion of that story.

Lamar Johnson had a masterful perfomance as Henry. I was so nervous about the show landing this part of the game, Sam and Henry's end is the hardest hitting video game moment for me. They exceeded all of my expectations with this episode, and the addition of Kathleen's story did a solid job humanzing the people on the city, and it laid down every foreshadowing for season 2.
I think you may have misinterpreted who wrote the 'I'm sorry' on the magic slate (I had to do a double take and cross reference handwriting in the scene myself a first watch so you are not alone!). I think I caught you saying it was Sam but it is confirmed that Ellie wrote the message. You can interpret that sorry a couple of ways and each of them valid. There is the version where it means she is sorry her blood didn't save him, or it could be an apology that she did not stay awake with him and fell asleep, or maybe you took away another way.

This episode had me in my feels for weeks. Just thinking the way he didn’t turn around cuz he was deaf and if Ellie never touched him he would’ve stayed there rotting away forever.
It wasn't Sam that left the "I'm Sorry" note, but Ellie that wrote that and left it on his grave bc the guilt she feels both for being able to survive the infection and also that she couldn't save him. We've watched her lose Tess and Sam to being bitten and she knows that she might be the answer to making a cure, but she has to watch these people die. One older, who was protecting her, and one younger who she was trying to protect and couldn't. It's freaking brutal.
Also saw someone on another video call this out and it's been living rent free in my head since then: The comics they were reading, the tagline was "Endure and Survive" but Sam didn't Survive so Henry couldn't Endure.
This was the most painful episode 🥺😢😭

The actress playing Kathleen is one of the nicest and sweetest people in Hollywood. From what I’ve heard. And the kid playing Sam is dead in real life. Love this show!!!

This episode definitely hit hard. If you haven't played the game yet, I highly recommend it. Probably one of the most impactful episodes in the series. playing the game will make you appreciate the tv series so much more...
Also, I think you missed why Kathleen wanted to kill Henry. It was because Sam was sick, and he needed a medicine to save his brothers life. If he hadn't sacrificed (ratted out Kathleen's brother), Sam would have died years ago.
So the question is, how far would a person go to save some one that they love and care about? It's a tough dilemma. No one knows how they would respond until after they are put in that type of situation. If I were Henry, I probably would've done the same thing...
Whhen Kathleen says kids die all the time, she wasnt just being cold. When she was in her old room, they told her they found her because they had talked to ger mother. So, she didnt just lose a brother, her mother was still alive and she watched her lose a son. In a brutal way no less. From how they spoke of KC FEDRA, they probly even displayed hie beaten, dead body publicly as a warning. Also, when Bryan was begging Joel not to kill him, he said his mother was nearby, and that she could help him. The only woman we ever saw, and certainly the only one with the authority to help Joel in any way was Kathleen. So its fair to say Bryan was her kid, and she watched him die as well. Thats why she was so quick to kill the doctor after just letting him live when she relized how important having a doctor us. But she didnt care when it wouldnt matter if he couldn't save her son. And, as it trns out, she was completely right. And sometimes hes the one that is going to kill them. That decision to turn Kathleen's brother in triggered the events that ultimately lead to the deats of everyone in Kansas City.
Come on man. Finish the series. It’s worth it.

This one was really hard to watch. After watching this I think it took me a while to come back to the rest of the season.
PLease PLease do Game of Thrones episode 1. The first 6 seasons of GoT is better than any other tv show you have watched. Sure the last season was rushed and disappointing, but because you know that, it actually wont be so bad. It will end better than you expect.

You really need to turn on your subs..you seem to miss too much..last episode you would have heard that Fedra beat her brother to death in the cell..Henry was the one who turned him in
I know that Henry snitched on Kathleen's brother. I said that in this video actually...Joel even stated that he didn't work with rats during this episode.
