As a 54 yr old gay man, I think the deeper appreciation here, is the absolute love, care , respect & compassion they put into a love story with two men. We do not get afforded the ability to see ourselves as something other that stereotypes, Tropes and the butt of the joke usually. This made me cry on so many levels and I applaud, the actors, writers and HBO, for such an amazing job. Now, I’ll be out back digging my hole to capture my Frank. Lol

I am a 44 yr old father of 2 daughters who never played the games and knew nothing about them until the show. I cried like a baby in front of my teenage daughters who had never seen me cry. I was emotionally exhausted after this episode. I never would have imagined a tv show about zombies and a relationship between 2 men could connect with me on an emotional level about love sacrifice and purpose. my kids kept saying "papi are you ok" ..... This has been the sweetest reaction I’ve seen y’all do. There’s so much hate over this episode because it was gay. As a gay man having a Het couple react to it in a meaningful way is the best thing. There’s so many people calling this “woke” when it’s simply a love story. Love isn’t gay or straight it’s just love.

    • @garrickkthegreat5762

I have seen so many people say "Them wokes love shoving their gay agenda down our throats" which is freakin stupid. And if Bill met a woman and the episode went the exact same way, no one would have a problem with it. and that pisses me off. as a straight man, other straight men confuse me sometimes. Love is love, what's so hard to understand about that?

    • @pathos7527
      @pathos7527 Рік тому +111

Exactly. I’m a straight guy but I didn’t see a “gay love story” here, just a love story. If the exact same events occurred, but Frank was a woman instead, those people wouldn’t say a thing. It’s telling of their own personal biases they ought to work on, NOT the quality of the storytelling or this episode. Glad you enjoyed it like I did. 😊

It was a great episode and a great reaction.
Just one thing about the comment - I don't think Nerdy and Clarus should be considered a Het couple. Nerdy is pretty outspoken about being bi, which I really love. I don't remember/know if Clarus is straight. English isn't my first language, and maybe it's grammatically correct to call any woman-man couple Het even if they are bi or trans or whatever, but it feels wrong to me.
Not that there is anything wrong with being a Het couple, and there are many completely straight couples posting beautiful reactions to this episode. Some of my best friends are straight 😋

Bill taught Frank how to survive, and Frank taught Bill how to live. In the game Frank ends up leaving to see the world because he's too extroverted, gets infected, and hangs himself before turning. So Bill is a lot more bitter about the one person he trusted leaving him.
Either way Bill serves to show Joel the difference between surviving, and living. Bill is a survival expert, but what does he know about living until he opens up? In the game he shows Joel how bad he can become if he doesn't trust people or open up, in the show he shows Joel how good it can become and what he could've had with Tess. So either way Joel starts to open up.
That's the major theme in the Last of Us. Surviving vs Living.

      SPOILERS
      .
      .
      .
      .
      .
      .
      .
vengeance begets vengeance, and that it makes everyone think they're the hero of their own story, but your comment made me rethink that. In a way the second game is also surviving vs living: Abby survived, but lost all her friends due to her crusade for revenge for her dad. Ellie also survived, but lost Dina and her last part of Joel, that was playing the guitar. They could've chosen to just carry on living, but because they chose revenge, they survived, but won't ever live again.

I just saw an article that originally the episode was edited to two hours for a "director's cut" and then they edited it down more so it could be aired but I am hoping with enough fan outpour that the 2 hour one can be released or online post season finale!! I really love the detail that Joel was wearing the plaid shirt Frank had on during the argument with Bill and some of the other production touches. Bill adding more pills to Franks drink (making sure he goes first) or the the charcoal portrait of Bill watching over the flowers in the bedroom. The symbolic wedding killed me!!! The world ended in 2003, gay marriage wasn't legal yet so the entire thing being just for them was the most heartbreaking beautiful moment. Both actors deserve all the awards, just give them out now. As intensely emotional as this episode was, and as much as I cried, this was such a happy, joyful episode. Bill learned to not just survive, but to live, and love, and hope. He was an isolated, closeted gay man who hated the world, when we first see him. When he met Frank, he was so utterly lonely, and when Frank saw through him and essentially let him know he was seen and that he wasn't straight either, Bill was so scared (that first kiss was so innocent, and you can see how tense and scared Bill is there, and how excited he was). And in the final part of the flashback timeline, he's 16 years into a happy, loving life with his husband. He can cry freely in front of him, he can exercise in front of him without fear, he's out there tending to Frank's flowers and winking at his love while he paints. In a world full of suffering and loss, he found the full scope of his humanity and someone who he could experience that with freely.
We never get to see gay couples grow old together in media, it just isn't really a thing that's represented in any meaningful sense of the word. We get that here. And instead of living on to suffer in a world that provides no options for the medical support Frank needs, they go out on their own terms. In a media landscape that's full to the brim with LGBTQ+ characters that get killed off to further other people's stories, these two go out on their own terms in service of the show's core themes. Where the game used Bill as a way to show Joel what isolation would lead him to, they flipped the script here in the tv adaptation while keeping the message effectively the same, showing what love and human connection can foster, which contrasts beautifully with the opening scene where Joel is having a funeral for Tess, who he never let himself connect fully with. And yet, Bill would have trusted Joel to keep Frank...the one person he cared for...safe, if he'd have perished. He knew Joel had that potential to care and connect and keep him safe. That says something.
Like Bill says, it's not a tragic suicide. They've had full lives. He's satisfied. They fall asleep in each other's arms and die there together, and the show doesn't exploit that, with the final shot through the window showing the interior, with the painting of Bill there and Frank's flowers, and cutting short of the bed.
Both of the male leads were fantastic here, but Nick Offerman's physical acting was phenomenal. He needs to win an award for it, or I'll riot in the streets. And the writers were intensely rude for using "On the Nature of Daylight", calling me back to Arrival and a lot of the similar thematic elements.
It's such a beautiful episode, one of the best I've seen on television in the last decade or two, easy.

Something about the message Bill left for Joel had me very emotional knowing the events of the game. Joel is so jaded that he couldn’t even let himself call what he had with Tess a real romantic relationship, even now when she’s gone you can tell he’s torn up inside but he’s so fucked up he can’t even cry for her despite wanting to.
Bill was Joel, closed off with his walls up ready to lead a lonely, cynical existence until he decided to take a chance and let his walls down for Frank, and ended up leading a beautiful, fulfilling life with someone he deeply cared for. Joel once again lost someone he loved and couldn’t even admit to himself the emotions he had regarding Tess, now after Tess and Bills example here Joel is slowly starting to open up and warm up to Ellie. Knowing where their relationship goes made that “I was wrong, I found one person worth saving” hit me like a freight train.

The role of Bill was initially to be played by Con O'Neill ( Viktor Bryukhanov - "Chernobyl / Izzy Hands - "Our Flag Means Death" ) but he had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict so Nick Offerman of "Parks and Recreation" won the role.

The beautiful thing was how they revealed the original song at the end, proving to be more a mix of both their versions. They truly completed each other... 😢

I love how Ellie is amazed by things we take for granted. I'm definitely the synical Joel type. When the episode tone shifted to Bill, it started to feel a little TWD, and I was worried. Once it got into the meat of it, I was all for it. They start the series by showing you the "evil" in the word, then with this episode, they show you the love and goodness that's still left. Gas can last 3 to 6 months, though fuel stabilizers can stretch that up to 2 years. Diesel a bit longer, i think. I wonder why the military wouldn't immediately secure any utilities like gas? They definitely have a plan that would include that. Ron Swanson should know to shoot from cover and not stand in the middle of the road, lol. Can we get a spin-off series about Bill and Frank's adventures? The letter to Joel was amazing. Getting backstory on side characters from the game is a nice way to fill the middle. TLOU is right behind Andor in my book, both know how to make their characters feel real and get you to care.

I think they do a great job in general with showing very realistic reactions by everyone. Ellie being a teen who has never known life outside the QZ, Joel closing himself off, Tess trying to find what little happiness she can. Bill was a closeted gay paranoid loner before the outbreak, so when he meets Frank after 4 years with no human contact of course their initial interaction is weird and awkward but makes perfect sense.
And it's just speculation, but I think Bill standing in the road shooting is to draw fire away from the house, but also points to him not being professionally trained. He is knowledgeable and knows how to handle a weapon, but I don't know if he's ever been in a combat situation before the outbreak.

to answer Nerdy's question about how long gas lasts - it depends a bit on how you store it but a few years and then it's going to get sort of dicey. Starts to accumulate water (which is bad for engines) and some of the vapors escape and change it's ability to run in a normal gasoline engine. Diesel would last longer. The generator and his truck are probably diesel.
